REAL WORLD SKILLS JOB MARKET

The UNM-Taos DMA program offers a solid foundation in technology, a rich creative back-ground in the arts, and the communication skills necessary to convey ideas in the digital realm.

Students completing a program in Digital Media Arts develop the skills to pursue careers in graphic design, publishing, advertising, web production, film, animation/3D modelling, television, gaming, interior design, and industrial design. Those stu-dent wishing to pursue the DMA IT area of focus become Digital Media Arts Technicians, capable of entry-level IT and Computer Support Specialist employment with a solid background in Digital Media use and application.

The DMA Design track of the program is designed to be transfer ready for the 4 year program at UNM Main Campus’ Cinematic Arts Program. Concentration courses are almost entirely trans-ferable.

The DMA Technician track, based on the IT Cer-tificate, has been developed in conjunction with other NM community colleges.

UNM Taos students will have access to IT concen-trations offered throughout SUN Online, leading to further industry certifications and perhaps an AAS in IT (e.g., Cyber Security, Health Records, Business Analytics, etc.).

WHAT JOBS CAN I QUALIFY FOR WITH A DEGREE IN DIGITAL MEDIA?

A degree in digital media gives you several career options in different industries. Digital media majors often work in the motion picture and video industries to create special effects, visual images and audio. You may also work for computer software companies and make web sites, animations or video game designs. Oth-ers find work in the government or education industries. Common employers include advertising agencies, animation firms, graphic design studios, newspa-pers, magazines, museums and interactive media design firms.

Your skills will enable you to hold various types of positions within these compa-nies, according to your interests and career goals. Some of the job titles you could qualify for include game designer, animator, sound producer, digital illustrator, graphic designer, animation engineer, presentation artist and art director. If you’re interested in education, you may pursue a teaching position at a trade or technical school. In government, your job might entail creating 3-dimensional imagery and animation for military purposes. New job titles also emerge as the digital media field expands with technology.

The DMA program, faculty, and curricula stress an understanding of modern socie-ty and the attainment of skills related to other cultural products of mass media, such as film, entertainment, and the visual field around us and will explore emerging forms of visual communication, interactive design, and virtual environments upon which students can build their contributions to this dynamic field.

With the growth of multimedia as a tool for both education and industry, the need

for skilled design professionals in this field has risen dramatically.

The Digital Media Arts Program at UNM-Taos will prepare students for profes-

sional work, both in the field of multimedia design and in the emerging industries

that require advanced skills in digital media. Integrating classroom instruction

with production, the program will provide students with hands-on experience in

the collaborative process of multi-media production.

Individuals in digital media should enjoy good job prospects. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment in the motion picture and video industries is expected to rise 14% over the period 2008-2018, which is just above the average for all industries. (www.bls.gov)
