The paint industry is raw material intensive.

Paint involves the mixing of various rawmaterials in various proportions.

The raw materials are of a wide variety. On anaverage, raw materials account for 60% of net

sales.

Asian Paints produces Titanium Dioxide in their Bhandup(Maharashtra) & Ankleshwar(Gujrat) plant.

They are generally oils, resins and plasticisers i.e. alkyds,

polyesters, emulsion polymers, epoxy resins, amino resins,

powder coating resins etc.

Around 600 raw materials are required by the Asian Paintsand all raw materials are not directly related to crude oil.

Raw materials, which constitutes around 60 per cent of total

cost.

The Asian Paints imports around 25 per cent of raw

materials.

In India, Asian Paints has a 140 strong R&D team

consisting of 7 doctorates and around 115 qualified

scientists, has always backed the company's business plan

and demands of the market place.

In the last few years, our R&D efforts have been focused on

developing new exterior finishes, economy emulsions and

distempers.

The R&D team also provides technological support and

develops customised products for the company's

international operations spanning across 19 countries.

A finished paint is inspected for its density, fineness of

grind, dispersion, and viscosity.

Colour is checked to see if it matches a standard desirecolour.

Resistance is determined by exposing a portion of a painted

surface to an arc light.

The paint's hiding power is measured by painting it over a

black surface and a white surface.

Gloss is measured by determining the amount of

reflected light.

Test to measure- Scratching or abrading a dried caot

of paint.

Adhesion is tested by making a crosshatch, calibratedto .07 inch.

Weathering is tested by exposing the paint to outdoor

conditions.

Fire retardancy is checked by burning the paint and

determining its weight loss.
