2020 Global Learning Student Awards The eighth annual Global Learning Awards Ceremony, sponsored by the International Division of the Department of Education and Training, was presented online last week. In previous years we would have ventured into Parliament House or Federation Square for the ceremony but restrictions prevented us attending alongside other Government and Independent secondary schools.

The Awards celebrate excellence and outstanding achievements by international school students, recognise Victorian schools for promoting an internationalised education and acknowledge homestay families who provide high quality support for international students.

We were thrilled that Xinyi (Cathryn) Wu (2019 International Student Captain) was named as the International Student of the Year as well as being awarded the Year 12 ‘Academic Excellence’ and Year 12 ‘Community Engagement’ and Year 12 ‘Student Leadership awards. Cathryn is the fifth Balwyn High School recipient of the International Student Award, joining Cynthia Lam, Amy Ji, Lisa Peng and Sylvia Dong as winners of this highly prestigious award. Cathryn’s success in winning all four Awards is unprecedented.

We were equally delighted that Chuting (Tina) Tang (2020 Public Speaking Captain and 2019 Year 11 STEAM Captain) won the Year 11 ‘Academic Excellence’ and ‘Student Leadership’ Award categories and Yuhan (Anna) Jin (2020 Debating Captain and 2019 Senior School Council) was presented with the Year 11 ‘Community Engagement’ award. Anna also received a Highly Commended certificate for her Year 11 ‘Academic Excellence’ last year.

The 2020 Balwyn High School Presentation Night will be live streamed on Thursday 10 December 2020 at 7:30 pm.

School Captains Julia Goh, Ned Lindenmayer

This is the eighth successive year that our International students have been rewarded for their studies, community service and leadership across Year 11 and 12. In all cases the students have achieved outstanding academic results but more importantly they have been committed to fully engaging in our school community as well as with local organisations and charities.

I congratulate again Cathryn, Tina and Anna on their outstanding success and thank the Leadership Team, staff and homestay families for their support of all our International students, never more so than throughout this year of COVID-19. In particular, the superb management of the International Student Program by Grace Yin, Sharon Mu and Siobhan Mahony over the past twelve months cannot be overstated. I am also so proud of the integrity of our Language Centre programs this semester as we engage with off-shore students yet to make their way to Victoria. The students have been remarkable and our staff amazingly agile and compassionate as they have delivered the curriculum and supported the wellbeing of both classes.

We are indeed fortunate as a school community to have such a revered and successful program that benefits all of us.

World Teachers’ Day – Friday 30 OctoberOn Friday we will celebrate ‘World Teachers’ Day’. Internationally World Teachers' Day is celebrated on the first Friday in October. However as this is usually during the Australian school vacation, Australia celebrates the day on the last Friday in October of each year. The day provides an opportunity to draw attention to the important role of teachers within our communities. Celebrated in over 100 countries World Teachers' Day acknowledges the efforts of teachers in an increasingly complex, multicultural and technological society. It is a day on which students, parents and community members can demonstrate their appreciation for the contributions that teachers have made to their community.

At Balwyn High School we continue to strive to ensure quality teaching in every classroom and to support highly skilled teachers who will provide the nurturing and encouragement needed by our students to be successful now and into the future. I thank them all on behalf of our great school community.

Semester 2 Co-curricular Reports Although the co-curricular program has been reduced during Semester 2, where possible students in Years 7 – 11 are able to complete their co-curricular report for Semester 2, 2020.

Students are able to access their Co-curricular Report through their Compass Account – click on the Insights tab and then Co-Curricular 2020 Semester Two. The deadline for the completion of

    Co-curricular Reports is 8.00 pm Tuesday 8 December, 2020.

Safety First – Travelling To and From School All students are reminded that good behaviour and traffic safety are vital every day when travelling to and from school and parents are urged to discuss the following with their son/daughter:

    • All current government health rules regarding COVID-19;• observe road safety rules to and from school each day;• observe all road laws, in particular cyclists must wear helmets; • when crossing the road, it must be done with care and where possible at a controlled

    crossing particularly on busy roads such as Belmore Road and Doncaster Road. When crossing Buchanan Avenue, they must cross at the patrolled crossings;

    • don’t be distracted by listening to music;• always behave responsibly on public transport and offer their seat to older passengers

when appropriate; • have a valid myki card and touch on and off each time they use public transport; and• carry their concession card at all times.

Parents are reminded that Buchanan Avenue (in front of both schools) is a 40 kmh zone. The Balwyn High School neighbourhood is very busy throughout the day, particularly before and after school, and all members of the school community need to adopt a ‘safety first’ attitude. Please

remind your son/daughter to always use the patrolled crossings.

Chaplaincy at Balwyn High SchoolBalwyn High School has had a long and successful relationship with its Chaplaincy Committee and for many years the chaplain has been an important member of the school’s student wellbeing team. The Chaplaincy Committee is committed to the school and this is demonstrated by the support provided through the Second-Hand Books Shop and the Second-Hand Uniform Shop which both provide a great service to students and parents. Verna Woods has been the organiser of the Second-Hand Book Shop for over 30 years which is an amazing effort. Andria Vorlicek and Helen Schweiger, also long-time helpers, organise the Second Hand Uniform Shop and both shops are assisted by active volunteers.

The Chaplaincy Committee raises funds that contribute towards the school having the services of our chaplain, Jeff Lampard. Jeff joined Balwyn High School in September 2019 and quickly settled into his role as a counsellor in the wellbeing team. If you are interested in finding out more about the Chaplaincy Committee or assisting in either shop over the next busy couple of months, call in at one of the shops when it is open or phone the school on 9819 7911. Chaplaincy information is available on the school’s website and it is now possible to translate this information – check the bottom right hand side of the home page screen.

Year 6 Primary School VisitsAt the end of Term 3, students from our networking primary schools had a virtual visit to Balwyn High School. They had the opportunity to view parts of the school and hear from our current Year 7’s about the amazing opportunities on offer for them in 2021. From last week, our 2021 Year 7 Team, including our Director and Assistant Director of Middle School and our Year 7 SLWMs began their virtual primary school visits. At these visits, the Year 6 students have the opportunity to ask questions about high school life and clarify particular aspects like uniform and the canteen. Some of our current Year 7’s also attend these visits, ensuring our incoming students are provided with the student perspective. We are not yet sure what form Orientation Day will take but we look forward to ensuring our 2021 cohort of Year 7 students have the best transition experience possible.

Students Returning to CampusFrom Monday 26 October, all students from Years 7 - 11 have been attending classes on site. It has been wonderful to hear the familiar buzz of students as our school bounces back to familiarity remarkably quickly.

We have processes in place to ensure that our community remains COVID-19 safe. We are operating on a regular timetable that incorporates staggered commencement and dismissal times. Students in Years 10 and 11 will be commencing at 8.45 am and students in Years 7, 8 and 9 are commencing at 9 am with dismissal times for Years 10 and 11 at 2.50 pm and Years 7, 8 and 9 at 3.05 pm.

All students have been informed of the appropriate COVID-19 safe requirements for returning to onsite learning.

    • Unless eating or drinking, students must wear masks at all times including on the Robert Handreck Sports Field or playing basketball. Students should refrain from eating and drinking whilst moving around the school.

    • Masks must be worn correctly covering the mouth and nose. Spare masks are available from sick bay if required.

    • During recess and lunch breaks students should remain in their year level ‘precinct’ unless they are accessing the library, sports field or canteen. Students should not congregate or eat inside unless a wet weather day has been designated.

These arrangements will be reviewed as circumstances change, but we appreciate the support of all members of our community in keeping our environment as safe as possible.

    Senior School Report

    Julien EscuratDirector of Senior School

Farewell to the class of 2020The Year 12 students brilliantly completed their VCE Unit 4 requirements and classes concluded in a genuine atmosphere of collegiate celebration. Throughout the year, the Year 12 students have worked collaboratively with each other and their teachers to prepare for the VCAA examinations. Many students have already attended performance examinations and many others will start with the English and EAL examinations on Tuesday 10 November. Students are recommended to access the full schedule for the VCAA examinations and re-familiarise themselves with the VCE Exams Navigator.

Last week was the final week of high school for Year 12 students. They attended the virtual General Assembly on Wednesday 21 October, which was based on this term’s pillar ‘Learning to Be’. Students dressed up for Celebration Day on Thursday 22 October which was marked by a celebratory breakfast in the school yard and the final tutorials during which they were returned their Year 7 time capsule. Graduation Night occurred via video stream this year and offered a well-deserved tribute to the Class of 2020, honouring them for completion of high school.

We congratulate our Year 12 students on their commitment throughout the year and excellent behaviour and attitude throughout the final weeks of their formal schooling at Balwyn High School. We wish them all the best for their examinations. They have been terrific role models for our younger students and have shown it is possible to enjoy these end of year celebrations in a most respectful, inclusive and positive way.

Arrangements for Study PeriodDuring the revision period, Year 12 students are welcome to arrange appointments with their teachers, either in person at school or via video conference. Should students wish to attend school to see their teachers or use the facilities in the library for study, they must do so in the correct summer uniform. While VCE Unit 4 classes will no longer run, students should contact their teachers directly and organise an appointment time if they wish to meet with them.

    Middle School Report

    Andy SmithDirector of Middle School

Middle School ReportAt the start of this week, we welcomed another step on our path back to normality with the return of Years 8, 9 and 10 students to onsite learning. Year 7 students have had two weeks to acclimatise to the classroom and now we start the same process for the remaining year levels. While the conditions have changed (staggered start times, masks and social distancing), there is no doubt we all know where we prefer our students to be. Our emphasis will be on a slow and steady recommencement to a more rigorous program of learning afforded us by virtue of being back in the classroom. Every student deserves a strong finish to the year with time to reflect on our outstanding achievements in very challenging circumstances.

Last week, our Year 12 cohort enjoyed their final classes followed by a celebration that suitably acknowledged the special nature of their achievements in the face of so many obstacles. They spent their last lesson in their original Year 7 tutorial classes: a lovely reminder of just how far they have come. Back in 2015, a number of the graduating class of 2020 participated in Vox Pop interviews, where they were asked about their first impressions of Balwyn High School and what advice they would give to their Year 12 selves. It reinforced the fact that the six-year journey starts in Year 7, where we establish a shared set of values and sense of community that grows every year that follows. It also reinforced the importance of students in Middle School seeing those through-lines, of understanding what they are working towards. While some may have been forgiven for thinking a virtual Graduation Night for the Year 12 students would be a consolation event, anyone who tuned in knows it was so far from that. Our senior school leaders, both teachers and students crafted a poignant and tender celebration of a resilient cohort and left each family with a special memory of a magnificent night.

Each year, when attending Graduation Night I think about the messages it sends to our Middle School students. It is not a celebration of academic achievement but rather a testimony to

values and approaches to learning that can result in a close-knit community of life-long learners. Whether you are in a mathematics, science or art class – the messages are the same: hard work, empathy and curiosity are valued and rewarded. For nearly our entire Middle School cohort, the most challenging and rewarding years are to come – and the class of 2020 have laid the blueprint for success against the odds.

While we are already nearing the end of Week 4 of Term 4, we have many exciting weeks to go. Here is our opportunity to finish the year

in style. With some time to reflect and heal in the wake of an unsettled year, we hope students will see just how much they have grown. When forced to adapt and change, we find out new things about ourselves. Where some have experienced temporary setbacks, our hope is that there also comes a realisation that through adversity we grow stronger and more united.

Melbourne Writers’ Festival – International Student Storytelling CompetitionEach year Melbourne Writers’ Festival and Study Melbourne enable students to tell their stories of being international students within our schools. This year’s theme is Bold New World and asks students to tell us their vision of a better world (either their hometown or Melbourne) post COVID-19.

This year, our Year 11 International Student Winnie Weng won the first prize at the Victorian High School Category. She will be featured as part of the official Melbourne Writers’ Festival program, including an annual ceremony.

FutureIt is 11:55 at night. I toss around on my hot pillow, like in a long bed full of thorns, unable to fall asleep. I am anxious. When can our life go back to normal? What will our world be like after this crisis? Just as I start to doze off, I feel someone slapping me on the back and saying something. I open my eyes and look up. This is not my bed! Why does the sun shine so brightly in the sky? Where am I? I look around. Queens Street? It cannot be! Everyone should be at home. I fumble around in my pocket and take my phone out. “September 27th, 2025?!!” I cry out. What is going on? Have I travelled to the future? I look up, some strange detectors are whirling around tall pillars, and these were not here before. My heart is thumping. I am excited, flustered, and curious. Everything has become so different. I gather my nerves and walk towards a man who is sitting there drinking a cup of coffee. “Excuse me, sir.” “Hi, what’s wrong?” I point at those pillars and ask, “What are these?” “These pillars?” “I have never seen them before. They look advanced.” The man smiles and says, “These are public health detectors for protecting the health and safety of our community. Do you remember the pandemic? Which happened 5 years ago?” “Yes, that was a very hard time.” “After that pandemic, everyone became more aware of our community environment and public health. Some volunteers discovered these magical devices.” “Magical devices?” “They are very smart. These smart devices will sound an alarm when they detect excessive dangerous substances, they will dial the Health Department, and give instructions to help us which effectively reduces the impacts on our society.” I am surprised, “Are they really that helpful?” “Of course! From then on, there has not been a serious pandemic. Even the occurrence of bushfire has decreased! They are powered by solar power. Very sustainable!” He explains. “Wow, there must be a lot of change after that pandemic.” “Every country in the world experienced a different impact. Fortunately, people are more aware of the significance of sustainability. Not only that, there are more international programs which allow scientists to discuss with each other. Unity makes us stronger. Many advanced and smart inventions have been made to help our world become a greener place. Together, we have created a new world. A fantastic world that is more inclusive and more sustainable.” I thank him and leave.

As I am wondering where I should go next, a car passes me and emits a harsh light. I cannot help closing my eyes. All of a sudden, I am surrounded by darkness. I regain consciousness some moments after. I open my eyes and find myself lying on the ground. It is a dream! I immerse myself into deep thinking. Just like what that man has said, “Unity makes us stronger”. I believe we will overcome all difficulties and our life will soon be back on the right track. This pandemic is not a crisis, but a lesson that reminded us of the importance of sustainability, a chance for us to develop a more inclusive and environmentally friendly home.

    ISSUE 16 30 OCTOBER 2020

Be Well at Balwyn NewsAs we welcome back students in Years 8 - 10 and congratulate our VCE and Year 7’s on how they conducted themselves on campus, we take the time to recognise our collective and individual responsibility to maintain a healthy and safe learning environment.

Many of us will be feeling very excited about coming back to school, while some may be feeling a bit nervous or even anxious. Student Services recognise the importance of being kind to ourselves, allowing time to settle back into a routine and practising empathy. Self-compassion is a great tool that can support all of us.

    Hamish AndersonDirector of Student Services

    Understanding Self-Compassion

What is self-compassion?To define self-compassion, we really need to start with what is compassion.

The two are really one and the same. Compassion is an attitude that involves a certain set of feelings, thoughts, motives, desires, urges, and behaviours that can be directed towards any living thing (e.g. ourselves, another person, a group of people, a society, animals and the environment.)

Self-compassion is about specifying that this attitude is being directed internally towards ourselves.

It involves being aware of our own pain and understanding it is a normal human experience.

Directing feelings of kindness and care towards ourselves are also crucial components of self-compassion.

Why is self-compassion important?Self-compassion can bring great benefits for our mental health and well-being. Particularly, self-compassion can activate our soothe system, which calms our threat system (responsible for detecting potential dangers in order to protect ourselves) and our drive system (that spurs us on to get things done and be active in life). This is important, as otherwise, these systems become overactive and can lead to difficult emotions such as anxiety, anger, and depression.

Why is it hard to be self-compassionate?Being self-compassionate is hard for most of us for various reasons:

The threat system - Our brain is hardwired to shift into threat mode easily to protect ourselves.

Seeing the negative is our default attention bias, so turning our attention to more self-compassionate endeavours might not be something that comes naturally to us.

Early life experiences - We might not have been taught or shown when growing up how to be compassionate to ourselves, and it might have never occurred to us that treating ourselves kindly was an option!

Negative beliefs about self-compassion - Some people may think being self-compassionate is too ‘touchy feely’, and will lead to laziness, self-indulgence or self-pity. However, self-compassion is none of these things, and everyone can benefit from a little more self-compassion.

How can I develop more self-compassion?There are many ways of building self-compassion, including:

    1. Notice that you are struggling/suffering/having a hard time (mindfulness skills)

    2. Recognise that struggling and having a hard time is a shared human experience so connect with those around you

    3. Offer yourself some kindness – such as a gentle reminder that it will be ok, to give yourself some time, or engage in a self-care activity.

National Schools Constitutional Convention 2021The National Schools Constitutional Convention is a part of the Victorian Students Parliamentary Program. At this stage we do not have exact details of the format for the Convention but we have been asked to alert you to the opportunity to submit Expressions of Interest from students who will be in Years 11 and 12 in 2021.

Twenty-five students in total will be selected to attend from Victoria. This will provide an excellent opportunity for students to learn more about the Australian Constitution. As such it is particularly suited, but not limited to, students who are undertaking VCE Studies in either Legal Studies or Politics.

To complete an Expression of Interest go to https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/NSCC2021.

Students can then find an employer to sign up for an apprenticeship to become fully qualified. All students from our school have loved their studies at Box Hill Tafe.

    • Music courses are amazing here – composition, performing, and music industry

Final thoughts…Students who believe that TAFE is not for them are not keeping up with the latest changes in post-secondary education. TAFE courses are unbelievably fantastic. Having attended fashion shows put on by the students and visited Fountains Restaurant, I can assure students and parents that the standard of the education offered at this institute is remarkable. SRC ReflectionAs we begin the final term of this extraordinary year, the SRC has a few experiences to share and interesting events to announce. Two weeks ago, we said goodbye to our School Captains, SRC Presidents and Year 12 Executives. In our final executive meeting, the baton was handed over to the Year 11 members. Our first innovative change this term was our switch our meetings to outdoor settings. As the Years 8 - 10 return from remote learning, this allows the Council to meet in a friendly and COVID-19 safe way. In Term 4, the Year 11 SRC members will lead the Council to bring more even more exciting events and programs to celebrate the reunion of the school community as well as to finish the year with a blast. Here are some things you can look out for in the coming weeks:

The SRC Masked Singer event involves a number of teachers who have recorded themselves singing a song of their choice whilst wearing a mask to conceal their face. The performances will be compiled into an interactive ClickView video. To guess the identity of the teacher, viewers will be able to complete the interactive questions at the conclusion of the video. The first 10 students to guess all teachers correctly will receive a prize for their slick seeking.

The Buddy Program is another one of the exciting new initiatives that the SRC has launched for the final term of this year! In this program Year 7 students who are seeking support will be paired with a Year 10 student who will work closely with them as their buddy, guide, mentor and someone they can come to when they need advice or just to talk! We certainly hope to expand

this program in the future. The SRC wish every student a fulfilling and safe end to 2020.

Louise NoonanDirector of Student Leadership and Voice

Student Leadership and VoiceThroughout the year our student leaders have remained active members of our school community. They have stayed connected with each other and with staff, providing us with regular feedback about how students have been feeling and giving us suggestions on how we can help them be more engaged with WebEx lessons, study together, put on virtual events and also tell us what’s been working for them. This term we first welcomed back our VCE and Year 7 students and already the leaders have been active. In this edition of The Lion’s report on Student Leadership and Voice matters, we have one of our Year 11 SRC members informing the community what the committee has been up to and some of our Year 7 leaders have reflected on experiences relating to the SRC and our STEP program.

Environment Committee and Climate Action ProgramThe Balwyn High School Environment Committee and a group of students involved in the Climate Action Project have hit the ground running during the start to Term 4. Both groups comprise of students from Year 7 to 12 and been keeping in contact through weekly WebEx meetings allowing students to connect whether at home or at school.

Environment Committee UpdateDuring the last few weeks of Term 2, the Environment Committee started collecting ideas for our Redcycle program. This program focuses on the collection of soft plastic rubbish and then disposing it at either Coles or Woolworths. Redcycle is a Melbourne-based consulting and recycling organisation that focuses on the collection of soft plastics. The plan was to have a pilot program running in the Year 12 common area towards the end of Term 3, however, remote learning put those plans on hold. A lot of effort and time has gone into this project by the committee and we are excited to announce the Redcycle program will be implemented at the start of 2021.

Also put on hold due to remote learning was a joint plan between the Environment Committee and the school’s facilities team to plant out the bare slope on the North side of the Robert Handreck Sports Field. We are excited to announce the project will go ahead. We will be using a variety of Australian native plants suiting the type of area. The Environment Committee opens an invitation to students and staff to help with planting on Thursday 5 November at lunchtime.

Climate Action Project UpdateOver a span of six weeks, 15 Balwyn High School climate ambassadors will join over 273,000 students across 128 countries to try and solve the problem of climate change. Each week involves a specific aim. During the last two weeks, we have had the amazing opportunity to meet with schools from Belgium, India and Argentina and share our plans to help combat climate change. It has been an amazing experience getting to understand different cultures, how other countries tackle climate change and understand the similarities and differences that climate change is having on each country. Seeing students and teachers from all over the world undertaking the fight against climate change has resonated with the groups and instilled a sense of optimism.

Thank You and CongratulationsThe Environment Committee would like to thank and congratulate the Environment Captains Caitlin Au and Anton Zangl on their work during this tough year. They have demonstrated their leadership at school and during remote learning, which has impressed everyone in the committee. It is evident that they care a lot of the environment and the current state of the world and we are all keen to see them continue their own journey to help fight against climate change.

Students reflectionsNGV’s Creative Writing Challenge - Dystopian Fiction

In this seminar my classmates and I learnt from highly acclaimed author and academic Kalinda Ashton, known for her short stories, as well as her novel The Danger Game. Among the extensive range of topics covered in the workshop, we learnt about the characteristics of dystopian fiction, the impact of first lines and creating story premises and orientations. Exercises were short but effective, aiming towards creating ideas to connect with chosen themes and topics. With creating story premises, Ashton prompted us to think of current global issues and build upon what-if scenarios. I enjoyed this exercise the most as it received the most input and sharing from the participants, which spurred further ideas for other potential stories. Ashton also stayed after the workshop to answer some burning questions about writing and the industry from some of the 40 participants.

For those interested in workshops like these, the NGV is holding another creative writing workshop in December, this time focusing on character and voice. I recommend it to students interested in creative writing or the creation processes behind beloved characters.

    MusicThe Vistas

The Vistas are a Scottish based indie band that I am now a little obsessed with. I first came across their song "Retrospect" around this time last year and couldn't get enough. During the earlier stages of quarantine, they released their debut album entitled Everything Changes in the End - which I waited for with great anticipation. I am delighted to say that they did not disappoint. What I like most about their songs is how they never fail to put me in a great mood. Their tunes are upbeat and anthemic, so you can't help but bop your head

along. The Vistas have been a great way for me to remove myself from the stresses that quarantine has brought and give an instant lift to my

mood - I strongly recommend that you go have a listen :)

We wish all our students all the very best as they now return back to school. Our concert bands and choirs are not able to rehearse at school, however, the conductors have worked to maintain the connection with all these groups through a range of learning tasks and activities for our ensembles. We are certainly keen for all ensembles to keep working and hopefully return together before the end of term.

One DirectionIn attempts to find comfort in an unpredictable time, I decided to unleash my inner fan girl and return to 2015 by listening to dare I say, the world’s biggest boy band, One Direction. You’re lying if you don’t know who they are but One Direction is a four piece boy band (once was five) consisting of Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan and Liam Payne (and Zayn Malik pre 25 March, 2015). Before going on an indefinite hiatus on 13 December, 2015 (they haven’t broken up okay), the band released five albums, Up All Night, Take Me Home, Midnight Memories, Four (my personal favourite) and Made

in the A.M. Since going their own ways, the boys have all released solo music – my favourite albums being Harry Style’s Fine Line and self-title debut, Harry Styles, Walls by Louis Tomlinson and Heartbreak Weather

    by Niall Horan.

Science Talent Search 2020Science Talent Search is an annual science competition that allows students to use their independent inquiry skills to explore a topic of their interest. Supported by Ms Claire Moloney, this year Balwyn High School had two entries, with both achieving success:

    • Sam He (12E) and Leo Wang (12P) took inspiration from the competition theme (Deep Blue: innovations for the future of our oceans) to design and carry out an investigation into how seafloor volcano eruptions contribute to the development of the ocean. Sam and Leo utilised resources found at home (such as candle wax, water and soil) to conduct controlled experiments that replicated the impact of volcanic eruptions. The experiments utilised Sam and Leo’s knowledge of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and earned them a Merit.

    • Himalaya Joshi (9S) developed a submission for the ‘Video Productions’ section of the competition. Himalaya combined his vast knowledge of science with his technological ingenuity to create ‘The Hijackers’, a video exploring paleovirology. Himalaya’s efforts earned him a Major Bursary, which is the highest achievement possible for the competition. A premiere screening will be taking place later this term – watch this space!

    ‘The Hijackers’ – A Six-Month Mission Grand.

As the new decade ushered in, that was the only word in my mind. Grand.

It had me determined to make my grandest film ever for the Science Talent Search (STS), in terms of everything – from the scientific concepts, the screenplay and my underlying vision to even the level of picturisation, animation and background music.

Well, never had I known that my conceived seemingly far-fetched vision would take a solid six months to materialize… and, before I knew it, I had already begun researching.

Drawing from this year’s competition theme around oceans, I initially started working on the topic of mass plankton die-offs and large-scale schemes to prevent them – something I spent two months on. Which I then scrapped and returned to square one.

It was in March, while perusing an edition of the science publication New Scientist that a light bulb popped in my mind. An article about the largely unheard-of side of viruses fascinated me. With ideas put forward like the interconnected omnipresence of viruses, using viruses to trace evolution and how they can even talk amongst each other, I instantly knew this would make for a perspective-changing science film.

Such was my excitement from the day I conceived this topic – 22 March – that it took me merely three more days to fully develop my ideas. Then, from 27 March till around halfway through May, my fingers hit the keyboard as my ideas flowed out in the form of a screenplay. One and a half months were dedicated to penning my most captivating script, which not only informed, but also aimed strongly at changing the audience’s viewpoint on viruses. For the first time, I had a deeper vision in my films. I was going beyond simply presenting information in a film. I had a persuasive vision.

While I took a “production break” for the following month, I shared hints of my vision with our community in a newsletter article, which served as a “teaser article” for the film. On 13 June, cameras got rolling in the dexterous hands of my dad, my irreplaceable cameraman, who understood my cinematographic intentions and painted them through the camera. Following some outdoors filming as well as my most unique green screen shots ever, the time came to do the impossible.

To edit, animate and create effects I had never tried before… only dreamed of making. These required the industry-grade tool Adobe Premiere Pro, to which I had been exposed a little bit, thanks to Mr. Nguyen, my fantastic media teacher… but not to the extent to be able to produce the effects I had imagined. In the fortnight that ensued, I scoured dozens of online tutorials and drudged through a multitude of error messages to paint my vision. More nights in these two weeks were spent hopelessly failing than truly achieving something.

Or perhaps so I thought. Now that I think about it, my mind had been excessively fixated on negativity, whereas in reality I had almost mastered the software! I’d used effects like masking and key framing, which had been beyond my scope a year ago!

After composing a colorful background score, hitting the export button left me awash with gratitude for Ms. Ahmat and Ms. Moloney, who had facilitated me so generously, Dr. Alonso, my amazing science teacher and Mr. Nguyen, who had formally introduced me to the world of media.

Having earned a major bursary now, I am still awash with thankfulness, as well as for my family, friends and the entire Balwyn High School community.

Year 11 ChemistryYear 11 Chemistry are designing and carrying out an experiment to determine the concentration of acetic acid in two samples of vinegar as part of their Unit 2 Area of Study 3 SAC. Reflecting on this investigation Charles, Easha and Seerat commented that the task shifted their understanding of the mole “…from the abstract to the concrete”. It demonstrated a “…real world application of chemistry, and gave calculated values meaning”. It made them think about the “…importance of precise measurements” and clarified sources of error like “…acid lost to the sides of the conical flask”. “Eight out of ten”.
