What’s the best online learning experience you’ve had, and why?
• SJll awaiJng a great one. :) • One that makes me engage with it • Training in SecondLife...very interacJve and
entertaining • Elearning Guild has great interacJve sessions • I have only aTended a few, but none of them
really standout as really good. • ArJculate Storyline training. It was a 3 hour
course that flew by! We had docs provided ahead of Jme, and we're asked to log into Storyline while taking the course. The instructor built a storyline course and we did at the same Jme. Then we could ask about specific things that we came across in a live environment w support.
• The facilitator took the Jme to know me...I felt they were there,
• InteracJons...breakouts...engaging! • ATD designing training cerJficate. Seven 2.5 hr
sessions flew by with engaging material and acJvity. The best!
• I met my husband on TwiTer. :-‐) • Fierce webinar where we used break out
sessions to pracJce 1:1 conflict conversaJons .
• Engaging. Never a moment to be tempted to mulJtask
• The best elearning sessions engage you from start to finish!
• mobile learning • Had virtual breakout rooms for parJcipants to
discuss and then rejoin main group, • Any where you can see others • CapJvate course in Lynda com • I've done mechanical troubleshooJng tutorials
online that were detailed, immediately relevant and portable. I could physically bring the training with me to the job.
• Personal coaching session

Some Implications We can do better than 5-20% retention rates • Webinars/elearning can help teach ‘What to do’ (Models, Tools) • Don’t help people practice ‘How to be’ (Mindsets, Reflexes)
Most team exercises can be adapted for remote / virtual Trend: Online for content, In-person for experience

What tips can you share for experiential learning (learning-by-doing) at a distance? • Get a facilitator at all the locaJons to moderate,
Story telling works here as well. Pictures and videos add more value and engage the audience
• We have tried Lync and that has worked well for us....across mulJple locaJons,
• Engaging the audience is Key!!!! • Share your keyboard and mouse so that learners
can parJcipate • Share a story-‐real or representaJve that they
can chew on • Give un assignment between 2 session • assign an acJvity (for example graph a house)
and have students email a picture of the final product and share these on screen.
• Have people submit pictures from their sites and show them through the training.
• partner for 1:1 conversaJons • Provide workbooks and provide quiet Jme to
complete the workbook • assign discussion topics or chunks of content to
the learner to present prior to the webinar • Use web cam
• We use interacJve projects aber class to engage learners,
• involving remote coaching by instructors. • Use webcam so people can see each other • breakout room where the group has to create
something together and report back • Using Adobe connect the white board in team
environment was a great experience. • Have them find an object wherever they are
that represents the learning, then bring it back and share with the team.
• Engaging the audience by giving members a part of the training to teach.
• Live chat windows

Discussion: Creating Virtual Connections
What tips can you share for strengthening connections and building trust with others in virtual settings?
On the web: pollev.com/experiencepoint/ Text EXPERIENCEPOINT to 37607 once to join, then text your thoughts
SHARE WITH US!
What tips can you share for strengthening connections and building trust with others in virtual settings? • Don't ask others to share video if you dont share
yours • Put a map up and have folks pin where they are
on the map with a distributed group • Ask folks to meet up aber the webinar -‐-‐
company will pay for lunch for anyone that meets up aber the webinar
• Short introducJon videos of aTendees • Have them paired with a learning partner • Build teams and have them select a team name. • Stand up when you're talking, • Set up a Get-‐to-‐know-‐you session prior to actual
work sessions • Bio video as pre-‐work • I think it's the same as ILT...give the breakout
group a challenge to do...make a liTle friendly compeJJon between groups as well.,
• you should interact as you want them to interact...model the way
• Create short introductory videos of self and share with the audience at least a week before the session.,
• CreaJng a virtual team/group.....maybe a facebook or LinkedIn page so that they can stay engaged and share best pracJces post the virtual program
• GoTa check in and call on them oben -‐ every 5 min or so.
• Photo assignment: view from your window • Share resources, parJcularly across business
unit who don't normally share resources., • Work on volunteer projects together that
benefit both parJes • Share personal stuff about me as a person • Share a challenge I struggle with • PlanJng quesJons in the audience to iniJate
engagement and group interacJon • Use breakout rooms, webcams. Create a PPT
bio that is shared during webinar. • Treat it like a real interacJon, be nice, say hi
and don't get up and walk away because we can sJll see you not paying aTenJon!
• Draw iniJals on screen with map of where they live and put in chat what they love about where they live
• Create an exercise: ask people to write a self descripJon (without name), then ask the others to find out who are each one (in a communicaJon skills training it helps also to show what is an objecJve, clear and precise text)
What tips can you share for strengthening connections and building trust with others in virtual settings? • Assign pre-‐reads that teams can do together
prior to coming in, do breakouts during and give group assignment post training that keep 2-‐3 people together., Send teasers and assign points as a team
• ExperiencePoint • Breakout sessions in webinar and ask them to
discuss a topic and collecJvely come up with one answer. Talk it out unJl there is consensus.
• Share something about yourself that no one knows about you! :^)
• Have people introduce themselves online (social plajorm first prior to coming). Have poll quesJon during session on a "vulnerable" topic. Polling anonymous yet ppl can see "there are ppl who have had the same challenges as me" and it sets the stage for feeling more comfortable to share during the session. Have vulnerable facilitators.
• Sharing live video of the main presenter(s) has been very helpful for us -‐ this gives parJcipants something other than a PPT to look at. We also use the aTendee list to select "volunteers" to comment on the content. So parJcipants know that at any Jme they can be called on.
• Assign small groups or pairs to "meet" between sessions
• Use video to include remote associates. I am the only person on my team working remote and including me via video increases my connecJon to the team!

An Insight
• Technology is our classroom, but it need not constrain our curriculum nor our user-centered approach to design.
• Encourage a laboratory mindset. Involve learners in the experimentation process. “We’ve never done this before”. Messy and improvisation are OK.
#ATD2015 @experiencepoint @jenntec
Some Implications Develop proficiency with webinars first Control as much technology as possible Don’t fly solo

What ideas are you most excited to try? What are some safe and easy ways for you to experiment with these ideas in the next 3 wks? • My coaching program will be launched by 1st of
July with overseas client for the first Jme in my life
• Look into developing a collaboraJve site for discussions
• ExperiencePoint • Leadership meeJng AcJviJes that drives
discussion with the outcomes on idenJfying gaps in communicaJon and trust for one another.
• Explore tools such as Google hangouts. • Change my mind set from "old school" to more
modern thinking. This old dog will learn some new tricks.
• trying Adobe Connect for break out meeJngs • Hold a team meeJng as a test. Experiment with
those who will be the locaJon helpers. • Invite my table mates from this session to
exchange best pracJces. • Conduct team meeJngs to develop proficiency
within the plajorm or app, • Hold a social party to develop proficiency. • Video intros. At least a week in advance.... June
onwarss, sorry for the typo!!!, • promote the learnings of today with my
team...next week... Without fail!!
• Make current virtual training more interacJve...CHUNK IT!
• Pre-‐meeJng intro video. • Picture of the view from my window • Virtual cup of coffee • I'm going to use breakout rooms in webex • Send a picture of what's out your window (esp
when snowing in mn) • Use more interacJvity with wiki,
intercompany TwiTer, and informal networking/working together on daily work
• Host a simultaneous WebEx session for one of the global teams that I work with and involve my colleague in the UK along with the team there
• pre work. So they can be prepared to share stories on how to use new sales techniques
• I will create a virtual class on Adobe connect, this is part of my homework from the training last week
• I want to try this in a "summer camp" format with remote employees at work to get them engaged in a creaJve way
What ideas are you most excited to try? What are some safe and easy ways for you to experiment with these ideas in the next 3 wks? • Next Monday I'll have a virtual session and I'm
excited to try some ideas, specially provoking the parJcipants to share experiences using chat.
• Call IT AND CLE managers and create a collaboraJve learning group to share this info!
• Share with my virtual instrucJon team
