Queridos socios

Este es el comienzo de un nuevo año de trabajo, deamistad y de amor a las rosas.

El principio de todos los desafíos es algo que nos traezozobra pero el trabajo en equipo nos da la tranquili-dad y confianza de que lograremos nuestros anhelosy el desafío será al fin, el placer de alcanzar nuestrosobjetivos.Aspiramos a un trabajo en equipo, somos todosresponsables de elevar muy alto el nombre de laAsociación Uruguaya de la Rosa. Me siento acompa-ñada en mi tarea (Comisión Directiva, socios yamigos) la pasión compartida por la rosa hará quejuntos alcancemos el éxito.Deseamos que éste sea un año de amistad, derealizaciones y de diálogo.Esta Asociación se enriquece dialogando; no somosajenos a esta realidad y les pido que sea en esteámbito que planteen sus dudas, sus cuestionamientosy preguntas.Este es el lugar adecuado entre amigos que tenemoscomo meta una Asociación Uruguaya de la Rosapujante y dinámica.Agradezco a ustedes que me eligieron para ocupareste cargo que me honra y me llena de satisfacción yorgullo.

East Branch of the Uruguayan Rose Societymeets at the Chacra San Pedro or at the Liga deFomento in Parada 1, Punta del Este,Maldonado.During 2013 we had several lectures“Recognizing roses”, “Floribundas, Rugosasand English Roses” “Display of roses” “Practicalpruning” and “Classifying roses for the Show”.We took part in Trevor Nottle`s conference.We travelled to Estancia Las Rosas and visitedSan Pedro del Timote, an unforgettable trip!!!Our Show received very good reports from thejudges judging it highlighting the Rose Baskets.We ended the year with a meeting withmembers and their families.

En abril nos reunimos en el Museo LacanGuazú, después de disfrutar de las vacaciones.Fue nuestra conferencista Rosemarie quien noshizo una “Introducción a las Rosas”.Tuvimos una concurrencia muy linda con sociasnuevas, donde llevamos distintos ejemplares derosas para identificarlas.En mayo nos visitó Jean Pierre Hounie, conmuchos gajitos y su disertación “El trabajo delaño con las rosas”.Junio, nos visita Elba Simpson contándonostoda su experiencia con el cultivo de rosas ymostrándonos fotos del viaje realizado aEspaña.En julio concurrimos todo el grupo al estableci-miento rural de una de nuestras socias, donde elArq. Luis Carrau nos dio una charla y clasepráctica de poda de rosales.En agosto tuvimos la grata visita de MaritaLindner con la conferencia “Agua y Abono”.La charla fue acompañada de imágenes derosales muy bellos.En setiembre nos reunimos todas las socias yrealizamos una mesa redonda “Preparando laexposición”, donde las socias con más expe-riencia invitábamos a exponer a las nuevassocias.El 18 de octubre tuvimos nuestra segundaexposición titulada “Su majestad La Rosa”.Fue un día muy especial donde el público nosacompañó gratamente.El 30 de octubre visitamos a Rosemarie en PasoCorrentino, donde nos recibió con muchaalegría, recorrimos el jardín, luego almorzamosy realizamos nuestra evaluación de la exposi-ción y cambio de autoridades.En noviembre realizamos la visita a la exposi-ción en el LATU por los 30 años de la AUR.Regresamos enriquecidas en conocimiento detantas variedades, color y belleza.

On April we met at the Lacan Guazú Museum,after enjoying our holidays.Rosemarie was our speaker and gave us an“Introduction to Roses”.

Jean Pierre Hounie visited us in May sharingswaps and lectured us on “The year´s work withroses”In June Elba Simpson visited us to tell us herexperience with growing roses and showedpictures of her trip to Spain.In July the group went to the farm of one of ourmembers where Arch. Luis Carrau gave us alecture and practical class on pruning rosebushes.In August we had the pleasant visit of MaritaLindner.She gave a lecture on “Water and Fertilization”,very beautiful rose photos illustrated the lecture.In September we discussed the preparation ofthe Show with the members and invited the newones to exhibit.On October 18th we had our second showcalled “Her Majesty The Rose”. It was a veryspecial day with a lot of public.On October 30th we visited Rosemarie´s farmat Paso Correntino where we were greeted withgreat joy, we toured the gardens, had lunch,discussed our show and changed authorities.In November we visited the Show at the LATUcelebrating the 30 years of the AUR. Wereturned full of knowledge of so many varieties,colour and beauty.

We had a very nice turnout with new membersand brought different roses for identification.

No pudimos cumplir con todas las actividadesprogramadas para el año debido a las grandesdistancias para movilizar a los conferencistas ysocios, pero estamos trabajando para mejorarestos aspectos.Los eventos en negrita que quedaronpendientes serán cumplidos en el correr delpresente año.No obstante este problema, las reuniones sonsuper interesantes y motivadoras, tuvimosintercambio de esquejes que a la fecha hanflorecido.

Lo entusiasmé para que fuera a laHeritage Conference de Sangerhausen y final-mente decidió ir. Mientras visitaba el famosoRosedal, se percató que no estaban allí muchos delos rosales que los inmigrantes europeos habíantraído a Sudamérica en el siglo XIX, entoncesofreció a las autoridades que podía mandar estacasa ese magnífico Museo de la Rosa que esSangerhausen y fue muy apreciado. Ahora acabade aplicar para que "Rosas Antiguas en Argentina"sea Miembro Asociado de la WFRS.Rafael Maino va a venir a Uruguay el 19 y 20 deagosto a dar charlas, no se lo pierdan!Considero que es muy importante asistir a lasdiferentes Convenciones , donde uno intercambiainformación y conoce gente de todas partes delmundo, que comparten la misma pasión:la Rosa…Ese es el Espíritu de la Rosa!

grown today in our country which would be thesame as Spray Cécile Brünner, Polyantha (Howard1941).- In April 2013 I went to Patagonia on holidays,where some friends introduced me to RafaelMaino, who lives part of the year in Bariloche andis an expert in Old Garden Roses. I encouragedhim to attend the International Rose HeritageConference in Sangerhausen and finally hedecided to go. While he visited the famousRosarium, he noticed that many of the varietiesthat the European immigrants had brought toSouth America in the 19th C were not there, so heoffered to send cuttings to that wonderful Museumof the Rose and it was very much appreciated.Now he applied for Associate Membership fromthe "Heritage Rose Group of Argentina".Rafael Maino will come to Uruguay on the 19thand 20th August to give lectures, don't miss them!It is very important to attend different Conventionswhere you interchange information and get toknow people from all over the world, who sharethe same passion: Roses …That is The Spirit of the Rose!

Durante los dos últimos años se llevo a cabo unnuevo Curso de Jueces de Rosicultura que finalizoen agosto del 2013 con los últimos exámenes y enel que intervinieron 22 personas de Montevideo,Maldonado, Soriano y Tacuarembó.Para inscribirse en el curso era necesario tener 3años de antigüedad en la Asociación, ser unexhibidor exitoso y obtener 3 primeros premiosantes de recibir el titulo de Juez.Además de aprobar un examen práctico juzgandoExposiciones como estudiantes y luegoExposiciones como verdaderos jueces, al final delsegundo año presentaron monografías de unexcelente nivel sobre un tema especifico de laRosa. También tuvieron un examen teórico queconstaba de 900 preguntas con respuestasmúltiples, que cubrían temas de Ética,Presentación, Clasificación de variedades,Sanidad, etc.El examen es aprobado con un promedio de 75%,pero la nota más baja fue de 80% y la más alta de98%.Estoy feliz de haber sido responsable de esteSegundo Curso de Jueces. Contamos con lainvalorable ayuda de otras Jueces Nacionales yArgentinas que brindaron clases muy didácticasque fueron muy apreciadas por los estudiantes.

A new Course for the preparation of New Judgesin Rose Culture was held during the last two years.It came to an end last August 2013 with the lastExams. Twenty persons finished the Coursesuccessfully. To be able to take the Course it wasnecessary to be a member of the Uruguayan RoseSociety for three years and to have obtained threefirst prizes in Exhibitions.The Final exams consisted of: successfullycompleting a 90 multiple choice questions thatcovered Ethics, Presentation, Classification ofRoses, etc, approving a practical examinationwhich consisted Judging in mock exhibits andaierwards in actual exhibits, and, at last, presentinga written study on a chosen theme on Roses. Anaverage of 75% was required to pass. The lowestlevel was 80, the highest being 98%.As responsible for the organization of this SecondCourse, I am very happy with the results. We wereprivileged by the invaluable help of National andArgentine Judges. They gave very didactic classes,much appreciated by the students.The follow up of the Course will consist of four

¿Al podar o descabezar sus rosas no se hanencontrado alguna vez con dos ramas grandes,saludables y productivas creciendo muy juntas?Queremos mantener las dos, pero al hacerlo elfollaje sufriría de poca circulación de aire y seríamás susceptible a la mancha negra y otraspestes. Además, los nuevos brotes chocaríancon los otros afectando su crecimientocausando tallos retorcidos y curvos.¿Es posible mantener ambas ramas y suproductividad?A menudo es posible separar las ramas para quecada una tenga más espacio para crecer ydesarrollarse. Una forma de hacer esto esinsertar una “férula”, un divisor, horizontal entrelas dos para forzar la separación. Una estacafinita y pequeña descartada de una poda, sirvemuy bien para este propósito. Suavementesepare las varas y coloque la estaca entre ellas.Los acúleos de la estaca y ramas ayudarán aasegurar la separación al insertarla en el lugar.Dejar la estaca en su lugar por varias semanas,después de lo cual se puede quitar y las ramasquedarán en su nueva posición.Obviamente las ramas son más fáciles deseparar y entablillar cuando son jóvenes ytiernas. Haven´t we all had the experience ofencountering two big, healthy productive canesgrowing very close together when pruning ordeadheading our roses? We want to keep bothof them, but by doing so the foliage will havepoor air circulation and be more susceptible toblackspot and other diseases. In addition inter-facing sprouts will grow into each other stuntingtheir growth and causing twisted, bent stems. Isit possible to keep both canes and still allowthem to be productive_It is often possible to separate the canes so eachhas more room to grow and develop. One wayto do this is to insert a “splint”, a divider orseparator, horizontally between the two to forcethem apart. A thin, short piece of discarded rosecane works very well for this purpose. Gentlyspread the canes apart and put the splintbetween them. A well-placed prickle on eithercane will help secure the split when inserted intoits soft pithy center. Leave the splint in place forseveral weeks, after which time it can beremoved and the canes should remain in theirnew position.Obviously, canes are easier to spread and splintwhen they are young and tender. For older,more inflexible canes, try doing your splinting intwo to three stages. Spread them only slightlythe first time, then, after they have set in thisnew position, resplint them slightly father apart.Similar to training the canes on climbing roses,those of bush roses can be managed if you takethings slowly and in small increments.

El Jardín Municipal de Rosas de San José “SanJosé Municipal Rose Garden” es una historia detransformación. El Rosedal de Palermo esta localizado dentro deel Parque 3 de Febrero. Fue diseñado en 1914 yla restauración comenzó en 1994 con unadonación de 2000 rosas de Meilland de Francia.Las

GULAB BAGH – UDAIPUR – INDIA

Gulab Bagh: traducido como “El jardín de lasrosas” está ubicado en el Sajjan Niwas Park, deUdaipur.Udaipur: la Ciudad de los Lagos, en la India.En el estado indio de Rajastan, al noroeste de laIndia, se encuentra una de las mas hermosasciudades del subcontinente asiático.Udaipur, rodeada de lagos,donde el más grande detodos ellos, el lago Pichola,se ubica dentro de laciudad. Construido porSajjan Singh en el tardíosiglo XIX Gulab Bagh es unespectacular jardín de rosasestablecido por MaharajáSajjan Singh en el lado estedel lago Pichola.Es el mejor jardín en Asiasituado en una zonapoblada y abarca alrededorde 40 hectáreas.Este es el jardín de laPakistan National RoseSociety.Fue establecido en 1992 yesta abierto al públicodurante todo el año. Trevor Griffiths “Jardíncolor de rosa” Inauguradoen 2001, este jardín fueestablecido para preservar yhonrar a la colección derosas recogidas por TrevorGriffiths el horticulturista derenombre mundial .Diseñado por Sir MilesWarren, el jardín contienemas de 1100 variedades derosas – sobre todo de patri-monio, especies y varieda-des de David Austin.

Se siembran las variedadespara proporcionar unafloración continua lograndouna progresión gradual decolor desde un extremo deljardín al otro.El jardín tiene su mejormomento en noviembre ydiciembre cuando losramblers y noisettes estánen flor.Es propiedad de la comuni-dad por lo que es manteni-do por el Consejo deldistrito de Timaru ademasde voluntarios, un ejemploa seguir.

rose beds, is the heart of the park, where everyspring over 12,000 roses bloom in an explo-sion of color and fragrances, protected on allsides by a wrought iron fence.The Garden of the Poets, exhibits busts inmemory of important writers from differentcountries, the Patio Andaluz, built in 1929 andgiven by the city of Sevilla to Buenos Aires, theGazebo, covered with climbing roses and vinesthat culminates in the sculptural work of EmilePeynot “Floral Offering to Sarmiento”, and themagnificient wood Bridge over the lake .

There are beautiful rose gardens in the world , but some are truly exceptional from a historical,educational and/or visual point of view.Since 1995 the World Federation of Rose Societies has recognized the best of these rose gardensgranting the “Award of Excellence”.We chose four of them in four distant geographic locations and different contexts, that have beenawarded the "Award of Garden Merit Excellence".

GULAB BAGH UDAIPUR - INDIA

Gulab Bagh : translated as " The Rose Garden "is located in the Sajjan Niwas Park, Udaipur.Udaipur: City of Lakes, in India. In the Indianstate of Rajasthan, in northwestern India, it isone of the most beautiful cities in the Asiansubcontinent.Udaipur, surrounded by lakes, where the biggestof them all, Lake Pichola, is situated within thecity.Built by Sajjan Singh in the late nineteenthcentury Gulab Bagh is a spectacular rose gardenestablished by Maharaja Sajjan Singh on theeast side of Lake Pichola.It is the best garden in Asia located in apopulated area and covers about 40 hectares.This is the garden of the Pakistan National RoseSociety.It was established in 1992 and is open to thepublic throughout the year. UN MES ANTES

DESPIMPOLLADO

Estamos a fines de invierno, ya nuestras Rosas estánpodadas, alimentadas y soportando los últimos fríos.A un mes y medio de nuestra Exposición tenemos quemirarlas con atención todos los días. Ver cómo seestán desarrollando, cuidar que no las ataque algunaenfermedad. Si somos principiantes lo mejor esvisitar varias exposiciones, observar las clases, anotarlas variedades ganadoras e intentar determinar por-que fueron premiadas. Si este año no se animan aparticipar esto ayudará a hacerlo al año próximo.Si ya esta preparado para presentar una rosa esteaño, es aconsejable que empiece por elegir Rosas quesean sanas y con una forma elegante. Nuestrosconocimientos irán aumentando a medida que lasconozcamos mejor. Debemos ir alimentándolas pri-mero suavemente, por lo menos hasta que aumenteun poco la temperatura. Le podemos agregarestiércol bien descompuesto, humus de lombriz, té dealfalfa, cama de caballo y si el tamaño del rosal lopermite empezar con fertilizantes químicos; pero enpequeñas proporciones. Recordar siempre que esmejor poca cantidad, (incluso menos de lo que indicael producto) y más seguido que fertilizar con muchoproducto y más espaciado. Pulverizar con un buenfungicida preventivo y controlar los pulgones quepuedan aparecer con un insecticida.

Empezamos a preparar nuestros rosales. Las rosaspor término medio y dependiendo del clima, florecenunas 12 semanas después de la poda, pero esteperíodo puede oscilar entre 10 y 16 semanas. Existeun sistema básico que utilizan los expertos: trate decultivar tantas plantas como pueda y pódelas enfechas diferentes, El riego es importante, si hay si haysequía riegue diariamente, esto ayudará a disolver losnutrientes que la planta está ávida de absorber,

Esta tarea se realiza en las rosas que se presentan conuna sola flor por tallo. Ej. Híbridas de Té. mismo tamaño. Ahora ya podemos ir agregandobuenos fertilizantes específicos de Rosas como TOPROSE, OSMOCOTE, PHOSTROGEN, MIRACLEGRO o 15-15-15, algunos son de liberacióncontrolada y otros son sales solubles que se puedenutilizar para abono foliar.

A esta altura ya tendremos el Programa de laExposición, debemos estudiarlo detenidamentetratando de que podamos entenderlo e ir señalandolas rosas que tenemos y que tienen su clase en elprograma. Buscar sus nombres y su clasificación, esdecir, saber si son Hibridas de Té, Floribundas,Polyanthas, Trepadoras, Antiguas, Especies,Arbustivas Modernas (R. Inglesas, Rugosas, etc.) oMiniaturas. Buscar ayuda en las personas que tienenmás años exponiendo y ganando premios. Nodebemos olvidar que el riego debe ser importante, eslo que le da sustancia a las flores y al follaje. Mojarsolamente la tierra no el follaje para evitar manchasque quitarán puntos a la muestra. Pedir las tarjetas deExpositor con tiempo y así poder rellenarlascómodamente.

By the end of winter, our Roses are prunedalready, fed and struggling the end of the coldseason. One month and a half before our Showwe have to watch them daily very carefully. Checkhow they are developing, avoiding possiblediseases. If we are beginners, it is best to visitseveral shows, observe the classes, take notes onthe winning species and try to determine why theywon. If this year you are not sure, this willencourage you to participate next year.If you are prepared to exhibit a rose this year, it isbest to start choosing a healthy rose with anelegant form. Our knowledge will improve as weget to know them better. Firstly we must feedthem gradually, at least until temperature rise. Wecan add well rotten manure, vermicomposting,alfalfa tea, and horse bed. And if the size of therose bush allows, start with chemical fertilizers, butin small quantities. Always remember that it isbetter few amount (even less than therecommended dose) more often than to fertilizemore often with lots of product and less seldom.Spray with a good preventive fungicide andcontrol aphids that may appear with aninsecticide.

We start to prepare our roses. Generally speakingand depending on climate, Roses bloomapproximately 12 weeks after pruning, but thisperiod may differ between 10 and 16 weeks.There is a basic method used by experts: try toplant as many plants as you can and prune them indifferent stages. Watering is important, if there isdrought water daily, this will help to dissolve thenutrients the plant is avid to absorb.

This task is to be performed on roses that will beexhibited under one bloom per stem. For ex. inHybrid Teas. When buds become visible they must

be removed neatly leaving only one per stem, thisallows the vigorous development of the main bud.For those roses that bloom in sprays, around twoweeks prior to the Show the central bud is removedas well as two of the smallest one so the rest ofthem will open together and have the same size.Now we can add good fertilizers specific to roses asTOP ROSE, OSMOCOTE, PHOSTROGEN,MIRACLE GRO or 15-15-15, some are slowrelease and others are soluble salts that can be usedas foliar fertilizers

At this time we will already have the Show`sProgram, we must study it carefully, trying tounderstand it and keeping track of the roses wehave and have their class in the programme. Las pruebas de ADR se establecie-ron por Wilhelm Kordes hace 50años, dada la necesidad de probar yevaluar el desempeño de nuevasvariedades y fortalecer la concien-cia de variedades. Hoy, el grupo detrabajo ADR esta formado por laAsociación Alemana de Viveros,criadores de rosas y jardines deensayo independientes.Los objetivos de cría han cambiadocon los años. Se han desarrolladonuevos colores, flor y tipos decrecimiento para varios propósitos.De la misma manera cambiaron lasdirectrices para las pruebas ADR.Actualmente, las variedades nue-vas se prueban en once centros deensayo durante varios años. Seevalúan características como laresistencia al invierno, número deflores, atractivo y aroma de la flor ytipo de crecimiento. Las principalescaracterísticas de esta evaluación,sin embargo, son resistencia aplagas y enfermedades. Lasvariedades cultivadas en los sitios deensayo no reciben pesticidasquímicos. ADR tests were established byWilhelm Kordes 50 years ago,given the need to test and evaluatethe performance of new varietiesand strengthen the awareness ofvarieties. Today, the ADR workinggroup is formed by the GermanAssociation of Nurseries, rosebreeders and independent testinggardens.The breeding objectives havechanged over the years. Newcolors , flower types and growth forvarious purposes have beendeveloped. In the same way theychanged the guidelines for ADRtesting. Currently, new varietiesare tested in eleven test sites forseveral years. Characteristics suchas winter hardiness, number offlowers, attractiveness, fragranceand growth habit are evaluated.The main feature of thisevaluation, however, is resistenceto pests and diseases. The varietiesgrown in the test fields do notrecive chemical pesticides.Winners are varieties above acertain level of quality. More than2,000 varieties have beenevaluated. The current list of ADR-Roses comprisses 178 varieties.However, this certificate may bewithdrawn by the ADR jury, if avariety does not meet the standardof quality ADR anymore. ADR isan essential contribution to organicfarming and the use of roses inparks and public and privategardens, as it provides well-founded information to consumersand nurseries to assess the manyvarieties of roses.

David Austin, the English rose breeder,introduced his first creation, Constance Spry'in 1960 and since then has developed anenormous collection of modern roses with thelook and scent of old European varieties and theadded benefit of repeat bloom. David Austin'sroses are often referred to as “English Roses”.

:The term was first used by Peter Harkness whenhe visited Bermuda in the late 70's. The termrefers to a number of cultivars, which have beengrown in Bermuda for many years – some sincethe mid 1700's. Most of these roses are thoughtto be Old Garden Rose cultivars that haveotherwise dropped out of cultivation, or sportsthereof. Two main lines of roses were developed for theextreme weather conditions of Canadianwinters by Agriculture Canada. They are calledthe Explorer series and the Parkland series.These programs have now been discontinued;the remaining plant stock has been taken overby private breeders. These plants are extremelytolerant of cold weather, some down to -35C.All have repeat bloom. A wide diversity of formsand colors were achieved.

A rose that has been discovered and not yetidentified. They will take a temporary namereflecting the location from where it wasdiscovered. They are usually given study namesin double inverted commas. In Australia they aredenoted by ROR (renamed old rose) after thestudy name.

These are very full, old fashion type roses thatare being created by the French firm Guillot.Their main purpose is to bring back the beautyand strong fragrance of yesterday's roses withmodern repeat bloom.

The late 1980's witnessed the advent of genuinelow-growing ground cover Roses, specialty bredto spread without gaining height. Incidentally,these make wonderful hanging basket displays.

Introduced in 2000 by Bill Radler, Knock Outwon the prestigious All American Rose Awardthe very first year of distribution, and has sincesold by the millions and continues to do so. Theyare incredibly reliable, hardy, disease resistantand a good gateway drug to growing otherroses.

A German company (over 120 years old)specializing in rose hybridization. 'Iceberg' is afamous example of a Kordes rose. They wereone of the first nurseries to stop spaying theirtest fields and consequently have made greatstrides in the disease resistance of their roses.

:This type of rose was developed mainly for massamenity planting. So-called "landscape" roseshave thus been developed to fill the consumerdesire for a garden rose that offers color, formand fragrance, but is also low maintenance andeasy to care for. Most have the followingcharacteristics: Lower growing habit, usuallyunder 60 cm (24 inches); Repeat floweringDisease and pest resistance Growing on theirown roots; Minimal pruning requirements.

:From Kordes & Sons of Germany, MärchenRosen translates to “Fairy Tale Roses” and istheir version of the “English” rose–lush, full,scented blossoms with repeat bloom.

These roses come from the famous Frenchbreeder, Meilland, and are defined as low-maintenance, rugged, and repeat blooming. Inshort, a perfect landscape rose. Often Meidilandroses are ground hugging and make for gooderosion control.

Part of the Proven Winners from SrpingMeadow Nursery (USA) these roses aredeveloped by different breeders, but they allshare the distinction that they are own-root,easy care landscape roses.

A more recent (circa 1996) term to describe arose that is small, compact, free flowering andsuitable for a container on a patio or terrace,hence the name.

:By the early twentieth century the PolyanthaRoses were already popular; but to improve

them still further, the Danish Poulsen familycrossed some Polyanthas with Teas, thuscreating, in 1924, a new group that becameknown as the Poulsen Roses.

Poulsen of Denmark's version of the “EnglishRose.” An Old Garden rose appearance withstrongly scented blossoms and repeat blooms.

France's answer to the English roses,Romanticas are characterized as having OldGarden rose charm with repeat bloom. Theterm was coined by the French company whichintroduced them, Meilland.

From the powerhouse that is Jackson & Perkinscame Simplicity roses that are marketed as greatplant-it-and-forget-it hedge rose. Simplicityroses have been in cultivation for about 18years.

Tom Carruth was the rose breeder for WeeksRoses for many years. His range of roses isbroad, from shrubs to climbers. All respondnicely to good garden maintenance and bloomfrom spring to fall. Some of the larger shrubsmake excellent climbers in warmer climates.

HABLANDO DE PETALOS

Pétalos o Pimpollos en hielo

Vinagre de Rosas

Los pétalos de rosa llamados "hojas" en muchas recetas antiguas contienen aceitesvolátiles perfumados y colorantes naturales. El perfume de la rosa es considerado unsedante que trae armonía a la mente e incita a la meditación y al sueño. Es empleado enaromaterapia para reducir el temor aumentar la vitalidad.Cada variedad contiene su perfume propio y diferente, debido a distintas combinacio-nes de aceites aromáticos en sus pétalos lo cual permite que la mayoría de las personasencuentren alguna rosa que les guste para utilizar en la cocina.Al recolectar pétalos con fines culinarios conviene hacerlo de mañana cuando la rosarecién se esta abriendo. Así tendrán el máximo de aceite perfumado todavía intacto.Lavar los pétalos y secarlos en escurridor de ensaladas o secar con un repasador.

Llenar una cubetera a la mitad con agua o limonada y congelar. Luego colocar lospétalos (ej. "Louis Philippe") o pequeños pimpollos (ej. "Cécile Brünner" o "BloomfieldAbbundance") sobre los medios cubitos y terminar de llenar con el líquido hasta elborde, y volver a colocar la cubetera en el congelador. Estos cubitos decorados sonideales para servir con té helado, etc.

1 botella de vinagre de vino blanco2 tazas de pétalos frescos perfumados1 taza de pequeños pimpollosCalentar el vinagre y echar sobre los pétalos en un frasco grande de vidrio. Dejarreposar durante 2 semanas y luego colar y probar. Si el sabor a rosas no es suficiente,repetir el proceso con pétalos frescos. Llenar un frasco o botella decorativa con lospequeños pimpollos y verter el vinagre de rosas encima.Muy bonito de aspecto. Este vinagre se conserva por bastante tiempo. Se puede utilizaren aderezos para ensaladas, para carnes frías y ensaladas de mariscos. Los pimpollitostambién se pueden agregar a la ensalada o carne y ser comidos como alcaparras.

Petals o Rosebuds on ice

Rose Vinegar

Rose petals sometimes called “leaves” in old cooking recipes contain natural volatileperfumed oils. The rose scent is considered a sedative that brings harmony to the mindand induced meditation and sleep. It is used in aromatherapy to reduce fear and toincrease vitality.Each variety has its own distinct scent, due to different combinations of aromatic oils in itspetals that allows most people to find a specific rose to use in the kitchen.When picking petals for culinary purposes it´s best to do so early in the morning when therose is about to open. This way the scented oils will be at their maximum and still intact.Wash the petals and dry them in a salad squeegee or kitchen cloth.

Fill half an ice cube container with water or lemonade and freeze. Then place the petals(i.e. “Louis Philippe”) or small buds (i.e. “Cécile Brünner” or “Bloomfield Abundance”)over the half cubes and finish filling with the liquid to the rim and return the ice cube trayto the freezer.. These decorated cubes are ideal for serving iced tea, etc.

1 bottle of white wine vinegar2 cups of fresh perfumed rose petals1 cup of small rose budsHeat the vinegar and pour over the petals in a large glass jar, Let stand for 2 weeks andthem strain and taste. If the rose flavour is not strong enough repeat the process withfresh new petals. Fill a jar or decorative bottle with small budsand pour the rose vinegar over.Very nice looking, this vinegar lasts for a long time. It can be used in salad dressings forcold meats and seafood salads. The rosebuds can be added to salads or meats and beeaten like capers.
