the MacKenzie art gallery has partnered with the Canadian academy of Recording arts and sciences (CaRas) and the 2013 JuNO awards to bring the JuNO tour of Canadian art to Regina. the JUNO Tour of Canadian
Art has previously been featured at the
art gallery of Ontario in toronto and the
National gallery of Canada in Ottawa.
the MacKenzie is the first gallery in
western Canada to host this exhibit.
the exhibition features works by
Canadian artists from the MacKenzie
Permanent Collection that have been
selected by recent JuNO award winners
and nominees including tegan and
sara, stars, arkells, sarah slean, Metric,
Emerson Drive, whitehorse, and Doc
walker.
the JuNO winners and nominees
explored the MacKenzie vault, home
to more than 4,000 works of art in
the Permanent Collection, and chose
artworks by Canadian artists with
particular meaning to them. their
responses have been captured in video
and include one of their own songs they
feel connects to the work. the exhibit
includes an interactive iPad bar featuring
the video responses and music of each

Opening Celebration: thursday, May 16, 7:30 pm, Free admission. Our major anniversary
exhibition, How We filled the Vault: Sixty
Years of Collecting, will be the largest
display of the Permanent Collection
since the MacKenzie opened its doors at
our current location in 1990. Featuring
approximately 250 works from a
collection of over 4,000, this exhibition
will tell the story of the Permanent
Collection’s evolution over the past 60
years.
a follow-up to the highly successful
Ruins to Renaissance: The Rise of the
MacKenzie Bequest, the exhibition
will focus on six decades of purchases
and donations that have built on the
founding bequest made to the gallery
by Norman MacKenzie.
the exhibition looks at collecting activity
decade by decade with two objectives.
First, it highlights the acquisitions that
have come to define the collection,
from its first purchase in 1957 of Harold
town’s The Tower of Babbling, to works
by luminaries such as Lawren Harris,
Pablo Picasso, Ed Kienholz, Bob Boyer,
Dorothy Knowles and Joe Fafard, among
others. Extended wall labels will provide
further context demonstrating how the
acquisition of key works of art established
new directions or deepened existing
holdings, and how they helped put the
MacKenzie on the cultural map. second,
the exhibition provides insights into the
contributions of individual directors,
curators, and donors. Illustrated panels
will delve into the collecting vision and
interests of the people who shaped the
MacKenzie Permanent Collection and
gave it its multi-faceted character.

Opening Celebration: Friday, september 20, 7:30 PM, Free admission. 7 offers an unparalleled
opportunity to appreciate and engage
with the work by one of Canada’s
most important early artist alliances –
the Professional Native Indian artists
Incorporated (PNIaI).
gathering informally at first in the early
1970s, Jackson Beardy (1944–1984),
Eddy Cobiness (1933–1996), alex Janvier
(b. 1935), Norval Morrisseau (1932–2007),
Daphne Odjig (b. 1919), Carl Ray (1943–
1978) and Joseph sanchez (b. 1948)
formed this influential and historical
group. Officially incorporated in 1974,
the seven artists of the PNIaI came
together as a groundbreaking cultural
and political entity that self-organized
to demand recognition as professional,
contemporary artists, to challenge old
constructs, and to simulate a new way of
thinking about contemporary aboriginal
people, their lives, and art. since their
official incorporation, the PNIaI have
often been wryly referred to as the
“Indian group of seven.”
Drawing on both private and public
collections the exhibition brings
together over 100 works including those
featured in formative exhibitions of the
group along with a number of recently
uncovered masterworks of the period
that have not been publicly accessible
for many years.
