1 An Ivy League quality of education, right here in India Introduction

description

Ashoka University is a philanthropic initiative founded by eminent scholars and visionaries of our time. We offer a liberal education at par with the best in the world. Taking our inspiration as much from Emperor Ashoka's commitment to knowledge and peace to the Ivy League's emphasis on rigour and breadth, we offer multidisciplinary courses of thought and socially-conscious modes of study. Ashoka is a place where the most inspiring teachers and brightest learners come together in a uniquely holistic model of higher education. We will nurture, not only the best students in the world, but the best students for the world.

The Need For Ashoka

6

Page 7: Ashoka University Introduction

7

Indian higher education is ailing

• Falling standards of Governance & Management in public and private

institutions

– Have poor standards of academic & administrative management and lack

accountability

– Run as low-risk enterprises managed by the promoters

– Rampant misuse of power to grant degrees and diplomas

– Accrediting agencies have challenges related to resources and administration

• Lopsided focus on ‘professional’ courses

– Focus on generating profits by catering to the market demand for professional

courses

– Curriculum focuses on ‘training for a job’ and ignores ‘education for life’

• Demotivating environment for faculty

– Have limited autonomy in teaching and insufficient resources for research

– Promotions of faculty based on tenure and not on performance

– Indian PhD students are not inclined to come back and teach in India

7

The Need For Ashoka

Page 8: Ashoka University Introduction

8

Indian students today

• Have limited opportunity to explore their area of interest and passion

• Are forced to choose their college education based on their board exam results

• Join the herd in pursuit of popular brands, hoping for ‘good’ careers

• Get sub-standard learning experience even at the ‘best’ colleges

• Are not considered professionally/academically at par with students abroad

• Unable to focus on discovering oneself or pursuing their dreams

As a result, students spend huge sums on going abroad for the desired college education

8

The Need For Ashoka

These are observations made by Ashoka Task Force referring to research reports and conversations with media, academicians, industry, graduates and students

Page 9: Ashoka University Introduction

- PRANAB MUKHERJEE, PRESIDENT OF INDIA

“Ladies and Gentlemen, we lack universities that can provide

quality education that meet global benchmarks. It is a matter of

concern that there is not a single Indian university in the top 200

universities in the world as per an international survey of

universities. This position is not at all acceptable. This calls for

serious introspection. With educational standards that fall short of

international benchmarks, India would be grievously handicapped

in this competitive world,”
