OUR VALUES
Aim High Be Respectful Be Resilient Be Responsible
Big Write
Today our students are doing another ‘Big Write’. This time the writing will be based on a video clip with the students writing a narrative story around the title ‘Adventures are the Pits’. We look forward to reading some excellent pieces of writing after today’s ‘Big Write’.
Curriculum Day
Just a reminder that next Monday 22nd August is a pupil-free Curriculum Day. Staff will be involved in learning more about the new Victorian Curriculum, refining our work on Learning Tasks as well undertaking some further professional development around the topic of Dyslexia. We have some very talented staff in Jacqui Rotthier, Dan Wells, Brenda Jones and Jenny Mulqueeny who will be leading the staff next Monday through the planned activities.
ICAS Maths Competition
Earlier this week, we had a number of students from Years 3 – 6 take part in the ICAS Maths Academic Competition. This is an Australia-wide competition where students are challenged on a range of mathematical tasks. Thank you to Mr Nick Besley for co-ordinating this event. We look forward to hearing how the students went on this challenge, later in the year.

Michael’s Supa IGA Community Rewards Program
Yesterday, Year 6 students Poppy Clarke and Izaak Morrison together with Mr Pirouet and myself travelled to Leongatha for the annual Big Cheque Presentation. Thank you to the many Korumburra PS families who regularly use their tag to earn points for our school. We received a cheque for $2270 which was up slightly on last year’s total. We were again the highest earning school involved in the program. We also had discussions with Michael Lorenz (Managing Director / Owner) and John Markham (Marketing Manager) about how we can grow our donation as well as how they could support some of our special projects we have planned! Thank you to Michael’s IGA for their continued support of K.P.S.
Olympic Dress Up Day
This Friday, we are celebrating the Rio Olympics with a special dress up day. Children are encouraged to come to school dressed in either the colours of a particular country or wear the outfit of an Olympic sport. Instead of the usual gold coin donation, we are asking each student to donate a tin of food of some sort. These tins will be delivered to Milpara Community House for them to use in their Food Bank, supporting the families of Korumburra and district who do not have enough food. This really is our families / students helping our community. We look forward to a colourful Assembly on Friday.
Resilience Programs at K.P.S.
Currently, all our students are involved in a number of activities that are aimed at developing their resilience – their ability to deal with issues and to bounce back from things that have challenged them. The children are becoming more familiar with what resilience means and how they can bounce back when faced with daily challenges.

Walking to School
Yesterday as a Year 5 student walked to school, a vehicle pulled up beside them and asked if they wanted a lift to school, given it was drizzling. The student refused and quickly made their way to school where we were able to deal with this situation. This quick thinking student remembered the registration plate of the vehicle which meant that we were able to assist police with identifying the driver of the vehicle. Even though the driver’s intentions were later found out to be purely honourable, it is a reminder to all families to have a chat with their children about being safe when travelling to and from school.
Spot Mr Gray’s Spelling Mistake
This week, we had only 1 person who spotted my ‘mistake’ in the word ‘believe’ which I mis-spelt as ‘beleive’ in my last newsletter report. But there was a second error – this time in the word ‘parade’ which was spelt as ‘parrade’ and she spotted that one too! Well done Sophie McKenzie. Good luck spotting my very easy mistake in this report.
Dairy Assistance Payment
As part of the Victorian Government’s dairy assistance package, students with parents in the dairy farm industry can benefit from a one-off payment through the Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund (CSEF).
Students currently enrolled in government and non-government schools whose parents own, share-farm or lease a dairy farm business; or those people whose primary occupation is working on a dairy farm, are eligible for the payment. The school will need to ensure that evidence is provided with applications and record how the funding has been allocated for each individual student.
Consistent with the 2016 CSEF Drought Response, the CSEF Dairy Assistance funding is paid to the school that the student attends to be used towards camps, sports, excursion and/or other education expenses for the benefit of the eligible student. These guidelines only apply to the Dairy Assistance funding (not the CSEF payment which was paid separately and is subject to CSEF policy). Families who received the means-tested CSEF payment are also eligible.
To apply for the CSEF Dairy Assistance, parents are to complete an application form and return it to our School Office by 18 November along with evidence as required. Application forms are to be retained by the school.
To complete the application form and for more information, see:

VicSpell
Yesterday our Literacy Teacher Coach Jacqui Rotthier took our 4 VicSpell competiters to Wonthaggi for the South Gippsland competition. Unfortunately none of our team members were successful in making it through to the next round of competition however each did the best that they could do on the day. Congratulations to our team which was made up of Year 5 students Curtis Gardner and Riley Sendek and Year 6 team members Chloe Champion and Jarah Morton. Jarah is the first reserve for the Year 6 next level of competition. Thank you to Mrs Rotthier for transporting the students to Wonthaggi.
Breakfast Club
We are now into our second week of Breakfast Club. So far we have had on average 30 students having breakfast at school. We know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and so these students that are having breaky at school are giving their bodies the best chance of being fuelled and ready for a busy day at school. Breakfast Club is happening each Monday and Wednesday morning outside the Canteen from 8:15 – 8:50 am.
