Effect of Nutrient Supplements on Cardiovascular Health*
Cardiovascular Treatments Programs
Literature on cardiovascular disease development reveal oxidative stress, inflammation and autoimmune dysfunction as few primary contributors
3 promising nutrient supplements include:
Resveratrol – Polyphenol found mainly in grape skin
– Seen in several human epidemiological studies to have:
Ability to reduce risk of morbidity/mortality from cardiovascular complications
Widely-known antioxidant and antiapoptoic effects
Role in mechanisms involved in improved cardiac function,. i.e., attenuate heart contraction associated with heart failure
Reverse dyslipidemia
Curcumin – Phytoceutical and polyphenol, main active ingredient in turmeric
– Seen in animal models and human subjects to have:
Anti-atherosclerotic, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties
Cardioprotective abilities
Lower low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol
Raise high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol
Reduce lipid peroxidation
Nitric Oxide – Endogenous molecule, naturally occurring
– Plays important role in:
Regulating myocardial contractility
Maintaining endothelial structure
Maintaining blood pressure
– Studies have shown:
Inhibited nitric oxide production can lead to pathogenesis of many common cardiovascular diseases such as essential hypertension and atherosclerosis 29

Our Recent Publications
Vitamin D:
Studies show an alarming association between vitamin D deficiency and heart failure, but mixed results from prospective vitamin D supplementation trials necessitate further trials to test efficacy of vitamin D therapy in heart failure.
Andropause:
Increasing data reveals the impact of low levels of androgen in older age (andropause) on the progression of cardiovascular disease, leading to a controversial discussion that hormone replacement therapy used for male menopause may preserve the integrity of cardiovascular health in older age.
Testosterone:
Since heart failure is influenced by neurohormonal regulation adjustments, studies show male patients with heart failure are severely testosterone deficient; clinical trials confirm that they symptomatically improve when treated with testosterone
supplementation.
Growth Hormone:
Because growth hormone is necessary for cardiac growth and function, experimental studies and clinical trials illustrate how this hormone has potential as an adjunctive therapy in treating heart failure since it has protective effects in the
cardiovascular system.
Our Recent Sexual Dysfunction Articles:
A study was conducted to evaluate the impact of sexual dysfunction on the quality of life, physical and mental health, and depressive symptoms after heart transplantation with results revealing that recipients with sexual dysfunction had worse general health but not depressive symptoms. This indicates a more physically-related cause.
As an early correlate for the presence of ischemic heart disease, sexual dysfunction can be treated with 3 phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE-5) inhibitors which also have effects on cardiovascular health, eliciting in vivo and in vitro studies to examine the beneficial effects of these inhibitors in myocardial infarction and endothelial dysfunction.
Common amongst heart failure patients, erectile dysfunction has a negative impact on the quality of life which prompted a case report of a patient with heart failure who underwent cardiac resynchronization therapy and, subsequently, improved sexual function in the patient was achieved.
