Associated Events About Diane Simon Madden Vincenzi Dance

1
London Dance International is an annual initiative presented by Chisenhale Dance Space, Greenwich Dance Agency and Independent Dance that aims to provide professional dancers advanced level training opportunities. Over the space of the three weeks Shobana Jeyasingh, Simon Vincenzi and Diane Madden, will lead workshop intensives exploring the movement principles and creative processes that underpin their work. Shobana Jeyasingh Wednesday 1 July – Tuesday 7 July \ 10.00am – 5.00pm At Greenwich Dance Agency Creating Hybrids – Exploring the Choreographic Practice of Shobana Jeyasingh Collaborative creation will be at the root of this workshop, which will involve tasks that seek to tap into the creative potential of the dancer and direct them on a journey to explore movement that feels authentic, not only to themselves, but also to the group. Jeyasingh draws inspiration from life in the metropolis, unmasking collective yet diverse histories; a cacophony of bodies making unusual juxtapositions, which produce both tension and energy, loss and gain. Biography Shobana founded Shobana Jeyasingh Dance Company in 1988. She has produced numerous works for the stage, theatre and camera. Her site specific work includes performances created for Greenwich Borough Hall [with a live web cast from Bangalore, India], the cafe at Waterman’s Arts, Brentford, The City Hall, London as well as 2Step for twenty dancers on the steps of St Pauls performed as part of the Olympic Handover in August 08. Her recent commissioned works include Polar Sequences for Random Dance, Triptych for Canasia Festival, Canada, Pop Idle for Ricochet’s Move Me Interactive Dance Booth, City:zen for City Contemporary Dance Company, Hong Kong and Breach for Ballet Black. Shobana has received two Time Out Dance Awards, three Digital Dance awards, and her work Palimpsest was short listed for the Southbank Show Award. She was also a recipient of the London Music and Dance Award. Shobana was awarded an MBE in January 1995 for services to dance. In May 2008 she was named an Asian Woman of Achievement for her contribution to the arts in Britain. Simon Vincenzi Monday 13 July – Friday 17 July \ 10.00am – 5.00pm At Chisenhale Dance Space The physical resonance of the dissociated voice This workshop will look at the performer as ‘a body for translation’ – through the physical acts of seeing, speaking and listening. Working with written texts and recorded soundtracks – the workshop will explore how these mediums can serve as a controlling force inhabiting the body of the performer. This will be achieved by looking at what the performer brings to the act of re-interpretation and what physical ventriloquism might be! The workshop may also include go-go dancing, wild possessions, forensic lip-syncing and an idea of a show happening somewhere else... The work during this week will be varied and at times contradictory – both intense and playful. It will not attempt to arrive at a conclusion but instead open up unexpected possibilities. Some of the ideas explored during this time are part of Simon’s ongoing project Operation Infinity www.operationinfinity.org Biography Simon Vincenzi is a London based theatre director, choreographer and designer. As a designer he has collaborated on projects with Impact Theatre, Lucy Bailey, Marisa Zannotti, The Cholmondeleys and Featherstonehaughs and Rose English. Theatre directing credits include Heartless (ICA) and The Man With The Absurdly Large Penis (Young Vic). In 1995 he formed Bock & Vincenzi with the choreographer and dancer Frank Bock. This project based company has made works for both adult and children audiences that include Three Forest Dances In A Room Of Wood, Being Barely There I Saw You Too and Breathtaking. Simon’s latest work is a collaboration with the fictional theatre company Troupe Mabuse performing The Infinite Pleasures Of The Great Unknown. Diane Madden Monday 20 July – Friday 24 July \ 11.00am – 5.00pm At Siobhan Davies Studios Before and After Trisha Brown Each day will begin with a physical practice establishing connection and articulation through the joints, qualities of weight and powering from the floor. Improvisation will be used extensively to hone time and space perception and integrate it with deepened movement awareness. Phrase material from Locus (1975) and Opal Loop (1980) will be taught to further develop spatial specificity and broaden one’s range of movement qualities. Finally, various compositional tasks will be applied to this movement vocabulary, continuing to use improvisation to become facile with choices and as a means of making the movement one’s own. Trisha Brown on Locus \ ‘I wanted to analyse, graph the immediate space around my body in an attempt to understand my elusive movement style.’ Trisha Brown on Opal Loop \ Composed of movement that is described as ‘Words that begin with ‘S’, sequential, seamless, silky, sensual.’ Biography Diane Madden has been a member of the Trisha Brown Dance Company since 1980, acting as Rehearsal Director from 1984–2000. Since then she’s reconstructed Trisha Brown choreography both within the Company and at NYU Tisch, Paris Opera Ballet and Scottish National Ballet. She has developed her approach to dance incorporating anatomically based technique with improvisation, composition and performance skills while teaching at the Trisha Brown Studio as well as at P.A.R.T.S. and TILT/Spazio Danza. She recently performed her third collaboration with composer Iver Findlay and sculptor Peter Warren at Danspace Project/NYC and also appeared there in the work of Vicky Shick. The Princess Grace Foundation has recognized her with two awards, in 1986 and again in 1994 for sustained achievement. She also received a New York Dance and Performance Award (Bessie) in 1989.
