Preamble The driving force tool for most developmental agenda such as the MDGs, NEPAD, and Vision at all levels is Information and Communications Technology ICT. ICT is an Empowering Technology If rightly deployed, it leads to productivity, improvements and prosperity of Individual, Organizational, Society at National and Global levels. 4

About Us The High Tech Women Centre for Nigerian Women and Youths is a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGOs) established and incorporated under Act 1, 1990 Part C of the Corporate Affairs Commission, to train, empower and build capacity in women and youths in Information Communications Technology (ICT) across Nigeria. This marks her 10 th years of leading the vanguard for empowering Nigerian Women and Youths (including Children) in ICTs. 5

Brief on High-Tech Centre for Women and Youths Vision: To see Nigerian women and youths become ICT literate for National development Mission: To become a leading capacity building Centre in Information Technology for the development of women and youths in Nigeria. 6

Brief on High-Tech Centre for Women and Youths Aims and Objectives 1. To provide computer education and Information Technology literacy for Nigerian women and youths at all levels. 2. To create avenues to educate Nigeria women and youths in ICT by organising seminars, workshops, summits, IT camps and conferences. 3. To encourage networking and cooperation for Nigeria women and youths development in Information Technology with other national and international organisations (private and public), non-governmental organisations and voluntary agencies with similar objectives and initiatives. 4. To facilitate the establishment of IT centres and ICT Clubs in schools, work places and communities where women and youths can have access to information communications technology. 5. To serve as repository of information to women and especially girls on ICT for empowerment in economic and educational development. 7

Our Activities Achieving our objectives, we have the following activities: We organise several Computer and ICT trainings for women and youths on a yearly basis which includes: Children ICT Summit tagged e-Innovate Nigeria February / March, 2014 Ladies IT SUMMIT (LITS) for female students in Tertiary Institutions April, 2014 ICT Summer Academy Camp (ISAC) for Youths July, 2014 Womens ICT SUMMIT (WITS) for all women from 18 years and above September, 2014 Workshop for Wives of local government chairmen, House of Assembly members at states and local government areas in Nigeria Every Quarter of the Year ICT Exchange Programmes for Youths and Women in West Africa (ISAC Abroad) July Yearly Womens ICT Development in Africa Project (WIDAP)- November Yearly Other Commitments Conduct Policy Research on topical issues relating to women, girls and youths in ICTs Regularly (all year round Facilitate a Facebook page and active website for women and youth to share knowledge and information from time to time 8

Brief on High-Tech Centre for Women and Youths To achieve our aims, we organize workshops, trainings and seminars for the various target groups all through the year so as to develop IT capabilities that Nigeria needs in Women. A national workshop / conference is organized for women in Nigeria by the NGO in August yearly, and it is expected to start for the younger girls soon. As a non-governmental organization, not-for-profit, we depend solely on donations (gotten locally for now), charged fees and private individuals contribution for our various activities. 9

ICT Defined Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is technology that supports activities involving the creation, storage, manipulation and communication of information, together with the related methods, management and application. It enables us to record, store, process, retrieve, and transmit information. It encompasses modern technologies such as computers, telecommunications, facsimile and microelectronics. It also refers to technologies that provide access to information through telecommunications. 10

ICTs This includes the Internet, wireless networks, cell phones, Television, Radios, and other communication mediums. They are technologies that determine the efficiency and effectiveness with which we communicate and the devices that allow us to handle information. 11

ICT Advantages Enable changes in the way people live, work, interact and acquire knowledge Communication in real-time with others in different countries using technologies such as instant messaging, and video-conferencing Social networking websites like Face book allow users to remain in contact and communicate on a regular basis. The acquisition, processing, storage and dissemination of vocal, pictorial, textual and numerical information by a microelectronics People use communication sources to articulate their grievances on local problems. 16

Application of ICTs ICT powers our access to information, Enables new forms of communication, On-line services in the spheres: Tele-medicine; E-commerce; Culture; Entertainment; and Education Community Development 17

The Rural Communities There are several development issues facing the rural poor. Poverty alleviation ; Social and physical infrastructure; Social barriers ; Capacities of people through education Access to good quality education; Below subsistence levels, etc. Solution lies in awareness, empowering people and providing opportunities for development All these need appropriate communication support. 18

Community Development A community is a group of interacting people living in some closeness, they share common value, have some degree of cohesiveness. ICT will attract community development When the people appreciate information; Actively participate in decision making process ; Form networks with everyone as a potential stakeholders Pool the collective intelligence of the people Create opportunities for free and Provide unrestricted input for better decisions that will help move the community forward 19

Utilizing ICT for Community Development The first area of ICT utilization is through social media explored for community development in the use of blogs and blogging which involves the posting of commentary or news on a particular subject. Users can view the content passively or if allowed, can react to posts and contribute content). It also allows users to share ideas and user-generated content (including images and video) while building connections and associations, both personal and professional. Examples include the sites Blogger (blogger.com), Word press (wordpress.org), and Twitter (twitter.com) The use of Internet can assist practitioners in community development The use of internet for community development can empower those who have the skills and abilities to use these ICT innovative technologies (Social media and internet) It helps to break away from the traditional command and control models of management. 20

ICT Initiatives in Nigeria CANi Computer for All Nigerians Initiative : Its PPPP, 2006 to make computers available to all Nigerians at a affordable price SABi State Accelerated Broadband Initiative : Its a private sector building and running broadband infrastructure with government support. Provision of wireless broadband services to stimulate increase in internet usage e-education, commerce,governance IXP Internet Exchange Point : local internet traffic stay within, to ensure faster and a more effective communication Domain Name Administration in Nigeria Unified Licensing Regime: To enable telecom operators provide many services Adoption of Space Technology : 2 Satellites have been launched earth observation and communication satellites Rural Telephony and Nigerian post WSIS monitoring and Evaluation exercise 21

ICT Initiatives Galaxy Plc provide single national backbone over which all services ride to reduce the cost of communication. Harmonization of broadband, VSAT and wireless technology in the country School Net Nigeria; Creation of Virtual libraries USPF: It is a special fund as stated in the 2003 Telecommunication Act. The aim is to provide telecommunications and ICT services to underserved and deprived groups and communities in the Nigeria. 500 schools spread across the six geopolitical zones of the country with complete set of Internet tools and facilities while other projects are also in the pipeline. Wire Nigeria ( WiN); BTRAIN project addressing the dearth and inadequacies of fiber optic backbone networks, transmission and infrastructure NITDEF: The NITDA act as signed into law in 2007empowers a levy of 1% to be charged on the profit before tax of companies and enterprises with an annual turnover of N100 million and above.
