Helphand, FASLA, is the author of the highly acclaimed book, Defiant Gardens: Making Gardens in Wartime will be presenting wartime gardens as dramatic examples of what landscape architect Helphand calls defiant gardens gardens created in extreme social, political, economic, or cultural conditions. The talk examines gardens of war in the twentieth century a period of the deadliest wars in human history. This presentation brings to light a history that has never been studied and moving stories never before told. Kenneth I. Helphand is a professor of Landscape Architecture at the University of Oregon and a graduate of the Harvard Graduate School of Design. 10:15 – 11:30 am Enmeshed Landscape Walter Hood, FASLA, will be giving his presentation entitled: "Enmeshed Landscape". Walter Hood has served as head of the Department of Landscape Architecture at UC Berkeley; has taught at Harvard as an invited professor and lectured extensively throughout the country and the world. His Oakland based landscape architecture practice, HOOD Design, has completed many award winning projects, including the landscape and interior gardens for the new De Young Museum by Herzog and DeMueron in San Francisco. He was a fellow at the American Academy in Rome in Landscape Architecture, and has exhibited and lectured on his professional projects and theoretical works nationally and abroad.

Designing Extraordinary Mixed Bed Plantings Scott C. Scarfone, ASLA is a practicing landscape architect and certified professional horticulturist. He is the principal and founder of Oasis Design Group Baltimore, Maryland. Scarfone frequently lectures on planting design around the country including, Brookside, Longwood, and Chicago Botanic Gardens, American Planning Association, American Landscape Contractors of America, and the American Horticultural Therapy Association. Scott Scarfone has also written a book titled Professional Planting Design: An Architectural and Horticultural Approach for Creating Mixed Bed Plantings. His presentation: Designing Extraordinary Mixed Bed Plantings will address the most memorable planting beds are those that provide contrast, variety, textural differences and color throughout through year. The focus of this

presentation is to cover the aesthetic charm of well-designed mixed beds and to understand the foundations of a design that they were built upon. 2:45 – 3:45 pm Growing Greener with Roofs

How to Design and Build an Invasive Free Project Chris Dacus, ASLA from the Hawaii Department of Transportation will present how to

design and build an invasive free project, sharing techniques and lessons learned from one of the largest road projects in Hawaii, North South Road in Kapolei.
