The Douglass Fund Trust was created and funded by the Associate Alumnae of Douglass College on April 15, 1969 for the exclusive benefit of Douglass College and her students. Over the past 49 years, this fund has grown from a modest initial gift of $1000 from the AADC to today’s $42,016,787 (as of June 30, 2018). Last year alone, the Trust provided a distribution of $1,248,592 to Douglass Residential College for student support and college priorities as defined by the Dean (see page 10 for a list of distributions provided to the College last year).

The mission of the Trust remains essentially the same today as when it was established in 1969, with some modifications. Among its provisions are:n The purpose of the Trust is to hold and administer assets that will be

used exclusively to provide financial support to Douglass Residential College.

n The Trustees of the Trust (the AADC President, Executive Director and another Board-appointed member) have the responsibility to manage and control the assets of the Trust. The annual distribution rate determines how much money will automatically be distributed from the Trust.

n A five-member Douglass Fund Committee includes the AADC President, the Dean of the College and three other appointees who are responsible for directing distributions from the Trust and monitoring how the funds have been allocated and used. The Dean determines how the money is to be spent, consistent with donors’ intentions and College priorities.

Over the last 49 years, the Douglass Fund Trust has grown significantly, thanks to numerous donations from living alumnae and friends; from bequests, memorial and honorary gifts from alumnae, families and friends; and from charitable gift annuities, insurance, trusts, IRAs and other deferred gifts. It has also grown through prudent investment practices, professional

fund management and oversight.Contributions to the Douglass Fund Trust have

been either restricted to a specific use, such as scholarships; or unrestricted, which means they can be used as best determined by the College for programs, activities and other purposes. The assets in the Trust are for the exclusive benefit of the College.

Until April 20, 2015, the AADC served as the primary fundraiser for the Douglass Fund Trust under the terms of a 2005 Memorandum of Understanding with Rutgers University and the Rutgers University Foundation. Under a new Agreement that was signed on July 20, 2016 among the AADC and the Rutgers parties, the AADC may no longer solicit contributions for the Douglass Fund or for DRC. The responsibility for raising money for Douglass Residential College has transitioned to the Rutgers University Foundation and the development team responsible for DRC.

The AADC retains responsibility for the prudent stewardship of the Douglass Fund Trust through investment and administrative support as deemed necessary by the Douglass Fund Trustees under the Declaration of Trust. In addition to investment management, these responsibilities include transaction processing, record-keeping and financial reporting functions, as well as other staff support.

In addition to the Douglass Fund Trust, the AADC stewards various smaller funds for the benefit of Douglass. Distributions from these funds also contribute financial support to Douglass and her students, as shown on Page 10.

For more detailed information about the Agreement, please refer to the AADC website at http://www.douglassalumnae.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Signed-Agreement-Between-AADC-and-Rutgers-Parties-Pages-1-to-22.pdf.

AADC Strategic Planning Update

What is the Douglass Fund

Trust?

AADC Board Members Karen Lynch ’79 and Beth Middleton Rizzotti ’89 were recently appointed chair and co-chair, respectively, of the AADC Strategic Planning Initiative. “We would like to thank former chair Kathi Love ’75 for her inspiring leadership,” said Karen and Beth. “Strategic Planning is essential to engaging alumnae and moving our organization forward together,” says Karen, who also serves as AADC Alumnae Engagement Chair. Beth brings many skills as AADC Annual Appeal Chair. “We want to take a deep dive into the current plan initiatives to make sure we stay on track with critical pieces,” says Beth. They provide the following sub-committee updates:

Marketing and Communications – Tina B. Gordon ’72, with staff support from Anne Marie Russo. The goal is to brand the AADC in all our communications and marketing materials consistently under the “Forward Together, Better Together” banner. The team is especially interested in expanding its social media presence and invites new members with expertise in LinkedIn to join. The team is also expanding the use of technology to connect alumnae near and far. This team has successfully completed the project of bringing videoconferencing to the

AADC, which allows us to connect virtually with alumnae everywhere.

Increase Participation outside the Tri-State area – Sharon Gant Yorlano ’79, with staff support from Valerie Hughes Zieniuk ’05. The Regional Connection Groups have been very active. North and Central New Jersey, New York City, North Carolina and Washington, DC, each held successful events. New groups are being formed in Boston and Dallas. Quarterly conference calls with group chairs help planning, no matter where alumnae may live.

Alumnae Benefits – Lynn Bershak Koblin ’78, with staff support from Eileen Cotter. The team is tasked with developing and enhancing benefits and services to active and regular members. Key focus areas this year have been defining what’s most important to members, what added value may be offered to active members, syncing ideas with marketing, donor relations and our system capabilities. All of this

is work in progress intended to lead the team to a greater understanding of what is important to our alumnae in giving and being engaged with the AADC.

Data Team – Janice Ballou ’66 and Judy D. Shapiro ’67, with staff support from Susan Sturgill. This team continues to explore how the AADC can more effectively use its database and technology to maximize its mission. Understanding the needs of the organization and its constituency has been the primary focus. Through active investigation of platforms, the team continues to pursue data solutions to enhance alumnae connection and engagement.

Women’s Life-long Learning Initiative – Under this initiative, the AADC Smart Talks were launched. Co-chairs Karen McLane Torian ’73, Denise K. Busby ’76 and Amanda Hugelmeyer ’04 helped bring us well-received talks about genealogy and managing college debt. Both were held at the Ruth Schilling Hennessy Alumnae Center, broadcast via Facebook Live and archived on our Youtube Channel.

Volunteers for Teams Welcome – Nothing happens without the commitment and talents of alumnae volunteers working alongside AADC staff, so please get involved today.

Get involved as we moveForward Together,Better Together.

D ONORS 2017-2018 A N N U A L R E P O R T I S S U E

Mabel Smith DouglassL e a d e r s h i p C i r c l e

The Mabel Smith Douglass Leadership Circle recognizes the Associate Alumnae of Douglass College’s most loyal and committed supporters. Members firmly believe in the AADC’s core values and support the AADC’s Annual Appeal, which provides us the flexibility to seize unique opportunities which empower and strengthen our sisterhood, to direct funds to alumnae programs and initiatives that

are of the greatest priority, and to support the general administration which allows us to be a best-in-class alumnae organization.

Elizabeth Rodman Voorhees SocietyGifts of $25,000+

A founding benefactor of the College, Mrs. Voorhees also bequeathed her estate for the

purpose of constructing and endowing a Chapel and left specific instructions that the building include a fireplace and staircase for use in the

annual Yule Log ceremony.

Neilson Family SocietyGifts of $10,000 - $24,999

Three generations of the Neilson Family served as benefactors; James Neilson was a notable

benefactor and member of the Board of Managers when alma mater was founded. Mr. Neilson donated much of the land on which Douglass

Campus is located.

Loree SocietyGifts of $5,000 - $9,999

Leonor F. Loree, a Rutgers University trustee, funded the construction of an Athletic Field on the Douglass Campus, and was asked to name

the field. He called the field “Antilles” in memory of the first American transport to be sunk in

World War I.

Cooper SocietyGifts of $1,000 - $4,999

Mr. and Mrs. Drury Cooper owned a home directly across the street from College Hall during alma mater’s first year of operation. In 1919,

the couple gifted the house to the College and Cooper Hall became the College’s second building.

Jameson Young Alumnae SocietyGifts of $300 - $999 (Class Years 2008-2018)

A large part of the land for the Jameson Campus was acquired for the College through the generosity of a member of the Rutgers University Board of Trustees, Edwin C. Jameson. To honor Mr. Jameson’s wife, it

was named the Mary Gardner Jameson Campus.

The AADC’s alumnae initiatives and programs would not be possible without the generous support of alumnae and friends. Each donor is important to the AADC’s continued excellence, and we applaud every contributor in each category. We especially thank the members of the Mabel Smith Douglass Leadership Circle, who are among our most loyal and committed supporters. Names of donors who have

contributed $300 or more between July 1, 2017 and June 30, 2018 are listed below. All gifts to the AADC Annual Appeal and gifts to the AADC in the form of bequests, charitable gift annuities, and other planned and major gifts are included.

We sincerely thank you for your continued involvement and support of the AADC.

Endowed funds are distributed in a manner that is designed to preserve the value of the endowment and generate a predictable stream of available income. The specific use of endowment distributions may be restricted by the donor, or unrestricted.

The donated contributions in a non-endowed fund are utilized in their entirety. When the contributed gift has been expended according to the donor’s wishes, the fund ceases to exist. The specific use of a non-endowed gift may be restricted by the donor, or unrestricted.

Highlights from Fiscal Year July 1, 2017 – June 30, 2018

was launched with informative talks about genealogy and college debt. The annual Victoria Dabrowski Schmidt ’42 Workplace and Professional Development Symposium: “Forward Together, Rising Together,” was held in the fall at the Douglass Student Center and has become a beacon of the ever-growing success of this initiative.

Our lectures featured Dr. Laura Micheletti Puaca ’99, who delivered an inspiring Zagoren Lecture in March titled, “Searching for Scientific Womanpower,” which marked the start of streaming via Facebook Live for alumnae everywhere. In October, our L’Hommedieu Lecture brought Nicholas Kristof, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, columnist and best-selling author, to campus to share his work from across the globe.

Opportunities also abounded to get involved with Affinity

Networks. The AADC Black Alumnae Network (BAN) hosted Emma Andrews Warren ’49, the oldest known African American alumna, who shared her story. BAN also teamed up with our

Young Alumnae Network (YAN) for book clubs. And YAN welcomed all alumnae to its popular Cabin Fever and Sweet Treat Competition at the Alumnae Center and to its YAN-O-Ween for holiday fun.

Our AADC Regional Alumnae Connection Groups continued to gather for Broadway shows like “The Band’s Visit,” at the Chihuly Nights Exhibit at the New York Botanical Gardens and at Philadelphia’s Museum of the American Revolution. Alumnae also

connected at events graciously hosted in the homes of Jennifer Bender ’93, Debbie Lynch ’79, Lois Rabinowitz Steinberg ‘59 and Barbara Little Britt ’65.
