ASMC INSIDE THIS ISSUE 1. UPCOMING EVENTS 2. LUNCH & LEARN RECAP 3. NEWS & WELCOMES 4. COMMUNITY SERVICE We made it through fiscal year end closeout! I don’t know about you but October was a blur as we look the holidays square in the eye. If you were not able to catch our luncheons, we had some fun and interesting speakers over the last three months. Check out the highlights in this newsletter and we hope to see you soon at an upcoming lunch. Our back to school drive was very successful again this year. Thanks to all of you who supported this worthwhile event. We have two community service events planned for the holiday season. We will continue to support the Salvation Army in their stocking drive. Children across Hampton Roads will benefit from your dedicated generosity. Check with your service VP on how to get a stocking or two; stockings are due back 6 December. Additionally, if you recall, a couple of years ago we “adopted” an Army family for the holidays spoiling them with our amazingly generous hearts. This year, each service will adopt a family so that we can spread our generosity further. Look for the specifics soon in your email. As always, if you have ideas for speakers or topics, please reach out to any committee member. On behalf of the entire Hampton Roads ASMC executive committee, I’d like to wish you a safe and relaxing holiday season! -- Kathy Day, President, ASMC Hampton Roads FOURTH QUARTER 2019 https://hamptonroadsasmc.com/ [email protected] “No one is useless in this world who lightens the burdens of another.” ― Charles Dickens

– Mr. Ian Sullivan, HQ TRADOC AssistantG2, briefed on the Operational Environment. The Operation Environment (OE) connects the fielded force to the future force, and transitions “how we fight” to “how we will fight”. Mr. Sullivan highlighted political, economic, informational, and psychological pressures we are currently facing and gave current and relevant examples. He also explained the necessity for Commanders to open multi-domain windows through which to deliver effects by the sophisticated balancing of careful planning to set conditions with the ability to rapidly exploit opportunities and vulnerabilities as they appear. Mr. Sullivan conveyed the importance of understanding that significant changes in the future of OE transforms the character of warfare. (If you would like to receive the slides from this presentation, please email the ASMC directly [email protected] )

– Captain Eric Klein, Acting Director ofFinancial Operations/Acting Comptroller (CG-8C) offered attendees "A Coast Guard Headquarters Perspective on Internal Control and Enterprise Risk Management Reporting"

– This month’s luncheon topic was “Speak Confidently”. If you were unable to attend, you missed a very engaging presentation. Toastmasters Thomas and Barber explained and coach the audience through common public speaking fears. The fear of being judged is the #1

biggest fear of public speaking. Shaking, sweating, and stumbling over your words are common signs of anxiety when public speaking. However, Toastmaster Barber highlighted those are also signs of excitement. A person would have the same reaction if they won the lottery. Our mind plays tricks on us so we need to train our minds to be excited about public speaking. It can boost your confidence. Additionally, being nervous when watching your troop, peer, or leadership brief and hoping they do not mess up, is called second hand anxiety. The concept of second hand anxiety is something to keep in mind, to hopefully boost your confidence when publicly speaking. You have people rooting for you, not judging you! We ended with our very own, Capt Ireland doing an impromptu speech which is a common Toastmasters exercise. He was a pro! Communication is very important in all career fields, I highly recommend attending Toastmasters to learn/perfect the tools to speak confidently.

Do you know of any outstanding Hampton Roads high school senior who plans to pursue a

financial management/resource management field of study (such fields as business administration, economics, accounting, finance)? If yes, please have the student see their school’s guidance counselor in January to obtain information on applying for an ASMC Hampton Roads Chapter scholarship! Each year our chapter offers seven scholarships, one $1,500, one $1,000, and five $500. These scholarships are offered to recognize outstanding graduating high school seniors for academic achievement and to provide financial assistance.

Timing is critical. The application cutoff date is February 28, 2020. POC: Ms. Patsy Hudson, ASMC HR Scholarships Chair ([email protected])
