The World’s Largest Titanic Attraction Opening In Belfast

One hundred years after the birth of the world’s most famous ship, the £97 million Titanic Belfast has become a major new tourist attraction for Northern Ireland. Its centrepiece is a stunning recreation of the Titanic’s iconic Grand Staircase by Torquay-based architects Kay Elliott.

Titanic Belfast is an iconic 14,000 sq m (150,700 sq ft), six-floor building featuring nine interpretive and interactive galleries that explore the sights, sounds, smells and stories of Titanic, as well as the City and people which made her. The

world’s largest Titanic visitor experience accommodates a dark ride, underwater exploration theatre, recreations of the ship’s cabins, interactive technologies and a luxurious conference and banqueting venue, the Titanic Suite. As faithful to the original as modern building regulations and design constraints allow,

the recreation of the staircase is the focal point of the 1,000-seater Titanic Suite, Belfast’s largest dedicated banqueting space. The near-replica Grand Staircase is 23ft high and 24ft wide, has 23 steps, weighs nearly four tonnes and is made up of 10,000 individual parts. It was built in six separate sections using red oak, the same wood which was used for the Titanic’s Grand Staircase. Six joiners worked on the project and it’s estimated to have taken 1,500 man-hours over four months to complete. The challenge of matching the craftsmanship of original designers Harland & Wolff was met by Oldtown Joinery, a specialist joinery firm from Bellaghy, Co. Londonderry, using materials and techniques similar to those used in the shipyard 100-years ago. Alongside the design of the staircase, Kay Elliott was also responsible for the interior design, making sure a high quality visitor experience was created. Titanic Belfast includes four public entrances, a four storey atrium, temporary exhibition galleries, the 1,000 seat banqueting suite/conference centre, pre function areas, education and community facilities, restaurants, retail spaces and an underground car park.

Mark Muir, Kay Elliott’s Project Director for Titanic Belfast, said: “A major challenge was the lack of complete drawings of the original staircase. We developed a detailed 3D technical model based on photographs of the

Page 7: ATB Issue 2 2012 APRIL-MAY

atb:designed/built

original staircase onboard Titanic’s sister ship Olympic - a job which involved painstaking detective work over several months so we could be as true to the design as possible. The result is a stunning centrepiece of the Titanic, located on the top two floors of the attraction, that itself offers a journey through history, showcasing key points in the Titanic ship’s life. It is also testament to the skills of the many designers and craftsman involved.” Tim Husbands, Titanic Belfast’s CEO, added: “Titanic’s Grand Staircase is one of the most well-known focal points of the world’s most famous ship and is synonymous with the grandeur of Edwardian society. Titanic Belfast is the world’s largest Titanic visitor attraction and we want to bring the Titanic story alive for our visitors and guests from all over the world and replicate the timeless elegance that was designed to impress the first class passengers onboard. Kay Elliott and Oldtown Joinery have done a superb job on an extremely intricate and detailed process – virtually every part of the near-replica Grand Staircase has been hand crafted in the traditional way.”

Coillte Panel Products Supports UKTI And UK Green Building Council At Ecobuild 2012At Ecobuild (March 2012) the UK Green Building Council (UK-GBC) and the UKTI (UK Trade & Investment) again turned to Coillte Panel Products to supply FSC certified panel products Medite MDF and SmartPly OSB in order to create their largest presence ever at Ecobuild. As the number one source of ‘green’ information, events and activities for the built environment, UK-GBC uniquely brings together those involved in the planning, design, construction, maintenance and operation of buildings, along with NGOs, academic institutions and government agencies.Ecobuild is the world’s biggest event for sustainable design, construction and the built environment and the UK’s largest construction event. The stand-out feature of the UK- GBC’s presence was their ‘Big Tent’. Created using SmartPly OSB, sessions held in the Big Tent highlighted what is current and new in the sustainable built environment, and was the only seminar area on the Ecobuild exhibition floor. The criteria for the UK-GBC’s stand materials and the Big Tent theatre was simple; they had to be as sustainable as possible. The stand itself has been reused, added to and built upon six times, making it a highly sustainable and effective showcase of some of the certified panel products which can be chosen with confidence over non-FSC material. Coillte Panel Product’s leading MDF brand Medite provided UK-GBC’s stand builders Dacapo with Medite Ecologique MDF which has zero added formaldehyde and is FSC certified. SmartPly OSB3

was also supplied; a sustainable and structural wood-based panel product which is also FSC certified and has zero added formaldehyde. Used extensively by the UKTI for exhibition counter units, benches, signage construction, and to create a meeting space which featured branding for the campaign lead by the message “Green is Great Britain”, SmartPly OSB is also being increasingly specified and used with its raw surface exposed, offering a more rugged, natural design solution. The UK-GBC and the UKTI credited their use of Medite Ecologique MDF and SmartPly OSB on ‘product information towers’, and through the stand designers discussions with visitors throughout the duration of the show on the specification and use of the selected materials. With their own stand at Ecobuild, Coillte Panel Products featured the innovation and sustainability which is at the heart of Coillte Panel Product’s development and showcased its full range of wood-based panel products, from Medite Ecologique and Ultralite, to pre-coated site hoarding and security product SmartPly SiteProtect. An aquarium built into the exhibition stand contained fish shapes created out of new Extreme Durable MDF Medite Tricoya, demonstrating in real time its durability and dimensional stability, even in water. Branding across the stand highlighted the company’s long-term FSC credentials, its unique security of supply as Coillte owns the FSC certified forests and trees used to make their products, and that CARB2, one of the most stringent airborne toxic control regulations, is provided as standard across all their products. Yorkon Completes 50th Modular Petrol Filling Station Kiosk For Tesco – And

Page 15: ATB Issue 2 2012 APRIL-MAY

GALLERY

Off-site construction specialist, Yorkon, has completed another milestone for Tesco – its 50th modular petrol filling station (PFS) building for the global retailer.

Since Yorkon completed its first petrol filling station kiosk for Tesco near Gretna Green in Scotland, the modular design has been engineered to accommodate larger chillers, a toilet with disabled access, and continuous glazing to maximise views from the till positions across the forecourt. Yorkon’s 50th petrol filling station kiosk for Tesco was located at Leigh in the North West and was completed as part of a major new store development. The project was also the first application of Tesco’s latest kiosk design and successfully achieved an EPC energy efficiency rating of ‘A’.

New developments to the store design include reduced column sizes to improve visibility of the petrol pumps, disabled access, different configurations of shelving and partitions, and energy efficient lighting and refrigeration.

The modular building at Leigh was craned into position in just one day. All plumbing, electrics, partitions, sanitary

ware, counter, tobacco gantry, flooring and kitchen were pre-installed off site at the Yorkon production centre in York, reducing time on site to just four days. Other recent petrol filling station projects undertaken by Yorkon for Tesco include Northcott in Northern Ireland, Ystradgynlais in South Wales and in Devon, Humberside, Cheshire, the Midlands, Cleveland and Falkirk in Scotland.

Commenting on the project at Leigh, Richard Jackson, Tesco PFS Operations Manager for the UK and Ireland, said, “The Leigh PFS is a good example of just what can be achieved with off-site construction. It looks fantastic and the team there are really proud of their new facility. It is a first class petrol filling station – bright modern and functional, helping to reaffirm our position as a world class fuel retailer.” Simon Ambler, Director of Yorkon added, “We are delighted to have completed our 50th PFS project for Tesco. This partnership is the result of a long-term commitment and a process of continuous development on the part of both organisations, ensuring Tesco and its customers receive the very highest standards of quality, service and value every time.”

“Petrol filling stations are highly constrained sites that require specialist ground works for the forecourt. By using an off-site solution for the building, work on site is reduced and there is much less disruption.”

Tesco is the largest independent fuel retailer in the UK, serving over 4.5 million motorists every week. Leigh PFS is the 459th Tesco petrol filling station. Tesco PFS kiosks offer a range of convenience products at supermarket prices to help cut the cost of recharging fuel levels on a journey.

Yorkon is the UK’s market leader in off-site construction solutions for the retail sector, and has worked with Tesco for over a decade. It has delivered more than 220 modular building projects for the food retailer – from convenience and petrol filling station stores to award-winning 10,000sqft interim supermarkets and a 28,000sqft eco-store. Yorkon is part of the Portakabin Group. www.yorkon.info

New Clinic Opens In East Yorkshire – Constructed Using A Highly Sustainable

Page 17: ATB Issue 2 2012 APRIL-MAY

17

A new health centre has opened in the EastRiding of Yorkshire, constructed using a highly sustainable recycled modular building from Foremans Relocatable Building Systems.

Designed by architects Gelder and Kitchen, the new purpose-designed centre was craned into position in just eight hours over a weekend. The single storey building has been clad in brickwork to complement its location in the historic village of Cottingham – a conservation area.

Since closure of the clinic following the major floods in 2007, health services have been temporarily provided at other locations in the area.

The new centre has brought a range of community services under one roof again, including podiatry; consultation, examination and treatment facilities; hearing aid services; child health clinics, and community dental services.

Commenting on the project, Stephen Dale, Capital Projects Manager at East Riding of Yorkshire Primary Care Trust, said “This is a fantastic building, delivered on time, cost and quality. Foremans’ performance was

excellent throughout and the construction and fitting out phases went very smoothly. We had a good relationship with their team, who were happy to go the extra mile to meet our specific requirements.”“Speed of delivery was important to enable us to re-provide clinical services locally as quickly as possible. The use of a recycled building structure also made our budgets go further, providing excellent value, as well as having a number of strong environmental benefits.”

Henry Chadwick, Partner at architects, Gelder and Kitchen, added, “We are impressed with the finish and the space the modular approach has created internally. It is spacious and open. You would never know this was a modular building – or indeed a recycled building.”

“The installation was very professional and efficient and the finished scheme sits well in its landscape. This is a really good building, successfully delivered to a tight budget.”

All Foremans’ recycled modular buildings are fully refurbished with new windows, wall linings, partitions, M&E services, doors, flooring, and cladding, to create high quality accommodation for a wide variety of permanent and interim applications.

The recycling and refurbishment of relocatable buildings is also highly sustainable, helping to improve a building’s carbon footprint:

The approach produces less than 10 per cent of the carbon emissions compared to a newly manufactured building (source: MPBA).

Because much of the refurbishment work takes place off site, the approach generates fewer vehicle movements to site than traditional building methods, reducing congestion and carbon emissions.

By refurbishing the building modules and preserving the embodied energy of the steel structure, Foremans is extending the life of the building and minimising the volume of waste sent to landfill.www.foremansbuildings.info

restaurant in the UK, this buffet-dining flagship launches a new concept of super world restaurant being rolled out across the country. A Maxilift MXL MRLI (motor room-less) passenger lift and Trolleylift 250 HPU goods lift have been installed in this 1000-cover restaurant – first of eight planned in the UK, all dedicated to high quality global cuisine prepared fresh in front of guests by specialist chefs. Both lifts were adapted to suit the venue’s individual style and function. Hydraulically driven over 4500mm in a wall-mounted shaft, the 8-person Maxilift MXL moves patrons between the ground-floor bar and mezzanine restaurant. The MRLi (motor room-less) capability saves space by locating the lift workings in the pit. The MXL is the luxury Maxilift model and offers a Special Finishes capability to flex with every décor demand. The car interior is finished in polished black glass with

colourful patchwork floor tiling continued from the foyer. At ground-floor level, signature copper fasciae to the door fronts and surrounds reflects the venue’s individuality. Supplied structure supported for easy installation, the Trolleylift 250 HPU handles goods and supplies between the delivery, kitchen and storage areas ranged over three floors. Finished in tough baked enamel, it has been modified to flex with the layout of the premises: a 250kg model was uprated to a 300kg carrying capacity with left-hand hinged doors, and the top-floor entrance was configured right-adjacent to the lower two entrances. Both lifts have contributed significantly to delivering outstanding customer service as Za Za Bazaar Marketing Manager, Kerry Lloyd, comments: “Thanks to the bespoke Maxilift MXL passenger lift, people of all mobility levels can access all our facilities and really experience what this ground-breaking, super world restaurant has to offer. The

Trolleylift 250 HPU contributes to back-of-house movement of goods and supplies, helping us to streamline customer service and keep the unique buzz that is Za Za Bazaar’s signature.” The Maxilift MXL helps the premises owners meet the requirements of the Equality Act 2010; and the Trolleylift 250 HPU complies with the Essential Safety Requirements (ESRs) of the Machinery (Safety) Regulations 1992, also known as the Machinery Directive and EN 81-3 where applicable. Stannah is also providing full support with both lifts maintained by the South West England and South Wales branch of Stannah Lift Services. performance aluminium glazing systems from Wicona, which will have to withstand some of the most extreme conditions on earth.

Designed by Hamburg-based architects, bof Architekten, the research station Bharati will be sited on the Antarctic coast, having been transported from Germany via South Africa by ship as a series of prefabricated modules.

The station’s aluminium façade will be subjected to the severe climatic conditions of the South Pole, which include abnormally high thermal and mechanical loads caused by blizzards, huge quantities of snow, high wind speeds and temperatures of -40° and below.

A large proportion of the building’s façade will be glazed using Wicona’s specially adapted WICTEC 50 curtain walling system. This will feature triple glazing, highly insulated panels, an incline of up to 15° at the two narrow ends, and will achieve a U value of 0.8 W/m2K. The system also had

to allow for the assembly and disassembly of the façade for testing purposes in Germany before the final installation in the Antarctic.By incorporating a high level of glazing into the station’s design, the 25 staff working there will have a magnificent view of their polar location and it will counter their sense of confinement. 15 scientists and logistics staff will live and work in the station all year round.

Bharati is India’s third research base in Antarctica. It will be a two-storey structure, raised on stilts and is designed to have a life span of 25 years, as well as to minimise any impact on the environment. It will use combined heat and power from renewable sources for heating, low sulphur fossil fuel, efficient treatment of effluent, and all hazardous and sanitary waste will be transported back to the mainland for disposal.

The research station will weigh around 1,000 tonnes and comprises 134 prefabricated modules which have now been transported by ship from Antwerp

to Cape Town. In South Africa, a further 50 modules that make up the construction camp were taken on board for the 5,200km journey by sea to the site in the Larsemann Hills on the northern edge of the Antarctic. The scheme is scheduled for completion later this year.

The team based at Bharati will carry out cutting edge multi-disciplinary research and observation studies, including the movement of platonic plates, microbes surviving in the atmosphere and meteorological sciences.

Wicona offers a range of technically advanced glazing systems for complex and bespoke aluminium façades. Its products include unitised and stick curtain walling, structural and roof glazing, highly insulated window systems and heavy duty doors.www.wicona.co.uk

of the latest aluminium glazing system from Technal is a visionary new primary school in Hampshire for children with learning difficulties. The revolutionary MODAL low rise façade system was specified for Forest Park School near Southampton.

Designed by Hampshire County Council’s in-house architects and constructed by Morgan Sindall in a £8.9m contract, the new building has created an inspirational, child-centred facility which is set to transform special school provision in Hampshire.

The school is a collection of low rise buildings interlinked by a series of canopies and arranged around a number of courtyards. The outer walls are constructed of brick with inner façades of dark timber and glass, and a combination of dual and mono-pitched zinc roofs. The site’s landscaping was inspired by the heathland that characterises much of the New Forest National Park.

Glazing fabricator Solaglas installed Technal’s MODAL low rise façade system extensively throughout. Finished in dark brown with contrasting bronze doors, MODAL is used as fixed light glazing and

with FXi65 windows. Sound attenuated louvres provide additional natural ventilation, and the GXi sliding patio door, which is fully integrated with MODAL, was also specified, together with Technal’s CD commercial door.

MODAL is a rapid-build low rise façade system – and the first in the UK to offer integral opening vents. It has an innovative modular design, which gives specifiers a much wider choice of configuration options.

Nicky Dando, Head Teacher at Forest Park School said, “We are delighted with all aspects of the new building, including the glazing. All visitors have commented on how light and airy the building feels.” Commenting on the specification of MODAL, the project architect at Hampshire County Council said, “One of the key design objectives for this project was to maximise natural light and views out onto the landscaped areas, helping us to extend the building into the external play spaces. This is a sustainable building so we also needed to provide a good level of natural ventilation. The MODAL system could incorporate both louvres for passive ventilation and integrated windows.”

He added, “We are very pleased with the finished building which is performing to a high standard and has been very well received by the children, staff and parents.”

The new school, which has been created following the amalgamation of two existing schools, provides accommodation for 72 children with special educational needs, aged between two and 11 years. Facilities include a library, IT suite, hydrotherapy pool, hall, children’s kitchen for cookery activities, therapy room, office, dining room, soft play room, light room, specialist art room and extensive external play areas.

The scheme is targeted to achieve a BREEAM ‘very good’ rating and has a number of sustainability features to minimise its impact on the environment such as solar thermal panels to assist in providing hot water for the hydrotherapy pool, combined heat and power system, high levels of natural ventilation and highly glazed elevations to maximise natural light. The buildings are also orientated to minimise solar gain and improve cross ventilation, reducing the reliance on mechanical ventilation. www.technal.co.uk/MODAL

Aquatiere Has The Soft Touch

The Aquatiere No Scale saltless water softener is steadily making its mark amongst architects and specifiers. Recently installed at the National Railway Museum and on North Sea Oil Rigs, the innovative softener is proving invaluable where avoiding the need for the provision of salt and ongoing maintenance is an effective method to reduce costs. A conventional salt based softener can waste up to 180,000 litres of water over a few years. The Aquatiere No Scale softener uses Template Assisted Crysalisation to change the limescale in the water to microcopic crystals of magnesium and calcium which in there natural seperated state, do not form hard scale. The unit is simply fitted onto the incoming water main and requires no power, no drain and no seperate drinking water tap. www.aquatiere.co.uk

Renewing The “DuPont™ Corian® Experience”

A refined and enhanced colour palette for DuPont™ Corian® high-tech surface:an exclusive resource for timeless sophistication and superior versatility in design

Since its pioneering invention, an evolving and original colour palette has been a dynamic theme in the story of DuPont™ Corian® high-tech surface. Now this carefully researched offering has been once again significantly refined, as part of the inspired re-thinking that keeps DuPont™ Corian® at the leading edge of surface design.

The refreshed and re-ordered palette includes captivating new tones developed for a wide variety of architectural and design projects, residential and commercial, interior and exterior. This evolution is complemented by an innovative and user-friendly mix of marketing tools designed to facilitate the selection of the most appropriate tone of DuPont™ Corian® for specific applications, either standing alone or in combination with many other materials.

Today’s forward-looking design industry demands both style and performance that will stand the test of time and the inherent strength yet suppleness of DuPont™ Corian® makes it superbly well suited to receiving the most elegant of hues, created to endure, as much in aesthetics as in functionality.

Whether in achieving the freshest whites, the deepest darks, the boldest brights or the most intriguing grain and vein effects, the high-quality homogeneity and seamless versatility of DuPont™ Corian® has allowed it to outstrip other materials in the purity, consistency and extensive range of colours and tonal textures it can offer.

To make consideration and selection from the palette even easier, the spectrum of choices for DuPont™ Corian® high-tech surface has been classified into clear groupings of solid, translucent and textured hues, while the sample size has been adapted to maximise both convenience and the ability to appreciate the nuance of each tone.

In a further refinement, the sophisticated solid colours of DuPont™ Corian® have been chromatically grouped into whites; greys and blacks; blues; greens; reds and yellows; purples and browns – and these are now presented in their own dedicated booklet and sample box. Several unique, useful and inspiring new shades have been thoughtfully developed to enhance this collection of pure tones, intended to be of durable and versatile service to the world of architecture and design.

atb:products

Colours making their debut within the palette in 2012 include: five new solid greys ranging from the subtlety of Private Gray to the saturation of Deep Gray; four fresh blues such as Ethereal and Diamond; three variously nuanced greens from Ecru to Blooming; further neutral beige and brown options; plus the velvety richness of Royal Red, Imperial Yellow and Chic Aubergine.

The textured hues of DuPont™ Corian® have also been reclassified and enriched. Whether as finely grained, fascinatingly veined or presenting a fuller matrix of particles, these dependable choices work beautifully across a wide horizon of design schemes from residential to commercial environments.

Equally easy to live with as to harmonise within a creative vision, these modern and perennially popular colours also embody the traditional reliability for which DuPont™ Corian® is renowned. New choices such as Juniper, Arrowroot and Burled Beech have been added along this scale of textured colours from light to dark, neutral to strong, cool to warm.

The entire architecture of the palette remains available for full reference and research, both in a complete sample box and in easily accessed literature and selection tools, printed and digital. Those colours most suited to external façade applications are also clearly identified.

However, should architects find that they require a unique colour to meet the specific requirements of a large scale project or brand identity, in any application or location, custom colours are also possible with DuPont™ Corian® high-tech surface.

As much as DuPont™ Corian® offers beauty and inspiration, it is above all a wisely functional surface that sustains its fitness for purpose. Resistant to damage but repairable and reusable, it can conduct water without any danger of warping, be exposed to time and the elements without fading, return to spotlessness with simple maintenance and offer seamless purity to hygiene-critical environments.

Workable to an unrestrained variety of shapes, it welcomes pattern and decoration or subtlety and minimalism, while the silky smoothness of its flawless finish actively invites touch and interaction. Compatible with modern technology, fixing systems and many other materials, especially those with architectural nobility, DuPont™ Corian® high-tech surface can either dramatically set the scene or graciously support it.

The refined colour palette of DuPont™ Corian®, first presented at the Milan week of design in April, will be commercially available as of June 1st 2012 in Europe, Middle East and Africa.

New Aico Firecap Air Valves Combine Ventilation With Fire Safety

Aico is pleased to announce a new addition to its Firecap range of intumescent fire safety products in the form of Fire Rated Air Valves. The valves are designed to allow air flow from ventilation systems whilst at the same time providing an effective 60 minute fire barrier. When a hole is made in a ceiling to install an air valve, it compromises the fire safety rating of that ceiling. The hole must be fire stopped in accordance with Building Regulations Document B. Aico's new Firecap Fire Rated Air Valves are manufactured with a built in non toxic intumescent material that expands in the event of a fire to create an effective barrier against smoke and flames for up to 60 minutes. They have been rigorously tested by independent laboratories to BS476. Available in 100mm and 125mm diameters, Firecap Fire Rated Air Valves perform to the same level as normal air valves in terms of air flow, and are fitted in the same manner without any need for adhesive material or special fixings. They can also be readily retrofitted in place of existing valves. www.aico.co.uk

Cantifix Colour-Changing Glass – Perfect For Internal ScreensLeading architectural glazing company Cantifix has been engineering innovative solutions and championing products which improve quality of life for over 26 years.Brand design consultants Springetts approached Cantifix looking for a glass based solution for their reception area. The brief was to screen off the office area beyond without losing light, and without masking the feeling of activity in the office. A simple sandblasted glass screen was the perfect solution; but the clients wanted something more exciting and dynamic to match their personality.Cantifix came up with a colourful, innovative and experimental design - incorporating a sandblasted single glazed unit and colour phasing ribbon LEDs. The LED strips are fitted all the way around the internal edge of the frame, and when illuminated, the sandblasted surface of the glass causes the coloured light to diffuse in all directions – creating the illusion of coloured glass. The LEDs phase through a wide range of vibrant colours, creating a gentle but energising glow. The completed installation gives privacy to the office area without compromising natural light, and provides a warm, colourful welcome to the reception area. www.cantifix.co.uk

RGB Threshold - Accessibility And Thermal Efficiency

“Barrier-free living” is the promise of Roto’s DoorPlus threshold, a product designed to ensure residential doors are fully accessible for people with disabilities. At the same time, the door is very much closed in the face of wind, rain and outside noise, not to mention heat escaping from inside the home. A visible feature of Roto threshold is its two-part construction. The external aluminium section looks stylish in either satin silver or a bronze anodised finish and provides hard-wearing endurance. On the inside, a segment made from impact-resistant PVC creates a thermal barrier and greatly reduces heat transfer. The threshold is gently ramped for easy access by wheelchairs and there are no upstanding parts taller than 20mm. This low height enables the threshold to comply with the German standard DIN 18035, which defines the requirements for barrier-free living for people with disabilities and the elderly. www.roto-frank.com

Timbmet’s Oak TEC Sandwich Panels Provide Cost And Energy Efficient Doors

Timbmet has combined forces with joinery company ‘Meer End Stairs’, to produce 130 bespoke internal and external doors for a prestigious new build property in Warwickshire. The house owner specified Oak as his preferred material of choice for the doors. Warwick Aldersley, MD of Meer End Stairs, suggested TEC® (Timbmet Engineered Components) Oak sandwich panels as a solution in order to minimise the inherent movement that the use of Oak would cause over time. Available in easily machinable sheets with a cork core, the Oak TEC sandwich panels combine cost efficiency with low wastage, and provide a flawless product with added dimensional

stability far greater than that of traditional solid wood. In addition, when used in the external solid doors, the TEC panels meant the doors were perfectly able to meet demanding new EU U-value regulations. www.timbmet.com

DuPont Launches DuPont™ AirGuard® Smart, A New Humidity Adaptive Membrane Contributing To The Efficiency Of Buildings And The Implementation Of Sustainable Building Solutions

In response to the growing requirements for improved energy performance in buildings, DuPont Building Innovations announces the launch of a new vapour control layer for optimal airtightness in the building envelope, offering excellent adaptability to changes in humidity levels, thanks to the widest vapour resistance span (0.26 MNs/g to more than 150 MNs/g), on the market. DuPont™ AirGuard® Smart further extends the existing AirGuard® product range, suitable for both roof and wall applications, which have been successfully used by the building industry internationally. This innovative airtight membrane, developed for new build and refurbishment projects and specifically designed for renovating roofs from the exterior, will be available from April 2012. Considerable attention is given today, by architects and builders alike, to the choice of construction materials. Factors such as comfort and sustainability become important during the development of a project, while the building energy performance and the right selection of materials and installation techniques have become a necessity.

“DuPont™ AirGuard® Smart is a new, effective solution that delivers superior performance in terms of moisture management through its capacity to “behave

smartly” according to weather conditions, relative air and insulation humidity” explains Karel Smolders, DuPont Building Innovations, Marketing Manager Building Envelopes for Europe Middle East and Africa. DuPont™ AirGuard® Smart has superior properties thanks to the extreme span of sd-values from 0,05m to more than 30m (or expressed as vapour resistance: 0.26 MNs/g to more than 150 MNs/g) which allows maximum protection against structural damage. It adapts to changes in humidity levels and minimises or increases the water vapour transmission rate, as needed. It combines a drying-out and vapour control function in one layer. Due to its high mechanical properties DuPont™ AirGuard® Smart outperforms most of its competitors. Its robustness and transparent appearance offers easy and trouble-free installation.

DuPont™ AirGuard® Smart has been especially designed to work as an airtight layer for renovating roofs from the exterior. Applications include above rafter insulation or between rafter insulation, but it can be also used in dry lining applications from the inside.

atb:products

Technically, DuPont™ AirGuard® Smart demonstrates excellent performance: the vapour resistance is always below 5 MNs/g if the insulation is very wet, regardless of ambient air relative humidity. The construction and insulation can dry out to the inside, as well as to the outside via the Tyvek® breather membrane. Very high relative ambient air humidity should additionally be reduced through ventilation and extraction. DuPont™ AirGuard® Smart acts as a typical vapour control layer if the insulation is very dry: It provides a vapour control effect with a high vapour resistance. Diffusion occurs via the external breather membrane, thus the construction and insulation can dry out to the outside. These features make it an ideal solution for energy saving requirements and contribute to cost reductions related to heating or cooling.

In the summer, when the ambient air relative humidity is high (>50%), the outside temperature is higher than inside so the water vapour resistance of DuPont™ AirGuard® Smart is low and water vapour can, if necessary, migrate to the inside, so that the insulation and construction can dry out. While in the winter, the ambient air relative humidity is much lower with an outside temperature lower than inside. In this case, DuPont™ AirGuard® Smart water vapour resistance is high and helps block water vapour diffusion, so that less humidity can ingress to the insulation and construction.

About DuPont™ AirGuard® – DuPont™ AirGuard® products are air and vapour control layers for roofs, ceilings and walls reducing uncontrolled air leakage and heat losses. The overall balance in drying capacity of the construction is maintained with DuPont™ AirGuard® Smart on the inside and a DuPont™ Tyvek® underlay on the outside.

SE Controls Takes The Heat Out Of New London Apartment Development

Safety and comfort are at the heart of a major new residential development by Linden Homes in Hammersmith, London, which is using a combined smoke and natural ventilation solution from SE Controls to protect residents in the multi-storey apartment building. SE Controls developed the smoke ventilation system to remove smoke from corridors and stairwells by using a mix of natural air buoyancy venting and fan extraction through smoke shafts. On floor one to five, smoke ventilation is provided by extract fans located in the building’s cycle store, with replacement air being supplied through ground floor and air inlet shaft, while the sixth floor is vented by a 1.5m2 vent in the top floor corridor and stairs by a similar arrangement at the head of the stair. The SE Controls’ solution is also designed to provide mechanically assisted natural ventilation to help maintain a comfortable temperature within the building’s corridors. On the first five floors, extract fans, which run at half speed, remove warm air from the corridors and the system’s smoke dampers are opened as required by the building’s natural ventilation control panel. On the sixth floor, a dedicated tamper proof thermostat controls the lobby vent while hooded vents allow ventilation during inclement weather conditions. The integrated smoke and natural ventilation control strategy involved the use of nine OS2 controllers and tamper proof manual control points, as well as a range of temperature sensors and smoke sensors, all of which are linked to the main system control panel with a failsafe battery back up. Under normal operation, the natural ventilation (NV) system is active between 08:00 and 20:00, which provides ventilation and corridor cooling to the building. The NV controller scans the temperature sensors and allows the end of corridor Automatic Opening Vents (AOVs) to open when required. However, in the event of a fire, where the system is triggered either by a smoke sensor or manually activated, all NV functions are stopped and the OS2 controller for the affected zone signals the fans to run at full speed. www.secontrols.com

It’s A Wrap For Roof-Pro At Reading University Film Centre

Roof-Pro’s free standing support system has been used to support the rooftop services at the University of Reading’s new state of the art Film, Theatre and TV Department. The system has enabled the roof-mounted services to be installed on the building without penetrating the roof build-up with upstands or steelwork.Consulting Engineers, DSSR, specified the system to support six roof-mounted air handling units (AHU) and a chiller, each weighing 1,500-3,300kg. The double-stacked AHUs also required high level access platforms to enable the site services team to reach the upper fan sections for on-going maintenance.Roof-Pro’s solution included the design of pipe and cable-tray supports with a high-level ‘pipe corridor’ running the length of the main AHU plant area, giving unimpeded access to the tight plant area for maintenance teams. At all stages, Roof-Pro’s technical team worked with the

designers and installation team, providing on-site support to overcome the challenges of the project. In addition, Roof-Pro’s Technical Surveyor surveyed the plant area and requirements for the AHU access platforms once all the main services had been installed. www.roof-pro.co.uk

Walking Safely Above LondonBona Traffic Anti-Slip lacquer has been used to finish and protect the new wooden floors in the two aerial walkways on Tower Bridge. The finish was specified by a City of London Building Surveyor, who was looking for a highly durable finish with anti-slip properties. She explained “I specified Bona Traffic

Anti-Slip as events are held on both walkways and I was concerned that drink/food spillage on the Oak floor could cause someone to slip. Stewart Taylor of the flooring contractors, Bailey & Taylor, had already recommended we use a Bona varnish and, after doing my own research, it seemed that Traffic Anti-Slip was just what we required. The walkways are used by the public in high numbers and the high durability offered by Traffic again made it ideal for this type of use. We also wanted a natural look and we were reassured that we would achieve this using Traffic.

The City of London is committed to using environmentally friendly materials and Bona’s green credentials confirmed our choice.”The walkways had been carpeted until this year a decision was made by the Surveyors to find a floorcovering which would give a long term saving and would look more stylish. The walkways are now used as a venue for sophisticated corporate events and wedding receptions. Bailey and Taylor sourced character grade English Oak

planks and recommended using a lacquer from Bona’s range to deliver the required look and performance. The carpet and plywood beneath was removed to reveal rubber studded tiles which, as part of the fabric of the Tower, have to be retained. New battens, insulation board and plywood were installed and the Oak planks were then secret nailed into place with the perimeter boards being stuck down with Bona’s silane based adhesive, R850.The new boards were then sanded to a 120 grit finish and one coat of Bona’s Prime Classic applied. Prime Classic helps give a wooden surface a well-bodied appearance and also reduces the risk of sidebonding due to its flexibility. Finally, three coats of Traffic Anti Slip were applied according to the specification. A two component, waterborne 100% polyurethane finish, Traffic Anti Slip delivers a highly durable surface in addition to anti-slip properties conforming to DIN standard 51130 –R10. All versions of Bona Traffic (Matt, Silkmatt and Anti Slip) offer the most durable finish of all Bona’s lacquers and are therefore recommended for areas such as the bridge walkways where extreme resistance to wear is required. Traffic Anti Slip is supplied in a matt finish with a reflective value of just 25% which means the floor maintains a natural look even after the lacquer has been applied. A total of 480m² of oak flooring was fitted in the two walkways and the job was finished four days ahead of schedule. www.bona.com

Bespoke VMZINC For London’s Wallace Collection

The Wallace Collection is a national museum housing 25 galleries of French 18th century paintings, furniture and porcelain, a world class armoury and one of London's most important Rococo collections. Working with John O’Connell Architects and Purcell Miller Tritton a new roof over the east galleries has provided the opportunity to return ceilings to their former classical design, elegancy and glory.

VMZINC supplied cast zinc bullseye dormer windows which were designed to enhance the classical appearance of the roof and to accommodate ventilation outlets. A pre-weathered Quartz-zinc® standing seam covering was also selected to break up the surface of the upper slopes. Skylights were fitted at the ridge and above a traditional slate Mansard roof with lightwell projections also clad in zinc to provide an unobtrusive blend within the roofscape.

There was historical precedent for using zinc and Quartz-zinc was chosen for its traditional, lasting appearance and muted grey colour which is similar to that of leadwork. It blends well with natural slate and a variety of other building materials, particularly brick and stone, a factor which has led to its widespread use throughout Europe. Zinc’s malleability was ideal for the intricate bullseye dormer detailing while the low maintenance, long life expectancy and overall sustainability were also major factors influencing material selection. www.vmzinc.co.uk

Bouygues UK Uses Schöck For Sustainable Design And Build Projects New affordable housing developments in Brent, North West London, incorporate Schöck Isokorb® modules throughout to prevent any risk of thermal bridging problems and help optimise the sustainable nature of the buildings. The two design and build developments are part of a major new scheme, being delivered throughout the borough for the Brent Private Finance Initiative (PFI) housing project by Bouygues UK in partnership with Hyde Housing.

It is a scheme that will help Brent Council address the shortage of suitable housing for homeless families, reduce reliance on bed and breakfast accommodation, and modernise residential care services for people with learning difficulties. The two sites, which are about a mile apart, are located in Brook Avenue (left) and The Mall (top). In Brook Avenue existing

flats had to be demolished and 44 new units constructed over nine floors The Mall is the larger of the two sites and will see the construction of 88 Flats and Maisonettes over four floors. Bouygues UK liaised closely with the Schöck sales and technical team throughout the installation, leaving cut outs in the shear walls to take the Isokorb® thermal break units. The specific type of Isokorb® used is the KS 14, which is a load-bearing, thermal insulating element for connecting cantilevered steel components to reinforced concrete. Loic Menard, Project Director for Bouygues UK, Brent Social Housing & Regeneration PFI comments: “Schöck Isokorbs provide energy efficient thermal breaks that comply with our design and build sustainability requirements. The product’s functionality meets our objectives in achieving high performance buildings whilst reducing CO2 emissions during production and for the end user”.

This latest generation KS 14 module now has around 20 percent more load-bearing capacity in the bending moment, which means that the number of components required for use on site can potentially be reduced, saving on expensive structural steel and valuable installation time. In addition to the higher load-bearing capacity, the insulation performance has also been improved. The thermal conductivity of the insulation body is now 0.031 W/(mK) from 0.035 W/(mK). This is due to the insulating element being made of Neopor® (a foamable EPS polystyrene material) with added graphite from BASF. The Schöck Isokorb® range of modules offer exceptional thermal performance ratings and are the only products of their type to allow connectivity between concrete-to-concrete, concrete-to-steel and steel-to-steel – and also provide BBA Certification and LABC Registration.Schöck Isokorb® modules offer designers and engineers complete peace of mind, as all units meet full compliance with the relevant UK building regulations. The requirement described in BRE IP1/06 – a document cited in Building Regulations Approved Documents Part L1 and L2 and Section 6 in Scotland – that the temperature factor used to indicate condensation risk (fRSI) must be greater than, or equal to, 0.75 for dwellings and residential buildings, is easily met by incorporating the Isokorb®.There is also compliance with the Government Standard Assessment Procedure, SAP 2009, concerning CO2 emissions from buildings, and respectively heat losses through non-repeating thermal bridges. Here, the lambda values of the Schöck Isokorb® enables energy loss through balconies, canopies and other cantilever parts of buildings to be reduced by as much as 84% to 91%.www.schoeck.co.uk

Solving A Problem Of Student Concentration

50/50 COLLEGE Blinds have helped to improve student concentration at Ashville College, a leading independent school at Harrogate, North Yorkshire. The problem arose in south facing teaching rooms overlooking sports fields where activities tended to divert the attention of students. It would have been easy to install opaque blinds but this would have made the rooms claustrophobic and increased the demand on artificial lighting. The solution from CURTAIN AND BLIND SPECIALISTS was to install 50/50 COLLEGE Blinds with an opaque fabric on the lower half joined to a more open screen fabric in the top section. The opaque fabric provides privacy, and stops students looking out, while the screen fabric allows good light transmittance to the interior so that the need for artificial lighting is greatly reduced. www.cbsblinds.co.uk

RMIG Helps Give Sweet Future To Gateshead’s Toffee Factory

Distinctive aluminium exterior cladding from RMIG incorporating an embossed representation of the Ouseburn River, is helping give the former Maynard’s toffee factory in Gateshead a fresh lease of life. As the building’s exterior features a significant amount of bold colour, the architects chose the neutral metallic finish to contrast panels as required

for the extended meeting room boxes and stair tower to contrast with the with green, red and pink cladding used elsewhere. The 70 aluminium panels that make up the decorative metal façade incorporate a natural metallic grey anodised finish and were manufactured by RMIG to

the architect’s precise specification. While the matt finish provides a semi-reflective surface to catch the light and reflect changing weather conditions, the panels also provide a robust and corrosion resistant façade as the cladding spans the full height of the four storey building. Together with the factory’s original Victorian chimney, the stair tower cladding, acts as a centrepiece to the courtyard and features a representation of the Ouseburn River rendered in a series of convex and concave dome shapes, which run the full height of the cladding to add visual interest to an otherwise plain elevation. www.rmig.com

Remmers Drive The Corrosion Away At Eastgate Car Park

Eastgate Shopping Centre in Inverness houses a car park with 1350 spaces. CCCP were the on-site consultant engineers who tested the car park structure for levels of chlorides in the concrete and created the project specification which recommended the use of Remmers MCI and Remmers Betofix concrete repair systems. Essential works were then carried out to protect the embedded steel reinforcement. Finally a bonding bridge was applied and a new fibre reinforced slab was laid to protect the concrete from any further damage. Other concrete repairs were also carried out to the base slab, soffits and columns and all works were successfully completed with minimum disruption. www.remmers.co.uk

University Of Reading Gets New Music DepartmentOriginally owned by the Palmer family, of Huntley & Palmers biscuit fame, the land and buildings at Reading’s London Road were gifted to the University of Reading at the turn of the twentieth century. The focal point of the property is the magnificent Victorian cloistered Great Hall set within landscaped grounds, providing the perfect setting for student Graduation ceremonies and live performances by national choirs and orchestras.Reduced use over the last few years has seen a deterioration in the Cloister buildings. Since the injection of a £21m budget, these buildings have been refurbished to create a new home for the University’s Institute of Education, with dedicated spaces for the teaching of subjects such as Music, Drama, Languages and The Institute of Education’s unique programme in Theatre Arts, Education and Deaf Studies (TAEDS). It was important to retain many of the Cloister buildings’ original features, including a mixture of curved and sash windows, all of which were single-glazed. This presented a particular problem for the 2-storey Music Department which accommodates a mixture of studios, practice rooms and recording facilities and enhanced levels of soundproofing for both noise egress and ingress were essential. Main Contractor, Wates Construction, consulted secondary glazing specialist Selectaglaze Ltd. who have significant experience in dealing with acoustic problems and had previously worked with Wates on a major sound insulation scheme for the Symphony Hall at Birmingham Town Hall. The windows have been treated with hinged casements incorporating twin memory compression seals, multipoint locking and a 6.4mm laminated glass to ensure the best acoustic performance. Flush hinges and flush locks fitted with escutcheon plates provide clean lines and minimal dust ledges. The installation has also markedly reduced drafts and general heat loss through the window ensuring comfortable conditions for practicing musicians. Typically, single glazed windows reduce noise by just

25-30dB, less if they are ill fitting and laboratory tests show that Selectaglaze secondary glazing can improve this to approximately 40-45dB depending on the distance between the glass. As can be seen at the University of Reading, purpose designed secondary glazing can be unobtrusive and sympathetic to the character of a building, whilst still allowing full access to the windows. Factory assembly allows installation to be rapidly completed with minimal disruption to the building’s occupants. As well as its acoustic advantage, secondary glazing raises the thermal efficiency of the window and improves security. Selectaglaze offers a range of products accredited to “Secured by Design” accredited.Selectaglaze has produced an extensive range of literature - including Data Sheets and Test Results - all of which are free upon request from: 01727 837271 email [email protected] or www.selectaglaze.co.uk

Timoleon Provides The Basics For Bicton College's 'EaRTH Centre'Bicton College, set in rural Devon yet within 20 minutes of the centre of Exeter, is one of the country's foremost land-based educational establishments. Centred in a lovely Georgian manor house overlooking a landscaped park and lake, the College boasts the very latest in facilities and equipment linked to a forward looking attitude to all aspects of agriculture and allied subjects. Their latest project is the establishment of the Environmental and Rural Technologies Hub (EaRTH), a training and conference facility demonstrating all aspects of renewable energy generation and sustainable building methods. While suitable courses are already being designed for the college's students, the further aim is to educate the wider community in 'green' methods, especially through school visits. It is expected that around 10,000 visitors will pass through the EaRTH's doors every year.

The EaRTH centre, carbon neutral needless to say, has been created around two underused farm buildings on Home Farm, which is part of Bicton College. Equally naturally only renewable energy is being harnessed to provide heating and hot water for the centre and, since the comparatively low operating temperature of under-floor heating is ideal for use with renewable energy, the design team decided on the Timoleon Staple System to supply below floor warmth evenly throughout the two buildings.

The Timoleon Staple System is simple and can be rapidly laid even in awkward areas as Fords of Sidmouth the local firm used for this installation, will agree. When in use, heat from the pipes is reflected upwards from the insulation sheet, optimising warmth for the room above. The Timoleon system has a surprising double life as a Surface Cooling System, a far more energy efficient alternative

to air conditioning. EaRTH's buildings offer a comfortably cool atmosphere even in the hottest of summer months. When the outside atmosphere demands it, Timoleon's sophisticated controls switch the system from heating to cooling modes. In cooling mode, cool water is circulated through the heating pipes. In this way the 'heating system' cools by absorbing radiant energy instead of emitting it. While air conditioning requires large volumes of cooled air to replace the hot air, Timoleon's Surface Cooling absorbs the sun's radiant energy before the air in the room has the chance to become unpleasantly warm.

EaRTH is so well insulated and the Timoleon system so efficient, that the energy absorbed in the building is simply dissipated by a loop of 1,300 metres of polybutylene pipe in damp sand beneath the subfloor, which is well isolated from the heated area. In this way the building is cooled without the need for any refrigeration equipment. The result is a perfect indoor environment whatever the season, with reduced CO2 emissions and at a fraction of the cost.Bicton College's EaRTH centre will demonstrate energy sources that include biomass, solar PV and thermal and wind power in addition to air and ground sourced heat pumps. It will also showcase rainwater harvesting systems, grey water systems and reed bed filtration. www.timoleon.co.uk

Sika Watertight Concrete Chosen For Jersey Basement

Sika Watertight Concrete has been chosen by Mitchell Building Contractors to protect the basement car park at Sylvania, a prestigious new development in Jersey. The development will consist of seven luxury apartments, all with secure underground parking. Because of its close proximity to a tidal sea area, it was essential to provide a watertight solution to protect the underground parking area from water ingress. The Sika admixtures within the concrete mix work firstly by reducing the water cement ratio, producing a highly workable concrete that aids placement and compaction, and secondly, by blocking the remaining capillary pores, thus preventing water from penetrating through the concrete. To complete the system, construction joints were sealed with the SikaSwell® jointing system, which consists of joint sealing profiles that expand on contact with water to seal any voids between adjoining concrete slabs. www.sikawatertightconcrete.co.uk
