Athletes are students first and should be a person that other students respect and look up to. It is important that your behavior be above reproach in all of the following areas.

ON THE FIELD: In the areas of athletic competition, a real athlete does not use profanity or illegal tactics and learns fast that losing is a part of the game and that you should be gracious in defeat and modest in victory. It is always courteous to congratulate the opponent on a well-played game after the contest, whether in defeat or victory.

IN THE CLASSROOM: In the academic area, a good athletic becomes a good student. A person cannot be a classroom laggard and think he/she can be an outstanding athlete. If you are lazy in class, you will be lazy on the practice field or floor and will never reach your full potential. As an athlete, you must plan your schedule so that you give sufficient time and energy to your studies to insure acceptable grades

In addition to maintaining good scholarship, an athlete should give respectful attention to classroom activities and show respect for other students and faculty at all times. Horseplay and unnecessary boisterousness are not approved habits of behavior.

A healthy athlete should have a good attendance record. Never cut class or school.

ON THE CAMPUS: The way we act and look on campus is of great importance. Athletes should accept the responsibilities that come with being a leader.

OFF CAMPUS: Athletes will show respect to coaches at all times and their behavior should be above reproach at all times.

Eligibility of Players

The head coach is responsible for checking the legibility of all players. He shall not play any students who are not eligible.

Should an ineligible player be used, the Athletic Director shall immediately notify the Arkansas Activities Association ofthe violation.

Although each coach shall administer and run his/her own program, the academic eligibility will not vary from one sport to another. All programs in the athletic department will base academic eligibility on the standards set up by the Arkansas Activities Association and the Arkansas Department of Education.

All students are required to have a physical examination before they can practice or participate in any sport. Each coach should keep these physicals on record throughout the school year. Permission slips are required at ALL games.

Participation in Sports

Athletes will be encouraged by all coaches to participate in as many sports as their interests will and abilities allow.

No coach shall ever attempt to influence an athlete to give up participation in one sport in order to devote more time or concentration on another sport.

"Recruiting" from another sport will not be tolerated.

In-season sports have priority over all other sports.

If two sports have a conflicting schedule, the athlete, the head coaches, and the athletic director will agree a sharing of all athletes' time on.

If an athlete quit a sport, direct him/her to the coach of that sport, who will discuss the matter with him/her. The athletic director should be advised if any athlete quits a team or is dismissed from a team.

Students will have a two-week grace period in each sport to try out. This will give him/her a time to see if they want to participate in that sport.

Any athlete, who quits a program that they are presently participating in, must go though a re-entry program before he/she can participate in another sport or that sport a second time. The re-entry program will consist of:

Sr. boys must run 6 laps under 15 minute 4 times before they can be readmitted.

Sr. girls must run 4 laps under 12 minutes 3 times before they can be readmitted.

Jr. boys must run 4 laps under 10 minutes 3 times before they can be readmitted.

Jr. girls must run 3 laps under 10 minutes 3 times before they can be readmitted.

If an athlete quits for medical reasons or on advisement from a coach, the re-entry program can be waived.

When an athlete quits a sport and wishes to re-enter that sport, it will always be at the decoration ofthat coach, whether or not he/she will be allowed to re-enter the program.

(7). All decisions to suspend or expel an athlete must be delayed until the head coach the way of reason.

GUIDELINES FOR LETTERING:

A. Football -- Completes the season and participates in a minimum of (1/2)

of the quarters in a season of varsity games

E. Track -- Completes the season and scores 30 points in varsity meets or 20

points and qualifies for the state meet. All District is 1st or 4th finish in the District track meet. All State is 1st - 2nd in State track meet.

F. Cross Country -- Completes the season and finishes in the top 10 at the state meet.

Softball-- Completes the season and participates in a minimum of (1/2) of

innings during varsity season.

Tennis & Golf -- Completes the season and qualify for the state meet.

Soccer -- Completes the season and plays in (1/2) the games

Gymnastics -- Completes the season and:

1. Must complete in all gymnastics meets.

2. Complete a no fall beam routine that scores above a 7.8.

3. Have an average all-around score of35.00

4. Complete and place in the state competition by AAA.

A 9th grader cannot letter in any sport because they cannot participate in all high school sports.

Note: The coach of any sport, at hislher discretion, may recommend for a letter an athlete

who has not met minimum requirements. Injuries, unusual circumstances, or illness might prevent an athlete from meeting the standards. Seniors who have been with the team for three years should also be considered for lettering. This should be restricted to a student's senior year if possible. In order for a student to letter, the coach has to have the AD approval.

Managers: Only two managers are eligible for varsity awards. The manager must manage for two years in order to be awarded a jacket at the discretion of the coach and the athletic director.

Awards

A. A jacket is awarded to the athlete the first time he/she meets the guidelines for lettering in a sport except in golf, tennis, soccer, baseball, softball, and gymnastics. A 9th grader may not receive a jacket because they are not allowed to participate in other high school sports.

A certificate is awarded to the athlete for the second time he/she meets the

guidelines for lettering in a sport.

C. A blanket is awarded to an athlete that letters 3 years in the same sport. If an athlete letters in more that one sport, the blanket letter will include all of the different sport symbols in which the athlete lettered 3 years.

CODE OF CONDUCT FOR COACHES

Discipline

Coaches should be fair and consistent.

Our general philosophy will be that we will attempt to help someone who

makes a mistake. However, if this is repeated, the welfare of the team must take priority. This violation might mean breaking training rules, missing practice, poor attitude, etc.

(3). Coaches have the right to discipline athletes on their individual teams, but should exercise should sound judgment in administering specific penalties, keeping in mind the welfare of the team as well as the individual.

No coach should dismiss an athlete from a team before discussing it with the head coach and the athletic director, allowing a 24 hour evaluation period except in extenuating circumstances. Sometimes things look differently from another point of view or a cooling off period. Remember the easiest thing to do is remove a problem; it takes wisdom and courage to try to save a student and keep him in your program.

Coaches should regularly encourage students to attend practice and classes. Any athlete who does not practice should not play. Medical reasons, however, should be considered when holding athletes out of contest for missing practice.

Coaches need to stay with their athletes after practice and games until their parents pick them up.

Coaching Clinic

(1). Coaches will be encouraged to attend clinics, however, the budget limitations will make it necessary to have them approved by the athletic director in advance.

The school will pay for membership into the Arkansas High School Coaches Association for all members.

All junior high coaches will be subject to scouting unless assigned otherwise by the athletic director.

The high school coach of each sport will make scouting assignments.

Football scouting will be done in teams. The head football coach will assign the scout schedule and teams.

All coaches should notify scouts of their assignments as far in advance as possible.

The school van will be used for scouting when possible. Ifpersonal cars are used the coach will be reimbursed.

Scouting below the varsity level is discouraged.

Dress

We set the tone for our practice by the way we look. If we "dress out" in our coaching clothes then we give a signal to our athletes that it's time to work. We also represent by our dress, how prepared we are (we don't look prepared to coach lay-ups in street shoes).

Suggested dress is: 1) Red, black, khaki or gray coaching shorts or slacks; 2) Red, black, white or gray T-shirt or coaching shirt (plain or approved logo) with shirt tail tucked in; 3) Red, black, white, or gray jacket (plain or approved logo); 4) Tennis shoes, coaching or cleated shoes: 5) White socks.

Faculty Relation

All coaches should strive to maintain a good relationship with the faculty, administration, and other coaches. You cannot expect to gain the respect and cooperation you need from others unless you show an interest in and concern about their areas. Do not wait until an athlete is in trouble to communicate with the faculty and staff about their problems. Coaches must be good teachers and carry out all their responsibilities as member of the staff.

Morals

Coaches should refrain from the use of profanity.

Coaches must have unity and loyalty to fellow coaches.

Coaches should try to take care of family and financial responsibilities in a timely manner.

Coaches must not allow anything in their personal life to become a problem at school.

Practice Policy

All practices will follow AAA rules.

Coaches must not knowingly break any rules or regulations.

No practice will be scheduled on Wednesday nights, Sunday, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, New Years Day, or Easter without prior approval of the athletic director.

Students would know the approximate length of practice so they can make arrangements for transportation, meals, etc.

Water breaks should be given during hot weather.

All practices should be organized to involve a minimum of idle time for the athletes.

All practices should involve a proper warm-up.

Media

It is each coach's responsibility and duty to see that their team gets the publicity they deserve. We all enjoy seeing our accomplishments in the news and the players are no different. After garnes, call in scores and details to the newspaper and see that they aTereported in time to make the next day's paper if possible. Be cooperative with the radio and television people and make any coverage your team might deserve possible. Call in scores for home games and road garnes, and call in losses as well as wins.

Practice Policy

1. Regardless of state or school rulings, be positive about our practice time. It' s really not the time that you have that matters, but what you do with the time you have.

Coaches are expected to be dressed and in the locker room as quickly as possible after class.

Do not "gab" on the field or court - get your players ready to go.

Work with every young man (woman) that comes on the field or court. Do not allow them to go UN-noticed.

Be properly dressed.

Do not curse at or around players.

If you have "jumped on" a young man pretty good, be sure to talk with him after practice.

Spend some time with our athletes. After practice, roam around the locker room talking and joking with players. This time may be as important as any we spend.

Do not allow things to lay around in our dressing room. Maintain pride in all that we do.

Do not accept anything less than they're best. Do not overlook a thing. Don't let things slide.

HUSTLE!

Know your practice plan before you go on the field.

You can't excite the players if you are not excited yourself. Enthusiasm breeds enthusiasm.

Strive to improve your phase ofthe coaching constantly.

Don't argue or "discuss problems" on the field or in front of our athletes.

Don't lose your poise or confidence out on the field or any other place.

Demand hustle and quickness in all that we do.

Give the players "little secrets" to help them.

Emphasize that athletes are special- so they must pay a special price.

Pay strict attention to the schedule. Do not abuse the time allotted for each segment.

Don't relax during any phase of practice. You are hired to coach and allong as there is an athlete present - get after it - do your job.

Breed confidence into our squad.

Players must respect you. This can only be done if they have a feeling for you.

If you have a player that doesn't want to do it the way he should, send him in. Don't ruin everybody else's workout.

ATHLETIC BUSINESS

A. Budget Preparation

Each sport will operate within a budget that is prepared by the athletic director and the administration.

The head coach of each sport at each level will submit an inventory and needs list to the athletic director within two weeks after the close of the

season. A current account of each sport will be kept in the athletic office.

Budget revenues will come from gate receipts and tickets sales from athletic events and transfer of funds from the general operating fund.

B. Equipment

Each head coach will supply and submit a needs and inventory list for his sport.

No equipment will be purchased without a requisition approved by the athletic director.

All equipment ordered would be checked by the head coach.

Coaches will teach players to respect equipment.

It is the head coaches responsibility to see that all equipment is kept clean, in good repair, and paid for by the athlete iflost.

Equipment should be taken up if a student is wearing it outside of school participation.

Dressing rooms, lockers, and equipment rooms should be clean and orderly at all times with equipment properly stored.

The athletic director will order all equipment or direct the coach for order specific items. We can make it last longer by working to preserve its condition.

All travel requests should be made at least a week in advance of any trip.

Coaches should teach students to respect school property and take care of busses.

The coaches should check the bus before leaving and report any damage.

After trips, the coach should check the bus and return it in a clean condition.

The athletes should be property supervised on all trips.

All out oftown trips must have the approval of the athletic director.

Strive to return home as soon as possible, especially on school nights.

Overnight trips will be permitted only by special permission from the athletic director and will be discouraged unless absolutely necessary.

Coaches will pay all bills on trips and secure receipts for all money spent and submit them to the athletic director the following day.

The school van will be used for the athletic trips whenever possible. The school will pay for gas if a personal car is used.

Any person not associated with the team cannot travel, eat, or room with the team.

All athletes travel and return with the team unless the following conditions exist:

Spending the night

Emergency situation

Travel request for the whole season should be made in advance if possible.

If a game is cancelled, notify the transportation department immediately.

Seating charts on trips are highly recommended.

All bus rules should be followed.

Coaches are required to be prepared to drive a bus.

Athletes should be kept on their best behavior in restaurants and other public places.

Insurance

Camden-Fairview School provides blanket coverage for all athletes in school. This insurance coverage is a secondary coverage and will pay for only what the athlete's other insurance does not pay for. If the athlete has no other insurance, then he/she shall be covered under the school insurance plan.

In an athlete wishes to file on the school insurance, he/she must fill our insurance claim along with school personnel.

Scheduling

The athletic director is responsible for all scheduling of athletic events. Each head coach will present a tentative schedule to the athletic director for his/her sport. If the contest is approved, then a contract will be signed between the two schools.

Meals

All players and coaches will eat the same menus while on a trip except in cases of religious beliefs or medical reasons.

Coaches should make prior arrangements for meals and try to get the best pnces.

Coaches are responsible for requesting meal money.

Meal money request must be made to the athletics office and should be made five business days before trip.

A list of students that went on the trip shall be turned in at the athletics office the day following the trip.

F. Game Contracts

(1). All coaches should use the AAA contract form.

(2). All contracts should be signed by the athletic director and returned to the athletic office.

Officials

Head coaches will contact and make verbal agreements with the officials they want to hire. The head coach shall give this information to the athletic director. The athletic director/administration will then issue and sign a contract for the officials.

Fee to be paid officials will be set by the administration and shall not exceed the recommended scale set by the Arkansas Activities Association.

G. Raising Money

No coach shall raise money through service clubs or individuals without the approval of the athletic director.

The use of students by coaches or a local organization for fund raising purchases should always be cleared by the principal of the school.

Maintenance

The head coaches and assistant will be responsible for the cleanliness of the gym, dressing rooms, and care of the fields.

The athletic director will be contacted for unusual maintenance requests, which may require appropriation of money.

I. Inventory

A detailed inventory for each sport should be submitted to the athletic director with a request for the equipment needed in that sport for the following year. This should be done two weeks after sport is finished.

J. Use of School Facilities

The use of any school facility by anyone of the school must be cleared through the Athletic Director, Superintendent, and the School Board. The fee is set by the school board.

K. CDL License

All coaches must hold a CDL license and will be required to drive school busses on athletic trips. If for any reason coaches' license is suspended or revoked, their coaching and teaching positions will be subject to review and may be terminated

STAFF RESPONSmILITIES

M. Athletic Director

The Director of Athletics shall have the responsibility of general supervision and coordination of the competitive sports program of the Junior High and Senior High Schools in the school district. The coaches should look at him for direction, guidance, and support the policies of the school district and promote the fullest development ofthe abilities, talents, character, and personality of each individual. In this capacity, the director of athletics shall be charged with the following specific responsibilities:

He organizes and administers, in cooperation with the school principals, the overall program of athletics

He recommends. with the advice and council of the school principals and the personnel director, the professional personnel required implementing the program.

He prepares an annual budget covering the needed expenditures. also estimate anticipated receipts.

He shall follow all district procedures in requisitioning, reporting and purchasing equipment and supplies in accordance with budget allocations.

He shall submit prior to July 1st of each year, a list to the director of maintenance with repair and maintenance needs for the summer months.

He is a responsible, with the principals and assistant principal for administering inter-school athletic events and contest.

He executes Board of Education and Administrative policies in the area of assignment.

He develops and places into operation rules and regulations consistent with the general policies of the district.

He assists in the evaluation of policies within the area of assignment and makes recommendations for changes in policies.

He works with principals and other staff members in developing interest and appreciation in students, employees, and the public.

He shall approve the schedules for all sports.

Game contracts are to be signed and executed by the athletic director and copies are to be kept in his office.

He is responsible for the National Federation and AAA rules and regulations.

He selects, recommends, issues, and inventories all athletic equipment.

He evaluates and counsels annually with all coaches on the competency of their coaching and leadership performance.

He advises and recommends replacement of coaching personnel.

He advises and recommends the assignment of coaching personnel commensurate with the teaching requirements of the school.

They are responsible for supervising and coordinating the work ofthe assistant coaches.

They assist the athletic director in developing and directing a comprehensive program of athletics in the high school and junior highs.

They are directly responsible for the in-service training of the coaches assisting in their sport.

They secure approval ofthe athletic director and principal when he or any of his assistants are to be out of school to attend clinics or conferences.

They assist the athletic director in developing a public relations program designed to keep patrons informs of the accomplishments of the athletic program.

He secures competent game officials for his contests

They assume responsibility for the general management ofthe athletic fields and facilities under his supervision. This includes use, care, and maintenance.

When classes are to be missed, they are to make a list of the traveling squad and turn it in to the principal.

They are to follow up with athletes and work closely with teachers concerning make-up work because of missed classes.

They are responsible for making a eligibility list for their sport and turning it in at least two weeks prior to the first contest.

They submit to the counselor a list of names of athletes to be scheduled to the athletic period.

They will make every effort to support high school and junior high contests by their attendance.

They are responsible for administering policies on athletic awards. They will submit a list of names to the athletic director that are to be lettered.

They will make an itinerary for every out oftown trip.

They are responsible for calling the transportation department at least three days prior to each out-of-town trip to confirm transportation and give leaving times.

They attend all league meetings when their sport is an item of discussion.

They confer with the athletic director if a player is to be dismissed from the team or severely disciplined.

Each head coach will be responsible for the publicity of their team reminding the press, radio, and television about each contest and report the results to each of them where interest is shown.

They are responsible for the care of injured players. Always refer them to a team physician or the hospital in case of emergency. Parents should always be contacted is possible whenever injuries occur. If the athlete is hospitalized, the coach should make every effort to call or visit.

C. Junior High Head Coaches

The junior high head coaches should follow all guidelines that were listed for the high school head coaches. They are also responsible for developing an athletic on their campus under the leadership of the principal, the athletic director and the high school head coach of that sport. Other specific duties and responsibilities include the following:

They teach the type of defense and drills that are suggested by the head coach.

They implement, under the direction of the athletic direction of the athletic director and the head coach, an off season program. They compile a list of needs and inventory of equipment.

D. Assistant Coaches

(1). They shall perform the duties that are assigned by the athletic director and head coach of the sport they coach.

They shall be loyal to the head coaches and to the school and the athletic program.

They shall at all times keep the overall philosophy of the school district and the athletic program and strive at all times to meet those goals and follow the policies of the athletic department.

They shall at all times, keep the health and welfare ofthe student athletes in mind. They shall exercise concern in the care and condition of the athletic equipment.

They shall make every effort to increase their knowledge ofthe sports they coach by attending clinics, meetings, and studying the sports they coach.

They shall strive to be the best classroom teachers they can be and have a good relationship with students, faculty, and staff.

Employing Coaches

The Athletic Director works with the administration in employing coaches. The administration dictates what teaching fields they are looking for and the athletic director begins to seek applicants with those teaching fields. The athletic director then schedules interviews with the applicants. The applicant may interview with the superintendent and principal on the first visit or may be called back for a second visit. The athletic director calls the references of the applicants, in addition to the personal interview and evaluation of the applicant's resume, application, and transcripts.
