!At The Throttle! The close relationship between railroad expansion and the general development of the prosperity of the country is nowhere brought more distinctly into relief than in connection with the construction of the Pa- cific railroads. Yet, in 1850 nearly all the railroads in the United States lay east of the Mississippi River, and all of them, even when they were physically mere extensions of one an- other, were separately owned and sepa- rately managed.John Moody – American Financial Analyst As we get closer to the anniversary of the famous event about which John Moody mused (can you guess?) the more the antici- pation grows about how we will recognize and salute all those who a part of the connec- tion were. Im looking forward to the next meeting when we get to express in unique ways how we relate to the event. Over the decades of movingpictures, the history of trains has been documented much to the en- tertainment of all – from drama to comedy and everything between. One of my favorite films is Blazing Saddles”. Its a bit outra- geous (Okay, okay, its out right cheeky!). Bring your gear and trappings that will identi- fy how you relate to the occasion. The CAGRS membership renewal period end-ed on February 28th. We have 125 member-ships. There are still a few folks who have not renewed for 2019. Jim FioRito,

It is that time of the year that 2 offices of our board come up for election. Elected offic-ers term runs for 2 years. By alternating the elections every year new officers can easily adjust into their office with help from the other current officers. This year the offices up for election are Vice President and Treasurer. If anyone is in-terested in running for either of these offices please let Penny or Dolores know. The biggest benefit you can realize from volunteering is meeting people and developing new friendships. If you have attended any of our monthly meetings you can see no-one is left by themselves. The more you mingle, the more friends you will make. If you are interested please call: Penny Haberkamp 847-913-0096 OR Dolores Rich 630-894-8548

First you have to decide that you are will-ing to host an open house. Do you have trains and a track to run them on? Do you have enough space to lay down your track outside? Do you own or can you buy a small book to register the people who will be coming to ad-mire your handiwork? Congratulations! You have enough equipment to allow you to sched-ule an open house. We have members who are only thinking about starting their layouts. Your display and experiences will be helpful in getting them started. Remember, some of our oldest members have had open houses showing only partially completed layouts. Some would say that layouts are never com-pleted. Second you need to send me an e-mail with a short description of your layout and driving directions from the nearest interstate exit to your house. All this should be in my hands two weeks be-fore the next CAGRS meeting so that I can get it to the editor of our newsletter in time for publication before your scheduled open house. By Bill Schwartz NEW 2019 LGB MODELS LGB has released its new items for 2019 and among them are trains in a Coca Cola livery, yellow cars with red lettering. There is a Dav-enport diesel engine (LGB 27631), a boxcar (40672), a tank car (40810) and a combine (40757). The entire set measures 64 ½ inches (164 cm) between the couplers.

Another interesting new model is a White Pass & Yukon flatcar with a red Volkswagen Bus as cargo.

The movie for our Pot Luck Dinner was selected for an event that will be celebrating its 150th anniversary this year. The movie will be Cecil B. DeMille’s 1939 epic “Union Pacific”, the story of America building its first transcon-tinental railroad, right up to the driving of the final gold spike to complete the road. Like everything DeMille did, “Union Pa-cific” was made on an epic scale. The movie features hundreds of extras and plenty of rip-roaring action. There is a saloon brawl, Indian attacks on trains, and several exciting locomo-tive derailments, all done with that over-the-top DeMille flare. Barbara Stanwyck and Joel McCrea star. Stanwyck plays Mollie Monahan, the very Irish daughter of a very Irish train engi-neer. McCrea plays Jeff Butler, the man hired to maintain law and order among the hundreds of men toiling to build the railroad. He goes up against some bad men hired by a wealthy banker, Asa M. Barrows, to sabotage the work being done. The plot details don’t really matter. The movie is all about the actions that center on the love triangle between Stanwyck, McCrea, and a very young Robert Preston, playing Dick Al-len. Preston and McCrea were comrades in arms during the recent “War Between the States,” who now find themselves competing against each other over the railroad and Mol-lie. The story culminates in typical melodra-matic DeMille fashion. Also, I should mention some of the sup-porting cast. Brian Donlevy, as Sid Campeau, is the leader of the bad guys. A young Antho-ny Quinn and Lon Chaney Jr. show up briefly as henchmen of Donlevy.

This is an exciting movie. I hope you will enjoy it. Brian
