Dear Members of the Burwood East Primary School Community,

Term 3, from the viewpoint of Principals, is always a challenge as we have to have our head in the here and

now, as well as the following year. As difficult as it seems, planning for 2018 is already well underway. We are

already working on staff and curriculum structures, what the special events might be and what is needed to

continually improve student learning. To support me as I work through this process, I would appreciate it if

families could inform me of any student movement as soon as possible. Of course, we know our Year 6

students will be moving onto secondary school. Our ‘expected’ enrolments inform the school’s 2018 budget

and staffing, so therefore we prefer to be as accurate as possible. Please contact our office ASAP if you

expect your family to be saying farewell to BEPS this year.

This term, I ‘ve been impressed by the effort that our students have put into their learning. Whilst I keep a close eye on academic outcomes, I also look very carefully at each student’s effort and attitude. To me these are the most important indicators of future success and being able to fulfil potential. I ‘m always interested in a students’ ability to reflect on their learning in the classroom and their ability to articulate the what and why of a learning task. This part of the learning cycle, which is known as metacognition, is critically important. Effective learning involves planning and goal setting, monitoring ones progress and adapting as needed. By supporting our students to develop these skills (which can all be learnt) we can improve learning. The key in all of this is to remember that a student's ability to become a self-regulated (i.e. metacognitive)

learner is understanding that one's ability to learn is a skill that develops over time rather than a fixed trait,

inherited at birth. Students who believe that the ability to learn can improve over time have greater levels of

achievement, even after controlling for prior achievement (Henderson and Dweck, 1990). These students set

reasonable learning goals for themselves and have the self-efficacy to choose and use productive learning

strategies. These strategies then result in learning gains. Moreover, students can be taught that their ability to

learn can improve over time; those who learn this simple lesson show increased motivation to learn and

improved grades (Aronson et al., 2002; Blackwell et al., 2007).

Parent Issues

On occasion parents like to ‘take matters into their own hands’ and speak with other parents or other children

about accidents or things that happen at school. Please note that we do not permit parents to question / talk

with /reprimand students, other than their own, without specific permission (from the other parent) to do so.

If parents require information regarding an incident at school they should, in the first instance, speak with the

relevant teacher and then, if needed, with the school leadership. It is much easier for us to investigate

incidents and contact the people concerned and also less of an emotional encounter.

BEPS Effective Communication Channels

Student query/issue= Contact the classroom teacher

School wide query/issue = Contact Darren or Sue

Financial - Administration query /issue = Contact Wendy or Vikki at the office.

The Leader In Me

At Burwood East Primary School we continue to implement The Leader in Me program. Students are taught

leadership skills to assist with their social and emotional development and interactions with others. Our aim is

to facilitate a culture of student voice, based on the idea that every child can be a leader of their own

life. Students develop skills, such as Leadership, Responsibility, Problem Solving, Communication and Team-

work.

The Leader in Me initiative is based on Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. This term we are

working on:

Habit 3

Put First Things First

Work First, Then Play

I spend my time on things that are most important. This means I say no to things I know I should

not do. I set priorities, make a schedule, and follow my plan. I am disciplined and organized.

Parents we would like to let you know about the FlexiBuzz App that the school uses to communicate to the community. All you need to do is choose our school and then select to the boxes, which are relevant to you.

2017 PARENT OPINION SURVEY Online links have been sent to 30% of our families for the 2017 Parent Opinion Survey. The feedback from these surveys is important to the school in tracking our performance and improvement. We do appreciate your time and assistance in completing the survey.

Before School Supervision I would like to remind parents that the school yard is not formally supervised until 8.45AM each morning. There are children who arrive at school as early as 8.00AM – this causes us huge concern because school grounds are not only very cold and dank on these wintry mornings, but VERY lonely which places the children in an unsafe situation. If for any reason your child needs arrive early to school, Out of School Hours is able to service your needs. Please give 1300 105 343 or the office a call.

Emergency details It is the parents' responsibility to ensure your emergency details are updated regularly.

Bike safety Students are reminded to walk their bikes and scooters on school grounds. While on pathways all students must look out for pedestrians and keep a good distance between themselves and other children.

Dogs on the school grounds Could parents please refrain from bringing their dogs onto the school grounds, as per School Council regula-tions. Any dog on school grounds must have obtained special permission from the Council or the principal.

At BEPS Every day counts – school attendance

Daily school attendance is important for all children and young people to succeed in education and to ensure they don’t fall behind both socially and developmentally.

We all want our students to get a great education, and the building blocks for a great education begin with students coming to school each and every day.

Missing school can have a major impact on a child’s future – a student missing one day a fortnight will miss four full weeks by the end of the year. By Year 10 they’ll have missed more than a year of school.

There is no safe number of days for missing school – each day a student misses puts them behind, and can affect their educational outcomes.

I would like to congratulate these students and their families for 100% attendance in Semester 1.

Car Parking @ BEPS With over 300 staff and students in our school community the start and end of our school days are very busy times, with cars, bicycles and pedestrians sharing our space. In order to ensure student safety and re-spect for our neighbours we ask that you refrain from the following actions at drop off and pick up times.

Entering the staff and front of school carpark

These carparks are strictly for staff use only and visitors during the day. It is extremely dangerous to have students walking through the car park spaces. The safest option for collecting your child/ren is to park on the street and walk into the school via designated walk paths.

There is a Drop Off Zone near the hall

Means no parking at all. The purpose of opening this area was to allow parents to drop off their child/ren in the school grounds so that they can walk to the classroom independently. Parking in this area is not allowed.

Parking at the Hall There is approximately 7 car parking spaces at the hall. Please follow the enter and exit signs and park considerately. This is your child’s community, so be patient and respectful. This is a 5 minute parking zone

Doing U-Turns in front of the school This is illegal and highly dangerous to our students who are walking and riding bicycles.

Crossing with the Crossing Supervisor

Please ensure you ALWAYS cross at the crossing with our Crossing Supervisor, even if you are not with your child. The extra few steps to do this teaches our children to follow the road rules and is for everyone’s safety.

Parking over Neighbour’s Driveways

We have built strong community relationships with our neighbours and need to respect their rights to ac-cess their driveways at all times.
