The process selection is adapted tocustomer requirements using Lindesextensive knowledge of air separationplant operation. All state-of-the-art airseparation technologies such as internal

compression for GOX and GAN andcryogenic argon production are available. The schematic illustrated below showsa typical configuration of a packaged airseparation plant.

Air is drawn through an air filter to removedust and other particles before enteringthe main air compressor.

Downstream from the main compressor, the air enters the process air coolingstage, where it is washed and cooledin countercurrent against a stream ofwater. This washing process also removesharmful components of the process airsuch as SO2, SO3 and NH3.

Remaining contaminants in the processair such as water vapor, CO2, N2O andpotentially hazardous hydrocarbons areadsorbed from the air by passing throughone of the two molecular sieve adsorbers.

One adsorber is in operation while theother one is in regeneration mode.

After further cooling of the dry, pure air inthe main heat exchanger, the air entersthe pressure column where it is separatedinto pure nitrogen, yielding at the top andoxygen enriched liquid at the bottom. Therequired reflux for rectification is providedby condensation of gaseous nitrogenagainst boiling oxygen in the condenser/reboiler.

A part of the liquid nitrogen is usedas reflux for the pressure column; theremainder is sub-cooled and passed tothe top of the low pressure column. Liquidnitrogen for the customer is then drawn

off and sent out to the LIN tank. Liquidoxygen is taken from the bath of thecondenser and fed to the LOX tank.

Liquid oxygen and liquid nitrogen arepumped through the main heat exchangeand vaporized at the customers specifiedgas pressure for GOX and GAN.

Refrigeration needs of the plantnecessitated by insulation losses, heatexchanger losses and removal of coldliquids out of the low temperature sectionare mainly met by isentropic expansion ofair in the expansion turbine.

Plant designs are created with the useof advanced engineering tools including

process calculation and modeling withLindes in-house developed OPTISIMsimulation program as well as 3D CADmodeling (including isometric andmaterial list generator for plant designand model review).

The highest quality standards areachieved via a stringent quality system inaccordance with ISO 9000 for engineeringdesign and manufacturing.

Erection and start-up time is minimizedwith pre-packaged and tested units

(i.e. air compressor, refrigeration unit, molecular sieve valve skid and cold boxunits). Electrical and control equipmentare ready installed in containers ready forplug and play installation.

Sophisticated interlock functions protectthe plant against unforeseen failures ormal-operation and maintain the plant ina safe condition in the event of powerfailure.

Highly developed and proven controlphilosophy and software ensures

    reliable, convenient and economic plantoperation.

Personal protection measures areapplied wherever the safety of operatingpersonnel may be jeopardized by theprocess, rotating machinery or exposure

    to extreme temperatures.

In-house manufactured components suchas plate-fin heat exchangers and columnsare installed to self-supporting steel

casings. The sizes of the cold boxes aredesigned for road transportation, and sitehandling is simplified.

Other modules such as molecular sievevalves, cryogenic pumps are installedonto skids to the maximum practicaldegree for pre-fabrication and testing.

The plant control system togetherwith operator station(s) and analyzingequipment are supplied in an air-

conditioned container, ready-cabled andshop-tested with the configuration of theDCS completed.

A separate shop-assembled container issupplied for all electrical medium voltageswitch gears, step-down transformers andlow-voltage switch-gears including VFDsfor pumps and other electrical equipment.

All above mentioned plant modules andskids are equipped with remote I/Omodules for easy bus connection.

This high degree of prefabrication andtesting results in short erection periods

    with minimized start-up times.
