Laying the groundworkeditor’sletter
Correction: The photo on p. 33 of the August 2012 issue was attributed incorrectly to Handcrafted Homes, Inc. The photo was taken by Anastasia Alkema and contributed by Innovative Construction. We regret the error.
Cabinets and countertops—some of the most essential elements of any kitchen—get a special focus this month. As kitchens have become part of our primary living spaces, cabinets and countertops are more important than ever. These building blocks set the tone for the rest of the space, from defi ning the layout to establishing style. Pairing
cabinets and countertops can seem mystifying with all the choices available, but there are some basic design rules that will help in the decision-making process. We also discuss affordable ways to refresh and improve existing cabinets and countertops. Something for everyone!
The character of a home goes far beyond the kitchen. In fact, it begins at the door. Curb appeal projects, like kitchens, are some of the best investments you can make. Just check out the dramatic before-and-after photos in our feature on inviting exteriors to see what a difference paint, landscaping and more can make.
Moving back inside, we are also taking a look at lighting this month. In several of the show homes I toured this year, the light fi xtures really stood out to me. Can and track lights were nowhere to be found. In their place were artistic pendants, table lamps and sconces that complemented the décor. So the theme of our lighting feature focuses on showcasing your personal style with light fi xtures.
Looking for more ideas and local resources for your home? The Fall Atlanta Home Show is this month, and it’s always a hit. See our home show directory for all the details on who will be there and what you can look forward to, including a talk on home and design trends that I’ll be doing on the home show stage at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 23. Hope you can join me!

Show House To Benefi t Marietta/Cobb Museum of ArtLocal interior designers and artists have joined forces to create the Second Annual Art & Design Show House as a fundraiser for the Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art. The show house, which
will be open for tours Sept. 14-29, is located in The Park at Anderson Farms neighborhood in Marietta. Designed by Caldwell-Cline, the traditional-style 5,500 square-foot home includes three levels and 21-rooms and was recommended to the location committee by Johnny Sinclair, an agent with Harry Norman, Realtors. To make the home a true show piece, David Sinclair, of Sinclair Custom Homes, is helping the design team with high-end upgrades. Plus, visitors can shop for a variety of handmade items from local artists on the terrace level of the home. Tickets are $15 plus tax online and $20 plus tax at the door. For more information, see the event listing in our “What’s Happening This Month” section or visit www.artanddesignshowhouse.com.

homefrontFuller Center Saves Vacant Home, Donates To Family in Need
A family of fi ve now has a place to call home thanks to a volunteer effort lead by The Fuller Center for Housing of Greater Atlanta. The project involved repairing and renovating a vacant home in Southwest Atlanta, which was donated to The Fuller Center by Chase Bank. Members of the local building community joined together to help complete the work under the leadership of Mark Galey, president of the center and owner of MRemodeling Services Inc. (www.mremodeling.net), and Chuck Whiteside, project manager and owner of Miracle Construction Services (www.miracleconstruction.com). With additional support from The Home Depot, Atlanta Home Improvement magazine and Reclaim It Atlanta, the renovated home was presented to the new owners during a dedication ceremony in June.
The Fuller Center for Housing is a non-profi t Christian charity that was founded in 2005 by Habitat for Humanity co-founder Millard Fuller and his wife Linda. As part of The Fuller Center’s annual Millard Fuller Legacy Build, Sept. 9-14, the organization will be doing major renovations on fi ve homes in McDonough along with many others worldwide. To volunteer, please go to www.fullercenter.org for details.

Local Builder Raises More Than $15K for Charity EventYou have to be tough if you want to survive in the Atlanta housing industry these days, so it’s no surprise one local builder recently volunteered to fi ght in a charity boxing tournament. “Boxing has become a huge part of my life, and what better way to raise money for a great organization than to do it over cocktails, great food, friends and maybe even a little blood?” says Kevin Aycock, of Aycock Properties (www.aycockproperties.com).
No stranger to the ring, Ayock has been boxing competitively for more than two years and has participated in several amateur boxing tournaments. However, in June, Aycock participated in a different kind of boxing competition: Atlanta Corporate Fight Night, in which members of the business community duke it out for the charity of their choice.
Aycock fought on behalf of HomeAid Atlanta, an organization that works closely with the Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association to build and maintain transitional housing for the temporarily homeless. While he lost his match—against personal trainer Dexter Hampton—Aycock raised more than $15,000 for the event and received special recognition for his enthusiasm and dedication. “It was a great fi ght,” says Aycock.

NARI Atlanta Tour of Remodeled Homes Offers Inspiration and AdviceA wide range of remodeling projects, from kitchens and baths to whole homes, will be on display during the Third Annual NARI Atlanta Tour of Remodeled Homes scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 29. The remodelers themselves, all members of the Atlanta Chapter of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI), a not-for-profi t trade association of remodeling service providers that adheres to a code of ethics, will be on hand to discuss what was done in each home and offer advice on future projects.
“Each year the tour has grown in popularity, as we showcase the beautiful and creative home expansions, renovations, kitchens,
master suites, outdoor living spaces, green improvements and more created by local remodelers, builders and designers,” says Mark Buelow, president of Distinctive Remodeling Solutions (www.distinctiveremodeling.net), which will have a home on the tour, and chairman of the tour committee. “It is also extremely gratifying to partner with a charity and donate a portion of the proceeds to them. This year, our charity partner is the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).”
Tickets are $10 in advance or $15 the day of the tour and will be available for purchase at www.atlantaremodelingtour.com or at the Fall Atlanta Home Show (www.atlantahomeshow.com), Sept. 21-23, 2012, at Cobb Galleria Centre. Attendees may visit the homes in any order and can download a map from the tour website.

Interior lighting is one of the home’s most basic needs,
but today’s popular fi xtures are anything but basic.
Designers commonly refer to lighting as the “jewelry” of a
space—the fi nishing touch that dazzles and delights. Your
home is fi lled with special decorative pieces, and lighting
should be no exception. Now more than ever, homeowners
are turning to light fi xtures to showcase their personal style.
Clueless about how to creatively incorporate lighting into your
home? Local industry experts and designers have come to the
rescue. With these tips, you’ll never be left in the dark.
Start with fi nish The fi nish on a light fi xture is key in a well-crafted piece and a
way to showcase personal style. Some fi nishes can look dated or
stand out for the wrong reasons. One of today’s biggest trends
is fl at, matte fi nishes such as rubbed bronze and toned-down
metallics. Wrought iron is a timeless and versatile fi nish in
keeping with the matte trend. Wood adds a natural fl air and
stands out in untreated or salvaged forms. For an especially
rustic look, wire shades are playful and edgy. Glass and crystal
remain popular materials, says Yaacov Golan, of The Lighting
Loft (www.lightingloft.com).

Details matterForm and function also come into play when selecting statement-
making light fi xtures. Look for stylistic punches and attention to
detail, as if selecting a work of art. Some trends you will fi nd in
today’s marketplace include:
Drum shadesThe ever-popular drum shade is now modern and updated, says
Michael Fortson of Illuminations (www.illumco.com). The drum
silhouette is clean and classic, blending seamlessly with the design
of any room. Make it unique by covering a basic drum shade in
fabric, suggests Golan. If you prefer a neutral-colored shade, let
the shape of the fi xture bring the drama. Look for a pendant with
multiple small drum shades across a beam for visual interest. Judy
White, of Masterpiece Lighting (www.masterpiecelighting.com),
suggests grouping several drum pendants of varying heights and
sizes to modernize a space.
ChandeliersToday’s chandeliers frequently include crystal and glass elements,
which cause light to dance across ceilings and make entire rooms
sparkle. Unexpected uses keep things fresh. For example, don’t
be afraid to use chandeliers outside of their typical locations in
dining rooms and entryways. Why not hang a chandelier in the
master bathroom to add European-boudoir glamour or raise the
sophistication level in the kitchen? If glass and crystal are too
ornate for your tastes, consider farmhouse-style fi xtures that add a
rustic touch for an of-the-moment look.
Popular alternativesBeyond multi-arm chandeliers, orb-shaped fi xtures command
attention. Geometric shapes and textures are sculptural works of
art, says Golan. Lantern-style fi xtures are also common in today’s
homes, bringing a touch of the past into the present. Even light
bulbs have starring roles, including a major resurgence of Edison
styles with exposed fi laments, says White.
Mix, don’t matchNow that you know what’s new in the lighting world, it’s time to
incorporate these fi nds into your space. To avoid an overly match-y,
dated look, seek out fi nishes that complement, not copy, the rest
of the space. While many cabinets, doors and furnishings feature
shiny silver or chrome hardware, it’s not necessary to replicate
that fi nish everywhere. “I never worry about mixing fi nishes!” says
Fortson. “Do not be afraid to mix fl at and shiny: polished chrome
can be softened with fl attened nickel, dark bronze... anything goes.”
Just as works of art are acquired over time, statement fi xtures
should have the same “collected” look, allowing each piece to
speak for itself. Fortson says that many homes today are a mix of
updated rooms and appliances paired with traditional furnishings
and antiques. “My favorite thing to do is to put very contemporary
lighting on top of traditional furniture like a Bombay chest,” he
says. “The more contrast, the bigger the style kick.” Photo courtesy of DRS and Associates

Tie it togetherInterior designer Kerry Howard, of KMH Interiors (www.
kmhinteriors.net), has a meat-and-three design philosophy,
which is to choose key pieces of furniture and to shop for
design elements around those pieces. He says to choose your
main furniture, or the “meat,” then choose other elements
such as rugs, mirrors and wall hangings and, fi nally, lighting.
Consider the characteristics of the space when deciding how
and where to use lighting for maximum impact. “Various
rooms require different types of lighting depending on
task and function,” Golan says. “Ceiling heights require and
demand a scaled size. Bathrooms and kitchens require more
light for obvious task lighting. The various styles will create
different looks and moods in the home.”
Remember while shopping for lighting that you are buying
statement pieces and works of art. “Lighting really is the
‘icing’ on the cake in a well-decorated space,” says Howard.
“It can tie everything together beautifully.”

SilhoueMake a statement with one of the
hottest silhouettes today—the orb. These bold spheres are lighting up the
design world. Take your pick of sizes, styles and fi nishes.
tteEnergy-Saving TipsLighting accounts for
15 percent of the average
consumer’s energy bill, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. By using energy-effi cient lighting, consumers can use up to 75 percent less energy to light their home, adding up to some big savings. Here aremore tips for saving energy:
Conserve energy by using motion
sensors and occupancy sensors. With sensors, you are only using light when you are at home and in need of lighting. The color temperature of the light source also is important. A color temperature between 2700-3000 Kelvin is ideal for residential lighting. Many light bulbs come with color temperature measurements listed on the packaging.—Phil Sherer, Masterpiece Lighting
Add a dimmer to save electricity. If the light is dimmed, it’s like switching to a lower wattage bulb. Dimming a light by half can trim electric use by 40 percent over time. LEDs are four times more effi cient than conventional light sources. They last up to 10 times as long as compact fl uorescents and far longer than typical incandescents.—Bart Lawrence, Sea Gull Lighting
Energy effi ciency is now easy
to achieve without sacrifi cing
ambience or light output. LEDs will begin taking the place of incandescent bulbs and can be retrofi tted onto any existing fi xture. LEDs are more dimmable than compact fl uorescents and not as hot.—Michael Fortson, Illuminations

The Story of SweetWaterSweetWater’s roots began back in Boulder, Colorado, in the early 90s while Freddy Bensch and Kevin McNerney were roommates at the University of Colorado, Boulder. In the summer of 1996, the energy and action of the Olympics brought Freddy to Atlanta. He found this town in need of a West Coast style brewery and knew that he and Kevin were just the guys to turn the local brewing scene on its ear with the hoppy, aggressive ales they had been brewing for years. The boys scraped together just enough money to get started (with the help of generous friends, family and loans). As they were building their very own brewery, Freddy sought a little cool relief by kayaking down Sweetwater Creek, in a state park just west of the brewery. The name of the brewery became obvious, and the motto “Don’t Float the Mainstream” became the guide.February 17, 1997, marked the offi cial beginning of SweetWater Brewery and a new style of brewing and selling beer in Atlanta, as the boys wandered around the city in an old van with Freddy’s dog Badger. “We’ll give you a shot as long as your dog stops begging for leftovers on our patio” was the cautious approval they needed to get the brand rolling.SweetWater’s second and current location is in Midtown Atlanta adjacent to Ansley Park, in the Armour Circle Industrial Park just off of Piedmont and Monroe. The boys saved all of their pennies to buy 26,000 square feet of brewing goodness smack in the middle of all the action. In 2012, the SweetWater gang raised the bar even higher with a $19 million expansion, bringing the facility to 115,000 square feet and quadrupling their capacity to brew up to 500,000 barrels of beer a year.
SweetWater Backyard Beer Garden A backyard to behold! SweetWater Brewing Company teams up with Hope Atlanta to offer home show attendees the chance to sample some of the area’s best local brews. For a $5 donation to Hope Atlanta, home show attendees can sample an array of SweetWater’s fi nest beers and learn about local landscape design and options for every type of backyard. Bruce Holliday, of Landscape Plans Plus, heads up this feature team this year. Learn about landscape design, services and products ranging from grass to fi re, fl owers to water, patios to rec areas. Every penny of the $5 donation goes to Hope Atlanta, the programs of Travelers Aid, dedicated to the prevention of homelessness in our community.
Fire Safety House
Landscape Plans Plus
In the event of a fi re, do you know the best way out of every room in your house? Do your kids? Does the babysitter? According to the U.S. Fire Administration, more than 3,500 Americans die each year in fi res. There are time-tested ways to prevent and survive a fi re. It’s not a question of luck. It’s a matter of planning ahead. Tour this life-saving exhibit with the whole family. Talk with members of the Cobb County Fire Department and the Georgia Firefi ghters Burn Foundation, and begin your planning today! This exhibit has proven so successful that this is the sixth year in a row that it will be featured at the Fall Atlanta Home Show. School fi eld trips, grandparents with their grandchildren, mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters have all toured this interactive exhibit. Your children will learn ways to prevent fi res, the safest ways to escape fi res and learn to trust the rescue efforts of the fi re department in what can be a very loud and scary time. You will learn and/or be reminded of the steps you can take to make your home safe for those that trust you with their lives. The Georgia Firefi ghters Burn Foundation has been making a difference in the lives of Georgians for 30 years – feel free to say thanks!

SeeThru House™ House
The SeeThru House™ is a show-stopping 3,000 square-foot
exhibit! This one-of-a-kind exhibit shows you how a house is built
and what goes on behind the walls of your home. Not only can you
see the framing of the house, but also you get to experience fi rsthand
the internal workings of how your house was built, or should have
been built, and how the plumbing, electrical, security, etc., are
all handled. You will experience an open structure to a fi nished

Surface, color, material, fi nish, layout, design, hardware, size,
style… Let’s face it, choosing cabinets and countertops can
take a design from dream to nightmare if you get lost in the
details. “The right cabinets and countertops can complement
your kitchen by fi nalizing your design and helping you get
the look you were going for,” says Becky Costa, of Stonecrafters USA Inc.
(www.stonecraftersusa.com) in Marietta. You don’t need to break the
budget, but if you’re remodeling to sell (whether right away or in the
foreseeable future), remember the old adage: Kitchens sell houses.
Loving your layout
Every kitchen layout, from classic L-shape to modern double-island,
defi nes and highlights the space. Most are based around the “work
triangle,” in which the sink, stove and fridge are positioned in the form
of a triangle, to eliminate extra footsteps. The U-shape kitchen often
includes a center island for prep work fl anked by cleaning, cooking
and storage areas. A two-wall, or galley, layout is a good option in tight
spaces but creates separation and often makes entertaining diffi cult.
The past several decades have seen a creative movement beyond
classic layouts. A peninsula kitchen adds a dogleg to the standard L-
shape layout and creates a small seating area, while a zone layout
offers separated wash, prep and eating areas. Double islands, in which
one island often includes a sink for prep and serving and the other is
reserved for eating, are increasingly popular and can be added to several
types of layouts.

Karen Salyer says L- and U-shape
kitchens with at least one island
allow for overlapping work zones
and enhanced functionality. “A sink
in between the cold-storage zone
and cooking zones helps maximize
effi ciency so that the cook is better
able to prepare a meal with less
energy output,” she says.
Successful designs include prep
areas such as a small sink for
cleaning fruits and vegetables,
ample storage spaces like pot
drawers near the range and proper
cleanup zones with single-bowl
or offset sinks and rollout trays or
pullout baskets in base cabinets.
Mark Williams, founder of Mark
Williams Design Associates
(www.markwilliams-design.com)
in Atlanta and a trendspotter
for countertop manufacturer
Cosentino, says homeowners
should always consider how they
work in their kitchen. “Where do
you need trash and recycling? Are
you a pantry shopper, or do you go
to the market every day? Once you
start to answer these questions
and overlay the answers onto your
existing space, the kitchen kind of
lays itself out,” he says.
Maximizing
your space
You can make the most of your
space with smart planning. Again,
key questions are “What did my
last kitchen lack?” and “What did it
have that I never used?” Of course,
square footage is almost always an
issue, which makes maximizing
space the secret to a great design.
Fortunately, there are many ways
to eek out extra inches. Unlike in
previous years, homeowners can
take advantage of cabinetry Photo courtesy of CSI Kitchen & Bath Studio

options that fi t in tight corner spaces
to open up the least accessible parts
of a kitchen. “Just going from 30-inch-
high to 36-inch-high wall cabinets
will greatly increase storage capacity,”
says Debra Bobo, of CSI Kitchen &
Bath Studio (www.csikitchenandbath.
com) in Atlanta.
Interior storage accessories often
provide the biggest upgrade
opportunities. Existing cabinets
may be modifi ed to function better
with fewer doors and various insert
options. “The right cabinet can
utilize space better both inside and
out, offering better storage solutions
and a better use of fl oor space,” says
Joshua Johnson, of J. Aaron LLC (www.
jaaronwoodcountertops.com).
Just remember, even a large kitchen
must be planned carefully to
maximize usable space. “It may
not be obvious, but even a large
kitchen can end up short on storage
if not planned correctly,” says Mark
Meriaux, of VT Stone Surfaces (www.
vtindustries.com). “Homeowners
should plan out their storage in
both the upper and lower cabinets
ahead of time and discuss options for
increased storage and functionality.”
Making it
your own
Besides defi ning the architecture of
the kitchen, cabinets and countertops
also establish the style. “Next to
the shape of the kitchen itself, the
choice of cabinets and countertops
is the basis for the whole design,”
says Bobo. “They convey mood
and style. If one is looking for a
contemporary look, then a choice
of frameless cabinets with slab
fronts and concealed hardware

perhaps topped with cast-concrete
countertops would convey that
image. However, a choice of raised-
panel cabinets in a painted and
glazed fi nish, inset construction
and a fi gured granite could be
the foundation for a traditional
approach.”
Design choices also can help solve
challenges such as a lack of space.
“Cabinets for a smaller kitchen
should be functional all the way
around... Your colors should be lighter
and brighter to give the room a sense
of openness and clarity,” Costa says.
Lighting accessories can make a
style statement as well as set moods
and illuminate task areas, while
a new color, new fi xtures or new
decorative hardware can provide fast,
fun and easy changes. Counters can
be salvaged with a color-enhancing
sealer, and cabinet boxes can receive
a fast facelift via lacquer or simply by
replacing doors or drawers.
As always, new design trends are
emerging. Today, the emphasis is
on open-plan kitchens that connect
well to the rest of the home. Eco-
conscious homeowners can take
advantage of products like recyclable
and VOC-free countertops made with
a blend of post-consumer glass.
Whatever is changed or added,
homeowners should invest in quality.
Cabinets and countertops take up
so much space that an oversight
here can dramatically drop resale
value. “Natural stone still outsells
everything else,” Johnson says.
“Designers now have to fi nd new
materials [to] offer a different look.
Glass, wood, concrete and cast-metal
tops are all growing because of this.
If not the entire kitchen, they are
rapidly taking over surfaces like the
island top or raised bar tops.”

Putting it all
together
The best kitchens feature central
components that fl ow together
without distracting the eye. Leading
designers say either element—
cabinets or countertops—may be
selected fi rst, but that only one of
the two should make a dramatic
statement. A louder cabinet color, for
example, should be neutralized by a
more natural countertop.
“The best way to select countertops
is to have the cabinet style and door
available,” says Mell Hill, of Oldcastle
Surfaces (www.oldcastleapg.com) in
Atlanta. “You have to have an overall
vision and color palette that you are
working toward to make sure that
the materials you are looking at lend
themselves to completing that overall
look.”
Classic combinations include soft-
white cabinets with Carrera marble
countertops and dark espresso
cabinets with polished gray granite.
For cabinet fi nishes, the choices are
generally wood-stain (which shows
the wood grain) or paint (which hides
the grain). For countertop fi nishes,
choices include polished (sheen),
honed (matte), fl amed (texturized),
brushed (aged) and leathered (satin).
“I always lean toward having the
countertop contrast with the color
of the cabinet while maintaining the
style,” Johnson says. “So for a cream
cabinet, I would recommend a walnut
or wenge wood. I have seen designers
use dark countertops on dark cabinets
with stunning results, though. Same
thing for light countertops like marble
on white cabinets.”
“Think about how a mix of materials
can add an element of variety and

Surface Trends
Quartz Mania Combining durability and
versatility, quartz countertops
are a modern alternative
to granite and marble. The
scratch- and stain-resistant
surface, made with natural
quartz aggregate and resins,
is available in a rainbow of
colors and easy to maintain,
without sealing. “I would
not stray away from quartz
as a viable option to hold
resale value,” says Mell Hill,
of Oldcastle Surfaces (www.
oldcastleapg.com) in Atlanta.
“If you want to be ahead of
the curve, quartz is the way
to go.”
Next-Generation LaminateFormica countertops can
be a good choice for small
budgets, especially with
the features available
today, including granite-
inspired coloring and veining
and sleek bullnose and
ogee edge options. Both
advancements create the
look of natural stone for less.

First impressions are important, especially when it comes to your home. A house with an unkempt
yard, peeling paint and sagging gutters doesn’t look nearly as appealing as one with a well-maintained
exterior. Whether you plan to sell your home or live in it for years to come, sprucing up the outside will
make coming inside more inviting.
“This is your residence, where you spend most of your life. It’s part of you, so you want it to look as good as you,”
says Avi Moyal, owner of Atlanta Curb Appeal (www.atlantacurbappeal.com).

Where to startTo transform your exterior from drab to fab, begin with an
honest assessment of what your home looks like from the
street. Survey every angle visible to passersby, and take note
of areas that scream for improvements.
When creating a budget, determine your objective: Do
you want to give the façade a mini-facelift or an extreme
makeover? Are you creating curb appeal to attract
homebuyers or to make your home more welcoming to
family and friends? If you’re planning to sell, ask an expert if
the enhancements will add to the value of your property. At
a time when home values are down and there are so many
foreclosures on the market, make sure you can recoup some
of the costs of the improvements in your selling price.
Ideas for improvementYou can make your home more attractive by doing
something as simple as installing outdoor lighting, putting
in a new walkway or garden, incorporating natural stone in
the exterior, building a new front porch or replacing garage
doors.
“People think this kind of project takes thousands of dollars,
and it does not,” says Moyal. “You can pick one thing that’s
inexpensive and make it look really nice, or you can work on
a plan and implement it in three stages.”
A major facelift that involves architectural changes to a
house can cost around $5,000 to $30,000 depending on the
project, according to Heather Shuster, project development
director for Renewal Design-Build (www.renewaldesignbuild.
com), an Atlanta remodeling company.
“One of the most important things with curb appeal is to
have a defi ned entrance,” she says. “You want to give folks
who pull up in a car or walk by a really good sense of where
to enter.”
To give the entrance a strong focal point, Shuster
recommends adding a path, a porch or an awning over the
front door. She also suggests adding molding at the front
door, windows and roofl ine to give the exterior a sense of
balance that is attractive from the street.
Don’t forget to consider art when adding curb appeal, says
Moyal, who also happens to be an artist. Any detail you can
add to your home, whether it is an abstract sculpture on the
lawn, an artsy mailbox or unique street numbers will make a
home stand out among the rest.
In addition to upgrading or improving the exterior of
the home, don’t forget the importance of a beautifully
landscaped lawn and garden. Lawns take a beating during
the hot summer months and often need additional nutrients
in the fall. Proper landscape maintenance can help turn
damaged, patchy grass plush again.

Five more things you can do to increase your home’s curb
appeal:
1. Remove weeds from planter beds and add new mulch
and borders.
2. Repaint the house or key areas of the exterior such as
the front door, siding, shutters and trim.
3. Repair porch railings to eliminate sagging or replace a
wooden porch with brick or stone.
4. Repair cracks in the driveway and widen it with
pavers. Stain the concrete in a shade that accents the
color of the home.
5. Replace a damaged roof with a new one with
architectural shingles. The shingles come in a variety
of textures, patterns and colors. Also consider
replacing old gutters and downspouts and paint them
to match the house.

l• Play up the pathway to your front door—the most important
path for curb appeal—with materials such as brick soldier,

• Lawns are out. Try a cool

and much easier to maintain.
• Garage doors make a big

Important remindersAs with any home improvement
project, be sure to do your due
diligence before hiring a contractor
to do the work. When meeting
with potential contractors, ask for
references from customers whose
projects were similar to yours or ask
friends and neighbors for referrals.
Make sure you have a mutual
understanding about how long
the project will take and what will
happen in the event of delays.
Be sure to check with your local
government about any permits
that will be required before the
work starts. If your project requires
tree removal, city approval might
be needed before they can be
cut down. All these steps—from
concept to completion—add up to
a good fi rst impression that will
attract both houseguests and future
homebuyers.

Notes
Hot daytime temperatures are the norm in Atlanta during September, but by mid-month, cooler evenings roll in. Weed
prevention, reseeding fescue lawns and tending to long-lasting perennials
and summer annuals will keep you busy this month!
Garden Maintenance
➤ Prevent winter lawn weeds by applying a pre-emergent weed
preventer now—safe for all lawn types, but note that if you are
reseeding a fescue lawn now, don’t apply the weed killer.
➤ Fertilize fescue lawns in mid-September. Use a starter fertilizer if you
have just planted seed. Otherwise, use a fertilizer recommended for
established fescue lawns.
➤ Fertilize Bermuda lawns with a winterizer fertilizer in late September.
All other warm-season grasses should not be fertilized until next
May. To prevent winter weeds (such as chickweed and henbit), apply a
pre-emergent weed preventer between September 15 and October 1.
Do not use a pre-emergent if you plan to reseed fescue this month.
➤ Cut back annuals and fall-blooming perennials now for continued

blooms. Deadhead late-summer-blooming
perennials such as Echinacea and Rudbeckia.
➤ Collect fl ower seeds from your garden to save for
spring planting.
➤ You can divide hosta, daylilies and iris this month.
➤ Did you move houseplants outdoors so that they
could enjoy the summer weather? They’re safe
outside until evening temperatures reach the mid-
50s. Before moving inside, inspect them for insects,
and treat with appropriate insecticides—wait two
weeks after spraying to bring indoors.
➤ As temperatures drop, your landscape needs less
water. Adjust your watering schedule based on
rainfall. Make sure that newly seeded lawns receive
enough water so that the soil remains damp.
➤ Hold off on pruning until cooler weather arrives.
You can remove dead limbs from trees and woody
ornamentals.
➤ Be sure to remove fallen leaves from your newly
seeded fescue lawn. Lightly rake them off or use a
leaf blower to gently push them aside.
What To Plant
➤ Fescue seed can be planted from mid-September
through mid-October. Before planting fescue, use a
non-selective herbicide, such as Round-Up or Finale,
to kill weeds in established fescue lawns. You will
be able to plant the seed within seven to 10 days.
➤ Plant, move and revitalize perennial fl owers in late
September through November. Soil sample. Till
beds, adding organic matter, lime and fertilizer.
Plant perennials no deeper than they originally
grew. Mulch with two to three inches of pine straw,
pine bark or other mulch. Water well after planting.
Water perennials with three-quarter inches of
water whenever the soil gets dry.
➤ Plant peonies, poppies and bearded iris now for
springtime fl owers.

While giving a once-over to a prospective new home, the wife associated with the possible
purchase was confused by the plastic drain tubes connected
to the downspouts. It wasn’t that she misunderstood
their purpose or that she didn’t recognize that some of
them needed to be better fi tted to the downspouts. She
was astounded that the lines did not go to some sort of
collection point. “I’m from Sweden,” she said, “and we
always have some sort of storage for rainwater.” Her remark
was especially on target given the current rain defi cit and
the extensive and costly landscaping surrounding the home.
From the old rain barrel to underground storage systems,
supplemental water can be captured at a surprisingly
affordable rate.
Keeping it simple, we’ll start with the plastic rain barrel.
Fifty- or 60-gallon plastic rain barrels are on the market for
$200 or less. They might not add to your curb appeal when
installed at the front of the home, but discreetly located at
the back and screened with lattice or shrubbery, they are
unobtrusive. Be sure to evaluate the roof surface drained
and connect to downspouts providing the greatest volume
of rainwater. With a tap at the base of the barrel, gravity
provides the water pressure. A simple process, but the fl ow
is limited by the depth of water in the barrel. Much larger
above-ground tanks are available; the Clarkston Community
Garden installed one holding over 500 gallons. While the
tank was kept full by the rain collected from the roof of the
snack bar/rest room/ storage building, the massive container
was, at the very least, obvious.
Below-ground storage containers are more complicated but
allow collection from the whole roof system, are practically
invisible and can be fi tted with submersible pump systems
to allow better water distribution. The U. S. Plastic website

At one time or another, we all have turned on a hot water faucet and been caught unaware by
steaming hot water. In fact, you may have been lucky to pull
your hand out of the fl ow just in time to prevent a burn. This
situation creates a real danger for small children who can’t
react in time.
The chart above shows how fast excessively hot water can
cause a burn. Residential water heaters should always be set
to no more than 120 degrees. Measure the water temperature
with a thermometer at a faucet after establishing the fl ow of
hot water. If the temperature is too high, you can make a simple
adjustment at the water heater. A gas water heater has a dial on
the front of the gas valve that can be set to a lower temperature.
If your home has an electric water heater, you’ll probably need
to remove a small access cover and adjust the thermostat
with a screwdriver. When in doubt, look for the instructions
or seek help from an expert. In addition to making your hot
water supply safer, lowering the water heater temperature uses
signifi cantly less energy (saving you money on utility bills).

Going green during a remodel is easier that you think, and it also can be inexpensive. The National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) suggests keeping the three “R”s—reduce, reuse, recycle—in mind. It will help you make greener decisions during a remodeling process.
ReduceReducing consumption can mean buying less of things you don’t need, whether clothes, food, cars or homes altogether. There are also proven ways to reduce your energy consumption that don’t require buying new systems (see the sidebar “Simple Ways To Conserve Energy”).
ReuseReuse can refer to something as simple as keeping your original kitchen cabinets, furniture or fl oors and simply having them resurfaced for a new look. Another way to reuse products is to scout local salvage yards to fi nd items for your home, like antique bathtubs or sinks.RecycleRecycling is sometimes a more convenient way to remodel. If you replace your cabinets, consider using them in another area of the home, such as the garage or basement. If you must buy new, try to use a product made with recycled glass or plastic. Today, many companies creatively combine recycled materials into their products, and they are not necessarily more expensive.
About the author: Morgan Zenner is the marketing and communications coordinator for the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI). Visit www.nari.org for more remodeling tips.

GREEN LIVING
simple ways to conserve energy
➤ Program your thermostat to reduce
heating/cooling when you’re not home.
➤ Cover windows with plastic sheeting
during the colder months.
➤ Unplug unused items like coffee pots,
clocks, computers and TVs.
➤ Add occupancy sensors or timers to
rooms to turn off the lights when no one is
around.
➤ Replace your furnace fi lters at least once
a month.
➤ Use low-fl ow faucets, and insulate
electric water heaters and pipes.
➤ Wash clothes with cold water.
what makes a product green?
There is no standard when it comes to
verifying if a product is green because there
are a variety of factors to consider—energy
savings, water conservation, sustainability,
indoor air quality and environmental
impact—all of which can make something
designated “green.” Here are a few things to
keep in mind when determining the degree
to which a product is—or isn’t—green:
➤ If the product’s green components
are vague, without proof, irrelevant or
false, then the green label is probably a
marketing ploy.
➤ The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) looks
at a product’s environmental impact from
the point it is derived to the manufacturing
process to the distance of distribution to
the installation and the eventual disposal.
This overall analysis of the product can
help when comparing products.
➤ Many green products are scientifi cally
rated by third parties such as Energy Star,
Green Seal, EcoLogo or GREENGUARD.
These independent organizations provide
verifi cation and certifi cation programs for
green products.

With so many options out there, how do you sift through and fi nd the decorating style that is right for you? It is not surprising that many people feel overwhelmed by the endless choices currently available. With these rules you will be well on your way to a stylish home that remains timeless yet always looks fresh.
Celebrate you
Your home should be a refl ection of you, not your designer or your mother or your next-door neighbor. Think about the things that you love and want to surround yourself with. Turn travel souvenirs into an artful collection or have your children’s art professionally framed. Let your personality shine so it is clear to guests who visit your home; celebrate you.
Decorate in layers
The quickest way to date your space is to purchase a matching set of furniture. The trick is to decorate in layers, picking your big pieces—a quality sofa or rug that will stand the test of time—fi rst. Layer in smaller pieces—chairs and occasional tables—followed by lighting, textiles and accessories. Let these layers develop over time. Find pieces you absolutely love and incorporate different colors and textures. If you already own a matching set of furniture, you can break the set up into different rooms or trade with a friend.
Don’t over-decorate
Decorating is about balance. Every corner need not be fi lled or each blank wall covered. A room will be over-decorated if all colors are matched perfectly or if you have tchotchkes covering every surface. Eliminate over-decorating by reserving white space, avoiding clutter and refraining from being too matchy-matchy.
Mix old with new
A sense of history is important in design, as it helps ground your space. It is equally as important to keep the design current. So mix the old with the new, such as us-ing a fun patterned fabric on your grandmother’s chairs or pairing an 18th century table with a modern light fi xture.
New Rules of Decorating Secrets to freestyle design and the new style rules.BY CAPELLA KINCHELOE
DESIGN & DECORGet help from a pro
An interior designer can help focus your interests and inspirations into a design plan that is right for you, your family and your home. With a range of services offered, it’s never been easier to fi nd the right designer for your home. Keep these rules close at hand when speaking to an interior designer about your vision for your space.
Get started
Go through your home and get rid of anything dated. Make a shopping list of things that need replaced—starting with large pieces fi rst. Also think about reusing or repurposing existing pieces that are no longer working as is. Could a lamp be repainted and moved into a bedroom? Would a marble top on your coffee table update it?
Shopping trick
When shopping for your home, ask yourself the following about each item you are considering purchasing: Is it timeless, and if not, is it inexpensive enough to replace in a few years? This should keep your purchases on track with the new rules of decorating.
The bottom line
The new rules of decorating are about mixing layers, styles, textures, colors and eras to create a space that is uniquely you.

The Road Most Traveled New trends in driveways and walkways BY SALLY DEERING
BRICK, STONE & CONCRETE
Driveways and walkways are the home’s welcome wagon, and how they look can say a lot about the homeowner. Trends have turned away from basic concrete or asphalt towards more stylish hardscapes featuring tiles, fl agstones and pavers to inspire an aesthetically pleasing welcome as both guests and homeowners themselves arrive.
Driveways can be simple or decorative; they can make a subtle statement or dramatic splash. Generally, a driveway’s design should complement the home’s architecture and the homeowner’s lifestyle. For instance, families with children may want pavers or asphalt to set up a basketball hoop or an area where small children can use riding toys. Empty nesters may lean toward a high-end cobblestone driveway to improve the home’s appearance and resale value.
The material worldMaterials used for driveways include concrete, brick, cobblestone and fl agstone, although most of us think of concrete slabs or asphalt when we conjure up the image of driveways. Durable and priced low, these driveway materials can be accented by a border of fl agstone, brick or cobblestone, adding beauty and charm without breaking the bank.
Pavers are extremely popular and a big trend in driveways, The key benefi ts of pavers for driveways are aesthetics, strength, fl exibility and durability. Pavers are four times stronger than concrete-slab applications and are 10 times stronger than asphalt. The cracking and wear and tear that you normally see on asphalt and concrete-slab driveways will be a thing of the past when upgrading to pavers. Pavers also resist liquid better than concrete or asphalt, which all but eliminates the presence of ugly oil stains on your driveway.
Curvacious creationsTrending now in concrete is a lot of curves, borders and fun details. Turn a drab square concrete slab into a sleek, curvy patio, complete with a stone-veneer wall. You can also create a brick walkway with sleek curves.
When planning a driveway or walkway renovation, keep in mind that your driveway and walkway are extensions of your home and lifestyle. For the best results, take a walk around your property and share your ideas with a hardscape professional.
retaining walls
Because level lots can be diffi cult to come
by, many landscapes include retaining
walls, which can help create usable space.
They are used as both functional and
aesthetic design elements. Here are a few
things to know about retaining walls:
➤ Retaining walls carve out additional
level space by pushing back a slope
and holding the soil in place. They also
relieve erosion and drainage issues that
might not have been addressed when
the home was built.
➤ Retaining walls are easy to incorporate
seamlessly into your landscape design,
and you can get creative with retaining
walls by building them to be used as
seating, a fi replace or even a water
feature. The most popular trend in
walls is seat-walls on the outside edges
of patios. These walls are 18-22-inches
tall and stand on the edge of the patio
to be used as seating around a fi replace
or fi re pit.
➤ If not properly designed, a retaining
wall could collapse and cause damage
to your yard or home, so make sure you
have a trusted professional to do the
job.
impervious-surface restrictions
A problem that homeowners in some
areas are running into when preparing for
a new driveway is the local restrictions on
impervious surfaces. This is a limitation
on the amount of area that can be covered
by hard surfaces or structures where
rainwater cannot drain into the soil. These
limitations apply to roofs, driveways,
patios and walkways. To circumvent the
limitations, one option is to install a grass
paver product, which allows you to have
a lawn that can stand up to vehicle traffi c
without compacting or rutting.

Show House To Benefit Marietta/Cobb Museum of ArtLocal interior designers and artists have joined forces to create the Second Annual Art & Design Show Houseas a fundraiser for the Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art.

CABINETS & COUNTERTOPSS P E C I A L S E C T I O N
Surface, color, material, finish, layout, design, hardware, size,
style… Let’s face it, choosing cabinets and countertops can
take a design from dream to nightmare if you get lost in the
details. “The right cabinets and countertops can complement
your kitchen by finalizing your design and helping you get
the look you were going for,” says Becky Costa, of Stonecrafters USA Inc.
(www.stonecraftersusa.com) in Marietta. You don’t need to break the
budget, but if you’re remodeling to sell (whether right away or in the
foreseeable future), remember the old adage: Kitchens sell houses.
Loving your layout Every kitchen layout, from classic L-shape to modern double-island,
defines and highlights the space. Most are based around the “work
triangle,” in which the sink, stove and fridge are positioned in the form
of a triangle, to eliminate extra footsteps. The U-shape kitchen often
includes a center island for prep work flanked by cleaning, cooking
and storage areas. A two-wall, or galley, layout is a good option in tight
spaces but creates separation and often makes entertaining difficult.
Photo courtesy of Cosentino

Interior lighting is one of the home’s most basic needs,
but today’s popular fixtures are anything but basic.
Designers commonly refer to lighting as the “jewelry” of a
space—the finishing touch that dazzles and delights. Your
home is filled with special decorative pieces, and lighting
should be no exception. Now more than ever, homeowners
are turning to light fixtures to showcase their personal style.
Clueless about how to creatively incorporate lighting into your
home? Local industry experts and designers have come to the
rescue. With these tips, you’ll never be left in the dark.
Start with finish The finish on a light fixture is key in a well-crafted piece and a
way to showcase personal style. Some finishes can look dated or
stand out for the wrong reasons. One of today’s biggest trends
is flat, matte finishes such as rubbed bronze and toned-down
metallics. Wrought iron is a timeless and versatile finish in
keeping with the matte trend. Wood adds a natural flair and
stands out in untreated or salvaged forms. For an especially
rustic look, wire shades are playful and edgy. Glass and crystal
remain popular materials, says Yaacov Golan, of The Lighting
Loft (www.lightingloft.com).

3/7/12 5:56:11 PMFirst impressions are important, especially when it comes to your home.
