His last bookpublished is 'Dispositors in Astroi ogy' .His daringprinciples propounded in this work HORA SHATAKhave opened new vistas for study and research in thefield of predictive Astrology.

It is my great privilege to present this meritoriousHindi book HORA SHATAK first time in English,

contairring rules for the judgement of horoscopes, many

of which will not be foulrd in any otl'rer book on the

subject. He put them in print only after he was fully

convinced by practical application of their efficacy and'

correctness. I am fully confident that this book, though -

small in size yet worthy in its contents, will definitelyenhance the knowledge and predictive capability of our

readers.Though the great savant is no more, yet the rich

treasure of knowledge left by him will continue to guide

INTRODUCTION

In spite of the fact that numerous authoritativeclassics on Hindu Astrology are available, we have takenthe liberty to present this small volume on the subject.We have felt it very necessary due to our experience ofseveral years that we discovered that certain basicconcepts of Astrology that had lost sight of and had notfound place in the books of Astrology at presentavailable. As will be seen by the readers after a perusalof this book, there is a good number of special aspectsand principles brought to light in this book, which willprove to be of immense practical utility not only forpersons with an elementary knowledge of Astrology butalso for those engaged in research and are in dnadvanced stage of their studies.

The basic concepts of Astrology dealt with in thisbook are such which ascribe great significance andimportance to the connections between a house, its lordand its significator (Karnka). We have found in ourprolonged study and research that basic rules for properanalysis of Yogas in Astrology, which cause certainevents in the lives of the natives have not been dealtwith in the available astrological classics. We have triedto fill this gap to the best of our ability by analysing anddemonstrating such principles logically because it is ourfirm belief that logic is the soul of the science ofAstrology. We have often observed that the students ofAstrology while dealing with certain aspects in anativity keep only a limited or partial vision on the

principles of assessment of a horoscope. We have,therefore, made an attempt to devise rules to examine acertain human aspect from a number of houses and weardently hope that the methods demonstrated here willreceive universal acceptance and recognition.

A serious consideration of facts will inevitably leadto the conclusion that symbology plays a very importantpart in predictive Astrology. It will be very difficult forone to successfully study and correctly understand thesubject of AstroloW,if he is ignorant of significance ofsymbology. How important is the use of symbology willbe apparent f rom a perusal of s lok a 47 whichdemonstrates that all matters related to the Ascendant(Lagna) can be easily analysed and determined throughthe principles of symbology. Similarly another exampleof the practical utility of symbology will be found inthe case of Mercury who has been described as'Kumara' (a boy of tender age). We have found that asMercury represents very young age therefore he giveshis results in the early part of life (see sloka 30).

With due respects to the learned and very proficientsin Astrolo1y, we humbly submit that the generallyaccepted theory that a planet when retrograde gainsmore strength, is not wholly acceptable to us. We,however, agree that the theory is true partially. Whiledealing with this subject, we have fully discussed theprinciples laid down in Uttara Kalamrita fbr retrogradeplanets in exaltation and in debilitation alongwith othersituations in which a planet is retrograde. We areconfident that all those engaged in the serious study ofAstrology, after practical applicaton of our views, willsupport us.

We are perhaps the first in the field of Astrology todiscover, me-+ion and put to practical use the special

effects of the aspects of planets, on either side of a houseor the planet situated in it (qrlffi Eful. We are of theview that special effects of such aspects not only provethe validity of Yogas like Adhiyoga (for example, seeSloka 28) also enable us to correctly interpret the effectsof the concerned planets.

The method of determining the times of events likemarriage, dawn of fortune (Bhagyodaya)by calculatingthe average period of planets l ike Mercury etc.,described by us here has been devised after prolongedresearch and will not be found in any other work onAstrology. This method could also be usefully appliedfor determination of the length of academic career, etc.We have only indicated the results of our research andtheir applicability on other matters concerning a nativity,will depend on further research by our readers.

The authors of various astrological works \avegenerally laid stress on the examinati6n of the 8th hdusefor determining the cause of death but we feel that it isalso important to take into account the disposition andstrength of the Ascendant and its lord for this purpose.(See sloka 64 and the illustration given by us).

Although we do claim that many of the concepts ofpredictive Astrology discussed in this book, have beenbrought to light for the first time, but we are quite surethat none of them is against the established principlesof Hindu Astrology. All the principles mentioned herecan be authenticated by reference to classical texts butwe have not found it possible to do so for want of space.

While we are confident that meticulous applicationof principles contained in this book will enable ourreaders to make amazingly accurate prediction. Wewould feel more than satisfied if even appreciablesuccess is achieved in this direction.

Part I

Elementary Knowledg" of Astrology

Before we take up the subject proper, we proposeto impart in this section some elementary knowledgeof the basics of Hindu Astrology. This will help thosewho have very little knowledge but are keen to studythis subject. It is a matter of common knowledge thatthere are many persons who have no elementarygrounding in this subject but are keen to study bookson Astrology.

The birth chart is the map of the heavens at the timeof birth and contains planets in the positions as they arein the zodiac at that time.

ZodiacThe first thing we should know is"Zodiac". It is an

imaginary broad belt in the heavens extending about 9degrees on each side of the ecliptic. Ecliptic is the pathof the Sunwhich (path) passes exactly tfuough the centreof the Zodiac. The Zodiac is an imaginary circle of 360degrees and our learned ancients divided this circle intotwelve equal parts of 30 degrees each. Each equal partof 30 degrees is known as a sign (Rasi).

Signs or Rasis and Planets

There are twelve signs and nine planets. Out of thenine planets there are only seven who are lords of thetwelve signs. The Sun and the Moon own only one signeach, the remaining five viz., Mars, Mercury, JupiterVenus and Saturn own two signs each. The remainingtwo planets Rahu and Ketu do not own any signs asthey are termed as shadowy planets representing thelord of sign in which they are placed. The following tableshows the 12 signs and their lords.

II-Form of Birth Chart followed in North India.

The difference in the two forms is that while in form I

signs (Rasis) will always be at the locations (houses) as

slio*n in the form. If the rising sign or the Ascendant is

Aries, the house containing the sign Aries will becomethe Ascendant and also the firsthouse' Then in clockwisedirection, we will have the subsequent eleven houses' If

the Ascendant falls, say, in the sign of Sagittarius, the

house containing this sign Sagittarius will become the

Ascendant and the first house and subsequent houses

will be counted in the clockwise manner further.

In form II that is the one followed in North India,

the house marked I (first)will always be the Ascendantwhatever be the rising sign. For example, the rising sign

is Libra (No. 7) or in other words the Ascendant falls in

the sign Libra, we will put the Ascendant in the first

house marking it as 7. Thereafter we move in anti-

clockwise direclion and the second house will be in the

sign Scorpio (No. 8), the third in Sagittarius and._s-o on'

tf-the rising sign is Leo, the Ascendant in Leo, (No' 5)

will be the first house. The second house will be in Virgo

(No. 6) the third in Libra (No. 7) and so on.

Another difference is that in the form used in SouthIndia, the number of the sign is not written in the chart,and one has to remember the places reserved for Ariesand other signs which would always remain the same.In the form used in North India we show the Ascendantby putting the number of the rising sign in the first houseand the eleven signs subsequent to the rising sign inother eleven houses. This will be better understood bythe following birth chart.

Benefic and Malefic PlanetsThe Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu are natural

malefics. Jupiter and Venus are natural benefics. TheMoon is a benefic when strong and a malefic whenweak. On'the Amavasy a day the Moon loses all herlustre on account of nearness to the Sun and isrendered absolutely weak. Then begins the bright halfof the lunar month and Moon starts moving awayfrom the Sun. When she is 72 degrees away, she issupposed to be in some strength. When the Moon isL80 degrees away from the Sun she at ta ins fu l lstrength. Thus the Moon is a benefic when more than72 degrees away frorn the Sun and a malefic whenwithin 72 degrees of the Sun. Mercury is a beneficwhen alone or is associated with benefics. He becomesa malefic, when conjoined with malefics.

Aspects of the PlanetsA planet exerts his influence on the house in which

he is posited. In addition he exerts his influence (benefic

or malefic) on the house or planet he aspects. The Sun,the Moon, Mercury and Venus have full aspects on thehouse seventh from them. Mars, in addition to his aspecton the 7th house, also'aspects the 4th and 8th housesfrom himself. Jupiter, Rahu and Ketu in addition to thetheir 7th house aspect, also aspect the 5th and 9th housesfrom themselves. Saturn in addition to his 7th house aspect,also aspects the 3rd and 10th houses from himself.

In the example horoscope givenby us itwill be seenthat Mercury as lord of the 3rd house posite*in the 5thhouse aspects the 11th house. The Sun who is lord ofthe 2nd house is posited in the 5th aspects the 11th house.Mars who is in the 2nd as lord of the 5th and 10th housesaspects the 5th, 8th and 9th houses. The Moon as lordof the Ascendant aspects the Ascendant. Jupiter in the11th as lord of the 6th and 9th aspects the 3rd,5th and7th. Venus in the 6th as lord of the 11th and 4th housesaspects 12th house. Saturn in the 1st as lord of the 7thand 8th houses aspects the 1Oth, 3rd and 7th houses.Rahu aspects the 10th, 12th and 2nd houses. Ketu aspectsthe 4th, 6th and 8th houses. The Moon aspects Saturnand Saturn aspects the Moon.

Male and Female Plan-etsThe Sun, Mars and Jupiter are male planets. The

Moon, Venus and Rahu are females and Mercury, Saturnand Ketu are considered eunuchs.

Vimshottari Dasa SystemTtiere are several Dasa systems for timing the events

but Vimshottari Dasa system has been acclaimed as onegiving more accurate results than other systems.

The total of different major periods (Mahadasas) ofthe planets under the Vimshottari Dasa system has been


put as L20 years which our ancients considered as theprobable natural life span of a human being.

The position of the Moon at birth is taken intoaccount in the calculation of major periods. Everyconstellation or Nakshatra covers L3 degrees and 20minutes (13",20') of zodiacal space. Each constellation(as already mentioned by us earlier) has a planetassigned as its lord and Dasa at birth is determinedby lord of the constellation occupied by tl-re Moon atthat time.

Every constellation has four quarters (Padas) of3"-20' each. Each sign contains 2r/+ constellations. Thelongitudinal span of a sign being 30 degrees and of aconstellation L3 degrees and 20 minutes, thus 27constellations are accommodated uncler the L2 signs asshown in table on page No. 2L and 22.

The figures1.,2,3,4 within brackets adjacent to thenames of the constellations are their quarters or padas.

The following method is adopted for calculating thebalance of major period at birth. Suppose the longitudeof tlre Moon at birth is 3-13'-12' (that is Cancer 13"-12').Cancer is composed of one quarter or 3"-20' ofPunarvasu, four quarters (13'-20') of Pushyami and fourquarters of Aslesha. As the longitude of the Moon isCancer 1.3o-1,2', it has passed the 4th quarter ofPunarvasu in this sign and is in Pushyami. To find outhow much the Moon has moved in Pushyami, we willdeduct 3"-20' of Punarvasu from the Moon's 13". 12' .Thus the balance remains 9".32'. The extent of thewhole of Pushyami is '1.3"-20' .

The lord of th isconstellation is Saturn, whose total major period isL9 years. Therefore 1.3'-20'being equal to 19 years,9"-32'wil l be equal to L4 years,6 months and 22daysthis indicates that 1.4years,6 months and22 days ofSaturn's major period are already over at birth andbalance that would remain in credit at birth will be L9years minus 14 years,6 months and 22 days, that is,4 years, 5 months and 8 days.

According to order given by us earlier about themajor periods, the subsequent major periods followedwill be of Mercury, Ketu, Venus, The Sun, The MooryMars etc.

After finding out the major period at birth we haveto find out the sub-periods or Antardasas in the majorperiod of each planet. The sub-periods of all the nineplanets are in proportion to the years of their majorperiods. The first sub-period always belongs to lordof the major per iod and the sub-per iods of theremaining eight planets will be in the order given inthe table for major periods subsequently.

Mercury -Skin, breathing canal, intelligence, braincapacity (analytical), intestines, education, writing,reading etc.

Rahus is like Saturn and Ketu is like Mars.


Signification of HousesFirst house - (Ascendant) - Physical stature,

complexion, constitution, heaith, vitality, naturaldispositions and tendencies, personality, honour,dignity, prosperity, head, upper part of the face,longevity, start of life etc.

Second house-Money matters, assets profit orloss, worldly attainments, administration, jewellery,right eye, nails, tongue, nose, teeth, family members.This is also the house of death inflicting planet or aMarakasthana.

Third house - Mental inclination, ability, courage,valour, provess, younger brothers and sistersneighbours, hands, throat etc.

Fourth house-Mother, one's home, residence,conveyances, domestic environment, vehicles, lands,fields, buildings, ancestral property, academic educationetc.

Fi f th house-Progeny (chi ldren), p leasures,affections, recreation, sports, competitive activities,intelligence, high learning, stomach etc.

Sixth house-Sickness, disease, food, serviceconditions, servants, cattle, tenants, enemies etc.

In a horoscope houses 1, 4,7 and 10 are calledquadrants (Kendras), 5 and 9 trines (Trikonas),2,5,8and 11 cadet (Phanaparas) and 3,6,8,12as succedant

i(Apoklimas). As the Sth and 9th are trines they shouldnot be treated as Panaphara and Apoklima respectively.The houses 3, 6,10 and l-1 are also called Upachayaswhich rneans houses of growth. The Lagna (Ascendant)or the 1st house is as a Kendra as well as a Tiikona.

: Houses 6, 8, 12 are termed as inauspicious houses(dusthanas). The 3rd house is also not considered anauspicious house.

There is no doubt about the importance and efficacyof the above rule laid down in Sarvartha Chintamanifor consideration of all astrological problems; but wefind it necessary to add that when we give considerationto a particula4 problem of subjec! it is not sufficient toconfine our analysis only to the house concerned butextend it to the examina\ion of other concerned housesalso. For example, if we have to consider any problemabout speech, we should not restrict our examinationto the second house only; but should pay due attentionto the disposition of the fifth house also. Similarly allproblems about gain and loss of money shouli beexamined with reference to both the second andeleventh houses. If any two amongst Rahu, Saturn and the Sun or allof the three exert their influence by aspect or conjunctionon any house, the native will definitely get separatedfrom the things or person represented by that house.Thus if Saturn, Rahu and the Sun or Saturn and Rahuor the Sun and Saturn or the Sun and Rahu, cast theirinlluence on the 10th house, its lord and signifiqator byaspect or conjunction, the native is deprived of hiskingdom (if he is a king), his position, title, profession,honour and the name and fame. How much time suchevents take to manifest, depends on the strength of thesemalefic planets. The same should aPPly to other houses.If the 7th house, its lord and its significator (Venus or

Jupiter) become the victim of such malefic influences,the husband and wife get separated. If the 2nd housefalls under such evil influences, the native is deprivedof his wealth and assets. When the Karaka of a house is in that house in hisown sign and has benefic influence on him, he can neverharm the signification of that house (his own house). Itshould alsobe borne in mind that while examining for

children the 9th house must additionally be given due

consideratiory because the 9th house being the 5th from5th house also becomes significator of children.

house will be destroyed. For exampie if the Sun beposited in 5th house in the signAquarius (Kumbha), hethen by aspecting the 11th house (his own house) willdestroy the elder brothers. There is a widely recognisedprinciple of Hindu Astrology viz., "fi * t+rq, wftgd Edil ilFt ilFnk gfu:'(This means that any house which hasits lord posited in it or is aspected by its lord, prospers)and we have no intention of ignoring it; but we havefound in practical experience that this rule does notapply to the life prospects of the person represented bythe concerned house. While the aspect of the Sun on the11th house in the circumstances described above, willresult in financial gains to the native, will give himsuccess in his undertaking, will enable him to acquireconveyances, but the life of the elder brother representedby that house will be harmed. In other words the nativewill lose his elder brother.

Added Strength of a Planet inconjunction with Rahu or Ketu

If a naturat benefit be in his own sign in associationwith Ketu or Rahu, the house concerned should beconsidered extremely skong. For example. Kefu with)upiter in the sign Sagittarius in the sixth house will beindicative of a very strong enemy. In this connectionthe following birth chart No. 2 of Pt. ]awaharlal Nehrumay'be seen. Nehru ji had to fight with a very strongenemy, viz., the United Kingdom for achievingindependence for his country.

The logic behind this theory is that Ketu being ashadowy planet (a magnetic point) does not possess


any physical body of his own and gives exclusivelythe results of the sign and the house in which it isposited.

According to accepted pr inciples of Hindu

Astrology, the Sun and the Moon are always in direct

motion (that is, they never move backwards) and Rahu

and Ketu are aiways retrograde (that is, they always

move backwards). However, the five planets, namely,Mars, Mercury, jupiter, Venus and Saturn have both

direct and seemingly retrograde motion. But the actual

fact is that these five planets are always in direct motion;but because of their relative movement with respect toearth they sometimes look like moving backward. Thiscan be explained by the example of two trains movingin the same direction on parallel rails. If the speed ofone is less than the other, then to the passengers of thefaster train the slower train would appear to be movingin the reverse direction.

In this relation it must always be kept in mind thatin Astrology what we see is more important andacceptable than the factual position and the effects ofthe planets should be judged accordingly by using logicand symbology. For example, according to scientists theSun is a star like other stars in the sky and does notrotate like the Earth and other planets. Yet we on theearth see the Sun rising in the East and setting in theWest. Therefore in Astrology we accept the Sun as aplanet rotating like other planets.

is, nothing. If a planet be retrograde while in his

debilitation house (of fall), his strength is similar as if in

his exaltation. A planet in conjunction with anotherplanet who is in exaltation gets % Rupa' When he-islssociated with another who is in his debilitation, he

gets nothing. A planet if he be in conjunction withmalefics who are his friends, or with benefics who

Butsince, Jupiter is retrograde his strengthwill almost be similar to that when in exaltation.


In short the sense which slokas L3 and 14 mean toconvey is that the nearness of retrograde Jupiter to hissign of exaltation (Cancer) will mean lack of childrenand here his nearness to his sign of debil itation(Capricorn) will mean abundance of children.

Comments-The author has confined his attentionon Jupiter only because as mentioned by him earlier,

Jupiter is not only the lord of the Sth (the house ofchildren); but also significator of children (SantanaKaraka) for the Scorpio Ascendant.

If Cancer be the Ascendant with Mars in the 3rd,

Mercury and Venus in the 4th and Jupiter in the

6th, the 10th house which is in the sign of Mars will

be aspected by Jupiter, The 10th house will also be

aspected by benefics Mercury and Venus (this Yoga

is present in the horoscope of Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru)'

Under these influences Nehruji continued as the

Prime Minister of India fot 17long years and enjoyed

name, fame, honours and vast administrative and

political power. As Mars TPects his own sign Aries

in the 10th house, the 5th lioise with the sign Scorpio

(the other sign of Mars) is also strengthened by reflex

action. This made Nehru a great intellectual and

diplomat.The point made out is that although the 5th

house has no benefic inJluence on it, but has become

strong because it is the other sign of Mars, the first

sign Aries as already explained being strengthened

If Aquarius be the Ascendant, Mars be in the 10th(in his own sign Scorpio) and Saturn be in the 8th,aspecting Mars, the younger brother of the native willhave short life. Mars fully represents younger brotheras he is not only lord of the 3rd; but also Karaka foryounger brother. Being in the 10th in his own sign Marsbecomes strong enough to give a younger brother buton account of being 8th to the 3rd (his own sign) andmalefic aspect of Saturn on him, younger brother getsonly a short life span.

This rule requires careful application and should beappl ied to the relat iveS in their infancy alone,particularly when they do not have a good horoscopeof their own from the longevity point of view.

Suppose the Ascendant is Aries and Jupiter as lordof the 9th is posited in the 4th (8th to 9th) in his sign ofexaltation and is aspected by Saturn from the 2nd; allthe requirements of Shri Bhasin's rule have been met,so the result should be short life of the father. But if thefather's horoscope shows long life for him, I am sure,the disposition of planets in his son's horoscope, cannotshorten his life.

This rule may be applicable in the charts of theparents if they are under some bad periods or haveaccidental prone h6roscopes. So this rule is to be appliedcarefully keeping the chart of the concerned relative alsoin mind.

According to principles of Astrology, the characterof planets located on either side of a house has to betaken into account to assess its results. If a house ishemmed in between natural malefics its advancement.is destroyed.

(In this connection the view of the author of'fatakadesa Marga' is as follows : If all the maleficssurround a Bhava on both sides, occupy the 4th and8th houses reckoned from the same, the annihilation ofthe Bhava will be the result. But if, the benefics take theplace of the malefics, the prosperity of the Bhava isassured.)

Adhiyoga has been acclaimed as a very beneficialYoga by almost all authoritative astrological works, foraffluence, good health and longevity. The Chandra-adhiyoga is formed when benefics (Mercury, Jupiter andVenus) are posited in the 6th,7th and the 8th houseswith reference to the Moon. (There is an Adhiyogaknown as Lagna-adhiyoga for the formation of whichthe benefics have to be insimilar positionswithreferenceto the Lagna). The result of Adhiyoga has beendescribedas under-

"The person will be polite and trustworthy, will havean enjoyable and huppy life, full of luxuries andaffluence, will inflict defeats on his enemies, will behealthy and will live long."

In this Yoga the Lagna or the Moon is not actuallysurrounded by the benefics on both sides but they(Moon and Lagna) receive benefic influence on bothsides (i.e. on the 2nd and L2th houses to them), becauseof the aspects of benefics from their position in the 6th

and 8th houses. This principle can be advantageouslyapplied for the judgement of any of the house in thehoroscope. If there are benefics in the 6th and the 8thhouses from a Bhava (house) they will be aspecting the12th and 2nd houses with reference to that house whichwill be tantamount to their being present there-andby such disposition the significations of the house willget boosted. If, however, there are malefics in the 6thand 8th from the Moon, the Lagna or any other house,the results will be quite opposite.

Comments-The presence of Jupiter in the 6th or8th with reference to the Moon, Lagna or any otherhouse will serve the purpose of this principle. Thoughsuch disposition will not go under the term'Adhiyoga',the houses 2nd and 12th to the Moon, Lagta or any otherhouse with reference to which Jupiter is in 6th or 8th,will receive his benign aspect (the 2nd and L2th willreceive the 9th and 7th houses aspect or the 5th and 7thhouse aspect of Jupiter, when he is in the 6th or 8th houserespectively.

Here I cannot help raising one very important point.It has been mentioned in almost all classical works ofHindu Astrology that if there are no planets in the 2ndand 12th from the Moon, a very inauspiciousYoga knownas'Kemadruma (fuql is formed. The result of this Yogahas been given by'Jatakadesa Marga' as under-

"The man born in Kemadruna Yoga will always beintent on other people's wives, desirous of other's food,engaged in doing wicked and unrighteous deeds,plunged in debts and indulging in sensual pleasures."

There will be no Kemadruma Yoga if there is anyplanet in Kendra from the Moon or if the Moon is inKendra from Lagna. My view is that there should be no

We would like to mention one more point to theprinciple given under sloka 24. The benefic results ofthe aspects of benefics in the 6th and 8th with referenceto the Lagna, Moon or any other house will materialiseonly when the L2th and 2nd houses from them arevacant or occupied by some benefic planet only.

Even the Lagna-Adhiyoga and Chandra-Adhiyogaare" said to be vitiated if any of the planets in the 6th,7th or 8th are aspected by or associated with anymalefic.

In the horoscope of Swami Vivekananda theimportant roles are played by the Sun in the Lagna,Jupiter in the 10th and the Moon and Saturn in the9th. But for Jupiter in the LOth, he would not havebeen able to reach the dizzy heights of fame andspirituality which he achieved in his short span oflife. The Moon and Saturn in the 9th became the causeof his renunciation of the worldly comforts.

In the horoscope of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansait is Jupiter, the Satvik planet and real significator ofuniversal Dharma and spirituality, who played themost significant role. It is evident in the chart thatJupiter aspects the 9th (house of Dharma) and Lagna,lord of the 9th Mercury and the Atmakaraka Sun. In the chart of Mahatma Gandhi, the Sun is in theL2th house powerfully aspected by ]upiter who,though a natural benefic, is lord of the 3rd and 6th.Jupiter is in the 10th from the Moon aspected bySaturn. This gives considerable spirituality. fupiterhere may be taken in the 8th house in the bhava chart.

The soul of Gandhiji, with all its egoism, self-loveand deep seated desires is vested in the Sun. As he isin the 1.2th, he gives him spirituality. Mercury in theAscendant produces keenness of mind. On the basis of thisprinciple, we are of the view that when Venus andthe lord of the 2nd conjoin in the 12th house, therewi l l be abundance o f luxur ies , comfor ts andpleasures. As these cannot be obtained withoutmoney, the Yoga provides plentiful money for suchenjoyments. This will be further discussed in the nextsloka.

Thereason for this is that Venus, the significator ofluxuries in such circumstances, will not only haveclose relationship with the house of luxuries, comfortsand pleasures but also with its lord. Our view thatthe placement of Venus in the 12th is very beneficialand gives rise to Dhana yoga is supported by the

Not only in the 1'2th,but the presence of Venus in the 6th house also isequally good, as from the 6th Venus would aspect the12th and will give in excess the significations luxuries,comforts and sensual pleasures of the L2th house' Theother point of view is that such a Venus would be inthe L2th house from the house of life partner that is7th house.

The Sun, lord of the 9th who is also a Rajya givingplanet seems to say, "I am quite competent to givekindgom; but unfortunately I have been placed in 12thhouse as a result of which instead of giving kingdom Iwill, for a long time, create conditions for rebellionagainst the administrators of the kingdom. But do notget disheartened. I have still been left with somespecialities of mine. The first speciality is that althoughI am in the 12th I am posited in the sign of my friendMars. The second speciality is that my bosom friendMoon with her full strength on account of being fullMoon and inher sign of exaltation is giving me supportby his powerful benefic aspect on me. All matters and happenings at the time of birthare considered from the Lagna. On the basis of ourpract ical exper ience, we feel that considerat ionshould also be given to these matters from the Suryaand Chandra Lagna, that is, the signs or housesoccupied by the Sun and Moon. Similarly the lordsof these signs or houses should be subjected to thesame assessment as is done for lord of the Lagna. Thusthe caste of the person and other matters like birth oftwins etc. should be considered from the Sun andMoon sign also. In short, for the assessment of thematters referred above, disposition of all the threeLagnas, namely, the Lagna, Chandra Lagna and SuryaLagna and their lords, should be judged carefully. Our purpose in drawing attention of the readersto this sloka is that since the fact of being a bastard isconcerned with the birth, such matters should beexamined from the Lagna.

It is for this reason that the learneds in Astrologyhave adv ised tha t the sources o f l i ve l ihood orprofession of a person should be determined from the10th house which is most powerful as reckoned fromthe Lagna, Chandra Lagna or Surya Lagna. As anextention to this a particular house is to be adjudgedfrom the Lagna, Chandra Lagna or Surya Lagna, theoutcome, should be predicted from the strongest outof the three Lagnas or from the majority of the threeLagnas.

Comments-Generally the ancient astrologicalworks, which are recognised as authoritative and onwhich the whole system of Hindu Astrolol;y is based,have recommended examination of a horo;cope fromthe Lagna and Chandra Lagna. They have also addedthat the predictions would be more accut'ate if they'are made according to dispositon of a planet withreference to the Lagna or the Moon wttichever isstronger of the two. As far as my knowledge goes itis Maharishi Parashara who in his famous, mostrecognised and authoritative work'Brihat ParasharaHora ' , has recommended the examinat ion o f ahoroscope with reference to the Lagna, Chandra Lagnaand Surya Lagna, and that also when the Lagna, Sunand Moon occupy different signs. For this purpose hehas recommended a combined chart which would showthe dispositions of planets with reference to all the threeLagnas. Th is combined char t has been ca l led'sudarshana Chakra'. Those who are interested maYrefer to "Brihat Parashara Hora".

Shri Bhasin has stated that a house is to beevaluated with reference to all the three Lagnas. Theoutcome should be predicted from the strongest ofthe three Lagnas or from the majority of the threeLagnas. This is because the dispositions of planetswould be di f ferent f rom the three Lagnas. Forexample, while analysing a horoscope from the Lagnawe find that lord of the Lagna is in the Sth house, avery good position for him. But if the Moon is in the6th house, lord of Lagna may be in the 12th to theMoon. Actually what we shouid do is that we shouldexamine all matters concerning the horoscope withreference to all the three Lagnas, and then decide byanalysing all the results. For example, if longevity ispoor f rom the Lagna, i t is Deergha Ayu (goodlongevity) from Chandra Lagna and fairly good fromSurya Lagna we should conclude that the nativewill have long life. If longevity is very good fromthe Lagna, hnd poor from both the Chandra andSurya Lagnas, we should declare that it would beabout medium. The Lagna is of f irst importancebecause it is fixed for the exact time of birth. TheChandra Lagna occupies the second posi t ion ofimportance as the Moon remains in a sign for about21/z days. The Surya Lagna should be given the thirdplace of importance as the Sun remains in a sign forabout a month. As the duration of a Lagna is abouttwo to two and a half hours and all persons bornduring this period will have the same Lagna. Thenumber of persons born with the sarne ChandraLagnh will be around 24 times more and the numberof persons with the same Surya Lagna will be around700 times more.

Thus we can understand that the birth Lagna is ofprime importance amongst the three Lagnas.


In the horoscope No L7 in which the question ofchildren, that is, the 5th house has been examined.

From the Lagna the 5th house falls in Aquarius thelord of which is Saturn who occupies the 8th from theLagna and 4th from the 5th house. Though Saturn is inthe 8th, but powerfully aspects the 5th his own houseand himself is aspected by Ketu. The 5th house isbetween two malefic influences. The second to it isoccupied by Mars and Rahu and 12th to it is aspectedby Ketu. The Karaka of the Sth house and children, Jupiteris in his own sign and is retrograde with no maleficinfluence on it. Jupiter is, therefore, quite strong. Thustaking all the facts into account itcan be said that the nativemay have one or two children.

From the Chandra Lagna the 5th house falls inScorpio the lord of which is Mars, who is associated withmalefic Rahu. The 5th house is aspected by Saturn andRahu. Thus the 5th house and its lord are both incapableof giving any child. As for ]upiter, though he is in hisown sign and is regrograde, he is in the 6th fromChandra Lagna. Thus there is little possibility of thenative having any child. If Jupiter helps for any child tobe born, the malefic influences which are many, wouldnot let them survive.

From Surya Lagna the fifth house falls in Leo its lordSun is in the Ist house in his sign of exaltation withMercury and Venus. Mercury is baleful lord of the3rd and 6th from the Sun. Therefore, his associationharms the Sun. Association of Venus is helpful. TheSun is also aspected by Jupiter the Karaka for chidrenand the 5th house. The 5th house is hemmed betweenmalefic influences. In the 12th is the weak Moon. The12th is also aspected by Saturn and Rahu and 2nd isoccupied by Ketu and aspected by Mars and Rahu.To sum up the 5th house has one good influence andoverwhelming evil influences. The 5th lord is not verybadly wounded because of the aspect of Jupiter. Onlythe Karaka Jupiter remains unscathed. Taking allthese things into account, we can say that there maybe one or two children but they may not survive. Ifthey survive it will through grace of God providedby the aspect of Jupiter to the 5th house and the 5thlord.

Actually the native had three sons of them twoare alive. Our main purpose of examining the abovehoroscope was to prove our point that outcome willnot always be the same when any house is examinedwith reference to the three Lagnas. The net outcomehas to be worked out by a proper evaluation of theresults obtained from the examination with referenceto all the three Lagnas.

Comments-lt is very painful for me to writeanything for the principle evolved above and provedwith the help of a horoscope of a living person. Theauthor has given two Yogas-the first for the birth ofelder of the twins and the second for the younger one.Now twins are generally born within a few minutes ofthe birth of each other. So the horoscope of both of themwould be generatly identical. So both the Yogas shouldbe present in the two identical horoscoPes. The risingsign and the Moon being in even signs aspected byany male planet also cause twins. Mercury, Mars,]upi ter and the Lagna being in even signs andpossessed of strength likewise lead to a twin foetusbeing conceived in the womb. There will be a trio ofembryos conce ived when Mercury in h is ownNavamsa aspects all planets (this is not possible asMercury can never aspect the Sun) and the Lagna ifthe Lagna and all the planets occupy Navamsasbelonging to dual signs.

Saravali - If the Sun and Jupiter be in Gemini orSagittarius in aspect to Mercury, birth of two maletwins be predicted. TWo female twins will be born ifVenus, Mars and the Moon be in Pisces or Virgo inaspect of Mercury.

In the horoscope No.56 Mercury is associated withthe malefic Sun und it aspected by baturn. Mercury as

lord of the Surya and Chandra Lagnas is an absolutesignificator of skin. Therefore the affliction of Mercuryis of great significance in this horoscope. It will also beobserved that Mars lord of the Lagna being in his signof debilitation and also being devoid of directionalstrength in the 4th house, is extremely weak andindicates weakness of muscles. Comments - I t w i l l be observed f rom thecomments under sloka 76 and from the horoscopesgiven that the author has at t r ibuted leprosy toaffliction of the Lagna, lord of the Lagna, the Moonand Mercury (mainly to the Moon and Mercury). Outof curiousity we went through some of the recognisedastrological works but no where we found the Yogasgiven by the author. But the reasons given by himappear to be quite logical. For the interest of curiousreaders we give hereurrder the Yogas we have foundin the various astrological classics.


Brihat fataka(1) if the Moon be rising in the Lagna, the Sun be

in the 7th and Mars and Saturn be in the L2th and

2nd respectively, the native will be a leper (white

leprosy).(2) If at a person's birth the Moon be in the 5th

Navamsa of Sagittarius in conjunction with Mars and

Saturn or aspected by the native becomes a leper.(3) The same effect wilt happen if the Moon under

the above conjunction or aspect occupies a Navamsabelonging to Pisces, Cancer, Capricorn or Aries'

(4) If Scorpio, Cancer, Taurus and Capricorn

Durudhura Yoga-The native is bountiful. He willbe blessed with much wealth and conveyances.

Ubhayachari Yoga-The person will be an eloquentspeaker. He will have well proportional limbs, will takedelight in everything, will be liked by all, will be wealthyand famous.

(5) As Mars inhis ownsignis inKendra to the MooryRuchaka Yoga (another of the Panchamaha-purushaYoga) is formed. The result of this Yoga has beendescribed as under-

"The person born in Ruchaka Yoga will have astrong physique, be famous, well versed in ancientlore, a king or an equal to king, conforming totraditions and customs. He wil l be of charitabledisposition, wealthy, long lived and the leader of anatrrry."

(6) When lord of the Lagna is powerful and lord ofthe 9th occupies own or exaltation sign identical with aKendra orTrikona, LakshamiYoga isformed. The result,of this has been descibed as under-

"The person will be wealthy, noble,learned, a manof high integr i ty and reputat ion, handsome inappearance, a good rulet and enjoying all the pleasuresand comforts of life."

This Yoga is present in this horoscope with referenceto the Chandra Lagna. Mars lord of the 9th from,Chandra Lagna is in Kendra to it.

It will be seen how the good Yogas have providedenormous strength to the horoscope.


The horoscope No. 68 is that of Sardar Patel whowas the Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister in

the first Central Cabinet of India formed after achievingindependence. His most noted achievements were themaintenance of law order dur ing the bloodydisturbances after the partition of India and the mergerof the princely states and Portugeese and Frenchterritories with the Union of India without anybloodshed.

The Lagna is Aries and lord of the Lagna is in the10th in his sign of exaltation and is associated with lordof the 10th in his own sign. The Sun the Rajyakarakais in his sign of debilitation in the 7th but his debilitationhas been cancelled as his sign lord Venus is associatedwith him. The Sun is a Trikona lord, hence a benefic forAries Lagna. Thus all the combinations for becoming aruler of high dignity are present in the horoscope. SardarPatel could have become the Prime Minister if he wantedbut he respected the choice of Mahatma Gandhi forNehru to be the Prime Minister. Sasa Yoga-One born in this Yogawill commandgood servants. He will be head of a village or a town oreven a king.


Malavya Yoga-The person wi l l have a wel ldeveloped physique, will be strong minded, wealthy,happy with children and wife, will command vehicles,and will be renowned and learned.

The dispositions mentioned above ar"esufficient to make Khruschev, the prime Minister of U.S.S.R.and a world class statesman particularly when there are anumber of powerful auspicious yogas present in thehoroscope as described below-

of debil itation, is associated with or aspected bymalefics, the house owned by such planetsuffers badly.When that planet owns an auspicious house, theauspiciousness of the house is destroyed. But if theplanet is lord of an inauspicious house and is weak onaccount of dispositions mentioned above, he causesVipareeta Rajayoga which gives name, fame, wealth andsuccess to the native. The reasonbehind it is that in thesecircumstances the inauspiciousness of a planet so disposedis almost completely weakened and he becomes auspiciousto do good to the native. The 8th house is the house ofpoverty. If the lord of 8th be posited in the 6th or 12th,be associated with or aspected by malefics and beextremely weak, the signification of poverty of thisplanet will be completely destroyed and he will insteadbecome a donor of immense wealth to the native.

In this context the horoscope No. 71, of a lady whoowns crores of Rupees may be seen.

Here the lord of 3rd (an inauspicious house) is in

the 8th and the lord of 8th is in the 3rd. The lord of 12ththe Moon is combust and associated with Mars andKetu. The weakness of the lords of 3rd, 8th and the 12thin the manner described above caused VipareetaRajayoga making the native immensely rich.

For the students of Astrology we provide otherinteresting facts about this Crorepati to explain why hebecame so rich and influential. If they study thehoroscope from the Chandra Lagna they will find thatthe horoscope has two PanchamahapurushaYogas withreference to the Chandra Lagna, namely Ruchaka Yogaformed by Mars in the 10th from the Chandra Lagna.The Chandra Lagna is aspected by Dhana-adhipati (lordof 11th) Jupiter from the 5th house. There is mutualaspect between Dhanakaraka Jupiter and YogakarakaVenus, the latter being lord of the 4th and 9th from theChandra Lagna. The Lagna is also aspected by Marslord of the L0th, the planet which forms Ruchaka Yoga.There is also mutual aspect between Saturn and Marsthe creators of Sasa and Ruchaka Yogas. There isVipareeta Rajayoga also as a result of conjunction of thelord of L2th Saturn and the lord of 8th Mercury(reckoned from the Chandra Lagna), in the Lagna.Saturn in his own sign in Lagna gives rise to a powerfulRajayoga (according to Brihat |ataka).

Phaladeepika-The author of this work has calledVipareeta Rajayoga by three different names based onthe lordship of the 6th, 8th and 12th house. (1) If the 6thhouse be aspected by malefics and lord of the 6th be inthe 6th, 8th or I2t!i., the Yoga caused is called HarshaYoga. A person with this Yoga is fortunate, has a wellbuilt body, is happy, afraid of committing sinful deedsand conqueror of enemies. He is also famous andpopular.

(2) If lord of the 8th, be in the 6th, 8th or 12th theYoga caused is called Sarala Yoga. The person born in


this Yoga is longlived, strong willed, fearless, wealthy,successful in his undertakings and famous.

(3) If lord of the 12th be in the 1.2th,8th or 6th, theYoga caused is called Vimala Yoga. The person born inthisYoga, accumulates wealth. He is huppy independentand becomes famous for his good qualities and gooddeeds.

"Some of the scholars do not agree to these and opinethat even though the author of the above Yogas hasascr ibed very pleasant resul ts to these threecombinations, yet in actual practice, quite contrary havebeen the results. Parashara does not seem to favour theconception that evils of lordship can entirely disappearas a result of this evil lord occupying another Dusthana."

As we do not consider Phaladeepika andUttarakalamrita as ordinary authorities, we wouldadvise the readers to test the dictums of those authoritiesand the views of these schools in actual practice. Wehave, however, found that persons with very ordinarylooking horoscopes have become very r ich andinfluential because of the presence of these Yogas.

the most beneficiyal Yoga and makes the native

wealthy, famous and longlived. The rationale for this

Yoga is that by the occupationof the 6th,Tthand the

8th-houses from the Moon by benefics, the Chandra

Lagna becomes very strong u.,q auspicious' By such

diJposition of three benefics, Mercury, Jupiter and

Venus, not only the Chandra Lagna is aspected.by

benefics but the houses 2nd and 12th to it also receive

benef i c in f luence add ing more ausp ic ious

neighbourhood to it. In this connection our remarks

under sloka 22 maY also be seen.Comments-Like the Chandra Adhiyoga there is

also the Lagna Adhiyoga. In the latter case the benefic

planets haie to be in the 6th, 7th and the 8th from the

Lugttu. The results of both the Yogas are the same'

Aciording to some schools of thought the benefics

may be diitributed in all the three houses or they may

be in anyone or two of them to form this Yoga' As the

principie behind this Yoga i: to bestow benefic

influence on the Lagna or the Chandra Lagna as well

as on its teft and rigth side, the Yoga will be perfect

when such an effect-is present. Another condition for

the Yoga to be fully fruitful is that there should be no

malefiis in the 6th,7th or 8th. Here is the horoscope


No. 73 to illustrate the above point.Here there is the Lagna Adhiyoga as Mercury is in

the 7th to Lagna and Jupiter and Venus are in the 6th.Although there is no benefic in the 8th from the Lagna

but Jupiter from the 6th aspects the 2nd and 12th houses.So the Yoga is perfect. The native reaped very beneficialresults due to this Yoga. He became a man of lakhs beforehe reached the age of thirty years, although he was froman ordinary family and had begun his career as a clerkin a private Life Insurance Company. Now he even ownsa house of his own which is worth about Rs. 10 lakhs.Jupi ter 's major per iod brought the prosper i ty.Shri Bhasin very rightly claims that Adhiyoga is basedon the'Parshavagamini Drishti' (wvffift gfu), that isaspects on either side of the Lagna or Chandra l^agna. Adhiyoga is not formed when there are beneficplanets in the Lagna or Chandra Lagna or around themalthough every house prospers because of the strenghtof the Lagna (that is, on their either side). Similarly aplanet gets more beneficence if it has benefic planetswith it or on his either side, or in 6th, 7th and 8thto him.

On this very principle are based the well knownYogas like Anapha, Sunapha Durudhura, Shubhavesi,Shubhavasi and Shubhakartari. These Yogas are inrespect of the Moon and Sun and the presence of theseYogas improve the structure of the horoscope and thenative gets long life and prosperity.

Sunapha Yoga is formed when there are planets(excepting the Sun) in the 2nd house from the Moon.The results are self earned property, kingly status, orhis equal, intelligence, wealth and good reputation.

Anapha Yoga is formed when there are planets inthe L2th to the Moon. The results of this Yoga are-wellformed organs, majestic appearance, good reputation,politeness, generosity, respect, fondness of dress andsensual pleasures. In later life renunciation and austerity.

Durudhura Yoga - If there are planets on either sideof the Moon, this Yoga is caused. The result are-thenative is handsome. He will be blessed with muchwealth and conveyances.

According to "Brihat lataka" edited by P.S. Sastri,published by I\a/s Ranjan Publications if'the planet inthe 2nd or L2th be Mars, the person will be energetic,powerful, wealthy and bold. If it be Mercury, he will beskilful, eloquent and proficient in the arts. If it be fupiter,he witl be wealthy, virtuous, happy and honoured bythe sovereign. If it be Venus he will be very rich and asensualist. If Saturn be the planet in the 2nd or 12thhouse from the Moon, the person will enjoy otherpeople's wealth, clothes etc., will engage himself invarious occupations and will be the leader of men.I According to'Phaladeepika'if benefics occupy the 2ndor L2th or both sides of the Sun, the Yogas so formed arecalled Shubha-Vesi, Shubha-Vasi and Shubha Ubhayachari.{f there are malefics involved in this Yoga, then it is calledPapa-Vesi, Papa-Vasi and Papa Ubhayachari.


Similarly we should consider such position withreference to the Lagna. If there be malefic planets in the2nd and 12th from the Lagna, the yoga so formed willbe Papa Kartari Yoga. If there be benefics in thesepositions the Yoga so formed will be Shubha KartariYoga. If there be a benefic in the 2nd from the Lagna,the Yoga will be known a Sushubha. If there be a benlficin the 12th to the Lagna, there is no yoga as the 12th istreated as an inauspicious house.

As already stated above, the evaluation of otherhouses and planets should be done in similar manner.We know we have deviated from the main subject, butit will be very useful for the readers to know the effectsof planets and their influences by aspect on either sideof a house or planet. A house or a planet with beneficinfluences on its both sides gains strength for the good.The results will be opposite if the house or planet issurrounded by malefic influences.

We are inclined to agree morewith the theory of Shri Bhasin than that of Dr. Raman.

Jupiter could be surely responsible for his inappropriatedeeds but involvement of the 12th house, Saturn andRahu is very necessary for the native beingsent to prisonas the 12th house is undoubtedly a very vital significatorof confinement and imprisonment.

The lord of 7th is Jupiter. If Jupiter be of averagestrength, the marriage would normally take place at the


age of 24.Inthis horoscope ]upiter is strong because heis in the 5th, but weak because he is in his sign ofdebilitation. As the effect of the house is consideredstronger than that of the sign, we would say thatJupiteris strong to some extent. Therefore 2years will have tobe deducted from the allotted24years. AgainJupiter isassociated with the malefic, but weak Sun as well withbenefics Mercury and Venus. Therefore the marriageshould take place 4 years earlier, that is, at the age of 18years (22-4). But Mars is also aspecting Jupiter. So themarriage is likely to be delayed by 4 years which bringsthe age of marriage as22. Mars being in Kendra to the7th house would delay the marriage by 2years whichmeans that in accordance with the calculations made sofar, the marriage should take place atthe age of 24. Nowlet us see the effects of the Karaka Venus. There would beaddition of 2 years on account of the association of Venuswith the Sun. There would be deduction of 6 years as Venusis associated with Mercury and Jupiter. Thus the age ofmarriage would be 24+2 - 6=20. The marriage of the nativeactuaily took place when he was at the end of 1.9th year. Inthe method we have employed in these calculations,generally addition or deduction of 2years is allowed foreach malefic or benefic association and addition ordeduction of 4 years to malefic or benefic aspect.

The marriage may never take place if the 7th house,its lord and Karaka all are under malefic influences andare devoid of any benefic aspect or association.

The time of the dawn of fortune should be ascertainedfrom the lord of 2nd, 1Lth or 9th, which ever (amongst theplanets mentioned in sloka 91) yields his results earliest.We should treatthe years allotted to that Planetas the basisfor calculation and then after taking into account theeffects of benefic and malefic associations and aspects,determine the age for the dawn of fortune. Deductionshould be made for the influence of benefics andaddition should be made for malefic influences.

Venus gives his results earliest. We should thereforeexamine the 11th house and its lord Venus. While theaspect of Saturn on the 11th, delays the time of dawn offortune, the aspect of the Moon expedites it. Thus thesetwo effects cancel each other. Venus is strong in the 12thhouse and should expedite the time for the dawn offortune but as he is hemmed in between the Sun andSaturn (by his aspect on the 11th house), there are bothbenefic and malefic effects which again cancel eachother. Venus is associated with Rahu. This maleficinfluence remains uncancelled. Therefore the age fordawn of fortune should be put at 20+2=22 years.Actually the native had the dawn of fortune (qrdcq)atthe age of 21..
