October 2016 At the Helm Jerry Simoneaux, Commodore email: [email protected] Fall is finally here! Temperatures are dropping (just a bit), the humidity is lower, and the sun retires earlier each day. Autumn is a time of change when the earth reflects back on the past year and prepares for the year to come. For its grand finale, green leaves turn to colors of the warm summer sun and the multitude of hues in the flowers of spring. Then, fall to make room for next year’s leaves. As the days grow shorter, we, too, can take time to enjoy the memories of the year and begin preparations for the next. As for me, I have had one of the best years serving as your Commodore, and I look forward to the few months ahead packed with great activities and our incredible finale--the Commodore’s Ball in December. Then, we will make room for next year’s officers. This is your club, and just as you get to choose our activities, you can choose our next officers as well. If you are interested in serving as our Secretary, Treasurer, Cruise Captain, Rear Commodore, Vice Commodore, or Commodore, please be sure to show up at our next meeting on Thursday, October 20, at 6:00 pm (not Friday, October 21!) at the Elks Lodge in Kemah to nominate your candidate or yourself for a position. Our Nominations Committee will also have a slate of candidates to recommend. Voting will take place at our Annual Meeting on November 18. Because of the steady increase in the size of our club, committees are becoming more of a necessity than a convenience. If you are interested in serving on a committee, we will have information for you at our next meetings and throughout the remainder of the year. Among the most active are the Social Committee, Ambassador’s Committee, Cruise Captain’s Committee, Secretary’s Committee, and the Information Technology Committee. Remember, many hands make light work. Until next time, throw off those bowlines…catch the trade winds…. Explore! Dream! Discover! Jerry Simoneaux, Commodore

For the ladies who missed the Women on the Water session, you missed a great opportunity! The class was well attended and well received. We’ll hopefully will be able to get it back on the normal first quarter schedule for next year. Thanks to all the members who volunteered their time to conduct educational sessions at the Southwest International Boat Show: Bill Jenko, Chris Bown, Jon and Renne Siewers, Vicki Berkebile, Lori Friemel, Linda Schoene, Keith Gray, Phyllis Mitchell, and Lucy Newman. This was the first time it was held in the fall, and always a great weekend of checking out boats, equipment and partying.

The October meeting will be held on Thursday, October 20 at the Elks Lodge. The meeting will be held Thursday due to a conflict at the Elks. Our program this month will consist of those members who wish to run for a spot on the TMCA Board of Directors, and you’ll hear what makes them eligible for this office. This is always fun as some of our members can be quite creative in their campaign speeches. We’ll also have a brief talk about the Seaman’s Christmas boxes that TMCA participates. Come enjoy dinner and drinks at great prices. Be sure to bring your name badge. See you there.

As I look forward to 2016, I want to thank you all for giving me this As I look f

I enjoy dressing up Pier Pressure with assorted burgees and flags, particularly for our TMCA cruises. Many of us are in multiple yacht clubs and boating groups and like to represent all on our boats. At a recent event where we were asked to fly our TMCA burgee, I looked out on the harbor and couldn’t tell whose event it was due to other burgees in the prominent position, which led me to do a little research on proper flag etiquette for my own knowledge and I thought I might share. To some degree, traditional protocol has given way to more acceptable standards of today, due to

evolution of boating equipment, which can be a bit controversial. However, I consistently read that only 1 club burgee should be flown at a time, based on the location or event you are presently at/in. If flying multiple, the flag of the club that is sponsoring the event you are participating in should be flown above others (or at the bow) and if an officer of that club is on

board, their flag is flown directly beneath the club burgee. Also, interesting – flags are ‘worn’ by the yacht and ‘flown’ by the owner. I always enjoy the boating knowledge I gain being in this group.

Thanks to Karen & her crew for another great Nauti White Party, our Seagate members for hosting our Sept. dock party, Lakewood Yacht club for again welcoming TMCA and to Vicki & Kevin for coordinating another fun Pirate event. Linda, Vicki & Lori did a great job presenting Women on the Water seminar at the SW Boat Show and will be able to expound on their info for our W.O.W. class Sat. Oct. 1st! Ladies, you don’t want to miss it! That evening is the WYC shrimp boil, raffle & live music – this replaced our shrimp boil, so I hope a lot of you will attend. If anyone not traveling to Port A for Harvest Moon wants to gather locally to cheer the winners, plan to meet at T-Bone Tom’s, Sat. 15th. Good Luck to our boats entered in the Regatta. Our October dock party will be on the banks of the Bayou at Allen’s Landing on Friday 21st. Celebrating Octoberfest with brats, brew and music, so plan to come by land yacht if you’re not on a boat. It’s always amazing to see 20 of our boats docked in downtown Houston with the skyline as our backdrop. Our TMCA Cookbooks are going fast and are great gifts. Be sure to purchase yours from any of the cookbook committee members or at our monthly meetings. Please check the TMCA website calendar often to ensure you don’t miss any upcoming fun. If you volunteered to host an event, please enter the information or contact me to help. Cheers!

Wow! I don’t know how many times I heard that from TMCA members during the month of September. Wow! September was jam packed full of cruises and parties. The month began with the Labor Day cruise to Moody Gardens where everyone went crazy during the Nauti White Party. Karen and her crew really knocked it out of the park with games all weekend along with prizes, a wonderful White Food Dinner, followed by dancing and Karaoke. By the time you went to bed your feet were tired from the dancing and your sides were tired from all the laughing that you did while watching the Karaoke. We have some really talented singers.

On October 8th and 9th we have the wonderful Cedar Bayou Cruise, which is being led by Adrian Vuyk. If your boat has less than a 52-foot clearance you should really consider going on this cruise. Adrian is taking you up past the Houston Yacht Club, Anahuac and depending on the weather a quick tour to Cedar Bayou/Pasture. Adrian says that the trip will also include Smith Point, Bird Island and Redfish Island. This is the kind of cruise that is great for newbies to see so many places to visit and for the pros to get out and blow off the cobwebs.

We have over 10 TMCA boats entered in the race so this should be a grand weekend. We also have a large contingent of Land Yachters heading down to Port A to watch the finish and to cheer on TMCA. If you want to sit at home in your recliner you can view the SPOT tracking of the race by going to the Harvest Moon website. www.harvestmoonregatta.com ______________________________________ On the same weekend Roberta & Mic Netherly will be leading a cruise to the Galveston Yacht Basin. This is going to be a relaxing weekend to boat down, spend the night and tour the Tall Ship Elisa. All 30 spaces for the boat tour have been filled, but you can still cruise down to the GYB and spend the weekend with the gang. Contact Roberta at [email protected] for all the details. ______________________________________

Karen & Doug Chappell are back at it again for the following weekend’s cruise to Allen’s Landing. On October 21st to the 23rd we have over 20 boats that have signed up to cruise up the Houston Ship Channel to downtown Houston. This is a power boat only cruise, because of the speed that is needed to keep all the boats together. Karen has another fun filled weekend planned beginning on Friday night at the TMCA Bavarian Bier & Wine Garden Dinner. She will be hosting a Bier Tasting during the evening, so you are asked to bring a mini bier keg. Don’t forget you can always drive down for all the fun and

excitement. For more information go to: http://www.texasmariners.com/index.php/calendar/icalrepeat.detail/2016/10/21/286/-/allen-s-landing-cruise So, pull out your best Liederhosen and partake in the Gemutlichkeit! ______________________________________ For the final weekend in October, Dave Glasscock will be taking everyone to the Double Bayou Pasture for the Halloween Cruise. October 29th and 30th. You are encouraged to wear your best Halloween costume and don’t forget to decorate your boat. And the costume contest is for both people and their pets. Dave said that there will be a bonfire, music, singing, dancing and ghost stories. What else could you want? The Waterford Harbor club will be joining TMCA for this wonderful cruise so let’s show our TMCA colors and let’s get out there and party. Here we are down to the last quarter of a very exciting and progressive year. This year appears to be (in my eyes) one of the most active I have seen in TMCA. I’m delighted to have been a part of its internal workings. I’m currently putting together the annual budget results for the board and I expect we will have exceeded our limits in every category, which is not necessarily a bad thing. This year has been one of the best years we’ve had in terms of new members and revenue. Our goal has been to provide the most desirable events and more of them. I think we have succeeded.

I personally can hardly wait to see what happens in 2017.
