History of Ashtabula Foundation

• The Ashtabula Foundation is a

private, non-profit philanthropic

organization.

• Our Primary Mission: working for

the betterment of Ashtabula

County

Board of Trustees

• Administers funds to reflect the

intent of donors.

• Comprised of long-time Ashtabula

County residents, with a collective

wealth of knowledge and

experience, and more than 140

combined years of service on the

Board.

Foundation Grants

• Grants are provided to area

organizations to meet a wide

range of needs, from start-up

money to fully-funded projects.

• The Foundation often serves as a

pro-active partner with other

organizations, like the Civic

Development Corporation, to

initiate, develop or support

specific programs.

A History of Giving

• Founded in 1922 by prominent

Ashtabula entrepreneur and

philanthropist Rudolf. Henry Pfaff.

• First grants made in 1924 were to

the Community Fund for $300 and

to the YMCA for $100.

A History of Giving

• Since Pfaff’s original $5000

investment in 1922, the

Foundation’s assets have

blossomed to almost 20 million

dollars today.

• In the past decade, more than 50

organizations have received

nearly six million dollars, to

improve their services or facilities

in numerous ways.

Beneficiaries

• Donors establish special funds to

benefit their favorite charity.

• Those beneficiaries forever

receive distributions earned on

the donor’s original investment.

• Beneficiaries include the

Ashtabula County Medical Center,

Ashtabula YMCA and Ashtabula

County students who receive

Harvey Scholarships.

Human Services

• Since 2002, the Foundation has

granted more than $900,000 to

local agencies and non-profit

organizations.

• Beneficiaries include United Way,

Catholic Charities and its HALO

project, Speech, hearing and

Rehabilitation Center, Country

Neighbor program, American Red

Cross and the Salvation Army.

Human Services

• Since 1935, the Foundation has

contributed close to half a million

dollars toward major renovations

at the Ashtabula County Medical

Center, in addition to the annual

distributions given to ACMC and

its predecessor, Ashtabula

General Hospital.

Community Development and Other Projects

• The Civic Development

Corporation has received

Foundation grants for each of its

5-year campaigns since 1970.

• Currently, the Foundation makes

annual contributions in the

amount of $110,000 to the CDC’s

General Campaign and to support

the Partnership for Education in

Ashtabula County initiatives.

Community Development and Other Projects

• Other community organizations

and projects receiving grants

include the “Lights on the Lake”

holiday lighting project at

Lakeshore Park and the Ashtabula

County Animal Protective League.

Education

• The Foundation supports groups

such as ACCESS, After School

Discovery, and PEAC, since the

inception of each program.

• Ashtabula County’s public and

private schools systems receive

grants for renovation and new

construction, playground

equipment and many educational

and extracurricular activities.

Education

• The Ashtabula Foundation Board

recently approved a five-year,

$750,000 grant to Kent State

University-Ashtabula Campus for

its new state-of-the-art Health and

Science Building.

Education

• The Foundation’s Edward J. Harvey

Scholarship Fund, established in

1967, is a four-year scholarship

awarded to at least five Ashtabula

County high school graduates

each year.

• The Foundation is committed to

more than $96,000 in scholarship

payments through 2010.

Recreation/Conservation

• In 2001, the Board approved a

three-year grant to the Ashtabula

County Metroparks, for the

purpose of hiring an administrator

and work toward establishing a

county-wide park system.

• Through the amount of State

grants awarded to the Metroparks,

this original grant leveraged over 1

million dollars to Ashtabula County.

Recreation/Conservation

• Trustees have supported the

Cleveland Museum of Natural History

in purchasing properties in Ashtabula

County for recreational and

educational use as green space.

• The Foundation supports sports,

outdoor and recreational opportunities

for youth including Ashtabula YMCA,

Western Reserve Boy Scouts and

several area Little League

organizations.

Arts/Culture/Historical

• The Foundation supports arts and

culture in the county through funding

local organizations, including the

Ashtabula Arts Center, the Ashtabula

Choral Society and Jefferson Depot

Village Living Museum.

• In 2003, the Board supported efforts

of a committee, responsible for

bringing the historical Freedom

Schooner Amistad to the Ashtabula

Harbor.

Arts/Culture/Historical

• Many Ashtabula County Historical

Societies have been beneficiaries

of Foundation grants for both

capital and program funding.

Religion

• Over the past 10 years, an average of

$100,000 has been granted annually

for churches in Ashtabula County and

the Ashtabula Area Ministerial

Society.

• Grants are used for capital

improvements and religious outreach

programs, including homeless

shelters, food pantries, drug and

rehabilitation programs and youth

programs.
