Geographical Terms (In your own words give a brief description of each.

Where in the world you find a(n):

Island: Small land mass surrounded by water. Cuba, Jamaica.

Archipelago: Chains of Island. Bahamas, Turks & Caicos

Reef: Ridges of land that rise to near the surface of the water. Often found offshore comprised of sand, rock and coral, reefs, provides good facility of diving.

Great reef, Australia.

Lagoon: Shallow bodies of water, generally found in tropical areas.

Esquimalt Lagoon, Victoria, Vancouver Island.

Cay: A low reef or island composed of sand dune or Reef.

Florida keys, Cayman Island.

Delta: Land built up by silt that has overflowed from rivers as they meet large bodies of water. Usually in triangular shape.

Mississippi Delta.

Isthmus: A narrow land form connecting larger land form in to land.

Panama of Mexico.

Gulf: A part of the ocean or sea that is partially enclosed by a land, especially a long landlocked portion of sea opening through a strait.

Caribbean in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida.

Strait: A channel of water that lies between two land masses; often connects two larger, navigable bodies of water.

Strait of Georgia, between Vancouver Island and Mainland British Columbia.

Cape/ Peninsula: A piece of land that is bordered by water on three sides but connected to mainland.

Hall Peninsula of Baffin Island, Nunavut.

Dune: A hill of Sand built by wind. Great Sand Dunes National Park, Colorado.

Plateau/Mesa/Butte: an area of highlands. Deccan Plateau, India.

Fjord: a long and narrow arm of the sea bordered by steep cliffs: usually formed by glacial erosion.

Baumann Fjord, Nunavut.

Glacier: a large persistent body of ice that forms where the accumulation of snow exceeds its ablation over many years.

Aconcagua Glacier, Argentina.

Waterfalls: A place where flowing water rapidly drops in elevation as it flows over a steep region or a cliff.

Niagara Fall, Niagara. & Angel Fall in Venezuela.

Briefly describe the following:

Ecotourism

“Responsible Travel of Natural Areas” that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of local people.

Give an example of a country that promotes Ecotourism: INDIA.

The Prime Meridian

The Earth’s zero of longitude, which by conventions passes through Greenwich, England. It is used as a reference line from which the longitude east and west is reckoned.
