At the farewell meeting…
Retiring CEO : Friends and cousins, I cannot but look back with a sense of
fulfillment on the successful journey of the past 20 years.
I very much appreciate your hard work at earning the trust
of our clients and delivering service beyond expectation.
I attribute this achievement to your “ CAN DO ” attitude…
I truly believe this spirit will be alive in the days and years to come…
I Thank everybody.
The Third Letter
After the meeting…
The Succeeding CEO : Honorable sir, You have been an excellent CEO.
I have been promoted to CEO, just by virtue of seniority.
I admit my ignorance at leading. I cannot lead the company
as efficiently as you have done. Kindly teach me the secret
behind your achievement.
Retiring CEO : Just accept the promotion and occupy the CEO’s chair you
can learn to lead by leading.
The Succeeding CEO : No, sir I can’t. I can’t learn unless you teach me. So teach me
the secret behind your success.
The Third Letter
The next day at the retired CEO’s residence…
Retired CEO : Welcome sir, you can learn to empower , enable and energize
yourself by working with those around you. Nobody is born with
leadership skills. We learn skills by leading the team around us.
You can learn leadership lessons by applying what you have
learnt, to those around you.
The Succeeding CEO : No sir, I can’t unless you teach me the secrets.
Retired CEO : Well, as you insist upon sharing my secrets I give you three
envelopes. As long as everything is fine, don’t open these
envelopes. Only when employees strike work you must open
these envelopes and follow the instruction in each.
The Third Letter
The New CEO’s first day at office…
New CEO : Ladies and gentlemen ! You will be wrong if you think me new to this office.
True, until yesterday I was with you. From now on I am your CEO.
My predecessor has given me the leadership lessons. They are in these
three envelopes. I don’t have to open these envelopes now . He has advised
to open the envelopes only when problems arise, i.e. only when you strike
work.
So you can go to your work.
I shall call you when the situation warrants.
The Third Letter
After three months…
The employee strike work, gather in front of the CEO’s cabin shout
slogans against the CEO.
Employees : Zinda bad, Zinda bad… employee unity zinda bad.
Down down, Down down… corrupt CEO Down down.
CEO (aside) : I don’t have to worry about anything. My predecessor has given me
all the solutions. I must open the first envelop and get the solution out.
The Third Letter
The content of the first letter…
Blame the predecessor ,ask for 3 months to satisfy your demands.
The Third Letter
The CEO pacifies the striking workers using secret - 01.
CEO : Ladies and gentlemen, I understand your feelings. You have problems.
But you must understand facts. There are problems because my predecessor
left certain things unfinished. That is why we are loosing clients and
consequently profits. So I am not to blame. My predecessor is to blame.
Give me three months time. I can satisfy your demands as well as our clients.
Employees : We wait for three months. Whether you satisfy the clients demand or not, is
not our issue. Satisfy our demands in three months.
Otherwise, we will strike work.
The Third Letter
After three months…
Employees: Zinda bad, Zinda bad… employee unity zinda bad.
Down down, Down down… corrupt CEO Down down.
Mr. CEO, you said your predecessor was to blame for all the mess in
the company. Everything was fine during his tenure. Only after your
assumption of power, we have problems. We have waited for three months.
Everything becomes worse everyday. What have you got to do now?
CEO (aside): This is their union habit. Unionists always shout for no reason. But I don’t
have to worry. My predecessor has given me the magic formula.
The Third Letter
Exaggerate the failure of the predecessor. Ask for three more months.
The content of the second letter…
The Third Letter
CEO: Ladies and Gentlemen, I understand your feelings. I know our clients
leave one by one. We have not paid your salary for the past few
months. But you must understand the truth behind the problem.
Our predecessor was publicity conscious. He did everything for his
personal benefits. He failed to do anything for the sustainability of our
services. So, we have problems. But I can settle the issues.
He has left me one more lesson. Give me another three months.
Everything will be alright.
Employees: We already given you three months. Now you ask for another three
months. We grant you hoping for the best.
Another attempt to earn employee’s trust using secret - 02.
The Third Letter
After another three months…
Employees: Zinda bad, Zinda bad… employee unity zinda bad.
Down down, Down down… corrupt CEO Down down.
Mr. CEO, we all put our trust in you but you betrayed our trust. We no
longer trust you an inch. You are unfit to be our leader. We are on the
verge of loosing our jobs. We have waited for six months with high hopes
of resolving the crisis. But things become worse everyday. How are you
going to save us from the plight?
CEO: Cool, Ladies and gentlemen, Cool. I know your plight. But you don’t have to
worry. I’ve one more lesson in store left by the former CEO. Wait for just
one day and see the change. Everything will change in another 24 hours.
