A READING FROM THE BOOK OF ISAIAH 25:1-9 Lectura del Libro de Isaias O LORD, you are my God; I will exalt you, I will praise your name; for you have done wonderful things, plans formed of old, faithful and sure. For you have made the city a heap, the fortified city a ruin; the palace of aliens is a city no more, it will never be rebuilt. Therefore strong peoples will glorify you; cities of ruthless nations will fear you. For you have been a refuge to the poor, a refuge to the

needy in their distress, a shelter from the rainstorm and a shade from the heat. When the blast of the ruthless was like a winter rainstorm, the noise of aliens like heat in a dry place, you subdued the heat with the shade of clouds; the song of the ruthless was stilled. On this mountain the LORD of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wines, of rich food filled with marrow, of well-aged wines strained clear. And he will destroy on this mountain the shroud that is cast over all peoples, the sheet that is spread over all nations; he will swallow up death forever. Then the Lord GOD will wipe away the tears from all faces, and the disgrace of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the LORD has spoken. It will be said on that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, so that he might save us. This is the LORD for whom we have waited; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation. The Word of the Lord Thanks be to God.

My brothers and sisters, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord in this way, my beloved. I urge Euodia and I urge Syntyche to be of the same mind in the Lord. Yes, and I ask you also, my loyal companion, help these women, for they have struggled beside me in the work of the gospel, together with Clement and the rest of my co-workers, whose names are in the book of life. Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Keep on doing the things that you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you. Lector La Palabra del Señor Pueblo Demos gracias a Dios.

THE HOLY GOSPEL, MATTHEW 22:1-14 El Santo Evangelio, San Mateo 22:1-14

Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. Once more Jesus spoke to the people in parables, saying: “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a wedding banquet for his son. He sent his slaves to call those who had been invited to the wedding banquet, but they would not come. Again he sent other slaves, saying, ‘Tell those who have been invited: Look, I have prepared my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves have been slaughtered, and everything is ready; come to the wedding banquet.’ But they made light of it and went away, one to his

farm, another to his business, while the rest seized his slaves, mistreated them, and killed them. The king was enraged. He sent his troops, destroyed those murderers, and burned their city. Then he said to his slaves, ‘The wedding is ready, but those invited were not worthy. Go therefore into the main streets, and invite everyone you find to the wedding banquet.’ Those slaves went out into the streets and gathered all whom they found, both good and bad; so the wedding hall was filled with guests. “But when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed a man there who was not wearing a wedding robe, and he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding robe?’ And he was speechless. Then the king said to the attendants, ‘Bind him hand and foot, and throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ For many are called, but few are chosen.” All sit for Se pueden sentar

The Nicene Creed

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God,

Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all

things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he

became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended

into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the

dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With

the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy

catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the

resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Prayers of the People

Deacon

Creator, Spirit, Word, you freely give to us of your abundant love. We are the recipients of your compassion and infinite

mercy. Grant that we may open our hearts to share from our abundance as you have shown us.

Intercessors

Let us pray that we are one voice, one heart with all those who profess to follow Jesus and that together we will be moved to share from that which God has given to us to sustain our common ministries.

For this we pray:

Open our hearts, O God.

Let us pray for this great nation of ours, for all our leaders, that there be a recognition of how blessed we are and a

corresponding outpouring of mercy, love and compassion that others may share from our abundance.

For this we pray:

Open our hearts, O God.

Let us pray for this world that our God has created that we all may be more attentive to the hurts and needs of others

throughout God’s creation, that we may fully understand that our gifts are given to endow others. For this we pray:

Open our hearts, O God.

Let us pray for the communities in which we live, for the needs of our neighbors, for the businesses that employ us, for the schools and the university that educate us, for the people we see and recognize and for those whom we have yet to

come to know.

For this we pray:

Open our hearts, O God.

Let us pray for those amongst us who go through their days feeling unrecognized, for those who do not know how to ask

and deeply need to receive of our love, and for all those who need God’s grace. For this we pray:

Open our hearts, O God.

We give thanks for Connor Turgeon on his 21st birthday for whom the altar memorials have been given. Let us pray for the

intentions and the people that each of us holds in our hearts.

(Silence during which the congregation is invited to offer specific names)

For this we pray:

Open our hearts, O God.

Let us pray for all those who have died, especially Bob Dyer for whom the sanctuary lamp burns. Let us honor their memories and be grateful for the ways in which they so generously gave of their gifts during their lifetimes.

For this we pray:

Open our hearts, O God.

Celebrant

O merciful Creator, your hand is open wide to satisfy the needs of every living creature: Make us always thankful for your

loving providence; and grant that we, remembering the account that we must one day give, may be faithful stewards of

your good gifts; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, for ever and

ever. Amen.

Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

Minister and people

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done,

and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors

as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us

and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Celebrant

Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness,

and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

The Peace

Celebrant The peace of the Lord be always with you.

The Great Thanksgiving

An offering of money is received (during the anthem at 10 am). Then the people stand to sing the hymn while the gifts of money, wine and food are offered.

Anthem The Lord is my Shepherd John Rutter The Lord is my shepherd;

therefore can I lack nothing.

He shall feed me in a green pasture,

and lead me forth beside the waters of comfort.

He shall convert my soul,

and bring me forth in the paths of righteousness,

for his Name's sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley

of the shadow of death,

I will fear no evil;

For thou art with me:

Thy rod and thy staff comfort me.

Thou shalt prepare a table before me

against them that trouble me:

thou hast anointed my head with oil

and my cup shall be full.

But thy loving‐kindness and mercy

shall follow me all the days of my life:

and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

Hymnal 487 Come, my Way, my Truth, my Life

Celebrant The Lord be with you.

People And also with you. Celebrant Lift up your hearts.

People We lift them to the Lord.

Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People It is right to give him thanks and praise.

The Celebrant proceeds

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, creator of

heaven and earth.

A preface appropriate to the season is inserted here.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

Celebrant and People The Hymnal, S125

The Celebrant continues Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and

become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human

nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given

thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of

you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever

you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Celebrant and People

Christ has died.

Christ is risen.

Christ will come again.

The Celebrant continues

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his

death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the

Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all

your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him,

and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in

heaven, Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against

us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the

glory, forever and ever. Amen.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL Roland E. Holstead, PhD SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS Senior Warden Epiphany 2017

The original congregation of what was to become Christ Church Cathedral, the cathedral church of the Diocese of Western Massachusetts, was established by a resolute Episcopalian, surely inspired by the Holy Spirit, named Roswell Lee. Mr. Lee had been a Colonel in the Army of the United States, but who served as the civilian Superintendent of the Armory, Springfield from 1815 to his death in 1833. It was Colonel Lee, as he continued to be called, who discerned the need for a room for “religious worship” in a building on the federal property. A chapel for the use of the workers at the Armory and town’s people was established. Col. Lee prevailed upon the Rev. Titus Strong, Rector of St. James (Episcopal) Greenfield, Massachusetts to officiate at its dedication on May 13, 1817. The small congregation struggled for survival, but persevered and was blessed with growth. By 1838, Colonel Lee’s own son, Henry, was called to be the first permanent rector of Christ Church. Within two years, the congregation had enabled sufficiently through the succor of God to build a small church and rectory on State Street between Dwight and Chestnut Streets. The congregation was growing so large that by 1874 a new larger church building was needed. The new Christ Church was built on the Chestnut Street hill overlooking the City of Springfield. That magnificent church was erected according to Norman architecture and made out of (East) Longmeadow brownstone. The cornerstone was laid on November 10, 1875 and the first Service was held on May 21, 1876. With the newly completed church came a new rector, the Rev. John C. Brooks who served until his death in 1907. During his tenure, the congregation continued to grow. The property on the south side of the church was purchased and given to the City to become Merrick Park; ensuring that a building would not be constructed which would block the visibility of the Christ Church from State Street. Land was exchanged with the Springfield Library and Museum Association and a new parish hall and rectory were built. The Diocese of Western Massachusetts was formed in 1901, but the diocese and the bishop did not have a cathedral. It was suggested by the Rev. Mr. Brooks that Christ Church should become the diocesan cathedral, but his untimely death followed a few years later by the premature death of the first diocesan bishop, Alexander H. Vinton, delayed any further discussion. It was not until 1928 when the second bishop, The Right Rev. Frederick F. Davies, began deliberations with the vestry of Christ Church to establish Christ Church as the diocesan cathedral. An act of incorporate the Cathedral Church of the Diocese of Western Massachusetts by the General Court was passed on February 7,1929. The Preamble of the Constitution states:

This Cathedral is established in the Faith of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for the glory of God and the good of men. It is the Diocesan Church of the Diocese of Western Massachusetts, belonging to the Clergy and Laity of the Diocese and for their use, and also a House of Prayer for all people who may resort thereto to worship God. The Cathedral is the official seat and spiritual home of the Bishop and the center of Diocesan worship and work. It shall set an example of constant and well-ordered worship, of effective preaching, of missionary zeal, and of devotion to do good works.

The interior of Christ Church was renovated to reflect its new status as a cathedral church under the direction and with the leadership of the second dean, The Very Rev. Percy T. Edrop. A memorial gift to honor John B. Stebbins enabled the acquisition of a new High Altar made of white Italian marble and a Reredos with its central panel depicting the Ascension. The Reredos was designed and carved by Alois Lang of the famous wood carving family from Oberammergau, Germany. A second generous gift in memory of William C. Simmons provided the Narthex Screen with massive center doors. The John Cotton Brooks pulpit and later the 14th century style Mackay-Smith lectern acquired from the National Cathedral and the Kendrick Baptismal Font completed much of what we see today. Some trial structural changes were instituted by Dean Malcolm W. Eckel during some turbulent times in the church and the nation during the late 1960’s and 1970’s. Nevertheless, the Cathedral continued to be blessed. In 1990, during the deanship of The Very Rev. Earl Whepley, the interior of the cathedral was redecorated and the high altar was moved into the chancel under the rood arch. The seventh dean, The Very Rev. James G. Munroe,

continued the tradition of outstanding preaching and well-ordered worship. A most significant contribution to the life of the Cathedral was the dean’s passion for community engagement and justice for the hungry and homeless. His support and encouragement for a Spanish Speaking Eucharist resulted in the growth of a Hispanic ministry in the City of Springfield. That work continued with the appointment of the Canon Residentiary, The Rev. Michael Devine, followed by The Rev. Tom Callard, who continued to foster growth of the Hispanic Congregation through a caring and endearing cultural ministry to many of the most under served in the community and the church while assisting in the ministry to the entire Cathedral congregation. Canon Callard’s energy and creativity made him an ideal appointment by Bishop Douglas Fisher to serve as the Priest-in-Charge of Christ Church Cathedral upon the retirement of Dean Munroe in 2015. Canon Callard was subsequently called to be the eighth dean on February 2, 2017, Candlemas, which celebrates the presentation of the child Jesus; Jesus’ first entry into the temple; and the purification of the Virgin Mary. He was installed in a joyous service on Friday, May 19th. Eddy Lopez was appointed as the Canon to the Cathedral in August of 2017, adding the cultural and linguistic gifts of a Latino Roman Catholic priest who is being received as an Episcopal Priest. Adding to that diversity in 2016 Bishop Fisher appointed Rabbi Mark Shapiro as the “Rabbi-in-Residence,” a first in the Episcopal Church.
