As well as new developments, it should be used in any address review, address reassignment or property redevelopment

• It does not demand existing addresses be made to conform

(Although, bad addressing should always be amended)

4819 - this review is about simplifying addressing

Rural, urban ........ and other stuff!

If required, almost anything can now be given its own unique address to assist in defining its location

• Current 2003 Standard developed by ICSM Working Group 1999-2002

• Review initiated by Standards Australia in 2008

• Referred to Intergovernmental Committee for Surveying and Mapping (ICSM)

• ICSM sponsored review and appointed Street Addressing Special Interest Group (SASIG) to oversee review program in 2009

• Members of SASIG included:

– DSE

– Australia Post & New Zealand Post

– Emergency Services Telecommunications Authority

– Naming & Addressing authorities from each State and Territory & New Zealand

– Federal Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations

– Geoscience Australia

– Public Sector Mapping Agency

• SASIG have completely re-written AS/NZS 4819 with the aim of making the document more user-friendly and accessible.

• The Goal: to provide instructions for assigning addresses that can be readily and unambiguously identified and located.

• 5 key objectives guided the writing process:

• SASIG wrote the new draft Standard over a period of 18 months

• ICSM supported hiring contractor with extensive knowledge in thearea (Peter Mosley) to write a first-draft based on earlier SASIG discussions and feedback.

• Subsequent drafts revised by SASIG specialist team and later reviewed and endorsed by SASIG membership

• New Standard contained in 8 Sections with 4 Appendices

• Key benefits:

– Provides users with requirements for assigning addresses, namingroads and defining localities

– Enables creation of addresses suitable for inclusion in GeocodedNational Address File (G-NAF)

– Improved provision of services by stakeholders who utilise addresses

• September- December 2011- Standards Australia consider SASIG responses

and finalise Standard

• January 2012- AS/NZS 4819 released

• S. 9 provides for the Register of Geographic Names

• S. 10 provides for ‘naming authorities’

• S. 5 provides for naming guidelines to be established
