Redemptorist Publications SouthAfrica SUNDAY MASS ENTRANCE ANTIPHON: O people of Zion, behold, the Lord will come to save the nations, and the Lord will make the glory of his voice heard in the joy of your heart. FIRST READING: Baruch 5:1-9. RESPONSORIAL PSALM: Psalm 126. RESPONSE: What great deeds the Lord has worked for us! Indeed, we were glad. 1. When the Lord brought back the exiles of Sion, we thought we were dreaming. then was our mouth filled with laughter, on our tongues, songs of joy. 2. Then the nations themselves said, ‘What great deeds the Lord worked for them!’ What great deeds the Lord worked for us! Indeed, we were glad. 3. Bring back our exiles, O Lord, as streams in the south. Those who are sowing in tears will sing when they reap. 4.They go out, they go out, full of tears, bearing seed for the sowing; they come back, they come back with a song, bearing their sheaves. SECOND READING: Philippians 1:4-6, 8-11. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION: Alleluia, alleluia! Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight; all flesh shall see the salvation of God. Alleluia. GOSPEL: Luke 3:1-6. COMMUNION ANTIPHON: Jerusalem, arise and stand upon the heights, and behold the joy which comes to you from God. A Voice Crying in the Wilderness J OHN THE BAPTIST is a central figure, and an in-between figure. It is as though he stands with one foot firmly on the edge of the Old Testament. He is the last great prophet, pointing people to what God is doing among them. But his other foot is equally firmly on the edge of the New Testament. He ties the two dispensations together, helping each make sense of the other. In fact, John is not really foretelling the future. The future, the kingdom of God, has become the present in the person of John’s cousin, whom he recognises to be God’s son, Jesus, the fulfilment of the promise. In ringing words, Luke carefully situates the beginning of John’s ministry in history. He makes sure no one is in any doubt that what he is about to speak of is true and historical. But at the same time, he is being subversive. He does the same thing at the beginning of his Gospel before he speaks of the annunciation of John the Baptist’s and Jesus’ birth – the list of all the important people by whom their births can be dated. Luke is saying, ‘Here are all these important people, who have power. But their power is as nothing to that of the child, born powerless and in obscurity, who is actually the Son of God. And he will break their power in pieces, not by force but by love.’ John’s powerful message is one of salvation, redemption made real in Jesus Christ. But John is that voice crying in the wilderness to make straight the ways of the Lord, to fill in valleys, to level hills. Just what are these winding ways, these rough roads, these hills and valleys? It is easy to think that this is all about preaching the Gospel, and rush out to proclaim Christ’s coming. But as we will see in next week’s Gospel, John the Baptist (actually God, speaking through his prophet) is really thinking about the winding ways, the rough paths, the hills and valleys in our hearts. Our hearts and minds need some straightening before we can truly hear Christ’s message. Our relationships are often tangled and twisted out of shape. We carry insurmountable mountains of hatred and hurt in our hearts, there are chasms of unforgiveness, rough paths of bitterness, jealousies and nursed grudges. But the good news is that we do not have to make ourselves perfect in order to get God to love us. God knows us and loves us as we are. When we make our souls into self-improvement projects in order to earn God’s love, we actually cement God out of the bunker of self- righteousness we put around our hearts. It is only when we take the ‘self’ out of the equation, when we come to God in our weakness, recognising our need for God, that we let God in. As the poem puts it, ‘Ring the bells that still can ring,/ Forget your perfect offering./ There is a crack in everything,/ That’s how the light gets in.’ Live the Word THE WEEK AHEAD (KEY: SOLEMNITY; FEAST; Memorial; (Optional Memorial ) P=Pope; V=Virgin; M=Martyr; Pr=Priest; D=Doctor Mon 10 Dec Liturgy of the Day Isaiah 35:1-10; Psalm 85; Luke 5:17-26 It is helpful to see sin, like addiction, as a destructive disease instead of something for which we’re culpable or punishable and that ‘makes God unhappy'. A Voice Crying in the Wilderness

JOHN THE BAPTIST is a central f igure, and an in-between figure. It is as though he stands with

one foot firmly on the edge of the Old Testament. He is the last great prophet, pointing people to what God is doing among them.

But his other foot is equally f irmly on the edge of the New Testament. He ties the two dispensations together, helping each make sense of the other. In fact, John is not really foretelling the future. The future, the kingdom of God, has become the present in the person of John’s cousin, whom he recognises to be God’s son, Jesus, the fulf ilment of the promise.

And he will break their power in pieces, not by force but by love.’

John’s powerful message is one of salvation, redemption made real in Jesus Christ. But John

is that voice crying in the wilderness to make straight the ways of the Lord, to f ill in valleys, to level hills.

Our relationships are of ten tangled and twisted out of shape.

When we make our souls into self-improvement projects in order to earn God’s love, we actually cement God out of the bunker of self-righteousness we put around our hearts. It is only when we take the ‘self ’ out of the equation, when we come to God in our weakness, recognising our need for God, that we let God in. As the poem puts it, ‘Ring the bells that still can ring,/ Forget your perfect offering./ There is a crack in everything,/ That’s how the light gets in.’

ADVENT PRAYER 2

Precious Lord, as I embrace this

Advent Season, please open my eyes

to see the great value and blessing of

Your Incarnation.

Help me to discover Your hidden

presence in this world and within my

own soul.

I desire to see, understand and

experience the profound effects that

Your Incarnation has on my life and I

desire to receive those effects more

fully this Advent.

May I become a sanctuary in which

You dwell so that I, like Your dear

Mother, may bring Your presence

into the world.
