We might still be in a deep freeze, however, I feel spring is right around the corner. One sure sign of thatis walking around the Milwaukee boat show, thinking of a new boat, or coming back to reality, and sched-uling work with our local mechanics or finishers. A special thanks to all the members who came out to manthe GLACBS booth at the boat show, and to John Baumann, for setting things up. We picked up somenew members. A special thank you to Scott Bruesewitz for refinishing the transom. One of our newestmembers Cara Gaitens had the large Glacier Lakes logo created for the transom. Cara and her husbandGreg became members at the show. Thank you to Scott Bruesewitz for signing them up.

I want to remind all that dues are now expected for ACBS and GLACBS. Check your name. If it says“lapsed” you probably need to renew your membership.

Now is the time to start and plan for the upcoming season; the spring meeting kicks the season off at Hi-way Harry’s in Johnson Creek, Saturday, April 25th. (page 3).

The Madison Boat Show Committee and the chapter have made contributions in The Madison andMilwaukee area. See page 4. Your efforts made it happen.

The next level of the marine varnish seminar featuring Mary Richter and Scott Bruesewitz is back March21. See page 11. The Milwaukee River Cruise is back for July 18. Ken Bourgeois is organizing it again.

We’ve been invited to participate in the Milwaukee Masterpiece, Sunday August 23, 2015 at Veterans Park.Organizers Leon Flagg and Mike O'Krongly will attend our dinner to give us some information (page 11).

The International ACBS meeting and Boat Show will take place at Bar Harbor on Gull Lake Minnesota,September 23-26. The spring Rudder will have all the information with registrations. We’ve got a busy season planned. A schedule of events is on page 6.

We will conclude the season with a dinner and meeting Friday November 20th at The Delafield Brewhaus.Changing of the guard will take place, and we will be looking for new directors throughout the summer.

ACBS is also looking for new Directors. If you are interested, please let me know, or send your informa-tion to Teri Hoffman, chair of the nominating committee at [email protected]. In addition toDirector Nominations, they are looking for Committee Members. We need expertise in accounting, mar-keting, social media and public relations. Please consider giving a little time and talent to this fine organi-zation.

Because I wasn’t able to attend the quarterly ACBS meeting in Las Vegas and because Glacier Lakes mem-ber Don Emigholz was there, he filled in as our chapter representative. He said, “I’ve been to a lot of (Retired Air Force Commander) meetings over the years and often times those meetings were a waste oftime. I was so impressed with the ACBS board members and how efficiently they conducted business.Among those I was able to meet included: Peter Stephens, Kathy Parker, Kirk Smith and Gene Porter.”

Finally, I ask you to keep Karl Johns in your thoughts and prayers, as he manages his fight with cancer.Karl has been instrumental in the development of the Glacier Lakes Chapter and has a deep passion forour hobby and membership. As I have spoken to chapter members about the benefits of being a member,one comment always come to the top, People!! People like Karl that changes our lives and helps put thingsin perspective. Stay close to your family and friends, and try to make someone’s life a bit better today thanyesterday!

ROBERTA HEGY Building a Glen L "Torpedo"UPDATE This past September twelve Glacier Lakes members and friends helped Roberta Hegy flip her newest project, a GlenL design called the "Torpedo". It is a 19.5 ft inboard single cockpit runabout reminiscent of the older Ventnors. Shegave a detailed presentation at last spring’s chapter meeting at HI-WAY HARRYS. Roberta hopes you can attend thechapter Friday evening banquet at the Spring meeting for an interesting afternoon, a nice meal, and great camaraderie.

MAACBS 2014 DonationThe Madison Area Antique and Classic Boat Showrecently donated $4,500.00 to the Clean Lakes Alliance(CLA). MAACBS has donated over $12,000 to CLA inthe last three years. The CLA is a not-for-profit organiza-tion devoted to improving the water quality of the lakes,streams, and wetlands of the Yahara River watershed(includes lakes Mendota, Monona, Waubesa, Kegonsaand Wingra). Role as WTMJ Traffic ReporterArticle written by Jim Stingl In My Opinion-The Milwaukee Journal/Sentinel September 24, 2014

Pam Baas was sky high again Tuesday when the Milwaukee County Sheriff'sDepartment finally handed her a community service award that was promised butnever delivered 25 years ago.

Throughout the 1980s, Pam (then Pamela Murr) gave traffic reports on WTMJ radiofrom an airplane to morning and evening rush hour commuters in Milwaukee. TheSky Queen was her jokingly dramatic moniker.At Tuesday's award luncheon, she kissed the crystal trophy and cried a little. "I'mkind of over the moon," she told me.

The Sheriff's Department considered her an ally back in those days as she helpeddeputies navigate traffic jams and get to crash scenes and other emergencies, whilealso aiding fire rescue responders by describing accidents from her vantage point1,200 feet above the city.Squad 712, the department called her back then, even though she technically didn'twork there. She was issued an emergency radio and even a desk and phone in theSafety Building dispatch center so she could file her reports on days when the single-engine plane was grounded by weather.

When she announced in 1989 that she felt worn down by the split shifts and plannedto leave the job, then-Sheriff Richard Artison's office called to say she was inviteddowntown to receive a service award.The big day arrived. Pam put on a dressy blue suit and was getting ready to leave.The phone rang. It was Artison's secretary saying something came up and they wouldhave to reschedule.

"I never heard another thing," Pam said. She pictured her award in some desk draw-er and someone taking it out every now and then and wondering who Pamela Murris.

Finally, this year, she and her husband, former radio news reporter John Baas, con-tacted the sheriff's office to ask about the award. Inspector Edward Bailey took aninterest in their plea and invited Pam to coffee in Mukwonago near where she lives.

Bailey couldn't find Pam's award lying aroundanywhere, but he invited her and John to the annu-al ceremony where deputies and citizens are hon-ored for bravery and service to others.Current Sheriff David Clarke handed the newlyprepared trophy to Pam and quipped, "We're a lit-tle slow sometimes."

Some of Pam's urgency to settle this unfinishedbusiness comes from the battle she has waged for11 years against liver cancer. Now 62, theMilwaukee native is mostly retired after workingvarious jobs following her radio gig.

The novelty of tracking traffic from the sky woreoff after years of getting up at 4:30 a.m. every weekday and spending four to sixhours a day in the cramped airplane along with a pilot. Pam lived on Milwaukee'snorthwest side at that time, so the two trips to General Mitchell Airport meant 50miles a day in the car, too, or sometimes on her bike when she was feeling energetic.

You don't hear airplane or helicopter noise in the background of radio traffic reportsanymore. WTMJ's traffic reporter now, Andi Miller, said she, too, works a split shiftbut "from the comfort of the ground" where you're not limited to reporting on what-ever freeway you happen to be flying over at the moment.

Today's traffic reporters rely on the Wisconsin Department of Transportation traveltimes, congestion maps, incident reports and more traffic cameras than ever before,Andi said. They also use police scanners, tips from listeners and social media such asTwitter.

Pam doesn't miss the job. She is still haunted by witnessing the crash of MidwestExpress Flight 105 just after takeoff at Mitchell in 1985. She and her pilot that day,Mike Collins, were next in line to depart after the doomed jet.

But she enjoyed the time with her work families at the radio station, Sheriff'sDepartment and airport. At least for Tuesday, her award citation said Squad 712 was"back in service!"

These days, Pam sleeps in. She still pictures Milwaukee as ribbons of roadways andinterchanges from above, but she doesn't listen to radio traffic reports as she travelsthe quieter highways of Waukesha County."Who needs those out here?" she laughed. "I switch to Sirius XM."

Their pas-sion is now boats and cars.

ThePark is flanked by Milwaukee's Art Museum on the south and the Milwaukee Yacht Club to the north. Proceeds raised by The Milwaukee Masterpiece, organized and operated by The Masterpiece Ltd., a 501 (c)(3) organization, benefit public charities which provide medical and social service care and relief to under-privileged children and families. Charitable beneficiaries in 2015 include Autism Society of SoutheasternWisconsin, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee and Meta House.

10th Annual, Madison Area Antique & Classic Boat Show

July 31 & August 1st 2015You are invited to take part in the 9th annual, Madison Area Antique & Classic Boat Show. The renowned Christy’s

Landing Restaurant will again be the site for the show on Saturday, August 1st. This location is simply outstanding for the public to view these beautifulboats on Saturday. On Friday we will be hosting a tour of the Madison chain-of-lakes; including Lake Waubesa, Lake Monona, & Lake Mendota (weath-er permitting). The tour will break for lunch at the UW-Madison Union Terrace and include a surprise tour of an interesting area on campus.

One of the most important aspects of this show is that the majority of the proceeds will go to the Clean Lakes Alliance. This organization is dedicated toimproving the lake quality within the Yahara Lakes’ watershed. For 2015, our goal is to raise $5,000 by receiving donations from the public and area ven-dors along with offering some unique items for sale at the show’s silent auction.

Awards will be given in several categories including the Best Chris Craft, Best Century, Best Inboard Motor Boat, Best Outboard Motor Boat, Best Non-Motorized Boat, Best Fiberglass Classic, and of course the “Best of Show”. This will also include the public selecting the People’s Choice Award Boat.

Please return your registration form quickly, as we are limited to approximately 45 boat slips (entries accepted on a first serve basis). Also, please includea brief history of your boat and a photograph (e-mail preferred) to enhance our boat show program booklet, which will feature all the show participants’boats.
