Syntagma- Parliament Square

This is surrounded by luxurious hotels , banks, outdoor cafes, kiosks and luxury boutiques. You will watch the change of the guard ( the evzones ) in front of the monumen t of the Unknown Soldier . The picturesque costume worn by the evzones was originally worn by the veterans of the war of Independence .

The flea market near Monastiraki (Tube Station) full of antiques for sale, restaurants with live music and full of life especially in the week ends.

Kolonaki

A residential district at the foot of the hill of Lykavitos (cafes, restaurants, boutiques).

Omonia

The equivalent to Piccadilly Circus is noisy, congested and popular . The three avenues: Stadiou, Panepistimiou and Akadimias, between Syntagma and Omonia, form the center of Athens , where some handsome neoclassic buildings dating from the XIX century can be seen.

Plaka

At the foot of the Acropolis, in the old Athenian neighborhood which retains its old buildings and streets. You will find small Byzantine churches, restaurants, cabarets, bars and tourist shops.

Page 4: Athens,Greece

Piraeus

This is the primary Greek port since the Themistocles era . A typically Mediterranean port, commercially and industrially very active, Piraeus , in contrast to the small marinas of Passalimani and Microlimano with their fish restaurants and their cafes, tempts you to set off for the Greek islands.

Cape Sunion

Poseidon's temple (The God of sea) in Cape Sounion , built between 444 and 440 BC. It is recommended, in order to appreciate it, to take a whole day excursion in order to see the ruins and enjoy the fabulous sunset

 Pilio

Page 5: Athens,Greece

Pelion is a land of legend and myths which has captivated ancient and modern writers. It will be difficult to choose the most handsome amongst its 24 villages, the most charming landscape, and the most inviting beach. A visit to the mountains of Thessaly is a must.

Meteora

In the northwest corner of Thessaly is a group of huge rocks. On top of these rocks monasteries known as Meteora are built. This site is very popular with tourists.

The extraordinary site of Meteora is one of the most impressive in Greece seen from whatever direction. A Panoramic road takes you around the site offering the best angle on the Meteora, the monasteries at the top overlooking the plains down below.

Monastiraki

From the electric train station of this name, heading west in the area that skirts the park around the Thission and Ancient Agora, at the end of the shopping street Ermou. There is the flea market where items ranging from off-brand winter jackets, to army knives, vie with old telephone cards Many gift shops and most notably antique, junk and collectors corners of every sort. This is touristy, but it's mixed in with the sort of old shops, that are gems and one of a kind. By the way, walk just down from the station away from the flea market to Kirikou street and you'll find the busiest and most popular after-work Gyros places - if a Gyros is good anywhere, it is here!

National Gardens

Behind and to the south of the Parliament building {see map location No11}, bordered by Amalias Street, are these extensive gardens - housing the Zappeion Exhibition hall {see map location No9} and providing semi shaded walking, away from traffic, amongst trees and shrubs. Walk through the gardens to get to the Marble Stadium

Plaka (Greek: Πλάκα), lying just beneath the Acropolis, is famous for its plentiful neoclassical architecture, making up one of the most scenic districts of the city. It remains a traditionally prime tourist destination with a number of picturesque tavernas, live performances and street salesmen. Nearby Monastiraki (Greek: Μοναστηράκι), for its part, is well-known for its string of small shops and markets, as well as its crowded flea market and tavernas specialising in souvlaki. Another district notably famous for its student-crammed, stylish cafés is Theseum or Thission (Greek: Θησείο), lying just west of Monastiraki. Thission is home to the ancient Temple of Hephaestus, standing atop a small hill. This area also has a picturesque 11th Century Byzantine church, as well as a 15th Century Ottoman mosque.

Parnitha National Park is punctuated by well-marked paths, gorges, springs, torrents and caves dotting the protected area. Hiking and mountain-biking in all four mountains remain popular outdoor activities for many residents of the city. The National Garden of Athens was completed in 1840 and is a green refuge of 15.5 hectares in the center of the Greek capital. It is to be found between the Parliament and Zappeion buildings, the latter of which maintains its own garden of seven hectares.

Weather in Athens

Athens has a Subtropical Mediterranean climate while the southern Athens area experiences a hot Semi-arid climate with extremely long periods of sunshine throughout the and with the greatest amounts of precipitation mainly occurring from mid-October to mid-April; any precipitation is sparse during summer and it generally takes the form of showers and/or thunderstorms. Due to its location in a rain shadow because of Mount Parnitha the Athenian climate is much drier compared to most of the rest of Mediterranean Europe. The mountainous northern suburbs, for their part, experience a somewhat differentiated climatic pattern, with generally lower temperatures. Fog is highly unusual in the city centre but it is more frequent to the east, behind the Hymettus mountain range. Winter is mild, with a January average of 8.9 °C (48.0 °F); in Nea Filadeflia and 10.3 °C (50.5 °F) in Hellenikon; Snowfalls are not common and these do not normally lead to significant, if any, disruption. Nonetheless, the city has experienced heavy snowfalls in the past decade. During the blizzards of March 1987; February 1992; 4–6

Page 10: Athens,Greece

January 2002; 12–13 February 2004; January 2006; and 16–18 February 2008, snow blanketed large parts of the metropolitan area, causing havoc across much of the city.

Spring and fall (autumn) are considered ideal seasons for sightseeing and all kinds of outdoor activities.Summers can be particularly hot and at times prone to smog and pollution related conditions (however, much less so than in the past). According to the National Observatory of Athens the average daytime maximum temperature in Thision (period 2001-2009) for the month of July is 35.1 °C (95.2 °F) .Athens is notorious for its heatwaves occurring generally during the months of July and/or August, when hot air masses sweep across Greece from the south or the southwest. On such days temperatures soar over 38 °C (100 °F).
