TISSUE VIABILITY NURSE NEWS Association of Tissue Viability Nurses West Midlands Summary of discussion points from meetings of the ATVN West Midlands held 10 December 2003 and 26 January 2004 • Meetings are taking place with VVolverhampton University to discuss the development of a course for sharp debridement and an MSc in Tissue Viability • Elaine Bethell is investigating the risk assessment tools and grading tools used within the region. Elaine has completed a survey of the regional data and activity of the group members collecting incidence and prevalence. A report is available from Elaine Bethell ([email protected]). Development of a procedure and guidelines for sharp debridement is in progress. Some trusts within the region specify that clinical incident forms are completed for patients who have developed pressure ulcers while in their care environment. Incident reporting and exceptional reporting is to be debated at a later date. • An article is to be prepared about the role of health-care assistants in wound management. The group are collaborating with Trudie Young and Menna Lloyd-Jones to develop minimum standards for health-care assistants in wound care. • Caroline Hughes was elected as the new chairperson of the ATVN West Midlands. • Gill Hiskett (nee Henn) was thanked for her hard work as chairperson over the last 4 years and congratulated on her recent marriage. • Lynn Doyle discussed the development of a care pathway for management of diabetic feet. • Linda Russell is completing Department of Health commissioned research on the use of larval therapy for venous leg ulcers. • Gill Hiskett has a competency framework which is used for community nurses studying leg ulcer management. • Maggie Mangan asked for views on using compression therapy for patients with heel pressure ulcers. • Linda Russell identified how she will be using the GRASP system to monitor her workload. Lynn Doyle has information about workload monitoring in her area.
