John Russ, EME 2040, Assignment 1:

    Part II

    1. Do you believe that computers are an education asset or a liability? In what ways has

your education been enriched or diminished by technology? How might you plan tosafeguard your students against dangers listed below?

In all, I believe that computers are an educational asset. Because of computers, technology has enriched education by turning latchey ids into connected ids.!atchey ids are alone and most liely have nothing to do or no one to help them withtheir homewor and learning e"perience. #ith computers, latchey ids can effectivelylearn how to do things in the world that they should now. $sing technology can also beeffective to help students get ready for the future. %ore programs, as well as features

for other programs, are being invented every day. &s a result, they need to now how towor'program these pieces of technology. (o safeguard my students from the dangersof technology, I)d first start by maing the world our classroom. In this way, studentscan feel more lie a family'community, rather than becoming anti*social. I would also putin eywords that would bloc any and all bad websites to prevent taing advantage oftechnology. I would have to teach the students proper spelling'grammar to avoidmisusing the +nglish language as well. +ssentially, this may result in long periods ofe"cessive learning, but it)s worth it since they need to now how to use technologyappropriately. I now it)s helped to learn more about what I)m using.

    Part III

    1. #hat are your thoughts about this proposed idea? #hat are the pros and cons?

I believe that social media should not be used in schools. &lthough there are some pros, the cons outweigh the pros. (he pros of doing such is that it)s easier to reach thestudents, it maes posting updates about things in the classroom helpful, and mosteveryone uses social media more than anything so this maes it easier to see whenthings are due in class. (he cons are that it)s easier to procrastinate on your schoolwor, cyberbulling becomes a -uestion, and inappropriate posts'websites can becomeharmful, which maes the teacher liable for serving time in prison. (here is a time andplace for everything. It can be helpful, but you should do things that could distract youfrom class time by doing it on your own time.

. #hat are your thoughts about this theory for this new generation of digital ids?/ive some suggestions and defend your answer?

I believe that their findings on learning environments is false. 0ome students will havepreferences in learning styles, but it)s the overall lecture of the class period that)smost important. It)s not that a subect becomes boring it)s that you)re not maing itrelative to their lives. 0ome of the -uestions that were ased for this becomes

irrelevant to the lesson or the point of what)s being discussed. I don)t thin thestudents have rewired their brains for multitasing because &DD is something you)reborn with. Doing everything else while doing their homewor is possible, but is notrecommended. 2our coordination would have to be far more advanced than others inorder to successfully pull it off. 3therwise, a couple of the things you were multitasingon wasn)t either done right or it could have been better. By putting the ids in atraditional learning environment, you wouldn)t be conflicting with their learning stylebecause your number one focus in the classroom should be to pay attention to what yourteacher is saying and telling you to do. (hat)s where your mind should be in the

    classroom.

    Part I4

    1. #hat limits, if any, should be placed on teachers) use of the classroom computers? How closely should the school district be able to monitor teacher and student use?#hy?5etwor specialists can see anything and everything on your computer. 0houldadministrative personnel be allowed to monitor your e*mail messages and files on yourschool computer? #hy or why not? 0hould you be allowed to monitor your students) e*

mail messages? #hy or why not?

I don)t thin that there should be any limits on the teachers) use of classroomcomputers. I say this because personal e*mails and I%s may possibly be their only way ofcommunication in certain situations. It would difficult to figure out what should andshouldn)t be monitored for this reason. (he school district should only monitor, ifanything, the use of inappropriate websites or threatening'conspiracy*lie e*mails'I%s.&dministrative personnel should only be allowed to monitor those things if there)s a tipthat they)re wanting to do something harmful. 3ther than that, it)s the user)s businesswhat they send to people and have as files. If I suspect cheating, cyberbulling, orsomething related to that, I should be able to monitor their e*mail messages. 3ther thanthat, it)s their business what they send.

. #hat are your opinions about teachers and social networing sites? #hat guidelineshave you or will you set for yourself when using these sites?

I believe that teachers should have the right to be on social networing sites, but I also

believe that it should be treated separately from their obs. 6or me, I)d mae sure tonot post or send information to these sites about any student, teacher, or other staffof the school. I)d also be careful about what I say and do at school to prevent studentsfrom misrepresenting who you are. &nd I)d probably filter my feeds from inappropriatecontent and such.

    Part 4

    1. How should you handle this situation? Does a way to gather proof e"ist? #hat ne"t?0hould all handhelds be banned in classrooms? If so, how? #hat is your role? +"plain.

(his situation is a hearsay dilemma. 3ther than taing up this matter with the principal, there would be nothing you could do. 7lass is already over and so is the test. In thefuture, I would have to mae sure the students new that they would get a 89: on their

test if they had such devices out in the open, or maing noise, to prevent cheating orsuspension of cheating. In general, I would have to tell them to put away all such devicesin situations lie that.

    Part 4I

    1. 3n your #ord document, ;&(+ the websites in order of their usefulness for theclassroom, ease of use for students, and state your overall opinion. Be sure to identifywhich site you e"plored.

site. I lie Pedago5et because it has videos, as well as worsheets and critical thiningsilled activities, to help the student become more critical. I)d use this site to enhancemy students) minds. &nd I lie (I+0 %agaEine because it gives teachers insights on howto use technology more effectively in the classroom. I)d use this to show my studentshow to use technology efficiently for themselves.

    Part 4III

    1. >nowing that only a portion of your students have computers at home or have dial*upaccess, how can you design meaningful homewor assignments that tae into accountstudents who do not have access to computers or high*speed Internet at home?

6or assignments lie that, I would let the students without internet access at home toprint off three resources at the school)s computers'printers and tae it home with

them to plan out what information should be contributed into their proects. +ither thator they would still print off the sources at school, but they would wor in their owngroup, if woring in groups was to become a problem.

    Part IF

    1. #hat are some other benefits of using the Internet in the classroom? &re theredisadvantages or problems you might encounter in using Internet resources? How mightyou avoid or solve these problems?

(he other benefits of using the Internet in the classroom is that it maes submittinghomewor easier, sending messages to your teachers'classmates easier, and sharingthings to people faster. (here are definitely some disadvantages to using Internetresources. By using Internet resources, the students become vulnerable to plagiarism, inaccurate information, and cheating by using other students) sources'words. (o getaround plagiarism, I)d tell them to cite their references. (o get around inaccurateinformation, I)d have them use to sources approved by me. &nd to get around cheating,I)d tell them to put it in their own words. If the following isn)t applied, they)d get a badgrade and I)d e"plain why they)re getting the grade they get.
