The foundation stone was laid for the cultural work in the Hohe Tauern Park National Park with Leopold Kohr, the philosopher of ”smallness“, who Prof Winter met during a Celt exhibition in Hallein and thus brought back to Salzburg.

PhilosophyThe return to human standards was Leopold Kohr’s solution for the ever increasing problem of humanity which was constantly striving towards growth.

He recommended forming local structures which are suitable for solving problems on a manageable level by the application of own, spiritual and material resources.

To put Kohr’s theories of regional independency , decentralisation and self sufficiency into practice, the Leopold Kohr Academy was founded in 1986 with the Cultural Association TAURISKA in the Province of Salzburg.

The motto of TAURISKA-culture is: Help for Self-help

This is based on work and own initiatives. Work is something you can do your self.

Quote from Leopold Kohr

In 1993, the New York Times, one of the world’s most famous papers, published an article about TAURISKA and NPHT:

Even is situated in a very beautiful and for the most part untouched region in the Alps, the protection of nature is not the only aim: the TAURISKA project support far more the features of the region and the idea of an own local commercial system in harmony with the natural aspects.

Since the beginning of the TAURISKA cultural work one great concern is to support the language of the region. In addition to numerous readings in dialect, books written in dialect and videos about the creation of dialects and personalities from Pinzgau, a TAURISKA dialect archive was established in Niedernsill.

A people, a region can only survive if it is allowed to keep its own culture and

language.Leopold Kohr
