Maxine Buxton

It is with pleasure and pride that I deliver my President’s Report for the ASLIA Victoria Financial Year 2012-13.

It has once again been a busy, exciting and memorable 12 months and I could not be prouder of the hard work and significant contributions from all those who support ASLIA Vic. From our committee members to project workers, from partners in the community to industry and educational sponsors and last but not least to our members far and wide who have contributed in some way large or small, I say a sincere thank you.

The number of achievements and successes enjoyed by ASLIA Vic this year is, as always many and varied. Further on in this report I have outlined some of these in relation to the strategic priorities as per the ASLIA Victoria Strategic Plan 2011-2014 to give our members a sense of the direction and underpinning philosophies of our work.

In particular I would like to thank and congratulate the ASLIA Vic Committee and Representatives who volunteer their time for the betterment of their profession and the community and who continue to amaze and inspire me! The level of professionalism, enthusiasm, passion, drive, innovation and dedication shown by this group is truly outstanding.

For me personally, I have found my first year as president to be at times challenging and hectic yet always highly rewarding and satisfying. I would like to formally acknowledge the work of Teresa Paulet and Kate Leibick as Secretary and Treasurer who are the unseen heroes of ASLIA Vic and have provided me with unlimited support and encouragement. Thank you also to ASLIA President Paul Heuston who’s guidance has been invaluable.

I would encourage all members to get involved in all that ASLIA Vic has to offer! We are always keen to hear your thoughts and feedback and welcome new ideas and fresh perspectives.

I look forward to a successful year ahead and hope to see many of you at our fantastic upcoming events.

Warm regards,Maxine Buxton.

Treasurer’s Report Kate LeibickThe last year has seen ASLIA Vic continue to be profitable and able to support it's members and the Deaf Community.  As a stand alone document the current profit and loss statement shows a dramatic loss for this financial year, however read in conjunction with the surplus income of project funds in 2012-13 for VDEI projects expended across 2 financial periods the overall picture is still one of a healthy surplus.

Financial assistance to members and the Deaf community, paid administration assistants and project workers are all worthy recipients of ASLIA Vic member's funds and whenever possible interest income is used to fund member activities, thus maintaining membership fees for the direct benefit of members.

Member Services As has been the tradition of ASLIA Vic, providing professional development opportunities for members continues to be one of our most important activities. We have enjoyed a vast and diverse range of stimulating events with many knowledgeable and respected presenters in the last 12 months. Further details under Professional Development section.

2013 has seen the return of our Mentoring Program which is most exciting! We now have 26 trained mentors listed on our website who are supported by the two wonderful coordinators of the program (Sandra Leane and Teresa Cumpston Bird) who have been tirelessly working away at matching mentees with mentors and running the program.

There has been a greater emphasis this year on our regional members in both the provision of events in those areas (in particular Bendigo and Geelong) as well as the use of technologies to allow regional members to access events remotely. We have also made a significant commitment to increasing our online content and where possible film our workshops for use after the event.

We have reintroduced a quarterly printed newsletter for members and have continued to utilise our e-news, website and Facebook page to disseminate relevant and interesting information to our member base.

We have also provided social opportunities for our members including the ASLIA Vic supported ‘Social Butterflies’ Christmas Party in 2012. This event was jointly hosted and generously sponsored by Auslan Services, Echo Interpreting and Sign Language Communications Vic. This combined end of year function was a first for Auslan interpreters and we were proud to be a part of it.

One initiative in 2013 was the ‘Red Carpet Launch’ where we announced professional development opportunities and events for the year ahead as well as formally recognised our sponsors and supporters. As part of this, we also awarded one member with a ‘Golden Ticket’ to attend a year’s worth of ASLIA Vic PD sessions at no cost. The lucky winner on the night was Lorraine Carter.

Finally, our newly renamed awards event, the AVIDs was by all accounts a great success (full AVID report herein)! ASLIA Vic would like to extend our gratitude to the Organising Committee of Teresa Paulet and Kate Leibick and once again our congratulations to all AVID recipients and nominees.

Industry DevelopmentThe state of the Interpreting industry is and will always be of great interest and importance to ASLIA Vic members and stakeholders alike and as such the committee works constantly with these groups to achieve positive outcomes for our profession and service users.

As members will be aware, the Auslan Interpreting Industry Forum Victoria (AIIFV) which began in 2011 has been under the auspices and guidance of ASLIA Vic since it’s inception. In March of this year AIIFV hosted its second forum for industry stakeholders and soon after released the “Industry Development Plan”. AIIFV was pivotal in the successful lobbying for state government funded Auslan training following the closure of Victoria’s only TAFE Diploma of Auslan course earlier in 2012. Such was the strength of the Forum’s work that its life beyond the initial funding period has been extended as Vicdeaf has agreed to take over ownership of AIIFV as of July 1, 2013. The committee would like to thank the AIIFV Steering Committee members for their tireless work and generous contributions over the last two years. In addition, we would like to acknowledge the exceptional leadership of the Chair Veronica Pardo and Vice Chair Paul Heuston and the Project Officer Amie O’Shea.

ASLIA Vic has also been represented exceptionally on various committees and groups including; the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI) Regional Advisory Council by Khang Chiem, deafConnected (formerly the Centre of Excellence for Students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing) by Serryn Bryant and ASLIA Representative Council by Cara Due. These representatives do a fabulous job of keeping ASLIA Vic informed with regards to outside developments as well as making sure that our members’ interests are represented far and wide.

Committee members also attended; the Victorian Auslan Training Consortium's (VATC) information session as a result of their successful bid to provide the new Diploma of Auslan course and, the NAATI ‘Improvements to NAATI Testing’ consultation meeting held in March of this year. As a result of the recommendations document released by NAATI, a submission was provided on behalf of ASLIA Vic members.

In relation to the Auslan Interpreters in training, ASLIA Vic has strong ties to the RMIT Diploma of Interpreting and once again visited students to give a presentation on the benefits of becoming an ASLIA Vic member and a general information session about working in the industry.

For newly accredited interpreters we have had a number of workshops to address their specific needs as well as of course our mentoring program being reestablished in 2013.

For educational Interpreters, ASLIA Vic in partnership with VDEI has once again delivered the “Mentoring Program for ES Staff who Interpret in Classrooms”. This year there is a greater emphasis on the sustainability of the program and as such two new mentors and one new language role model are being trained by existing project workers. One fantastic outcome of this project saw several ES staff without NAATI accreditation join an ASLIA Vic supported NAATI Preparation Course before undertaking the Paraprofessional examination which resulted in several newly accredited interpreters and ASLIA members! Our thanks to Julie Judd, Therese Lewis and Stef Linder for once again coordinating such an exceptional program.

We have also sponsored several members to attend conferences and undertake further studies as part of our ‘Financial Assistance’ grants that are available in February and August.

Collaborative RelationshipsHistorically, ASLIA Vic has enjoyed strong partnerships and working relationships with many government, industry and community organisations. Over the last 12 months we have seen many of these existing relationships grow and strengthen with numerous new connections made that will benefit members, the industry and community alike.

We could not continue to grow and prosper without the generous support of our sponsors and we would like to thank them once again for not only their financial contributions, but also their commitment to the sector and willingness to work in partnership with ASLIA Vic. Sponsors in 2012-13 include; Able Australia, Auslan Services, Central Auslan Booking Service (CABS), Echo Interpreting, National Accreditation Authority for interpreters and Translators (NAATI), National Auslan Booking & Payment Service (NABS), Office of the Disability Services Commissioner, Oncall Interpreters and Translators, Sign Language Communications Victoria (SLC Vic), Vicdeaf and the Victorian Deaf Education Institute (VDEI).

Vicdeaf has been a tremendous supporter of ASLIA Vic particularly in this last financial year and we are grateful for this. The generous provision of an office space for ASLIA Vic as well as use of the Albert St building at no cost has been invaluable. This has allowed us to keep costs down and spend members’ funds

elsewhere whilst keeping connected with the community. We would like to extend a personal thanks to Vicdeaf CEO Christine Mathieson for her commitment both in time and resources to ASLIA Vic and in particular her strategic advice and guidance to the committee.

As mentioned under industry development, ASLIA Vic have once again partnered with VDEI Institute to provide the “Mentoring Program for ES Staff who Interpret in Classrooms”. In addition to this program, we are working on an ‘Educational Interpreters Kit‘ with VDEI to be used for ES staff working in schools as interpreters and hope to release this in the near future. We have also enjoyed the use of the VDEI facilities including the use of video conferencing equipment at no cost. It has been our pleasure to work with the staff at VDEI again this year. We have greatly appreciated the support and leadership of Gene Reardon over the last couple of years and wish her well in her new appointment at the Regional Service Group of the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development.

ASLIA Vic has continued to work alongside community organisations who have provided support and assistance for many of our events and initiatives. Our relationship with the Australian Institute of Interpreters and Translators (AUSIT Vic/Tas) has strengthened through the provision of several joint Auslan and spoken language professional development sessions. We have also held joint meetings to support the development of AUSIT Vic/Tas committee members. Our committee has also worked with Auslan Teachers Association of Victoria (ATAV), Deaf Victoria, Deaf Children Australia and the Malthouse Theatre. We have enjoyed a delicious partnership with the team at Tradeblock Deaf Cafe at VCD who have supplied the bulk of our catering in 2013.

It is a privilege to work in an industry with so many passionate sponsors and supporters and we look forward to continuing these partnerships well into the future!

Community DevelopmentThe ASLIA Vic Committee sees it as not just important but extremely valuable to engage with and provide support to the community in any way we can.

This last 12 months has seen a significant contribution from ASLIA Vic to the community both in terms of financial support and attendance at Deaf community events.

We have provided financial support to the Australian Theatre of the Deaf’s Silent Monologues and through this offered a limited number of free tickets to members to attend the ground breaking production. Bairnsdale Deaf Education Program was also the recipient of a financial grant to allow a group of its students to attend the Deaflympics in Bulgaria earlier this year. As part of this grant the students undertook interviews with interpreters working in other countries in the hope that our members will learn from and be inspired by the work of interpreters across the globe!

ASLIA Vic committee members have also been in attendance at various community events including; Vicdeaf Christmas Rally, Deaf Victoria AGM and the Deafness Forum AGM. Committee members also coordinated an ASLIA Vic stall at the Deaf Expo held in October of last year and were pleased at the

level of engagement and interest in our activities. We have continued to support the Deaf Professional Network by attending their breakfast meetings and purchasing tickets to offer to members to attend.

Finally, we have been working closely with Deaf Victoria on a number of projects and issues related to the Deaf community. We look forward to continuing these important discussions and sharing our learnings with members and industry.

SustainabilityFor a not for profit organisation run by volunteers, sustainability is always an important issue to consider now and into the future.

As members will be aware, due to careful planning and financial management, ASLIA Vic is in a very good position relative to other state branches. This has allowed us to employ an administration officer Lisa Westwood so that committee members are more able to spend time on future planning rather than day to day administration tasks.

The executive committee has also met with Vicdeaf CEO Christine Mathieson on two occasions to discuss some long term strategic planning for ASLIA Vic. We are grateful for the insights and knowledge that she has shared with us and we look forward to putting some of our long term strategies into action.

Lastly, there has been a greater focus in 2013 on sustainability and development in the area of training and workshop facilitation. Newer presenters have been encouraged to work with ASLIA Vic and some experienced trainers to present workshops and host events.

We hope that these measures combined will lead to a stronger ASLIA Vic for many years to come!

Julie Judd, Program Co-ordinatorIn 2012 Therese Lewis (Mentor), Stephanie Linder (Language Tutor/consultant) and I worked together with 43 mentees by providing Auslan Language tuition, feedback on interpreting performance, group training sessions and modelling of interpreting practice within primary and secondary educational settings.

The success of the 2012 program culminated in some changes and enhancements to program focus in 2013. The program including a focus on interpreting performance analysis with Educational Support (ES) staff who interpret in classrooms began in term 2, and will continue for the rest of the school year. This year 24 ES staff members are part of the program. Each mentee is provided with feedback on their interpreting performance either on the job or via video footage provided to the interpreter mentors. There are 5 groups of mentees – Forest Hill College, Charles Latrobe College, Grovedale, Sunshine College and a mixed group conducted via video link comprises of mentees from Rutherglen, Mt Erin, VCD, Shepparton and Bendigo.

In 2013, each group of mentees has been introduced to the Demand Control Schema (DC-S). Facilitation of reflective practice sessions using the DC-S framework has been conducted twice each term. Stef Linder has provided one two-hour Auslan language tuition class per term to each of the 5 groups. Auslan language training included the ‘use of space’ during term 2, with role shift and depicting signs being planned for terms 3 and 4. In addition, ASLIA Vic with the generous support from Kate Leibick has provided a closed webspace for all participants to share resources and information.

To compliment the direct mentoring program with ES staff, ASLIA Vic and VDEI have provided a training program for deaf tutors and interpreter mentors wishing to work with ES staff in school settings. This training program

has welcomed Kathy Fitzmaurice, Alan Stewart and Paula Thornton (Language tutor trainees) along with Kirri Dangerfield and Daniel Hately (Interpreter mentor trainees). Trainees have attended mentor and language tuition sessions scheduled with ES staff in school settings (or via video link up) and have received training and mentorship from Stef, Therese and I. The training program will provide additional trained personnel to work directly with educational settings during 2014 and beyond.

We look forward to delivering the remainder of the program in 2013 and are planning an end of year Professional Development day for ES staff who interpret in classrooms for Saturday November 9th. The PD Day will incorporate trainees and experts in the field of Language and Interpreting who will provide a stimulating conclusion to both the mentor and trainee program for 2013.

Stephanie Linder, Language ModelIn my capacity of a language model to ES interpreters were to create two hours Auslan training for each school per term.

We also have three ‘language model mentees’ who are trained to be language models.

Up to date, I have done nine workshops in 2013. Two lessons were online which at times was challenging mainly because it is a visual language and better delivered face to face.

The subjects were introduction to use of space, role shift and depicting signs and this term we focused on the use of space because it is one of most important Auslan features and we will focus on role shift and depicting signs next term.

This model provides ES interpreters with an opportunity to learn about Auslan more specifically as it is used in their everyday interpreting. Also to develop a vocabulary to discuss the language and its challenges.

It was a night fit for James Bond himself at ASLIA Victoria’s 7th annual awards ceremony, newly renamed the AVIDs - ‘ASLIA Victoria Interpreting Distinction’ which was celebrated in style on the evening of Saturday, 22nd of June.

In attendance were many interpreters, their families and friends, Deaf community members as well as representatives from all Auslan specific interpreting agencies and sponsors. In addition to this, we were very fortunate to have Colin Allan, World Federation of the Deaf President and Paul Heuston, ASLIA President as our guests.

The night was a tribute to all things 007; martinis upon arrival, Russian spies, MI6 agents and a spectacular fight scene to recover the missing Interpreter of the Year plate! Our Master of Ceremonies was none other than James Bond (the Sean Connery era) who was aided by two interpreting agents, ‘M’ (Pip Cody) and ‘Miss Moneypenny’ (Tanya Miller).

Our guests enjoyed a delicious three course meal, drinks and performances by circus/ariel company Dislocate with their newest recruits; Bethany Robinson, Brandon Van Niekerk, Cara Due and Neil Ray.

ASLIA Victoria would like to congratulate all nominees and recipients at this year’s AVIDs;

Paraprofessional Interpreter: Cara Due,
