WHY? There are essential services first responders

will be focused on initially after a natural or manmade disaster. And you may not be one of the initial services.

By being prepared to take care of yourself for the first few hours after a disaster, you are freeing up first responders to handle the priority needs on campus.

By being prepared to take care of yourself you will recover from the disaster quicker.

Mitigation: Lessening the force or intensity of something unpleasant, as wrath, pain,

grief or extreme circumstances.

In late December 2015:

A major tornado outbreak and winter storm affected the Southern and Midwestern regions in the United States. New Mexico and Oklahoma were hit by a blizzard and ice storm before the storm system headed to the Northern Plains, Great Lakes and New England regions. Tornadoes impacted areas around Dallas, TX. Several states, especially Missouri, were hit with heavy rain and snow causing severe floods. As the system moved through the Great Lakes region, heavy rain, ice pellets and heavy snow fell in the entire region. More than 50 people were killed in the storm system and its aftermath, which made it one of the deadliest of such systems of the year.

Roseburg police detectives responding to the incident engaged Harper-Mercer in a brief shootout who committed suicide. The mass shooting was the deadliest in Oregon's modern history. On November 4, 2015, 18-year-old student Faisal Mohammad stabbed and injured four people with a hunting knife on the campus of the University of California, Merced. He was then shot dead by University police. Mohammad's history was put under investigation by federal authorities due to questions raised about possible “lone wolf terrorism”.
