実施概要： ○学生ワークショップ（学生、7月 3日(日)～7月 8日(金)）今年の Student Workshop は、香港科技大学独自のプログラム「 Innovation &

Entrepreneurship Training Camp」 (起業家養成キャンプ )を組み込んだ昨年の Student Workshopとは異なり、フォーラムのテーマ“Developing Sustainable Urban Environments and Low Carbon Economy”に関連した講義と施設訪問で構成されたプログラムとなった。各大学の参加学生が 6 日間にわたり、香港科技大学主催の「ASPIRE Forum 2016 Student Workshop」に参加し、同ワークショップのテーマ“Developing Sustainable Urban Environments and Low Carbon Economy”に関する講義を受講すると共に、環境技術の研究開発を行う企業が多数入居する「Hong Kong Science Park, Green 18」（7月４日）や旧啓徳空港等の跡地に建設された「Energizing Kowloon East」（7月 5日）、世界自然保護基金（WWF）香港が管理している自然保護区「Mai Po Nature Reserve」(7月 6日)の見学を行った。また、シンポジウムに出席し“Developing Sustainable Urban Environments and Low Carbon Economy”に関する最新の研究成果を学んだ（7月 7日）。さらに、ASPIRE リーグ加盟校の各副学長・シニアスタッフの前で、ワークショップ期間中の

“Developing Sustainable Urban Environments and Low Carbon Economy”をテーマとしたグループワークの成果をグループ毎に発表した。（7月 8日）。

○シンポジウム（教職員・学生、7月 7日（木）午前）今回のフォーラムのテーマである“Developing Sustainable Urban Environments and Low

Carbon Economy”に関する講演が ASPIRE リーグ加盟大学の研究者によって行われた。続いてASPIREリーグ研究グラントにより支援を受けている研究グループの研究代表者により、研究内容の説明が行われた。

○副学長への学生プレゼンテーション（7月 8日（金）午前）ASPIRE リーグ加盟校の各副学長・シニアスタッフの前で、ワークショップ期間中の

“Developing Sustainable Urban Environments and Low Carbon Economy”をテーマとしたグループワークの成果をグループ毎に発表した。また、各発表に対して審査が行われ、審査結果に基づいて、優秀技術チーム、優秀発表チーム、優秀プレゼンターが表彰され、本学からの参加学生 2名が所属したチームも優秀技術賞、優秀発表賞を受賞した。

1. Overview of program

The ASPIRE Forum is an annual activity launched by Asian Science and Technology Pioneering

Institutes of Research and Education (ASPIRE League), which constitutes of The Hong Kong

University of Science and Technology (HKUST), Korea Advanced Institute of Science and

Technology (KAIST), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Tokyo Institute of Technology

(Tokyo Tech) and Tsinghua University (Tsinghua U). This year, it was organized by HKUST, at

Hong Kong, China, during 3th to 9th July, 2016.

The student workshop is one of the highlights of annual ASPIRE Forum. It was a week-long

program of lectures, visits and group discussions, with a theme of “Developing Sustainable Urban

Environment and Low Carbon Economy”. Working with students from different universities, we were

required to present group’s proposal of improvement of a sustainable urban environment.

2. Destination and Host University

The Host University of this Year, HKUST, is situated at the Clear Water Bay Peninsula, New

Territories Island of Hong Kong. From the Hong Kong international airport, it took 45 min to arrive

HKUST campus by taxi. The site of HKUST is quite separated from the central urban areas of Hong

Kong, the public transportation that could be used for off-campus commuting are minibus and MTR

system.

In the campus of HKUST which located in a mountain near the sea, we were highly impressed by

the beautiful sea-view from lecture buildings and student resident halls. Another interesting

characteristic is that most of academic building or lecture hall are given a name of funders or sponsors,

such as Lee Shau Kee business building.

The temperature during the workshop was around 30°C with extreme high humidity, which was

normal condition in Hong Kong in summer time.

3. Preparation

Due to the short period of this program, the main preparation for me would be the visa application.

I would like to give special thanks to Sai San in the international Cooperation Division and

coordinator staff in HKUST for providing assistance and contact for my VISA preparation.

4. Forum activities

During 4th to 6th July, lectures are given by HKUST faculties and other researchers combining

aspects of civil and environmental engineering, ecology and management. Especially, some lecturers

gave a talk about specific case study of technology or policy in different country or region, which

were very interesting and stimulating.

In the afternoon, we were guided to visit some special sites where have been experienced original

sustainable development. For example, we went to the Hong Kong Science Park in the first day,

learned many new technologies and how people manage and apply these technologies in this

organization. In the third day, we visited Mai Po Nature Reserve, took adventure by walking while

learning how this reserve continually contribute to ecological protection in highly urbanized Hong

Kong.

Last, we were working on group project during night time for the final presentation in the last day.

Our group focused on building environmental performance, because most of our members have

background and are familiar with civil and environmental engineering. Each member contributed

original idea to our final proposed framework, based on experience and knowledge from different

country. In my case, I tried to illustrate the concept by introducing a specific example of

Environmental Energy Innovation Building in Tokyo Tech. It was later found to be very interesting

and impressive to people from other countries.

5. An episode

Before the final presentation at the last day, we were working on the group discussion and

finalizing slides. Each group worked separately and therefore had different schedule. My group

finished slides before dinner and some members from Singapore and Bangladesh suggested to have a

drinking party in that night because most of people will leave in the next day. It was a little surprised

for me because I used to prepare and practice seriously before final presentation, while some of other

members said they never do the rehearsal even for thesis presentation. At the end, we all agreed to

have a brief rehearsal and practice meeting first, and then drink a little for fun. At the meantime, there

was another group working until very late night, even barely slept for the presentation.

I was glad that finally our group got the best presentation prize and very grateful that my team

mates are always supportive. Actually, the most important thing I learned is how to be relaxed and

confident toward presentation.

6. Cost

This workshop participation was supported by both Tokyo Tech and HKUST. Before departure, a

bulk scholarship of 52530 Yen was provided by Tokyo Tech, mainly used for flight to Hong Kong.

During the program, living expense was excluded and we were assigned into the HKUST student hall.

Food coupons for three meals per day were given, which allow us have meals at specified cafeteria or

food court in campus.

For traveling outside of campus, transportation fees and food cost would be needed, which are

cheaper than that in Japan. I stayed in Hong Kong for 9 days (traveling for 3 days after program), it

costs around 30,000 Yen. For only 1 week of program, 15,000 to 20,000 Yen would be enough.

7. Living arrangements

We were assigned into HKUST student hall, with two people shearing a double room and a public

restroom and bathroom. Roommates usually are not from same university, in my case, I had a local

student from HKUST as my roommate. Only basic furniture (bed, table and chair) and blanket were

provided in the room, personal belongings for bath or laundry were needed for each individual.

8. Language study

In Hong Kong, the language that are often used is Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin) and English. In

campus, English is quite common, our lectures and program management were all conducted by

English.

9. Experiences and prospects for future

The first thing I obtained is language skill. In an environment where you have to speak English for

a whole day (even in the room before sleeping), my ability of communication in English has improved

greatly. In addition, people from different country and region have different English accent, adapting

to English expression that was different with what you were familiar with was a great experience.

Second, many lectures were talking about sustainable urban development from a civil engineering

perspective, which was closely related to my research subject of urban climatology. Although some

topics I might not be so familiar with, the active question and discussion section always stimulated

and illuminated me on further thinking. I believe all I learned from this program can be a great

reference to my future research.

Last, I was also impressed by the different style and characteristics of different university and

different region. It seems that Japanese and Chinese students tend to be polite and diligent, while

students from Singapore and Hong Kong are likely to be more talkative and relaxed. I enjoyed such

diversity and comparison, which reminded me what is Tokyo Tech students’ strength and weakness,

what supposed to be our identity. It is important to have flexibility facing great diversity, however,

such flexibility probably should not be only inclusiveness with courtesy but also self-recognition with

confidence.

10. Message

As a Chinese student, it was my first visit to Hong Kong, where surprised me many times during

this short program. It was very great to know and to explore things that are out of my previous

impression. We always say that we are students majored in science and technology, so we might be a

little different with students in other university in Japan. But during this program, you will meet many

interesting people all from science and technology departments. You can shear your research interests

and learn new inspirations from this program. I believe this chance could also be a fantastic

experience for any Tokyo Tech student!

1. Contents of the Forum

I was selected as one of the representative of Tokyo Institute of Technology for the ASPIRE Forum 2016. The ASPIRE League is an association made up of five Asian leading universities in the engineering field. This year the hosting university for the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). The objective of the Forum is to gather students with different backgrounds and origins to discuss about technologies and engineering.

2. Preparations before the study

Everything was greatly managed by the ASPIRE League representatives so actually there is almost no need for preparations. The dormitory was offered by the HKUST and Tokyo Institute of Technology provided us some amount of money. I tried to reserve the flight tickets as soon as possible in order to save some money. Moreover, before departure I decided to meet with the other students from Tokyo Institute of Technology at the airport in Hong Kong, so we were able to reach the university together by taxi. Since the program lasts only one week it is not necessary to require the VISA.

3. Impressions of the activities

The program started on Sunday with a welcome dinner. From Monday to Thursday we attended lectures in the morning from various professors of the HKUST and usually in the afternoon we had some trips in the city (like to the Hong Kong Science Park) and outside (the Mai Po Natural Area managed by WWF). The lectures touched different areas of the low-carbon economy and sustainable development. On the last day we were asked to give a short presentation in front of Vice-presidents and Senior Staff of the five universities.

4. Personal Growth

The group-work carried out was really interesting. Each group had members from different universities, so there was enough variety of knowledge and backgrounds. Discussing with people from Europe and all over Asia together is completely different from the usual work here in Japan and I learned how much flexibility and adaptability is important to be successful in those situations.

5. Cost of studying abroad

The transportation system in Hong Kong is really efficient and cheap. We moved almost all the days outside the university, which is located quite far from the city centre, without problems. HKUST gave us coupon tickets for Monday to Saturday morning but even outside the food is delicious and cheaper than Japan. Moreover, Tokyo Institute of Technology provided us a scholarship to cover the costs and I was able to pay almost everything through it.

6. Living arrangements

The accommodation has been provided for free by the HKUST. I lived from Sunday to Saturday morning in the dormitory in a double room with another student participating in the ASPIRE Forum.

7. Language

Although in China, almost everybody can speak really good English everywhere. Moving in the city was quite easy since the signs and information are provided both in Chinese and English. The HKUST is really a small world, with people coming from everywhere. The main language in the campus is English.

8. Advice for students

The experience has been really nice and I suggest to the students to apply for it. You can understand how the university is outside Japan and meet people with different backgrounds, experiences and ways of thinking. It is a one-time opportunity, both to study in a top-leading university and to experience living abroad, even though for a short time.

① 参加プログラムの概要

プログラム内容：テーマは”Sustainable Urban Environment and Low Carbon Economy”でした。プログラム期間中に各分野の第一人者の特別講義を受講したり、施設見学をした

りして、最終日にグループ発表を行うというものです。

② 留学前の準備

このプログラムの存在自体を大学の掲示板で初めて知りました。応募締め切りの一週間

前くらいのことだったと思います。それからはかなり忙しい日々でした。

提出書類の中には成績証明書や卒業証明書も含まれていました。これは教務課で申請し

て作成してもらわなければならないのですが、交付されるまでにかなり日数がかかりまし

た。私は時間がなかったので教務課の方に頼み込んで予定よりも早く作成してもらい、ギ

リギリで提出締め切りに間に合いました。余計なことでヒヤヒヤしないためにも、時間に

は余裕をもって行動しなければなりません。

メンバーに選抜されたとの通知が来てからも準備でかなり忙しかったです。特に私はこ

れまでに一度も海外に行ったことが無かったので、パスポートの準備や航空券の手配をど

のようにしたらよいのか全くわからず、インターネットで調べて東京都庁の旅券課に行っ

たり、旅行代理店に行ったりと右往左往していました。また、出発前に大学に提出しなけ

ればならない書類もたくさんあるので、とにかく早め早めに行動しなければなりませんで

した。

留学先ではもちろん日本語は通じないので、英語で会話できるようにしなければなりま

せん。私は英語はそこまで得意ではないので、留学準備と同時並行で英語の勉強もしまし

た。大学の”Open English Office Hour”を利用して、英会話の練習や自分の意見をまとめる

練習をしました。”Open English Office Hour”は大変役に立ちました。英語に自身のない方、

ぜひ利用することをお勧めします。ちなみに留学前の英語の検定試験の成績は、英検準１

級、TOEIC870 点でした。

③ 留学中の活動

(1) 留学先の大学について

私が１週間滞在した香港科技大学について簡単に説明します。

初日に初めて香港科技大学に到着し

たときにまず感じたのは、この大学が

まるで一つの街のようになっていると

いうことでした。大学自体が非常に大

きい上に、宿舎もたくさんあり、学生

や教職員等の大勢の人たちが住んでい

ます。夜遅くまで営業しているスーパ

ーマーケットや喫茶店が大学内に何ヶ

所かありました。また、大学自体が急

斜面上に立地しているため、移動する

際は何回もエレベーターを乗り継いでいかなければならないというやや不便な点もありま

した。大学の正面玄関から宿舎まではエレベーターを３回乗り継ぎ、通路を渡り、１５分

かけてようやく到着するという感じでした。初日は宿舎から正面玄関や授業を受ける教室

までの道順を覚えるのに苦労しました。

私が宿泊した部屋とルームメイトに

ついても紹介します。部屋は２人部屋

で、机・ベッド・エアコンが完備され

ており、非常に快適でした。ルームメ

イトは香港科技大学の大学院生だった

ため、私が滞在している間は大学内の

道案内や香港の紹介などで大変お世話

になりました。

このような環境で１週間のプログラ

ムが始まりました。

(2) 学生交流私の所属している数学専攻では研究は基本的に個人プレーのため、他の学生と交流する

という機会が他の専攻よりも限られています。その分、このプログラム期間中はなるべく

多くの人と話して交流を深めたいと思っていました。そのため学生交流は私が最も力を入

れていたところでもあります。その最初の機会はプログラム初日のオリエンテーションとウェルカムディナーから始ま

りました。自己紹介や自分のチームメイト(チームについては後述します)との交流を深める

ことを目的とした楽しいゲームや、大きな円卓を囲んでの食事など、楽しみながら交流を

深めることのできるような配慮が多くありました。初日以降も講義の間の休憩時間や

施設見学のためのバス移動中など、会

話をできる機会に非常に恵まれてい

ました。特に講義の間の休憩時間は約

２５分間と多めに確保されている上

に、軽食や飲み物も用意されており、

さながら立食形式のパーティーのよ

うでした。右の写真のように、参加者

同士で輪になって楽しく会話をして

いました。私もなるべく多くの人と話

をするべく、飲み物を片手に動き回っ

ていました。今振り返ってみると、トイレに行っている間とシャワーを浴びている間以外

のほとんどの時間は誰かしらと会話をしていたように思います。色々な国の学生と交流している間に気が付いたことがあります。それはかなり多くの人

が日本に興味を持っていて、日本の文化や習慣についての質問が非常に多かったことです。

「○○は日本語で何と言うのか」といった簡単なものから、「日本人はハグや握手をしない

がどうしてか」、「『もったいない』とはどういう感情なのか」というような日本人である自

分でも回答にしばらく時間がかかるものまで実に色々なことを聞かれました。自分の研究

内容について話すことができるというのも大切なことですが、それよりもまず日本につい

て自分自身がよく理解していなければならないのだということを実感しました。また、会話をする上での一つの大きな問題点も発見できました。それは各国独自の英語

のアクセントがあり、何と言っているのか一回で理解するのがかなり困難だということで

す。私自身そこまで英語は得意ではありませんが、出発前にリスニングの練習や会話の練

習をしていたこともあり、そこまで大きな問題はないだろうと思っていました。しかしな

がら、実際に会話をしてみると「果たしてこれは英語なのだろうか？」と思ってしまう程

に相手の言っていることが理解できませんでした。初日は最悪で、どの国の英語にしても

１回では理解できずに苦しみました。日を追うごとに慣れてきてきちんと１回で理解でき

ることも多くなってきました。中国語英語は２日目あたりからかなりよくわかってきまし

た。しかしながらシンガポール英語とインド英語が私にとっては強敵でした。何回聞き返

しても理解できず、最終的には他の人に(英語から英語に)通訳してもらうこともありました。

他国のアクセントに慣れている人はすんなりと理解できていたので、これは私にとっての

大きな課題となりました。これから初めて海外に行くという方は、こんなところに思わぬ

落とし穴があるということを知っておいてください。このような感じで、うまくコミュニケーションを取ることができないこともありました

が、そこでへこんでいては意味がないと自分に言い聞かせながらなるべく多くの人に話し

かけました。結果としてプログラム期間中にほとんど全員と話をすることができ、学生交

流に力を入れようという当初の目的は果たせたと思っています。

(3) 講義、施設見学本プログラムの前半の日程は主に講義と施設見学がメインでした。ここでは講義と施設

見学の内容や感想について述べます。以下の表がプログラムの内容です。午前中は大学内の教室で各分野の第一人者の先生方

の講義、午後は関連する施設の見学、という内容がしばらく続きます。講義のメインテーマは環境問題や低炭素社会なので、私の専攻している数学とはほとん

ど関係がありません。しかしながらそれを理由に黙ったままではわざわざ香港に来た意味

がありません。素人ながらもなるべく積極的に質問をするべく、講義中に気になったこと

や興味のあることをメモしながら聞きました。またどのような分野を専攻している学生で

も理解できるように先生も配慮されていたので授業内容がわからないということはありま

施設見学は低炭素・省エネの建物や自然保護区の見学でした。低炭素・省エネの建物では、天井から

太陽光を取り入れて照明をなるべく使

わずに明るさを確保するための大きな

鏡や緑の壁(大岡山駅前の東急病院の壁

と同じです)が非常に印象的でした。自然保護区では香港に残されている

手つかずの湿地帯やマングローブ林の

中をガイドの方から説明を受けながら歩きました。ただしマングローブ林の中は湿度が非

常に高く風もないため非常に暑かったです。見学を終えて帰りのバスに乗り込むころには

全員がフラフラになっていました。これらの見学の間、ガイドの方への

質問が途切れることがありませんでし

た。各学生それぞれが興味のあること

を次々に質問していたため、非常に活

気のある見学でした。これらの講義や施設見学を通して最

も印象的だったことは外国の学生の授

業に対する積極性でした。「何か質問は

ありますか？」と先生やガイドの方が

言えばどんどん質問が出てきました。

非常に深い質問から先生の発言内容の

確認までとにかく質問が途切れることがありませんでした。「日本人の学生は物静かで自分

から積極的に質問することがない」とはよく言われていることですが、それを痛感しまし

た。私も彼らに負けないように頑張って質問しましたが、彼らの勢いに追いつくにはまだ

まだだと思いました。

(4) プレゼンテーション本プログラムの最後には各大学の副学長の前でのプレゼンテーションが行われることに

なっています。その発表テーマは初日のオリエンテーションの時に伝えられました。テー

マは「低炭素社会を実現するためのアイデアを出す」というものでした。また、プレゼン

テーションのチームも同時に発表されました。チームは全５チームで、メンバーは各参加

大学のメンバーから１人ずつ選出され

た混成チームでした。右の写真が私の

所属したチームの全員の写真です。後

の大学から参加した学生です。プレゼンテーションの内容の相談は

３日目ごろから本格化してきました。

講義の間の休憩時間やちょっとした空

き時間などに６人で集まって現時点で

のアイデアや発表内容の提案などを行

いました。本格的なディスカッションとプレゼンテーション用スライドの準備は本番前日、

５日目の昼食後から始まりました。メンバー全員で宿舎の談話室に集まりディスカッショ

ンを始めます。ここで議論をリードしたのはスイスからの学生の Jenny さんでした。発表

の構成や具体的な内容などの指針を素早く効率的に示してくれて、スライドの大まかな骨

組みはすぐに決まりました。しかしながらメンバーそれぞれが持ち寄ったアイデアをどの

ようにスライドに盛り込むかということで議論が紛糾しました。「自分のこのアイデアを採

用してほしい」、「この内容を入れると時間が足りなくなるのではないか」、「君のアイデア

よりも僕のアイデアの方が現実味がある」等々、次々に意見が出てきました。その過程で

私のアイデアは１つがボツ、１つが採用になりました。夕食休憩や数分間の休憩の他はひ

たすら話し合いを続けて、一応のスライドが出来上がったころには深夜１時になっていま

した。本番ではメンバー全員が数分ずつ話すことになったので、それから自分の担当する部分

の発表の練習を始めました。私は英語に自信がなかったので発表用の原稿を作って見ても

らい、アドバイスを基に修正してまた見てもらい、とチームメイトには大変お世話になり

ました。全員が寝た後もしばらく練習を続けて、気が付いたら朝の４時になっていました。

翌朝も６時に起きて最終確認をしていました。そんなことをしていたら周りの人から「こ

いう間に発表の本番になってしまい

ました。グループ内での私の発表の順

番は一番最後だったのですが、発表本

番では時間が押してしまい、私の部分

は実はほとんど発表できなかったで

す。せっかく準備をしたのに全てを出

し切ることはできずやや不本意な結

末になってしまいましたが、本番に向

けてグループ内で意見を出し合い、一

丸となって準備を進めることができ

たというのは非常に貴重な体験になりました。発表後には全員でそれぞれの検討をたたえ

あい、大変良い雰囲気で発表を終えることができました。プレゼンテーションの結果なのですが、私の所属していたチームが見事 Best Innovative Award を獲得し、副学長から記念のトロフィーをいただくことができました。私も微力な

がら賞を獲得することに貢献ができ、大変誇らしく思っています。このプレゼンテーションの準備および本番を通して最も印象に残ったことは、他国の学

生の議論の進め方や組み立て方が非常に論理的であること、自分の意見をしっかりと主張

しながらも周りの意見を柔軟に取り入れていくバランスの良さ、そして何よりも強烈なパ

ワーを自分の目で見ることができたことです。チームメイト達は自分が自信を持って主張

したいことはちょっとした反対意見が出てきても絶対に自分の意見を曲げませんでした。

それでいて意見の対立にはならずに最終的には全員が納得できる形で決着をつける、そし

てそれに要する時間が非常に短いことに感心しました。

(5) プログラム終了後プレゼンテーションが終了した後には、大学内のレストランで closing lunch が開かれま

した。豪華な食事を囲みながらプレゼンテーションでの健闘をお互いにたたえあいました。これにてプログラム自体は終了となりました。それからは自由行動の時間なので特に仲

の良くなったグループのメンバーとどこに遊びに行くかの相談をしました。日中は近くの

海水浴場で海水浴(どういうわけか全員水着を持っていました。用意周到さに驚きました。)、夜は市街地や市場に繰り出して地元の空気を満喫しました。それでもまだまだ話し足りな

いということで夜に大学の寮に戻ってきて休憩室で談笑して、深夜まで腹がよじれるほど

笑い合いました。これで全ての行事が終了しました。最後にルームメイトにこの１週間大

変お世話になったお礼を伝え、帰国の日の朝は後ろ髪を引かれる思いで空港に向かいまし

た。 ④ 留学を終えて

本プログラムは１週間弱というかなり短い期間のプログラムでしたが、その分内容は非

常に濃いものとなりました。個人的にはこれまでの東工大での勉強や研究すべてを合わせ

たインパクトに匹敵するものだ

と思っています。また、言語も

考え方も全く異なる人々と海外

で協調しながら活動するために

は、自分から積極的に意見を表

明してなるべく多くのコミュニ

ケーションを取る必要があると

実感しました。さらに、プレゼ

ンテーションの準備・本番をは

どのあらゆるシーンで他国の学

生のパワーを感じることができ

ました。私自身、多くの学生と交流するたびに新たな発見や感心することばかりであっと

いう間に１週間が終わってしまいました。香港科技大学の恵まれた環境の中で１週間生活

を共にし、一つの課題に向かって取り組めたことは、今までの大学生活の中でも最も刺激

的なことでした。これを読んでいる皆さんにも本プログラムや他の留学プログラムを積極的に活用して海

外の刺激を受けてくることを強くお勧めします。色々なものを自分の目で見て、勉強して

ほしいです。きっと想像以上に強烈なインパクトを受けることと思います。とにかく勇気

をもって第一歩を踏み出してみてください。東工大にはそのためのチャンスがたくさん転

がっています。

My Team on the first day of forum, formulating the letter of ASPIRE

Student Workshop Report

Preparations First of all, I have heard this program before from a friend of mine, telling me that it was a worth joining program not only to discuss about current issues, but also to further a network beyond boundary. I have a chance to apply and get to the interview session. My background previously was an architecture study. The program offers a theme “Developing Sustainable Urban Environment and Low Carbon Economy”, one of my interest in the topic of urban study within the developing area as a major study in architecture. My previous research is about urban study related to infrastructure transportation; therefor this will be another golden opportunity to enrich my view towards the latest issue in one of the most crowded city Hong Kong.

Impressions of activities The ASPIRE FORUM 2016 I attended presented useful topics on urban environment science and technology. Since my research is to urban mode design, this forum provided a full opportunity for practice and constructive dialogue. The forum is an ideal platform for students to get more interactive for any study because it is an international forum, consists of researchers, education scientists, technologists and industry representatives who are experts in the urban environmental issues. In my opinion, this forum acts as a strategic think tank to enhance a constructive dialogue and collaboration on themes relevant to urban issues among the sister universities and to present the latest development concerning a fast growing population in big city.

In addition, the program was divided into 2 sessions in general: lectures and site visit. Lecture provided an opportunity for both information exchange, regarding research developments towards

urban study and planning, and for detailed discussion of many issues being addressed as part of the development Hong Kong government put on efforts.

Site visit provided a chance to see how far Hong Kong has been developing the area concerned, and also how to let local people realize that urban environment is a matter of every single lifestyle we are living.

Episode of personal growth The forum included students from various countries and backgrounds from all the continents to present their home university. It provided me with a valuable learning experience while broadening my future network of research, study and life experience.

For instance, it was an excellent opportunity to gather together, interact and exchange findings and views during lecture sessions, coffee breaks and dinner. Each of them is very unique with different expertise and excellent experience, which is a motivation for me to develop a network on behalf of further studies or career. Moreover, I consider this program as a great opportunity to get in touch with Hong Kong culture and its educational system. Expenses and Cost The fee spent on this program was relatively small burden, since there was a financial support from Tokyo Tech which cover the flight ticket and insurance. There was no participation fees, and the living expense was zero as the program provided us a dormitory share room inside the campus, which fair enough and very clean. Finally, I would like to thank all the staff from ASPIRE, Tokyo Tech, HKUST and Ms. Sai who had been dealing with us before our departure, make sure we are all well-prepared to leave for Hong Kong. Last but not least, this forum is very interesting and enriches my experience with more information, knowledge and confidence. Also, many thanks should go to my supervisor, Mr. Naoya ABE for his generous support and guidance. Honestly, I miss all the ASPIRE students especially my roommate Mr. Harry, NTU students who are very energetic all the time, and some new good friend.

ASPIRE Forum Student Workshop 2016

7月 3日から 9日に香港の香港科技大学にて開催さ

れた ASPIRE Forum Student Workshop2016 に参加さ

せていただきました。参加学生は ASPIRE League の

メンバー大学の学生を主として、ヨーロッパの理工

系大学の学生も含めた 29名でした。今年のワークシ

ョップのテーマは “Developing Sustainable Urban

Environment and Low Carbon Economy”でした。

プログラムではテーマに関したレクチャー、施設

見学そしてグループ活動を行いました。

レクチャー

レクチャーはゴミ問題や自然保護、香港の環境問

題などを中心に 5 講義受けました。1 講義は 90 分ほ

どで参加学生たちはメモを取りながら真剣に聞いて

いました。今まで他の国の環境問題やゴミ処理の方

法などを聞く機会はなかなかなかったので非常にお

もしろかったです。

施設見学

① 香港サイエンスパーク

1 つ目の施設見学は香港の大規模研究開発センタ

ーの香港サイエンスパークでした。大企業のみなら

ず、中小企業、ベンチャー企業などがこの施設内に

集まり、充実した研究設備のある共用施設で自由に

研究開発をしています。

見学では施設についての説明を受けてから、敷地

内を案内してもらいました。建物には自然光や雨水

を取り入れる工夫や壁面緑化、人の出入りを感知し

て電気や冷房を切る設備など、消費エネルギーを少

なくする最新の技術が取り入れられていました。

② Energizing Kowloon East

２つ目は Energizing Kowloon East というところ

でした。空港の跡地に建設されたこの施設は港とし

て活用されたり、人々の憩いの場として使われたり

していました。

③ Mai Po Nature Reserve

３つ目は中国との国境のすぐ近くにある自然保護

地区に来ました。地区内には沼地や干潟があり、自

然環境が保持されていました。冬になると多くの渡

り鳥がやってくるそうです。

３時間ほど地区内を歩き、バードウォッチングや

珍しい植物、昆虫などの説明を受けました。バッフ

ァローも地区内で飼われていました。非常に暑い日

でしたが、とても貴重な体験をさせていただきまし

た。

グループ活動

グループ活動ではワークショップのテーマである

“Developing Sustainable Urban Environment and

Low Carbon Economy”について、それぞれのチーム

で独自の解決案を出しました。

私たちのチームは香港で大量にあり問題となって

いる“Food waste”に着目し、どのような政策があ

れば飲食店や個人の生ゴミに対する姿勢を変えられ

るか、ということを考えました。メンバーは各大学

から１名ずつの６人で構成されていて、それぞれ出

身国も違ったため、各国のゴミに対する姿勢などの

違いを話し合えました。

発表は最終日に各大学の先生方がいる前で行われ

ました。それぞれのチームの解決案はとても特色豊

かで、同じ議題を扱っているのにここまで違う発想

が出てくるのだなと感心しました。

宿泊施設

香港科技大学のキャンパス内の学生寮に参加学生

みんなで宿泊しました。キャンパスの端にあり、レ

クチャーのある講義室まで徒歩１０分ほどかかりま

した。近くにはビーチがありきれいでした。

部屋はシンプルな 2 人部屋で、他の大学から来た

子と相部屋です。朝から晩まで一緒に生活すること

ができるのでとても仲良くなれました。

寮のシャワールームなどの施設は比較的清潔で快

適でした。また、コイン式の洗濯機と乾燥機もあり、

利用している学生もいました。ヘアドライヤーはな

く、私は現地の学生に貸してもらっていました。

ご飯

ワークショップ中の食事はすべて学内で食べるこ

とができました。朝昼晩それぞれに使える食事クー

ポンのようなものが配られ、学内の指定された食堂

やカフェなどで規定額以内の食事を食べることがで

きました。洋食、中華、東南アジア料理など、様々

な選択肢があり、毎日何を食べようかワクワクして

いました。

朝昼晩の食事の他にレクチャーとレクチャーの間

などにコーヒーブレイクとして、ケーキやクッキー、

春巻き、シュウマイなどの軽食がコーヒーやお茶と

ともに振舞われたりもしました。香港の食事は比較

的日本人の口に合い、おいしくていっぱい食べてし

まうので、ワークショップ中は常にお腹がいっぱい

でした。

自由時間

１週間だけのプログラムでしたが、施設見学後や

発表会の後などに、時間を作って、みんなで大学周

辺や香港中心地などに遊びに行きました。

香港人の子に案内してもらえるので、普段の観光

では知り得ない現地の情報を得られたり、穴場に行

けたりしました。

この写真はキャンパス内にあるビーチの写真です。

グループ発表準備の合間にみんなで来ました。綺麗

な海がこんなに近くにあることにびっくりしました。

涼しい時期にはここで BBQをするそうです。

これは香港中心部からフェリーで行くことのでき

るラマ島の写真です。成果発表会の後にみんなで訪

れました。小さい島でのんびりとした空気感が流れ

ていました。夕日がとっても綺麗な島でした。

他にも大学近くの漁港や香港中心部、中華料理屋

さんなどに行きました。

出費

大学から 5 万円程度の補助金をいただいたので、

香港への航空機チケットおよびワークショップ期間

中の出費はほとんどカバーすることができました。

香港へは日本の LCC のバニラエアから直行便が出て

いるので、それを利用すると便利だと思います。

来年参加する方へのアドバイス

このワークショップはとてもとても楽しく、ため

になります。テーマについての知見が広くなる、と

いうのはもちろんですが、それ以上に海外の学生さ

んたちとの交流を通して、多くのことを学べます。

どれだけ学べるかは個人の積極性次第です。英語

にあまり自信がないとなかなか話すだけでも抵抗を

感じてしまうこともあると思いますが、案外、単語

と身振り手振りだけでも通じるものです。

少しでも海外に興味があると思っている人は、ぜ

ひこのワークショップに参加してみてください。

ワークショップを通じて考えたテロ

このワークショップは日本人７人が犠牲になった

バングラデシュでのテロの１日後に始まりました。

少し早めに香港に着いていた私は現地でそのことを

知りました。犠牲者の中には東工大 OG の方もいた今

回のテロは私にとってすごい衝撃でした。「もしかし

たら自分が犠牲者となっていたかもしれない」「香港

でもテロが起こるのではないか」という不安の中で

ワークショップが始まったのをよく覚えています。

仲良くしていた子の中にはバングラデシュ出身の

子もいました。その子が教えてくれるバングラデシ

ュの文化は色鮮やかで美しく、本当にそこでテロが

起こったのか、と疑いたくなるほどでした。

Just after one day of the terrorist attacks on

Dhaka, I reached Hongkong having a upset and

restless mind with the thought that how I am

gonna answer if people ask me anything about

this incident...thankfully, it wasn't like that at all.

この言葉はワークショップ後にその子が SNS に載

せていた言葉です。ワークショップ中、私たちはテ

ロのことはほとんど話しませんでした。毎日一緒に

講義を受けたり、ご飯を食べたり、遊びに行ったり、

ととても楽しく過ごしていました。そんな楽しい生

活の中でもそのバングラデシュ人の子は自国で起こ

ったテロのことを悲しみ、申し訳なく考えていたの

だとこの言葉から知りました。

バングラデシュは日本人にとってあまり馴染みの

ない国です。もしかしたら多くの人はテロが起こっ

たこの国を危険な国として認識しているかもしれま

せん。私自身もこのワークショップにもし参加して

いなかったら、この子に会っていなかったら、そう

考えていたかもしれません。

テロはとっても怖いです。情勢が落ち着くまでは、

危険と言われている国には行かない方がいいでしょ

う。ですが、テロが起きたからといって、イスラム

教の国だからといって、その国自体が「危険な国」

だと考えるのは間違っています。バングラデシュが

そうであるように、どの国にもそれぞれ素晴らしい

文化があり、人々が暮らしています。それを忘れて

はならないような気がします。

近頃は世界各国で無差別テロが起こり、状況はま

すます悪くなっていっています。私たちにできるこ

とは非常に限られていますが、テロの起こった国や

そこに住んでいる人たちのことを理解するように努

め、思いやることはできるのではないでしょうか。

それが多様な文化を持つ人々が共存し合う社会の実

現への第一歩ではないかと私は考えます。

バングラデシュそして世界各地のテロで犠牲とな

った方々のご冥福をお祈りします。
