8/10/2019 Assignment #1 - BUS2302

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/assignment-1-bus2302 3/13

Purpose:

The topic of my research is to find out people’s knowledge of the health risks of

extensive computer use, negative effects of computers on the environment, and emerging

technology out there.

I have chosen to conduct a survey on a group of students who all need to use a computer

towards their education. I am hoping to find out if there are any differences in negative impact of

a computer based on the number of hours spent.

Method:

Population: I conducted an oral survey of students from aeVsa(Vietnamese Student Association)

from Carleton University, University of Ottawa, and Algonquin College. The setting is

predominantly Vietnamese students who are in full-time studies within their first undergraduate

study.

How, when, and where: I administered this survey by taking into consideration the privacy of

each student. I did not ask for their name, age, or made them take it online. I conducted this

survey at one of their events (aeVsa Icebreaker) on Friday September 19th

, 2014. This survey

was strictly voluntary and anonymous. I would only write down their answers and later input it

into a data sheet. I have twenty-five entries for my survey.

Analysis:

During class, most students say they check their laptops more than 10 times in a three hour

lecture. The rest is a good mix from 0-10 times.

Most students are now starting to type notes on their laptop and write down notes.

A little more than half believe writing down notes help remember lectures better than typing.

Almost half the students take a break after 10 minutes. They either look, walk, or go do

something else. The rest take longer than 10 minutes before taking a break and a small

percentage takes breaks every 5 minutes.

Conclusion:

The results did satisfy my goal to understand why students use their computer or laptop and

whether or not it had an effect in their environment. I was able to isolate my population group to

students studying their first undergraduate programs. This allows me to understand the

knowledge of these students as they may not fully understand the health risks or negative

impacts of using a computer.

The results show that 18 out of 25 students agree that writing down notes are more

helpful in learning than typing it on the computer. Yet, more than half (13 students) continue to

type down notes instead of listening or writing the lecture down. This could lead to the

possibility that the students prefer the more efficient way to copy notes and prefer to study later.

The survey also shows that nearly half the students take breaks after 10 minutes of using

the computer. The other results are mixtures of taking breaks longer. This is generally a good

thing because 72% of students in my research also believe that muscle soreness and muscle

fatigue is the common complaint amongst computer users. Therefore, they are spending time to

stretch, walk around, or even stand up.

There is a split amongst students for when to put their computer in “sleep mode”. The

highest at 28% put it in sleep mode after 30 minutes. With the majority of students taking breaks

after 10 minutes, putting the computer in sleep mode after 10 minutes would be more ideal.

There is also a new technology called “memristor technology” that can restore the previous

entries that was last used. This technology would help save energy for the environment and

lower health risks for computer users.

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/assignment-1-bus2302 12/13

Some challenges I encountered during this assignment are mainly the population size and

demographic. Having a bigger sample size and random selection of student body would have

been preferred. With the advanced technology questions, most students were unaware of what

nuclear batteries and memristor technology were. Due to the explanation, they were able to make

a better judgment.

Re-conducting my research, I would ask one or two fewer questions about the amount of

time students use the computers. I felt it was a bit redundant and I would further ask about

emerging technology that we are presently using. In all, I was able to find out that students are

aware of the health risks and benefits of not using their laptop or computer. With this awareness,

the students still prefer to do most things on their computers. Question 10 shows that they are

now leaning towards handing in assignments and doing online quizzes. This was an eye-opener

for me as I truly believe if we can learn through memory or writing down our thoughts, it would

be more satisfying than trying to be efficient and using our computers.
