Departmental Overview

The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics consists of more than 250 staff members and coaches and sponsors 30 varsity sports programs. These 30 programs include more than 850 student-athletes who participate in the various sports programs annually within the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA). We are currently seeking a Director of Financial Operations who will work within our department’s Business and Finance unit.

Responsibilities ● Approve work from staff to include: transactions including but not limited to BFS requisitions,

procurement card orders, invoices, reimbursements, direct vouchers, journals, and travel vouchers. Question and research specific requests when necessary.

● Assesses, recommends, documents, and implements controls as needed to ensure financial processes maintain compliance with federal and state requirements, internal financial/audit policies, and minimize departmental risk.

● Applies a wide variety of internal and external policies and regulations to address a range of issues such as NCAA compliance, tax implications, recovery of cash, risk management, and the organized implementation of a diverse range of financial services for students and departments. Serves as Department point of contact on miscellaneous issues and problems.

● Reviews and approves financial transactions, including purchase orders, procurement card, vouchers, travel vouchers, journals, travel/entertainment reimbursements, etc.

● Develops, documents, and implements procedures for financial activities to ensure that the unit is running as efficiently and effectively as possible. Performs year-end accrual and deferral journals, tracking year-end expenses and revenues.

● Oversees the budget creation, monitoring and reporting process and the year-end NCAA Audit. ● Other includes professional development.

Required Qualifications ● Thorough knowledge of financial processes, policies and procedures.● Knowledge of financial data management and reporting systems.● Must be proficient in use of Microsoft Office and common desktop/web applications.● Strong interpersonal skills, analytical skills, service orientation, active listening, critical thinking,

attention to detail, ability to multi-task in a high volume environment, organizational skills, effective verbal and written communication skills, sound judgment and decision-making; ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.

● Leadership skills to provide guidance, coaching, and mentoring to professional and support staff. ● Must maintain current knowledge of applicable rules and standards of the Pac-12 Conference,

the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), as well as other associations and agencies to which the University of California, Berkeley campus adheres to, and, at all times avoid any and all violations of these rules and standards.

● Bachelor’s degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training
