for Maggie Ma...the show must go on

Greetings Residents and Tenants!

At Shanghai Centre the green spirit is alive and strong!

One of the greatest reminders that the creators of Shanghai Centre were green visionaries are the numerous planters around the complex which foster beautiful plants, trees, grass, and balcony planters. My favorite is by far the huge Japanese maple tree that towers above the Simply Life shop on the west side of the retail plaza.

You will be happy to learn that there are many ways Shanghai Centre conserves resources during its daily operation. From the use of electronic timers to control lighting programs and the use of CFL & LED light bulbs, to the replacement of water efficient washing machines & toilets. Battery recycling bins are also provided so tenants can safely dispose of old batteries. Many residents may not realize that all their household trash is sorted to separate plastics, metals, and papers… now that is green living right at your doorstep!

Perhaps the most significant commitment to the environment that we have made at Shanghai Centre is the replacement of major equipment like the chillers and cooling towers (provides the air conditioning), electrical transformers and the conversion from diesel fuel to natural gas for the building heating. These projects are nearing completion and have taken almost three years to complete. Annually Shanghai Centre will reduce almost 20,000 tons of greenhouse gases by using more efficient equipment. At Shanghai Centre you can be assured that we strive to offer the highest standards in service and comfort while at the same time doing our utmost to minimize the impact on the environment.

JAZZ2 0 1 2 J Z M u s i c F e s t i v a l H i t s t h e M a i n S t a g e a t S h a n g h a i C e n t r e

he eighth annual JZ Music Festival is set to descend on Shanghai October 20 - 27, bringing with it some of the top names in Jazz and other sounds to a city that has a long an unrepentant love affair with music. Shanghai is, of course, the home of Jazz in China - a position solidified back in the heyday of the 1930's when the music was the backdrop to a colorful world of gangsters, dance halls, exotic ladies, and an international cast of characters that inspired Hollywood movies, as well as a whole new style of music known as "Shanghai Jazz."

The key players at that time came from the United States, Europe, Philippines and of course China, itself. And just as the music always has done everywhere it reached, Jazz picked up distinctly new sounds and influences once it hit Shanghai, including Jazzed-up versions of Chinese pop tunes and sultry vocals sung in the Shanghainese dialect.

All of that came to a rather abrupt end with the onset of World War II and the ensuing Cultural Revolution, as once opulent dance halls were shuttered and the music was officially banned. But in the 1990's, the sounds of Jazz once again began stirring in Shanghai at legendary spots like the Peace Hotel and House of Blues and Jazz. By 2004, Ren Yuqing (former bass player for China’s Godfather of Rock, Cui Jian, and later for Jazz Godfather, Liu Yuan) opened up JZ’s, marking the official renaissance of the music in the city. "At that time, I was working at House of Blues and Jazz," Ren says, recalling his stint gigging in bars and hotels in Shanghai after his move to the city from Beijing. "I started JZ’s as a place musicians could go after hours, just to give us a stage to play on." JZ's was an overnight success, packing the house with a heady mix of foreigners and a new generation of cigar-puffing local Jazz aficionados, and Ren was soon asked to head up the first Shanghai Jazz Festival in 2004, organized by Lu Wan district. After the first year, Ren took over the festival, himself, changing the name to the JZ Music Festival. "That year, I used all of my own personal savings to pay for the festival," he says. "Tickets didn’t sell very well, and at first I was sad. But so many people came up to me afterward and said how much they loved the music, which helped inspire me to keep it going."

What good Jazz story would be complete without a touch of bitterness? And in the end, Ren's perseverance paid off in a big way. Today, the JZ Music Festival is the third largest Jazz Festival in Asia, and the largest on-going

music festival of any kind in Shanghai. Each year, it continues to grow and expand, drawing bigger names and audiences. This year, the festival includes Grammy Award winning names like Yellowjackets, The Manhattan Transfer, Ron Carter, and Roy Hargrove, among many others. Ren says that while in recent years, the festival tried to be more inclusive of other styles of music, including electronic, rock and pop, this year he has shifted the focus back more towards its Jazz roots. "There will still be lots of other styles of music," he says, "but all of them will have a connection back to Jazz. Like for example, if there’s a drum&bass DJ, it will be mixed together with a live Jazz band on stage." There’s also a big emphasis on Latin Jazz for fans of the South American-flavored sounds.

Ren says the festival this year is laid out in three stages: "Love My Music - Jazz Around Town" will put musicians all around the city, including everything from ukulele players to outdoor jazz performances. "Green Note" will be in the Expo area, featuring eight different stages with 80 shows, including the River Stage with Latin Jazz, African Percussion and European Jazz. But the climax, Ren says, will be the Shanghai Centre "Master Hall" shows, where the true master performances will take place. "These are the serious shows," he says, "where you will sit down and listen quietly, rather than the more party kind of atmosphere of the outdoor shows.

"I'm really happy to be hosting this event at Shanghai Centre," Ren adds. "It's the perfect venue for this performance in so many ways, and they also have a long history of Jazz, dating back to the 1990s. When the Beijing Jazz Festival made a stop in Shanghai back in 1996, it was Shanghai Centre that hosted it."

Some of the top names for the outdoor shows include: Roy Hargrove's RH Factor, Incognito, Roberta Gambarini, Brendan Power, Ochun, Khalil Fong and Karen Mok, while the indoor shows at Shanghai Centre feature Ron Carter, Yellowjackets, sax player Chris Potter, and Jazz drummer and producer Terri Lyne Carrington, who will play hits from her Grammy Award-winning album “The Mosaic Project.”

Asked what performance he's most looking forward to this year, Ren pauses and thinks for a moment, then laughs and says, "All of them!"

Tickets are available for the festival through Shanghai Centre and JZ's Jazz Club, as well as on the festival website at: www.jzfestival.com. Prices for the outdoor performances are 200RMB per day, and seats for the Shanghai Centre Main Stage shows range from 200RMB to 800RMB.

Olympic Fever Hits Shanghai Centre!Fans of the 2012 London Olympics weren't disappointed this year at Shanghai Centre. It started off in style with the official bell-ringing ceremony in the presence of several foreign dignitaries and even a former Olympian from the 1948 Games. During the three week event, all the games were broadcast on a large screen format at the Exhibition Plaza so you felt like you were truly part of the action. And for those who wanted to participate in a more active role, there was the Olympic Golf Tournament at Nine Dragons with more than 130 participants competing for the gold medal. Never a dull moment over here, even during the summer holidays!

Cooling Down with Summer DrinksSummer heat…time for a cool drink! Residents were invited to no less than two different alcohol tastings during this summer break… Beer lovers were invited to sample a variety of Australian beers, while those with a preference for liquor and cigars got an introduction to the world of Camus Cognac. Then again, you could possibly have enjoyed both tastings! Which is apparently what most residents did…Cheers!

Summer BBQ partyMore than two hundred residents welcomed the summer at another packed Summer BBQ party this year. A few drops of rain didn't cool down the enthusiasm and Studio 188 proved once again why they're the best rock band in town when they managed to get even the youngest residents on their feet and dancing. A special thank you to the team of The Portman Ritz-Carlton, Shanghai for preparing an impressive BBQ spread. Summer holidays couldn't have started off better!

The Next Miss Universe China could come from Shanghai! For the second consecutive year, the Shanghai Centre Theatre proudly hosted the Miss Universe China, Shanghai Regional Auditions! Eighteen beauties took the stage with only one mission: to become the next Miss Universe China! Yue-sai Kan, China's famous fashion & TV icon, personally presided over the jury. After a two-hour fashion show/interview session, the top three finalists will join the winners of other regional auditions for the National Finals in September. Good luck ladies!

What exactly do you do here at Shanghai Centre?Q:MM:

Q:MM:

As Performance Manager I'm responsible for leasing our theatre venue to clients.

Do you have an arts background?I'm a graduate of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music Arts Management and have studied the Guqin for many years.

Why choose a management job rather than one performing?I think the role good management plays in any performance is both interesting and crucial to its success. Behind every great performance there must be someone working very hard to oversee the management side of things.

What will be the highlights of this year's Jazz Festival?I'm excited that we have some Grammy Award-winning performers this year, especially Yellowjackets who I really love!

Is your job harder with all the new competition?Yes, it's true there is more competition now than six years ago, but I don’t think my job is any harder. Shanghai Centre has such a perfect location, and it has an excellent reputation for service.

Do you ever go to Rock concerts?Sometimes when I'm in Beijing. Beijing is the home of Rock music in China, but Shanghai is the home of Jazz. I'm more of a Blues and Bossa Nova kind of girl!
