Tutor Marked Assignments
Important Instructions for 2016-2017 Dear Learner,
By now you must have started studying your Higher Secondary Course of the
Assam State Open School [ASOS] under the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council
[AHSEC]. As you already know, planned and continuous study is necessary for successful
completion of a course. We have developed several means and strategies to help you to
learn and be a successful learner. Tutor Marked Assignments (TMA) is one of such
means.
TMAs will help you to : develop regular study habit which is necessary to become a self learner;
know the subject matter better;
get practice in writing responses to questions thereby having a kind of rehearsal in
the preparation for the final examination;
receive feedback and confirmation about the correctness of the response provided by
you;
check your progress in studying the subject you had opted for, so that you can find
out subject areas where you have difficulties and need to put in more effort to learn well;
and
maintain contact with the subject teachers at the Accredited Institution (AI) in which
you are registered and enable you to take appropriate guidance in your studies.
There are three assignments in each subject. You are required to complete the
assignments in your own handwriting in the chosen subjects only and submit them to your Coordinator at your Accredited Study Centre.
We have tried to give you some practice in two types of questions that are usually set in your term end question papers.
The schedule for submission of the TMA is as given below:

Project No. 3: Culturing fruit flies to see the stages of life cycle.
Fruit flies or Drosophila have been widely used for experiments in many laboratories. They
are easy to culture,have a short generation time and are prolific breeders. You may get your own
culture of fruit flies by just taking a ripe banana and an empty well cleaned jam bottle. Keep the
banana in the bottle and place it at a fruit or
vegetable vendor‟s cart or shop. You will find red eyed fruit flies entering the bottle. Cover with a
soft cloth and tie the cloth at the month of the bottle with a rubber band after some flies have entered
the bottle.
Keep the bottle near the window sil for two days. They would have mated and laid eggs.
After one or two days tiny growing larvae will hatch from eggs. After another fews days well grown
larvae will become pupae and then fruit flies will hatch from them. Now invert another empty jam
bottle on the Drosophila bottle. Fruit flies will fly up into the empty bottle. Release them. Now
study the life cycle by observing the happenings in the covered bottle with the banana.

Record the following
1. Date of collection of flies and day.
2. Date of tiny larvae to come out. The first larvae are tiny and called first
instar larvae.
3. Observe them eating and getting fatter and note the duration of larval stage.
4. Note the number of days they take to pupate. Pupae are oval, small, egg shaped bodies
sticking to drier
parts of the inside walls of the bottle. Note the number of days taken for the flies to hatch
from the pupae.

see for yourself how sun rays heat the greenhouse and keep it warm enough for
plants to survive in it.
ii. You shall need some pieces of glass or transparent plastic sheets, Brown cello tape,
cardboard, plastic pipes to circulate water inside the chamber, table fan to cool the
inside.
iii. Now see the figure 35.9 of green house on page 48 of module 6A of your senior
secondary Biology book 3.
iv. Assemble all the parts and build the green house. Keep it in the sun on different days.
Note atmospheric temperature from newspaper and use a thermometer to check the
