ASSESSMENT INFORMATION
About this marking guide
This document is to be used as a guide to marking the assessment tasks required for this cluster.
This document outlines the instructions provided to the student for each task and accompanying sample/
benchmark answers and any relevant instructions for the assessor.
Assessment tasks
This unit/cluster is assessed in the following ways:
Assessment Task Overview
Assessment Task 1: Questions and
answers
Students must correctly answer all 21 questions to show that
they understand the knowledge required of the units in this
cluster.
Assessment Task 2: Project Students will need to complete both parts of this task.
Part A: Students are required to conduct a risk
assessment of a selected work activity.
Part B: Students must complete a safe work procedure
based on the findings from Part A.
Assessment Task 3: Case study Students are to complete a case study about incorrect hand
hygiene. Students must answer questions on the impact of
the risk and consideration of implementation strategies to
control potential infection outbreaks.
Assessment Task 4: Project There are three parts to this task.
Part A: This continues the scenario introduced in
Assessment Task 3. Students need to demonstrate the
ability to discuss with others the risks, issues and ideas
around better infection controls at the clinic
Part B: Students will need to create a workplace policy
and procedure that covers the findings from Part A.
Part C: Students must present an information session.
Assessment Task 5: Emergency
procedures
Students are to role play the coordination of a simulated
emergency situation.
Assessment plan
The Student Assessment Booklet includes an assessment plan that students are required to read and sign.
Get this signed plan before students begin the assessment tasks for this cluster. Students can use this plan to
declare whether they need any support or adjustments.

Principles of assessment and rules of evidence
Assessment must be conducted in accordance with the rules of evidence and principles of assessment.
PRINCIPLES OF ASSESSMENT
Validity:
Each task has been mapped to unit of competency requirements. Refer to the ‘Unit mapping’ section at the end of this guide for more information.
Assessment tasks are varied and are required to be completed over a period of time and, where required,
on a number of occasions. Practical observations provide opportunities for students to demonstrate both
knowledge and skills.
Reliability:
This marking guide provides benchmark answers for each assessment task to ensure accuracy and
consistency in the assessment decision-making process.
Flexibility:
A range of assessment methods are provided that are relevant to the unit’s context.
Fairness:
Students are required to sign an agreement in their Student Assessment Booklet and state if they have any
special needs or considerations that may affect their ability to complete the assessments. Any reasonable
adjustments that are required to be made to these assessments must be noted in the Assessment Record
Tool for this cluster, in the checklist for the relevant task.
Students are provided with information about the appeals process in their Student Assessment Booklet
and in their Student Handbook.
RULES OF EVIDENCE
Validity:
This Marking Guide provides a set of benchmark responses for each assessment task. Assessors are to
record assessment outcomes for each task in the accompanying Assessment Record Tool. Assessor
observations require the assessor to watch the student complete specific workplace activities in which
they can demonstrate the skills and knowledge required.
Sufficiency:
The ‘Unit mapping’ section at the end of this guide demonstrates how assessment tasks align with unit of
competency requirements. Some units may require the student to demonstrate assessment over a period
of time and more than once. These requirements will be made clear in the relevant assessment task.
Currency:
Evidence for each assessment task will be gathered over the duration of the course. Workplace-based
tasks will allow the student to draw from current workplace conditions and experiences, and students will
be able to use technology, tools and equipment specific to their workplace.
Authenticity:
Students are required to sign the Assessment Task Cover Sheet, indicating that the work they have
submitted for assessment is their own.
Practical classroom tasks and workplace observations by the assessor during placement visits ensure
that the assessor sees the student demonstrating the skills and knowledge required of the units in this
cluster.
Third party reports require third party persons to sign that they have observed the student undertake the
tasks detailed in the checklist.

This is an open book test.
Students need to answer all 21 questions correctly.
Students must answer the questions by writing in the space provided.
If students need more space, they can use extra paper. All additional sheets of paper
must include their name and the question number/s they are answering.
Students may prefer to use their computer to type their answers. Advise students if
they can email their answers as a Word file, or if they must print and submit hard
copies.
WHAT STUDENTS WILL NEED:
Access to textbooks and other learning materials.
Access to a computer and the Internet.
WHEN:
In the classroom or as homework.
WHAT STUDENTS NEED TO SUBMIT:
Their answers to every question.
Note to the assessor:

QUESTION 1
Provide a definition of each of the following terms and an example where indicated. Make sure your example
is specific to the massage workplace environment.
Sample response provided below. Student must provide a definition and one example specific to massage.
Hazard Definition: Can refer to a situation or thing which can have the potential to harm a person.
Examples: Hazards specific to massage work may include poor hygiene, poor infection control processes, abusive/intimidating clients, spills, equipment that has been poorly maintained or is broken/faulty, clients not knowing how to get on and off the table properly, trips/falls hazards (ie rugs, tears in carpet or other flooring etc).
Risk Definition: Refers to the possibility or likelihood that harm (death, injury or illness) might occur when exposed to a hazard.
Example: Medium risk that someone may encounter a physically abusive client, high risk of injury if tables are old or faulty, high risk of a client injuring themselves if a spill has not been cleaned up, low risk of fire from candles etc if placed correctly, etc
Risk control Definition: Refers to the action or control measure implemented to eliminate or at least minimise the health and safety risks as much as possible. There are a number of controls in the hierarchy – elimination, substitution/isolation, engineering, administrative, PPE.
Example: Provide training to staff so they understand and know what to do if they feel threatened or intimidated by a client, ensure fire extinguishers and blankets are available, in the room, check regularly that smoke detectors are working, ensure issues with flooring are dealt with immediately, show clients how to get on and off the table safely.
Risk
management
process
Definition: The process followed when analysing and assessing the severity of a risk and effectiveness of controls. There are five steps in the process – Identifying the hazard, assessing and rating the risk (the likelihood and potential harm), controlling the risk, implementing control measures and reviewing and monitoring the effectiveness of the control measure.
QUESTION 2
The Code of Practice on How to Manage Work Health and Safety Risks is an approved code under which
section and legislative Act?
Section: 274
Act: The Work Health and Safety Act (the WHS Act).
QUESTION 3
Obtain a copy of the Work Health and Safety Regulations. What are the requirements of personal protective
equipment (PPE) under sections 44–47? Briefly summarise the requirements.
Student provides a summary of the required section. A sample response is provided below:
The requirements of PPE in the workplace under sections 44–47 is to ensure that equipment is:
selected to minimise risk to health and safety
suitable for the nature of the work and any hazard associated with the work
a suitable size and fit and reasonably comfortable for the person wearing it
maintained, repaired or replaced so it continues to minimise the risk
used or worn by the worker, so far as is reasonably practicable.
A worker must, so far as reasonably able, wear the PPE in accordance with any information, training or reasonable instruction.
