The Kraft FileEnteringthe2007season,GregKraft’sArizonaStateUniver-

sitytrackandfieldprogramwilllooktocontinuetoexcelasithasunderhisdirection.InhistimewiththeSunDevils,the11th-yearheadcoachhasbroughttheprogramsupinprominencebyaddingsoliddepthandcreatinganall-aroundproductthatwillcontinuetoshineforyearstocome.

In recent years, Kraft’s teams, especially on the women’sscene,havedevelopedintonationalpowers.TheSunDevilwomencapturedthe2006Pac-10ChampionshipwhilealsobecomingjustthesecondprograminthehistoryoftheNCAAtoearnatrophyateachofthethreeNCAAeventsinthesameacademicyear(fourthin2005crosscountry,thirdindoorsandtiedforfourthoutdoors).Forhisefforts,Kraftwasselectedas the2006USTFCCCAWomen’sWestDistrictCoachof theYearandthe2006Pac-10ConferenceWomen’sCoachoftheYear,hissecondconferencecoachinghonor(1996SECCoachoftheYear).

Individuallyin2006,KraftsawJacquelynJohnsonsweepthenationaltitlesinthemulti-events,winningtheindoorpentathlonandtheoutdoorheptathlon.Indoors,AmyHastingswon the 5,000m national crown before teammate Victoria Jackson secured the outdoor10,000mtitle.Alltold,15All-Americaaccoladeswereattainedduringtheyear.

ThemenalsohaveenjoyedsuccessduringKraft’stimeinTempe,includingAaronAguayo,ASU’sdistancestandout.Aguayo,whofinishedninthinthenationatthe2006NCAACrossCountryChampionships,will lookforhis fourthPac-10steeplechasetitlethisyear.KraftalsohashelpedwiththeeffortsputforthbyJoshuaKinnaman,atwo-timeAll-Americaninthemulti-eventsduringthe2006season.

Kraft’sinfluenceonthesuccessoftheprogramalsowashonoredastwoofhisassistantsearnedrecognitionin2006.DavidDumble(women’sthrows)andLouisQuintana(women’sdistances)werebothselectedastheUSTFCCCAWestDistrictAssistantCoachoftheYearbeforebeingtabbedastheUSTFCCCANationalAssistantCoachoftheYearfortheirrespec-tiveareas.

Duringhistenure,Kraft’sstudent-athleteshavecombinedtocollect75individualAll-Americahonors,14relayAll-AmericahonorsandfiveNCAAChampionships.Regionally,seven individualandeightrelaycrownshavebeenearnedwiththePac-10Championshipshavingseen39individualeventsandeightrelayscapturedbySunDevilathletes.

Academically,theprogramhasbeenequallyimpressivewithSunDevilathletescomb-ingtoearn116selectionstothePac-10AcademicFirstandSecondteamsincrosscountryandtrack&field.Attheendofthe2006season,JacksonwasselectedastheUSTFCCCAWomen’sOutdoorStudent-AthleteoftheYearwhile13SunDevilsearnednationalacademicrecognitionfromtheUSTFCCCAaswell.

The2005calendaryearwasanotherbannercampaignfortheSunDevilsasthreewomenandeightmenattainedindividualAll-Americahonorswhileonemen’srelayalsoearnedthenationalaccolade.Thewomen’scrosscountryteamfinishedfourthtoearnthefirsttrophyfinish in the history of the program while Hastings became the first harrier to earn All-Americahonorsthreetimesinacareer.

The2004seasonsawmanygreataccomplishments,butnonemoreimpressivethanthevictoriesrecordedbyonecurrentandoneformerstudent-athlete. InJune,KraftcoachedtruefreshmanJohnsontotheNCAAHeptathlontitle,thefirstnationaltitlewonbyatrackandfieldathletesince1996.Twomonthslater,formerSunDevilstandoutDwightPhillipstraveledtoAthens,Greece,whereheclaimedOlympicgoldfortheUnitedStates.

Severalofthemoresuccessfulstudent-athletesinthehistoryoftheprogramhaveaccu-mulatednumerousAll-AmericahonorsunderKraft.Thoseathletes,whichwererecruitedbyKraftandhisstaff,includethelikesofMarcusBrunson(seven),TonyBerrian(six)andPhillips(five)forthemenandwomen’sathletesTiffanyGreer(eight),LisaAguilera(six)andKellyMacDonald(four).RecentgraduateSethAmoocappedhiscareerwitheighthonorswhilecurrentrunnerHastingshastotaledseveninhercareer.

Kraft’sathleteshavefaredwellinternationallyaswell.PriortoPhillipsclaiminggoldinthe2004Games,hewonthe2003indoorandoutdoorWorldChampionshipsandalsofin-ishedeighthatthe2000OlympicsinSydney.Inthesummerof2006,SarahStevensandcur-rentredshirtfreshmanRyanWhitingrepresentedtheUnitedStatesatthePan-AmGameswithbothwinning the shotput competitionwhileWhiting, the2005GatoradeNationalHighSchoolTrack&FieldAthleteoftheYear,alsowonthediscus.

SincehisfirstPac-10ChampionshipmeetatthehelmoftheSunDevilprogramin1996,numeroustitleshavebeenbroughtbacktoTempewhilebothteamshavebeenverycompeti-tiveintheoverallstandings.ThewomenhavefinishedintheTop4ineachofthepastfiveseasonswhiletheirmalecounterpartshavedonesoinfiveofthelastsevenseasons.Inthatsamestretch,themenscored100pointsormorefivetimes.Themen’srelayshaveenjoyedremarkablesuccessduringtheKraftyearsasthe4x400mrelaytitleresidedinTempeforfiveyearsinarow(2001-05)whilethe4x100mrelayattainedgoldin2005aswell.

Student-athletes have become multiple champions under Kraft, including the confer-ence’s first three-time long jump champion in Greer, two-time steeplechase winner LisaAguilera,two-time5,000mrunchampionMacDonaldandtwo-timehighjumpchampionFionaDalywhileJohnsonwonboththehighjumpandheptathlonin2004beforeaddingthe2006heptathloncrown.Forthemen,MarcusBrunsonwonthe100mand200minthesameyearwhilePhillipstookhometwolongjumpcrownsandAguayoisthethree-timedefending3,000msteeplechasechampion.

Afterspendinghis first twoyearsatASUrebuildingtheprogramoneeventatatime,constructingafoundationthatfocusedonrecruitingthehighschoolranks,therecentseasonshaveshownKraft’scontinuedbreakthroughs.Inthatspanoftime,themen’steamscoredover100pointsfivetimesandthefirsttimesince1981whilethewomenbrokethecenturymarkforjustthethirdtimeever,amassingaschool-record154pointsonitswaytowinningthePac-10.

Sincethe1999indoorandoutdoorseasons,themenandwomenhavecombinedtomakenumerousadditionstotheSunDevilrecordbook.Bothteamshavecombinedtorecord53schoolrecords,including12duringthe2006season.In2005,twoofthoseoutdoormarksbetteredmucholdermarks, including the4x100mrelayofStevenKoehneman,Domenik

Peterson,SethAmooandKel-vin Love Jr., broke the 1979markof38.79withtheirrunof38.71andJessicaPressley’sshot put mark beating outLeslie Deniz’ throw from1983. The shot put mark isnowownedbySarahStevens.

The 2004 season wasfilledwithAll-Americanper-formances,with11SunDev-ils combining for 11 nationalaccolades. On the women’sside, Johnson led the chargeasshecollectedhonorsforhernational title in the outdoorheptathlonandrunner-upfin-ish in the indoor pentathlon.Banda, Barton and Petersoneach collected four honorseach.

Themenfinishedthird inthe Pac-10 Championships(120points)whilethewomencapturedfourth(97)toagainfinish among the top tier ofthe conference standings.Themen’s4x400mrelaywasvictoriousforthefourthyearinarowwhileBanda(400m),Johnson(highjump/heptath-lon), Aguayo and Hastings(3,000m steeplechase) allrecordedindividualcrownsatthemeet.

At the NCAA OutdoorChampionship meet, thewomenfinishedtiedfor20thwith12pointswhilethemenscored22pointsandatiefor10thplacetorecordthebestfinishunderKraft.Thecrosscountryteampostedtwosol-id performances at nationalswiththemensettingaschoolrecordforfinish(8th)andlowpoints(315)whilethewomenadvancedtothenationalmeetfor the seventhyear ina rowafterhavingnevermakingthenationalfieldinthehistoryoftheprogram.

In2003,themen,follow-ingthreeyearsof100-pointsormoreatthePac-10Cham-pionships, slipped below themark while the women registered a school-record 109 points. Cassandra Reed (400m),Banda(400m),themen’s4x400mrelay,Aguilera(3,000msteeplechase),Greer(longjump)andSandraOrsund(discus)eachwontitles.

In2002,thetrackteamagainshined.ThewomensawGreerandAguileragarnerAll-AmericahonorsinbothindoorandoutdoorafterwinningthePac-10Championshipinthelongjumpand3,000msteeplechase,respectively.Forthemen,the4x400mrelayteamofLorenzoParham,SteveFitch,PeteLopezandSethAmoowonthePac-10ChampionshipandalsowereAll-Americansintheoutdoorevent.Indoors,DavidWood(shotput)andTrevellQuinley(longjump)wereAll-Americans.

Alsoin2002,theharrierwomen,ledbyastronggroupoffirstorsecondyearathletes,advancedtotheNCAAChampionshipswheretheyplacedtiedfor23rd.JessicaScalzoearnedPac-10NewcomeroftheYearhonorswhilehelpingguidetheteamtotheNCAAChampion-ships.Forthemen,FasilBizunehandJ.J.Dukeadvancedtothenationalmeetasindividualstogivethemenapresenceatthechampionships.

The2001seasonsawtheASUmenrecordtheirhighestnationalfinish(tiedfor15th)sincethe1981squadplacedfourth.Themenalsorackedup109.5pointsatthePac-10Champion-ships,theirsecond-highestpointtotalsincethesame‘81squadtookhometheconferencecrownwith133.UnderKraft’sguidanceand103pointsearnedbythemen’steamlastyear,ASUhashadthreeyearsinarowwitha100-pointfinishatthePac-10Championships.Priortohisarrival,theteamhadonlyoncebrokenthe100-pointplateau.

Onthewomen’sside,ASUearneditsbestnationalfinish(tiedfor14th)since1994whenthesquadtook10th.In2001,bothmen’sandwomen’scrosscountryteamsmadeappear-ancesattheNCAAChampionships,withthemensettingaschoolrecordwithasecond-placeteamfinishatthePac-10Championships,whichASUhosted.

KellyMacDonaldwasthedrivingforcebehindthewomen’ssuccessin2001.MacDonaldearnedAll-AmericahonorsandwonPac-10titlesintwoevents,the3000msteeplechaseandthe5000m.TiffanyGreeralsoassistedthewomen’scause,placingthirdattheNCAACham-

Upongraduatingfromtheprogram,Brunsonwongoldin the 100m at the World University Games, while Mac-Donaldcapturedthirdplaceinthe3000msteeplechaseattheUSAChampionships.

Duringthe2000 indoorseason,theASUmentiedfor10thandthewomenplaced23rdattheNCAAChampion-ships.Thewomenbrokefiveschoolrecords,morethananyotheryearsince1991whentheybrokefour,whilethemensnappedthreeASUstandards. Ontheoutdoortrack,thementiedfor17thattheNCAAChampionships,whilethewomentiedfor38th.

At the 2000 Pac-10 Championships, the men’s squadtook home the highest finish since 1983, a third-placestanding, while the women placed fifth, the first top-fivefinishsince1995.In40yearsofcompetition,DwightPhil-lips becameonly the seventhman to repeat as thePac-10long-jumpchampion. Also takinghome conference titleswereJeremyRasmussen(3,000msteeplechase),themen’s4x100mrelayteam,KellyMacDonald(5,000m),andGreer(longjump).

Duringthe1999indoorseason,ASU’smenfinished11thandthewomentiedfor32ndattheNCAAChampionships.Marcus Brunson (60 meters) and Dwight Phillips (longjump) were NCAA runners-up after Brunson had brokenthecollegiaterecordinthe60metersearlierintheyear.Sixindoorschoolrecordswerebroken.TheoutdoorseasonsawthreeschoolrecordseclipsedasthemenfinishedfifthinthePac-10—just0.5pointsoutoffourthplace—and18thattheNCAAChampionships.PhillipscapturedboththelongjumpandtriplejumpPac-10titlesandFionaDalyrecordedhersecondstraightwomen’shighjumpconferencecrown.

KraftwasintroducedasASU’sheadcoachJuly28,1996,after spending sevenyearsguiding the trackand fieldandcross country programs at the University of South Caro-linawherehewasthe1996SECCoachoftheYear.DuringKraft’stenureatSouthCarolina,herebuiltthemen’spro-gramintoaleaguepowerandconstructedthewomen’spro-gramfromscratch.Kraftalsoheadedupthemen’sprogramtransitionfromtheMetroConferencetotheSoutheasternConference.

TheresultofKraft’sworkwasbothquickandremark-able. The Gamecock men’s squad took just three years toclimb from22points and a10th-place finish to74pointsand a fourth-place finish at the12-teamconferencemeet.ThethreeteamsaheadofSouthCarolinawererecentNCAAchampions Arkansas, Tennessee and LSU. South CarolinahadconsecutiveNCAAtop20finishes.

Onthewomen’sside,theSouthCarolinaclimbwasasimpressive as it was quick. In four years, the Gamecockwomen went from a basic walk-on program that finished10th in the SEC (13 points) to a second-place finish (103points)behindeventualnationalchampionLSU.TheUSCwomenthenwentontoscore26pointsattheNCAAOut-doorChampionshipstotieUCLAforninthplace.AndtheGamecocks were to return 102 of their 103 conferencepoints, plus all 26of theirNCAApoints.Whatmade the

building of the women’s program even more astoundingwas South Carolina had yet to be funded to the NCAAscholarshiplimits.

“WeareextremelyexcitedtowelcomeGregtotheASUfamily,”then-ASUAthleticDirectorDr.KevinWhitesaidat thetimehe introducedKraft. “HebuiltSouthCarolinaintooneofthenation’stoptrack&fieldprogramsvirtuallyfrom scratch. He is also nationally regarded as a coach ofremarkableclassand integrity,which ispreciselywhatwewerelookingforatArizonaState.”

Kraft,who isnowenteringhis27thyearofDivision Icoachingand18thasaheadcoach,haslongbeenassociatedwithsuccessfultrackandfieldandcrosscountryprograms.Asanassistant,Krafttutored26All-Americansand36indi-vidualconferencechampionswhilehelpingguidehisschoolstofourconferencetitlesandthreeNCAATop10finishes.

Hestartedhiscoachingcareerin1979asagraduateas-sistantcoachathisalmamater,CalPoly-SanLuisObispo.DuringKraft’sone-yearstintatCalPoly,theMustangswontheNCAADivisionIIchampionshipinbothtrackandfieldandcrosscountry.Kraft’snextstopwasaone-yearstintasthefieldeventscoachatIndianaStateUniversity.

In1981,hemovedontoahighlysuccessfulstintasanassistantatKansasStateUniversity.DuringhisfouryearsatKSU,Krafttutored14BigEightchampionsand16NCAAAll-Americans.OneoftheWildcatpupilswas1996Olym-pictriplejumpchampionKennyHarrison.DuringhisstintinManhattan,KSUwonaBigEightchampionshipincrosscountryandpostedtwotop-10NCAAfinishesintrack,aswellasfourothertop-20finishes.

KraftthenheadedtotheUniversityofVirginiain1985,where his initial responsibilities included all field events.His dutieswere later expanded to include the sprints andhurdles. During his four-year stint in Charlottesville, hisstudent-athleteswon20 individualAtlanticCoastConfer-encetitlesandearnedsevenAll-Americahonorswhilecap-turingthreeACCteamchampionships.

withseveralAll-Americaperformancesandschoolrecords.Inthefiveyearshehasoverseenthethrowers,the2006USTFCCCANationalandWestDistrictWomen’sThrowsCoachoftheYearhasbroughthisstudent-athletestothetopoftheconferenceandnationalscene.Allofthatsuccess,combinedwiththetoprecruitsDumblehasbroughttoTempe,makeshisgrouponeofthemoreexcitingcomponentsoftheprogram.

PriortoDumble’sarrival,thewomen’sthrowshadproducedoneindoorAll-Americanand13outdoorAll-Americans(includingmulti-eventathletes).Lastyearalone,DumblesawSarahStevens,thePac-10ShotPutChampion,earnnationalacclaimintheshotput(indoorandoutdoor),helpedJacquelynJohnsonwinnationaltitlesintheindoorpentathlonandout-doorheptathlonandcoachedJessicaPressleytoatwo-All-Americaperformanceoutdoors(shotput&discus)afterearningAll-Americahonorsindoorsintheweighttoss.Stevens’shotputhonorswerejustthesecondandthirdtimes,respectively,thatanASUwomanhadearnedAll-Americahonorsintheshotputinprogramhistory.

Duringtheindoorseason,DumblewitnessedStevenssettheschoolrecordandthethird-bestmarkinthehistoryofthePac-10ConferencewhensheplacedthirdattheNCAACham-pionshipswithatossof17.91m(58-9.25).Earlierintheyear,Pressleysettheschoolstandardintheweighttossat21.39m(70-2.25).Stevensalsotookovertherecordsintheoutdoorshotput(17.46m/57-3.50)andthehammer(65.69m/215-6).

Alltold,DumblehasworkedwithfivedifferentSunDevilsthathavecollected13All-Americaawards.Intherecordbooks,Dumble’sathleteshavedonetheirfairshareofrewritesoftheyearsashiswomenholdfouroftheTop5marks inthe indoorshotputandindoorweight tosswhile themenoccupy twoof theTop5 ineachevent.Outdoors, thewomenhavefiveoftheTop10shotputanddiscusmarks,sevenofthehammermarksandthreeofthetopjavelinmarks.Onthemen’sside,Dumble’sthrowershaverecordedsixmarksontheoutdoorTop10lists.

Thecontinuedadditionoftoprecruits, includingRyanWhiting,willhelptheriseoftheprogram.WhitingandStevenscombinedtosecureatotaloffivegoldmedalsinjunior(19-and-under)competitionswiththreeofthemedalsearnedininternationalcompetition.Stevens,whoredshirtedin2005,wontheshotputcompetitionattheUSATFOutdoorJuniorChampionshipsbeforetakinggoldatthePan-AmericanGamesinthesameevent.Whiting,the2005GatoradeNationalTrackandFieldHighSchoolAthleteoftheYearthatredshirtedin2006,alsowontheshotputatbotheventswhilealsoaddinggoldinthediscusatthePan-Ammeetwithameetrecordof61.40m.

Dumblehasnotlimitedhisinstructiontocurrentcollegiatestudent-athletesashecurrentlyisworkingwithJohnGodina,athree-timeOlympian.WithDumble’scoaching,Godina,afour-timeWorldChampionandtwo-timeOlympicMedalist,wonthe2005USAIndoorChampion-ships,claiminghisfirstcrownsincethe1998season.Hismarkalsowasapersonalbestthrow,hisfirstinnearlysixyears.Godinaalsoendedthe2005outdoorseasonwiththeTop2shotputmarksintheworld.

PriortocomingtoTempe,DumbleheadedthethrowersatVirginiaTech,wherehewasanassistanttrackandfieldcoachforoneyear.HisappointmentwiththeSunDevils ishissecondcollegiatecoachingposition.

Dumble attended UCLA where he competed under Bruin coach Art Venegas and twiceearned All-America honors in the discus, with third and eighth-place finishes at the NCAAChampionships in1997and1996,respectively.Dumblealsocaptainedthe1997BruinsquadandhisUCLAbesteffortof197-11ranks10thall-timeinschoolhistory.

Hereceivedhisbachelor’sdegreeinenvironmentalstudiesfromUCLAin1997.HeattendedBakersfieldCollegepriortohisstintinWestwood,wherehewasajuniorcollegestatechampioninthediscusandcompetedinallfourthrowingevents,includingthehammerandjavelin.Fol-lowinghistimewiththeBruins,hecompetedforReebokforthreeyearsandcompetedatthe2000OlympicTrialsandtheUSATFChampionshipsontwooccasions.

DionMillerisenteringhisthirdseasonasanassistantcoachwiththeArizonaStateUniversitytrackandfieldprogramandwillonceagainworkwiththewomen’ssprinters,relaysandhurdlers.

Last year, the women turned in strong performances, including picking up valuablepointsattheconferencemeettohelptheSunDevilstotheirfirstPac-10TeamChampion-shipinthehistoryoftheprogram.MillerworkedwithJacquelynJohnson,whopickeduptwomulti-eventNCAAtitlesandAll-Americahonors,aswellasayoungsprintinggroupthatqualifiedfortheNCAAChampionshipsinthe4x400mrelaywhilealsosendingthreeindividualstothenationalmeetinthequarter-mileevents.

LatoshaWallaceadvancedtotheNCAAmeetinthe400mhurdlesafterplacingsecondinthePac-10andWestRegion.Shewasjoinedby400mdashersChristinaHardemanandBridgetteWilliamswho,alongwithShauntelElcock,placed11thintherelayevent.Harde-manwontheindoor400mdashattheMPSFChampionshipsbeforemovingoutdoorswheresheplacedfourthintheconferencebeforetakingsecondintheWest.

Ontherecordlists,MillerhelpedJohnsonclockan8.34inthe100mhurdlestomoveintothirdall-timeindoorswhileWallaceranthefifth-fastestindoor400mtimeof53.69.Outdoors, the duo again made a mark in the books with Johnson ranking fourth in the100mhurdles(13.31)andWallaceinthe400mhurdles(57.57),oneofonlyeightSunDevilwomentorunasub-60timeintheevent.

DuringhisfirstseasonwiththeSunDevils,Millerledhis4x400mrelayteamtoaPac-10titlewithPorcheaCarroll,Hardeman,CassandraReedandKandaceTucker running therace.TherelaycrownwasthefirstwonbytheSunDevilssincethe1995meetwhenASUcapturedthe4x400mraceandjusttheseventhtimeoverallsincetheSunDevilsjoinedtheconferencein1987.

Individually,Miller coachedCarroll to a successful senior season that sawher tie theschoolrecordinthe60mdash(7.39)beforebecomingthefirstSunDeviltocracktheTop8ontheall-timeASU100mdashlistinsevenyearswhensheclockedthefourth-fastesttimeof11.44.Carroll,alongwithhelpingtherelayteamwinconferencegold,finishedsecondinthePac-10at200mandthirdat100min2005.Addinginherthird-placeinthelongjumpandCarrollwasthetopperformerforASUatthePac-10Championships.

Inhis twoseasonswithUW,Millerbrought inabevyofgreattalent, includingthreeprepAll-Americansandnumerous juniorcollege transfers. In2003,MillerguidedsevensprinterstoTop10marksontheall-timeUWlists.Lastyear,MillerbolsteredtheHuskyhurdlerswithAshleyLodree.ThefreshmanwouldgoontobreakallthefreshmanschoolrecordsandwasrankedamongtheTop5junior-agehurdlersintheworld.Milleralsoputtogetherasolidmen’s4x400mrelaythatadvancedtotheNCAAChampionshipsforthefirsttimesince1998.

PriortoUW,MillerbuiltTexasTech’ssprintersintooneofthepremiergroupsinthenation.Inthe2002season,heguidedstudent-athletesto13All-Americahonorswhilethemen’s4x100mrelayteamcaptureditsfirstBigXIIchampionshiptitle.Thatsamerecruitclass,ledbyJonathonJohnson,wasrankedashighasNo.4inthenationandwasconsideredthebestintheBigXIIConference.

In2001,thewomenshinedbothindoorsandoutdoorsunderMillerassevenschoolre-cordswereset.Indoors,TamiZacharyestablishedthemarkinthe60mdash(7.43)whileNgoziIwubecamethefirstTTUfemaletobreakthe54-secondbarrier,clockingaschoolrecord53.67inthe400m.Miller's4x400mrelayteamalsosetthemarkat3:40.11beforetheyrewrotetherecordoneyearlaterat3:36.97toearnAll-AmericahonorsbyfinishingeighthattheNCAAChampionships.ReggieHillalsoturnedinseveralsolidperformancesforthemen,includingaschool-best6.66inthe60m.

On the outdoor track, true freshman Tiffany Green won the conference titles in the100mand200m(schoolrecord22.98)andhelpedthe4x100mrelaytothirdplaceandaschoolrecordat44.35.

HisfinalseasonwiththeRedRaiderssawapairofrecord-setterscompeteunderMiller,includingLicretiaSibley,justthesecondwomeninprogramhistorytomultipleAll-Americahonorsinoneseason.Shefinishedseventhinthe400m(54.26)andwasamemberoftherecord4x400mrelaythatfinishedeighth.Onthemen'sside,MillerguidedJohnsontohisimpressiverookiecampaigninwhichhebecamethefirstTTUfreshmantoclaimmultipleAll-Americahonorsinaseason.

Millerearnedhisdegree inexercise science fromTTUin1998wherehewasanAll-American.Healsocaptured13all-conferencehonorsfortheRedRaiders.Aneight-timeNCAAqualifierforTTU,MilleralsoqualifiedfortheUSOlympicTeamTrialsin1996inboththe100mand200mevents.

Arizona State University’s distance program is one of thestrongestup-and-comingprogramsinthenationandleadingtheway is fifth-year head cross country coach and assistant track& field coach Louie Quintana, the 2006 USTFCCCA NationalAssistantTrack&FieldCoachoftheYearforWomen’sDistances.NotonlyhavetheSunDevildistancerunnersmadeanameforthemselves in recent years with their individual success under

Quintana’sguidance,thegroupasawholehasmadea large impact inbringingtheSunDevilcrosscountryandtrack&fieldprogramtothetopofthenationalstandings.

Thewomen,inparticular,haveexperiencedgreatsuccessunderQuintana.Thispastfall, the women advanced to their ninth-consecutive NCAA Championships, the sixth-longestactivestreakinthenation,wheretheyoungSunDevilsplaced13thoverall.Oneyearbeforethat,theharriersfinishedfourthinthenationbeforehelpingtheindoorandoutdoortrack&fieldteamstothirdandfourth-placefinishes,respectively,attheNCAAChampionships,markingjustthesecondtimeinNCAAhistorythatawomen’sprogramhadearnedatrophy(Top4)inallthreemeetsinthesameacademicyear.

His 2006 women placed second in the conference and third regionally to make thenationalmeetwithtworookiesscoringintheTop5atthenationalrace(AliKilety68thandKariHardt88th).ThesametwofreshmanalsoearneddistinctionaswellwithKieltybeingselectedasthe2006Pac-10NewcomeroftheYearasthetopfreshmanfinisherattheconferenceracewhileHardt,comingoffamonth-longlayoff,placedasthetoptruefreshman in the meet.Away from team competition, Hastings competed unattached attheUSATFClubCrossCountryChampionshipsinSanFranciscoandwonthemeet,hersecondnationaltitleof2006.

QuintanaalsoguidedasuccessfulseniorcampaignforAaronAguayoastheteam’stopmalerunnerplacedninthoverallattheNCAAChampionshipstonotonlyearnhissecondAll-Americahonor,butalsoplacethehighestofanymaleinschoolhistoryatthenationalmeet and the secondhighest in thehistoryof theprogrambehindLisaAguilera’s fifth-placeshowingatthe2000event.HewillnowlooktohelpQuintanamakehistoryonthetrackasavictoryinthe3,000msteeplechaseatthePac-10ChampionshipsforAguayowillmakehimjustthesixthmaleinPac-10historytowinthesameeventfourtimes.

On the track, thewomenagainexcelled asAmyHastings captured the5,000mruncrown at the NCAA Indoor Championships whileVictoria Jackson and Jenna KingmaattainedAll-Americahonors inthe5,000mand3,000mruns,respectively.Fromthere,thedistancecorpsplayedavital role in twoof theoutdoorchampionshipmeetsas thewomen’sdistancescollected71oftheteam’s154pointsenroutetowinningtheprogramsfirstPac-10teamtitlebeforehelpingtheteamfinishfourthnationally.

ThePac-10meetsawthewomen’sdistancescapturethreetitleswithHastingswinningat10,000m,Jacksonsecuringthe5,000mtitleandBrookeBennettwinningthe3,000msteeplechase to giveASU a victory in the steeple event in each of the six years it hasbeencontested.Inall,thewomencombinedtoscore23pointsinboththe5,000mand10,000meventswhileaddinganother22inthesteeple.

ThemenalsofaredwellattheconferencelevelwithAguayowinninghisthirdsteeple-chasecrown in a row,makinghim just the secondman inPac-10history to three-peatwhile teammate RyanWarrenburg placed second in the event.The duo also ran the5,000m,finishingfifthandfourth,respectively.

After their success inEugene, theSunDevils took their showtoSacramentowhereJacksonwonthe10,000mnationaltitlewithHastingsplacingfourth.Theduo,alongwithKingma,earnedAll-Americahonors.On themen’s side,AguayoandWarrenburgcom-petedinthesteeplechaseandfinishedthirdand10th,respectively,toattainAll-Americahonorsintheeventforthesecondyearinarow.

But the national success did not stop in Sacramento. At the USATrack & FieldChampionships in Indianapolis, Jackson was the top collegiate finisher in the 10,000mrun,takingfifthplace,whileLisaGalaviz(Aguilera)wonthe3,000msteeplechasetitle.Alltold,Quintana’srunnersaccumulatedthreenationaltitles,nineAll-AmericaaccoladesandfourPac-10titlesduringthe2005-06academicyear.

Academically, his runners also proved to be some of the best in the nation as fivewomen and three men earned Academic All-USTFCCCA honors, including Jackson

beingnamedthe2006FemaleScholarAthleteoftheYearforoutdoortrack.Alltold,thedistancerunnerscombinedfor34AcademicPac-10honors(17incrosscountryand17intrack)andsixESPNTheMagazineAcademicAll-RegionVIIIaccolades(threeeachincrosscountryandtrack).

Quintana’s 2005 cross country squads shined brightly again as his women finishedsecond in both the Pac-10 Championships and the NCAAWest Region before earningtheprogram’sfirsttrophywithafourth-placeshowingatnationals.Hastingsbecamethemostdecoratedharrierinprogramhistoryastherecordholderforwinsinacareer(five)earnedherthirdAll-Americaawardafterfinishing13th.

The men, battling through injuries and without the services of 2004All-AmericanAaronAguayo,bouncedback froma fifth-place showing at the conference level beforeplacingthirdattheregionalmeet.Selectedasanat-largeteamfortheNCAAmeet,themenplaced17thoverallinjusttheirfourthappearanceandaprogram-bestsecondNCAAChampionshipappearanceinarow.

In 2004, his first season as a head coach, both teams shined as each placed secondat the Pac-10 Championships before each took runner-up honors at the NCAAWestRegion Championships. All four team scores are program-record lows at each meet.Individually,QuintanaguidedHastingstothe2004Pac-10CrossCountryChampionshipwhilecoaching severalothers to titles andAll-Americahonors incrosscountryandonthetrack.Hastingswontworacesontheseason,butherconferencecrownwashistoricas shebecamethe firstSunDevil (maleor female) towinthePac-10run.Hastings,aswellasmalecounterpartAguayo,wouldgoontofinish22ndatthenationalmeettoattainAll-Americahonors.

Onthetrack,HastingsearnedhersecondAll-Americahonoroftheyearassheplacedfifth at 5,000m indoors. Outdoors, the distance corps shined once again withAguayoand RyanWarrenburg earningAll-America honors in track for the first time (3,000msteeplechase).Attheconferencelevel,theSunDevilwomenmaintainedtheirdominanceinthesteepleeventasAnnaMasinelligaveASUitsfifthtitleinasmanyyearswhileAguayorepeatedatthesamedistanceforthemen.

Leadinguptohishireastheheadcoachoftheharriers,QuintanaservedinseveralcapacitieswiththeSunDevils,startinghistimeinTempeastheprogram’sgraduateassis-tantcoachinJanuary2002.Followingtwotrackandfieldseasonsandonecrosscountry,QuintanawaspromotedtoassistantcoachforbothprogramsinAugust2003andalsowaschargedwithcoordinatingtheprograms’recruiting.

In his time as an assistant coach, Quintana helped tutor student-athletes to greatsuccess. Inthe2003crosscountryseason,hehelpedHastingsandDesireeDavilamakehistoryasbothrunnersearnedAll-Americahonors,markingthefirsttimeASUhashadtwoAll-Americansinoneseasononthecrosscountrycourse.HealsocoachedHastingsto two individualwinson theyearas sheearnedAll-Pac-10FirstTeamandNCAAAll-WestRegionhonors.Thewomen’steamfinishedsecondintheconferenceforthesecondyearinarowandadvancedtotheirsixthNCAAChampionshipmeetinarowwheretheyplaced14thoverall.

Onthetrackin2004,thedistancerunnersagainturnedinseveralperformancesunderQuintana’swatchfuleyesasbothHastingsandAguayocapturedthe3,000msteeplechasetitles at thePac-10ChampionshipswithAguayogoingon towin the regional crownaswell.Indoors,HastingsearnedAll-Americahonorsinthe5,000mrunwhilealsosettingtheschoolrecordintheevent.

Asthegraduateassistant,Quintanahadahandinguidingthewomen’scrosscountryteamtotheirfifthNCAAappearanceinarow.Thewomenalsofinishedsecondatboththe2002NCAAWestRegionandPac-10Championshipmeetswhileestablishingschoolrecordsatbothracesforthelowestpointtotal.The2002men’ssquadfinishedthirdattheconferencemeetandqualifiedtwoindividuals,J.J.DukeandFasilBizuneh,fortheNCAAChampionshipsinTerreHaute,Ind.QuintanaalsospenttimetutoringHastingstoaWorldCrossCountryJuniorChampionshipberthinLausanne,Switzerland,whereshewasthetopAmericanfinisher(20thplace).

DuringhiscompetitivecareeratVillanovaUniversity,hecaptainedtheWildcatsquadto a pair ofTop 10 finishes, placing fourth in 1992 and ninth in 1994 at the NCAAChampionships. Individually, he claimed three NCAA Cross CountryAll-America cer-

tificates with finishes of 16th, 14th, and 4th. Quintanaalso qualified for four indoor and outdoor NCAATrackand Field Championships as well as the 1992 USAOlympicTrials.In1993,hewasnamedMaleOutstandingPerformer at the prestigious Penn Relays and, for hisefforts, made the cover of the July 1993 issue of TrackandFieldNews.

Inall,QuintanagarnerednineAll-Americaawardsdur-inghiscareerontheMainLine.Heearnedhisbachelor’sdegree in History fromVU in 1996 and recently com-pleted his Master’s degree in Education Curriculum andInstruction with a major in Language and Literacy fromASU.Astandoutrunner inhighschool,hewas the1990NationalFootlockerCrossCountryChampion.

TerryWinstonreturnsforhisthirdseasonoverseeingthemen’ssprint-ers,relaysandhurdlesatArizonaStateUniversityandwilllooktoguidethemenbacktothetopofthepodiumatboththeconferenceandna-

tionallevelin2006.Alreadyinhistenure,All-AmericahonorshavebeenattainedbyseveralSunDevilswhile4x100mrelaybrokea26-yearoldschoolrecord(2005)andthe4x400mrelaynearlybrokethreeminutes(2005).

Duringthe2006campaign,WinstonworkedwithtwoathletesthatadvancedtotheNCAAOutdoorChampionshipswithmulti-eventspecialistJoshuaKinnamanearningAll-Americahonorsafterfinishingsixthatthenationalmeet.Inthesprints,sophomoreKelvinLoveJr.,reboundedfromaneighth-placeshowinginthe200mdashatthePac-10Championshipstofinishfifthintheregionbeforetaking17thattheNCAAmeet.

WinstonalsoworkedtoimprovethehurdleeventsandsawresultsduringtheindoorseasonasbothMarquisProfitandKinnamanplacedtheirnamesontheASUall-timeTop5listinthe60mhurdles.Profitclockedatimeof8.17whileKinnamanpostedan8.37,rankingthemthirdandfifth,respectively.KinnamanusedthatmarktowintheMPSFChampionshipheptathlontitlebeforegoingtofinisheighthattheNCAAChampionshipsandearnhisfirstAll-Americahonorintheevent.

Inhis firstNCAAOutdoorTrackandFieldChampionships(2005),Winston’smenfin-ishedsecondinthe4x400mrelayasthequartetofRichAllen,SethAmoo,LewisBandaandDomenikPetersonclockeda3:00.57inthefinalsofthemeet,beingedgedbyLSU.Atthesamemeet,healsosawAmoofinishsixthinthe200mdashtoearnAll-Americahonors,mak-inghimjusttheseventhSunDevilinschoolhistoryandjustthesecondsince1981tofinishamongtheTop8.Indoors,hecoachedPetersontoafourth-placefinishat200minaschool-recordtimeof20.43.

On theoutdoor track,his teamof StevenKoehnemann,Amoo,Peterson andLove Jr.,turnedinthefastest4x100mrelaytimeinschoolhistoryat38.71,breakingthe26-year-oldrecordof38.78(theoldmarkwassetin1979byRonBrown,LaMonteKing,GregMooreandDwayneEvans).Thesamefourmenalsocapturedthe4x100mtitleatthePac-10Cham-pionshipsbeforewinningthesameraceattheNCAAWestChampionships.Followingtheirrecord,therelaywasselectedasthePac-10Co-AthletesoftheWeek(May2)markingthefirsttimeinconferencehistoryarelaywashonoredwiththeweeklyaward.

Winstonhelpedcontinue the long-standing traditionof success in the4x400mrelay attheconferencelevelasAmoo,Banda,JasonBartonandPetersonwonthePac-10title.TheirvictorygaveASUtheeventcrownforthefifthyearinarowandhelpedtheSunDevilssweeptherelaysforthesecondyearinarow.Withthevictoriesintherelayevents,Winstonhasnowcoachedaconferencechampioninfourofthelastsixseasons.WinstonalsocoachedhisfirstindividualPac-10championwithAmoowinningthe200m.

PriortohishireinTempe,Winston,whohelpedhisschool'swinfiveconferenceteamtitlesinhisfirstsixyearsofcoaching,oversawthemen’sandwomen’ssprinters,hurdlersandjump-ersfortheHokiesofVirginiaTech.Duringhistenure,threeindividualBigEastchampionshiptitleswerewon,includingJasonFluddinthetriplejumpin2004.Winstonalsomentoredhisstudent-athletestosevenschoolindoorandoutdoorrecords.

Outsidethecollegiateranks,WinstonalsoguidedapairofhurdlerstoTop5finishesatthe2002U.S.Championships,includingBrandiSmith,thefourth-placefinisherinthe400mhurdlesthatyear.Smith’sfinishwasconsideredoneofthebestturnaroundsinhereventafternotqualifyingfortheUSeventoneyearearlier.

BeforeWinstonmadehisway toBlacksburg,Va., he spent four seasonsmentoring themen’sandwomen’s sprinters atSouthwestMissouriState (SMS).During that time(1997-2001),Winstonsawhiswomenbringhomethreeindoorandoneoutdoorconferencecham-pionshipcrownwhilealsosecuringAll-Americahonorsinthe4x400mrelayduringthe1999campaign.Healsocoachedseveralathletesduringtheoff-seasonasthewomensecuredthreemedalsatthe1999CentralAmericanandCaribbeanChampionships.

PriortohisstayatSMS,WinstonspenttwoseasonswiththeThunderingHerdofMarshall(1996-97),againworkingwithboththemen’sandwomen’steams.InhisfinalseasonwithMU,themenwontheSouthernConferenceChampionshipwithoneofthesprintersbeingRandyMoss,astandoutfortheHerd’sfootballteamaswellasaProBowlselectionfortheNFL’sMinnesotaVikings.

Winston,anativeofAlton,Ill.,competedasastudent-athleteforCoachKraftatSouthCarolina,runningfortheGamecocksfrom1992-94.Inhisfinalcampaign,hefinishedastherunner-up in the indoor55mhurdlesand theoutdoor110mhighhurdlesat the1995SECChampionships.Winston completedhisundergraduate studies at SouthCarolinawhereheearnedaB.S.incriminaljustice.

MuchlikeHeadCrossCountryandAssistantTrack&FieldCoachLouieQuintana, Jeremy Rasmussen has moved up the rungs of the coachingladderatArizonaStateUniversity,enteringthe2006seasonastheteam’s

assistantcoach.Aformerstudent-athleteintheSunDevilprogram,Rasmussenwaseleveatedtohiscurrentpositionafterheservedasagraduateassistanteachof the last twoseasonsandasavolunteercoachduringthe2003-04season.

Inhisnewestrolewiththeprogram,Rasmussenwillcontinuetoworkwiththestudent-ath-letesonthecrosscountryandtrack&fieldrosterswhilealsoassistingwithadministrativedutiesfor theprogram.Healsowill serveas theDirectorofFundraising for theprogramwhichwillincludethe‘DevilsontheTrack’club.

As a member of the staff, Rasmussen has helped the Sun Devil distance program becomeoneof theelite teams in thenation. Inhis timewith theprogram, thewomen’s cross countryteamhas finished second in thePac-10, set the school record for lowpoints at themeet threetimes and finish fourth in thenation (2005).Themen alsohave faredwell,making theNCAAChampionshipfieldinboth2004and2005,thefirsttimetheyhavemadeback-to-backtripstothenationalmeet.

Astarinthesteeplechaseonthetrackasastudent-athlete,Rasmussenhasworkedwithseveralof the top steeplers in the nation over the recent years, includingAaronAguayo, the reigningthree-timechampion,andwomen’schampionsAmyHastings,AnnaMasinelliandBrookeBennett.Prior to the2006cross country season,he alsoworkedwith former teammateLisa (Aguilera)Galavizasshewonthe3,000msteeplechaseatthe2006USATrack&FieldChampionships.

Prior to his coaching and administrative duties, Rasmussen starred for the Sun Devils inbothcrosscountryand trackand field.The2000Pac-10ConferenceChampion in the3,000msteeplechaseandrunner-upinboth2001and2002,Rasmussenhelpedthe2001ASUmenbreakthe100-pointbarrierattheconferencecompetitionforthefirsttimeinprogramhistory.Alsoin2001,RasmussenwasrankedamongtheTop45steeplechaseathletesinthenation,sitting43rdoverall.HenearlybroketheTop50oneyearprior,ranking56thinthenationalstandings.

Incrosscountry,heassistedthemen’steaminmakinghistoryasthe1999squadadvancedtoitsfirstNCAAappearancewhereitplaced14th.Thatsameyear,themenalsosettheschoolrecordforfewestpointsattheregionalmeetandthesecond-besttotalinaPac-10meet.

A native of Minnesota and graduate of Mountain Ridge High School in Glendale, Ariz.,Rasmussen earned his bachelor’s degree in computer information systems fromASU in 2003.CurrentlyworkingtowardhisMaster’sinHigherEducation,RasmussenrecentlyattainedhisUSATrackandFieldLevel2coachingcertificate.

Rhonda Riley returns for her second season with theArizona StateUniversitycrosscountryand track& fieldprogramsandher first seasonas itsdirectorofoperationsafter servingoneyearasagraduateassistant

coach.Inhernewrole,Rileywillmanagethedailyoperationsoftheprogramanditsadministra-tivedutieswhilealsoassistingthestaffwithvariousprojects,suchasalumnirelations.

Riley,whocametoTempefromPac-10ConferencerivalOregonStatewhereshecompletedherundergraduatedegreeandservedoneyearasavolunteerassistantcoach,hadahandinoneofthemostsuccessfulseasonsinSunDevilhistory.ThedistancerunnersplayedanintegralpartinASUbecomingjustthesecondwomen’sprogramall-timetoearna‘triplecrown’byfinishingfourthorbetterinthenationalcrosscountry,indoortrack&fieldandoutdoortrack&fieldmeetsinthesameacademicyear.Theharriersfinishedfourthbeforetheindoorteamplacedthird.ThewomenclosedtheseasonbyplacingfourthattheNCAAOutdoorChampionshipsfollowingtheprogram’sfirstPac-10Championshipteamcrown.

Duringheryearasagraduateassistantcoach,Rileytrainedwithseveralrunnersthatpostedimpressive campaigns, including Amy Hastings, who earned her third All-America honor incross country before winning the NCAA Indoor 5,000m national title. She also worked withNCAAOutdoorNational10,000mChampionVictoriaJacksonandPac-103,000mSteeplechaseChampionBrookeBennettamongothers.

Riley’s first coachingposition in thecollegiate rankswasveryeventful as sheassistedHeadCoachKellySullivaninmentoringthefirstBeavercrosscountryandtrackandfieldteamssincethe University dropped the sports following the 1987-88 academic year. In the cross countryprogram’sfirstyearback,OSUplaced10thatthePac-10Championshipsand16thinthe28-teamfieldattheNCAAWestRegionmeet.

Prior to serving as a volunteer assistant with the Beavers, Riley spent two years coachingbothcrosscountryandtrackandfieldatCorvallisHighSchool.Anactiverunnerherself,Rileycompeted in four marathons during her time as a student and as a coach, including the 2003PortlandMarathonwhereshewastheninthfemalefinisher.Priortothestartofthe2007trackand field season, Riley completed her fifth marathon, finishing the P.F. Chang’s Rock and RollMarathoninTempein3:01.26andplacing12thoverall.ShealsowasthesecondArizonawomantofinishtherace.

AnativeofPortland,Ore.,Rileyattainedherbachelor’sdegreeinearlychildhoodeducationfromOregonState in2004and is currentlypursuingherMaster’sdegree inHigherEducationfromArizonaState.

Duringthe2006season,theSunDevilwomencontinuedtoshowimprovementwithAprilKubishtasettingortyingtheschoolrecord inboththe indoorandoutdooreventwhilehiswomencontinuedtorewritetherecordbooks.KubishtabecamethethirdSunDeviltobreak13feetinindoorcompetition,settingthenewstandardat4.14m(13-7.00)whileCaraWalkerjoinedthe13-footclubwithherclearanceof3.99m(13-1.00).Outdoors,KubishtatiedAn-gelaTavlarides’schoolrecordof4.10m(13-5.25)whileWalkercleared3.81m(12-6.00)tobecomethethirdwomantobreak12feet.Inall,Barelahascoachedallfivewomenthatmakeuptheindoorrecordlistandnineofthe10womenontheoutdoorrankingsboard.

Onthemen’sside,Barelahelpedmulti-eventstandoutJoshuaKinnamanattainAll-Ameri-cahonorstwiceduringtheyearasKinnamanrecordedapersonalbestclearanceof4.50m(14-9.00)atboththeNCAAIndoorandNCAAOutdoorChampionshipsenroutetothenationalhonor.BarelaalsohelpedBrandonGlennbecometheseventhSunDevil toclear17 feet incompetitionasGlennplacedsixthattheTexasRelaystoagainrecordthesecond-bestmarkinschoolhistoryof5.30m(17-4.50).

The2005seasonsawsolidimprovementsfromthepolevaultpitsasGlennfinishedseventhattheNCAAIndoorChampionshipstoearnhisfirstAll-Americahonorandthefirstsincefortheprogramintheeventsince1994.Glenncleared5.40m(17-8.50)tobecomeNo.2ontheall-timeindoorlistatASUandjustthethirdSunDeviltobreakthe17-footmarkincompeti-tion.BarelaalsoworkedwithTavlaridesandWalkeronthewomen’sside,helpingTavlaridessetthethen-schoolrecordindoorswithaclearanceof4.03m(13-2.50)whileWalkerbecameonlythethirdvaultertobreak12feet(3.90m/12-9.50).

Outdoors,BarelacoachedGlenn,TavlaridesandWalkertowardthetopoftheASUlistswithGlenntyingforsecondall-timeat5.30m(17-4.50)whilebothwomenwerethefirsttobreak12feetincompetitionforASUwithTavlaridesalsobecomingthefirsttoclear13feet(4.10m/13-5.25).Walkerfinishedwithabestof3.81m(12-6.00).

Inoutdoorchampionshipmeets,Barela’screwhadmixedresults.TavlaridesscoredatthePac-10meet,finishingthirdoverallbeforeplacingthirdintheregionand20thatthenationalmeet.Walkerimprovedfrom13thattheconferenceto11thattheregionalmeetwhileGlenn,whono-heightedatasoggyregionalmeet,finishedasthePac-10runner-up.

Inhisfirstseasonleadingthepolevaulters,BarelacoachedTavlaridestoapairofschoolre-cordswhilealsohelpingapairofmen,GlennandStephenDolk,earnpositionsontheschool'stopmarkslist.Tavlaridessettheschoolstandardat3.66m(12-00.00)indoorsbeforeestab-lishingtheoutdoormarkat3.80m(12-5.00).Forthemen,DolkscoredatthePac-10Cham-pionshipmeet(eighthplace)whileGlennrepresentedtheUnitedStatesattheIAAFWorldJuniorChampionshipsfollowingasecond-placefinishintheAmericanmeet.

BarelahasbeenapartoftheArizonaStatetrackandfieldprograminthepastasastudent-athlete.FollowingoneyearatNewMexicoJuniorCollegeinHobbs,N.M.,BarelacametoTempewherehecompetedinpolevaultanddecathloneventsfortheSunDevils.AmemberofASU’s1977NCAAChampionshipteam,BarelastillranksamongthebestinpolevaultatASU.Heistiedforninthontheoutdoorlistswithamarkof16-8achievedin1980andistiedforfourthindoorswithamarkof16-6.

FollowingthreeyearsofcompetitionwiththeSunDevils,Barelagraduatedin1980withhisBachelor’s ineducationandwashiredontoteachatTempeHighSchool.Barela taughtphysicaleducationandcoachedthetrackandfieldandvolleyballteamsfrom1980-1985.Fol-lowinghisteachingstint,heopenedhisowncardealership,whichhestilloperatestoday.

In1997,BarelareturnedtothecoachingranksandbeganoverseeingthepolevaultersofDesertVistaHighSchoolinTempe.InhissevenyearswithDVHS,heguidedsixvaulterstostaterunner-upcrowns.Healsoassistedinleadingtheteamtostatetramtitles.In1999,thegirlswontheArizona5Atitlebeforefinishingasrunners-upeachofthelastthreeseasons.

BarelaalsocoachedtwovaulterstoJuniorOlympicnationaltitlesin2003asKubishtaandGlenneachbroughthomegoldmedals.BarelaalsocoachedKubishtatoback-to-back4Astatetitles.Shealsostillholdsthestaterecordof13-0.25.Oneyearpriortohisnationalsuccess,BarelatookonmorecoachingdutiesashebegantoguidethepolevaultersatMesaCommunityCollegein2002.InhistwoyearsatMCC,hisvaultersfinishedasnationalrunners-upsixtimestotal inmen’s andwomen’s indoor andoutdoorpole vaultwhile also earningAll-Americaaccolades.

Barelacontinuestocompetefollowinghisreturntothetrackin1998.Thatyear,hecom-petedintheUSAMastersChampionshipsinOrono,Maine,inthe40+-agedivision.Hewonthenationaltournamentwithavaultof15-1andearnedaberthintotheNikeWorldMastersGamesinEugene,Ore.Competingintwoevents,Barelafinishedastherunner-upinboththepolevaultandthepentathlon.Heisstillintrainingashisgoalistobreaktheworldrecordforpolevaultinginthe50-59agedivision.

DanO’BrienreturnsforhissecondseasonasavolunteercoachontheArizonaStateUniversitytrackandfieldstaffandwillagainworkwiththemulti-eventathletesfollowinganothersuccessfulseasonin2006.

O’BrienworkedwithJacquelynJohnsonandJoshuaKinnamanduringtheindoorandout-doorseasons,helpingbothattainAll-Americahonorsinbothseasons.

Bothathletessatoutmuchofthe2005season,butcamebackstrongin2006.Johnson,followingaredshirtseason,wonboththeindoorpentathlonandtheoutdoorheptathlontocollecthersecondandthirdnationaltitles,respectively,whilealsocollectingthethirdandfourthAll-Americahonors inhercareer.Followingan injury,KinnamanearnedthefirsttwoAll-Americahonorsofhiscareer,placingeighthintheindoorheptathlonbeforetakingsixthintheoutdoordecathlon.

Oneofthetopathletesinthehistoryofthesport,O’Brienwonthedecathlonatthe1996AtlantaOlympicsandearnedthedistinctionofthe“World’sGreatestAthlete”.PriortohisgoldmedalperformanceintheSummerGames,hewongoldmedalsatthe1991,1993and1995WorldChampionshipswhileaddingtitlesatthe1994GoodwillGamesinSt.Peters-burg,Russia.O’BrienlateraddedaGoodwillGamestitleatthe1998meetinNewYork.

Aftersecuringgoldatthe1991USATrack&FieldChampionships,O’Briencapturedthesamecrownfouryears inarow(1993-1996)heading intotheAtlantaGames.Atthestartofthatrun,healsosteppedoutofthedecathlontocompeteatthe1993IAAFWorldChampionshipsandwontheheptathlontitlewithaworldrecordpointtotal.HissuccessatthenationallevelalsoearnedhimanotherdistinctionashisfivechampionshipstiedhimwithBillToomeyforthemosteverinthehistoryofthemeet.

AnativeofPortland,Ore.,O’BrienisnostrangertothePac-10ConferenceasheservedasavolunteerassistantcoachatconferencerivalWashingtonStatefrom1992-98.Then,in1997,hemovedtotheValleywherehecontinuedtotrainandcompete.

Despite injuriespreventinghimfromcompetingfortheUnitedStates,O’BrienwasapartofthelasttwoOlympiads.WorkingwithNBC,O’Brienprovidedanalysisforthetele-visionnetwork’scoverageoftrackandfieldinboththe2000SydneyGamesandthe2004AthensGames.

Priortohissuccessontheinternationalstage,O’BriencompetedforandgraduatedfromtheUniversityofIdaho.Inhisseniorcampaign,heearnedAll-AmericahonorsbyplacingseventhattheNCAAIndoorChampionshipsinthe55mhurdles.TheformerVandalnowhashisnameadornedonthehomevenueofhisAlmamater,theDanO’BrienTrackComplex.

Frank Perez enters his first season as the athletic trainer for theArizonaStateUniversitytrack&fieldandcrosscountryprogramsafterjoiningtheSportsMedicinestaffinDecemberof2006.

AnativeofSlaton,Texas,PerezearnedhisBachelorofScienceinExerciseSportsScienceaswellasaBachelorofArtsinSpanishfromTexasTechUniversityin2002.Fromthere,PerezearnedaMaster’sdegreeinAthleticTrainingfromtheTTUHealthSciencesCenterin2006.

Prior to joining the Sun DevilAthletic Department, Perez worked with PhysiotherepyAssociates and served as the head athletic trainer for Shadow Mountain High School in theValley.BeforecomingtoArizona,PerezworkedforTTUHealthSciencesCenterandoversawthemen’sbasketballandtrack&fieldprograms.Duringthesametime,heworkedwithath-letesfromLubbockChristianandLubbockEstacadohighschools.

Inhissparetime,Perezenjoysmountainbiking,hiking,fishing,campingandspendingtimewithhisdog,Sydney.

Ben Hilgart is in his second year as a SeniorAssistant Coach forSportsPerformancewherehecoordinatesthestrengthandconditioningprogramfor the trackand fieldprogram.Hilgart’sdutiesalsoseehim

workwiththecrosscountryandwrestlingsquadswhilealsoassistingwithfootball.A native of Park Falls,Wis., Hilgart attended and played football atWestern Illinois

University where he graduated in 2000 with a B.S. in Physical Education. From there, heattendedtheUniversityofTexasatElPasowhereheearnedhisM.S.inKinesiologyin2003.

Prior to attaining his current position within Sun DevilAthletics, Hilgart served as anAssociate Strength and Conditioning Coach atThe Ohio State University where he workedwithmen’sandwomen’strackandfield,women’scrosscountry,wrestling,men’sswimmingandmen’sandwomen’slacrosse.

yearafterworkingwiththecrosscountryteamsduringthefall.AnativeofHuntingtonBeach,Calif.,Pawsonwasa2006graduateoftheUniversityofthe

PacificinStockton,Calif.,wheresheearnedherB.A.inSportsSciencewithanemphasisinAthleticTraining.WhilewiththeTigers,Pawsonworkedwiththewomen’svolleyball,softball,women’swaterpoloandmen’sbasketballprogramsoncampuswhilealsocoveringnumeroushighschoolfootballevents.

Pawson is currently working toward her Master’s degree in community recources anddevelopmentwithafocusonrecreationatArizonaState.Awayfromworkandschool,Pawsonenjoysoutdoorsports,watchingtheLosAngelesLakers(NBA)andspendingtimewithfamilyandfriends.

Following her playing days, DiTrani continued on in the Red Fox athletic departmentas an athletic trainerworkingwith the football, softball andmen’s lacrosseprograms.Priortocoming toTempe, shealsoworkedwith thevolleyball andwomen’s lacrosseprogramsatVasserCollege.
