Capabilities
Three main capability differentiators– Steady State vs. Dynamic modelling (SS / DYN)– Single line piping vs. Network modelling (SL or NET)– Single phase vs. multiphase modelling (SP or MP)
Assess your needs in terms of these capabilities– See table on next slide

HYSYS Pipe Segment
Part of standard HYSYS Steady State & Dynamics formodelling process piping and transport pipelinesNeeds feed and product streams, plus an Energy streamRepresents “multi - segment” single lineSegments can be pipes (different lengths, elevations, diameters), or fittings

HYSYS Pipe Segment
Limited network capabilitiesFor a single pipe you can specify 2 out of P in , P out & Flow
Alternatively, give all 3 (P in , P out & Flow) and it will calculateLength (for single segment only)For a single branched system of 3 pipes could specify, say, P1 &the 2 flowsCalculates P2Set mixer to equalize pressures, therefore P3 = P2
Calculates P4 and then P5P1

HYSYS Pipe Segment
Limited network capabilities
A typical gathering network will have well flows that dependon the back pressure of the network and a dischargepressure.
Limited network models can be done with Adjust blocks tobalance pressures (use Simultaneous Adjusts)
A network that gathers more than five wells is usually slowto solve. Could do more wells with some flows fixed

HYSYS Pipe Segment
Can model single phase and multiphase– Wide choice of multi phase correlations (see documentation
for details)Can model heat loss in detail– Can estimate heat transfer coefficient with Fluid + metal + 1
layer of insulation– Ambient medium can be Air,
Ground or Water– Alternatively enter a coefficient
for pipe, or for each segment– Or, specify heat loss

HYSYS Pipe Segment
Runs in dynamics, but doesnot consider phase slipOption to use OLGA 2-phaseor 3-phase correlations inPIPE
The pipe modelcan predicttypical slug lengthand frequency

Compressible Gas pipe
Part of standard HYSYS Steady State & DynamicsRepresents single line piping, no fittingsCan only model single phase vapour
Can model the momentum balance
– Suitable for pressure surge calculationsSimple heat loss model
There is no reason to use this in Steady State– The pipe segment will do a better job– Only use in steady state as a start for dynamic model
Only do this if in dynamics the momentum balance is required

Pipe included in valve
Only works in dynamics
Used to add piping pressure loss with minimal effort
No multiphase correlations
No elevation profile possible

PIPESYS
Third party product fromNeotech (SPT Group)
Represents single line pipingand includes fittings
– No advantage over pipesegment for in-plant piping(e.g. less fittings)
– Alternative to PIPE formodelling transmissionpipelines
Not in main unit operationpalette
Use Flowsheet > AddOperation… then selectExtensions and PIPESYS

PIPESYS
More flexibility in the definition of the piping elevationprofile compared to Pipe segment
Can specify:– Horizontal distance
along pipe fromOrigin
– Run for each pipe– Length of each pipe
And– Rise (-ve = fall)– Elevation relative to
Origin– Angle of pipe
In PIPESYS, com-pressors, pumps, heaters, coolers can also be included in the pipe run.

PIPESYS
Can model single phase and multiphase– Wide choice of multi phase correlations– Can specify different correlations for horizontal, vertical and
inclined flow (currently not in Pipe Segment, will be in V7.3)
Can model heat loss in detail
– Fluid + metal + multiple layers of insulationSlug size estimation for pigging operationsPipeline cool down calculation for shut in pipe
Can also use OLGAS correlations in PIPESYSSame network limitations as standard HYSYS PIPE unit
