ARTICLE KG-1SCOPE AND JURISDICTION

KG-100 SCOPE

KG-101 Intent

The rules of this Division constitute requirementsfor the design, construction, inspection, and overpressureprotection of metallic pressure vessels with designpressures generally above 10,000 psi. However, it isnot the intent of this Division to establish maximumpressure limits for either Section VIII, Division 1 or 2,nor minimum pressure limits for this Division. Specificpressure limitations for vessels constructed to the rulesof this Division may be imposed elsewhere in thisDivision for various types of fabrication.

KG-102 Description

Pressure vessels within the scope of this Divisionare pressure containers for the retainment of fluids,gaseous or liquid, under pressure, either internal orexternal.

This pressure may be generated by:(a) an external source;(b) the application of heat from:

(1) direct source;(2) indirect source;

(c) a process reaction;(d) any combination thereof.

KG-103 Laws or Regulations

In those applications where there are laws or regula-tions issued by municipal, state, provincial, federal, orother governmental agencies covering pressure vessels,those laws or regulations should be reviewed to deter-mine size or service limitations of the coverage whichmay be different or more restrictive than the rules ofthis Division.

KG-104 Location

KG-104.1 Fixed Location. Except as provided inKG-104.2, these rules cover vessels to be installed at

a fixed (stationary) location for a specific service whereoperation and maintenance control is retained duringthe useful life of the vessel by the User who preparesthe User’s Design Specification required by KG-310.

KG-104.2 Mobile Vessels.These rules also applyto pressure vessels which are relocated from work siteto work site between pressurizations, provided priorwritten agreement with the local jurisdictional authoritycan be obtained covering operation and maintenancecontrol for a specific service. This operation and mainte-nance control shall be retained during the useful lifeof the pressure vessel by the User who prepares theUser’s Design Specification required by KG-310.

(a) Loading conditions imposed by loading, transpor-tation, or unloading of the pressure vessel at or betweenwork sites shall be considered according to ArticleKD-1.

(b) These rules shall not apply to fabrication of cargotanks mounted on transport vehicles.

KG-105 Direct Fired

Pressure vessels which are subject to direct firingand are not within the scope of Section I may beconstructed to the rules of this Division, except asexcluded by KG-120.

KG-110 GEOMETRIC SCOPE OF THISDIVISION

The scope of this Division includes only the vesseland integral communicating chambers and shall includethe following (KG-111 through KG-117).

KG-111 External Piping and Jackets

Where external piping is to be connected to thevessel (see Article KD-6):

(a) the first threaded joint for screwed connections;(b) the face of the first flange for flanged connections;

(c) the first sealing surface for proprietary connec-tions or fittings;

(d) the welding end connection for the first circumfer-ential joint for welded connections to external piping,valves, instruments, and the like;

(e) the welding pad for attachment of an externaljacket.

KG-112 Internal Pressure Piping

Internal pressure piping, when failure of such pipingwill affect the integrity of the pressure boundary.

KG-113 Nonpressure Parts

Nonpressure parts that are welded directly to theinternal or external surface of a pressure vessel. Forparts beyond this, and for stud-bolted attachments, seeArticles KD-6 and KD-7.

KG-114 Covers and Closures

Pressure retaining permanent covers or closures, in-cluding seals and bolting, or other mechanical retainers,used in service for vessel openings (see Article KD-6).

KG-115 Instrument Connections

The first sealing surface for small proprietary fittingsor instrumentation, such as gages and instruments, forwhich rules are not provided by this Division (seeArticle KD-6).

KG-116 Overpressure Protection

Pressure relief devices shall satisfy the requirementsof Part KR.

KG-117 Combination Units

When a pressure vessel unit consists of more thanone independent pressure chamber, only the parts ofchambers which are within the scope of this Divisionneed to be constructed in compliance with its provisions(see Articles KD-1 and KG-3).

KG-120 CLASSIFICATIONS OUTSIDE THESCOPE OF THIS DIVISION

The following classes of pressure containing equip-ment are not within the scope of this Division:

(a) those within the scopes of other Sections ofthis Code;

(b) fired process tubular heaters;(c) pressure containing equipment that is an integral

part or component of a rotating or reciprocating mechan-ical device, such as:

(1) pumps(2) compressors(3) turbines(4) generators(5) engines(6) hydraulic or pneumatic cylinders

where the primary design considerations and/or stressesare derived from the functional requirements of thedevice;

(d) structures whose primary function is the transportof fluids from one location to another within a systemof which they are integral parts (piping systems).

KG-121 Stamping of Vessels Outside theScope of This Division

Any pressure vessel which meets all applicable re-quirements of this Division may be stamped with theCode U3 symbol.

KG-130 FIELD ASSEMBLY OF VESSELS

Field assembly and testing of vessels constructed tothis Division shall be performed using one of thefollowing three alternatives.

(a) The Manufacturer of the vessel completes thevessel in the field.

(b) The Manufacturer of parts of a vessel to becompleted in the field by some other party stampsthese parts in accordance with Code rules and suppliesthe K-2 Manufacturer’s Partial Data Report Forms tothe other party. The other party, who shall also holda valid U3 Certificate of Authorization, makes the finalassembly, required nondestructive examination (NDE),and final pressure test; completes the K-1 Manufactur-er’s Data Report Form; and stamps the vessel.

(c) The field portion of the work is completed bya holder of a valid U3 Certificate of Authorization otherthan the Manufacturer. The stamp holder performing thework is required to supply a K-2 Manufacturer’s PartialData Report Form covering the portion of the workcompleted by his organization (including data on thepressure test if conducted by the stamp holder per-forming the fieldwork) to the Manufacturer responsiblefor the Code vessel. The Manufacturer applies his U3

stamp in the presence of a representative from hisInspection Agency and completes the K-1 Manufactur-er’s Data Report Form with his Inspector.

In all three alternatives, the party completing andsigning the K-1 Manufacturer’s Data Report Formassumes full Code responsibility for the vessel. In allthree cases, each Manufacturer’s Quality Control Systemshall describe the controls to assure compliance foreach Code stamp holder.

apply. These Sections and standards apply to the extentreferenced in this Division (see Table KG-141).

KG-142 Standard Parts

Standard pressure parts which comply with an ASMEproduct standard shall be made of materials permittedby this Division (see Part KM).

KG-150 UNITS OF MEASUREMENT

The units of measurement used in Manufacturer’sData Reports and other certified documents, and inmarking or stamping of pressure vessels, pressure vesselparts, and pressure relief devices required by this Divi-sion, shall be either:

(a) U.S. customary units (ft, lb) exclusively; or(b) both U.S. customary units (ft, lb) and SI (metric),

in which case the U.S. customary units shall be consid-ered the standard and the metric units shall be shownparenthetically. See ASTM E 380.

In addition, the User may specify a duplicate name-plate according to KS-131 and add duplicate certifieddocuments translated into the language and units ofmeasurement appropriate at the site of the installationof the vessel.
