Transcript of Assignment No. 3
This excerpt of the symphony seemingly depicts a dolorous mood full of
hopelessness but at certain points it has hints of being forward looking as
if anticipating something. The composer builds instruments upon
instruments for a climax in the excerpt.
The excerpt begins with a solo flute present a mournful theme that is later
reinforced by a falling pattern of the oboes. The cellos take over the
melody in their middle registers which sounds sorrowful. The oboe re-
enters and is accompanied by the violins in their high registers which
creates a very ethereal and spacious timbre; allowing the solo oboe's
sound to cut through. The cellos and violas re-enters and is further
reinforced by the lower brasses with tenuto chordal-like accompaniment.
This helps give a sense of urgency to the work as the blocks of sound help
to push the music along. The music grows increasingly more urgent as the
violins take over the melody and play repeated sequences that feel as if
they are searching for something more. This is further enhanced by the
flute's solo call right on top of the strings.
