The Grade II listed building – known locally as the Laurel Building after the former school’s most famous pupil, Stan Laurel – is in extremely poor condition since being seriously damaged by fire in 2007. Plans are now being put in place for Durham County Council and the South Durham Enterprise Agency (SDEA) to join forces to seek lottery funding to restore the building and create new office space close to the town centre. The Heritage Lottery Fund has recently introduced a Heritage Enterprise Grant for projects that save ‘at risk’ historic buildings and use them to improve economic growth, which the partner- ship hopes to successfully appeal to for funding. A spokesperson for the Heritage Lottery Fund commented, “Heritage Enterprise can help com- munities repair derelict historic places, giving them productive new uses. By funding the repair costs and making these buildings com- mercially viable, we hope to breathe new life into vacant sites.” The SDEA is a non-profit agency whose focus is to create and sustain jobs in the local community. The SDEA will act as the lead applicant for the lottery funding and, if the bid is suc- cessful, manage the building and its operations once restored. Cllr Neil Foster, Cabinet member for economic re- generation said, “Although there is a long way to go, we hope that this is the start of a project to save an iconic building as well as provid- ing another welcome boost to the economy of Bishop Auckland.” Asda Bishop Auckland has helped to provide a grant of over £13,000 for the town’s Auckland Youth and Community Centre. The Centre provides young people living on Woodhouse Close Estate with a range of activities and learning experiences, as well as low cost child care, a youth club, skills workshops and CV writing classes. Ashley Casey, commu- nity life champion at Asda Bishop Auckland, applied for the funding through the Asda Foundation – the supermarket’s charitable organisation, which aims to support projects and good causes throughout the UK. The store supports the centre with various fundraising activities and healthy eating classes in- store. The money will help repair the roof and security system at the community centre, as well as fund new skills equipment. Ashley commented, “The grant acknowledges the amazing work that the centre does within our local community by provid- ing invaluable learning ex- periences for young people to grow and develop.” John Wiseman, business manager at Auckland Youth and Community Centre added, “This is such a fantastic amount of money for us and we are hugely grateful to Asda Bishop Auckland and the Asda Foundation for making this possible. “The money will help make a huge difference to the centre and the kids we work with.” Set up in 1988, the Asda Foundation aims to have a positive impact on local communities, by providing support to a range of local good causes, chosen by Asda community life col- leagues across the UK. Simon Quinn, aged 28 of Derwent Avenue, West Auckland, pleaded guilty to a charge of refusing to provide a specimen for analysis, when he appeared at Newton Aycliffe Magis-trates’ Court recently. The court heard how, on Sunday 18th January, a concerned member of the public contacted the police after Quinn was seen staggering drunk-enly before getting into his vehicle in the Market Place

in Bishop Auckland. Police followed the vehicle and pulled it over on Etherley Lane where Quinn refused to take a roadside test. Officers then took the defendant to the police station where he continued to refuse to cooperate.Quinn, who was not repre-sented in court, was dis-qualified from driving for twenty months and fined a total of £270, including court costs and victim support surcharge.

Auckland Castle is ap-pealing for memories of ‘The People’s Bishop’, Ian Ramsey, on the centenary of his birth.Ramsey was appointed Bishop of Durham in 1966, but died just six years later in 1972 from a heart attack. His ashes are buried in the medieval St Peter’s Chapel at Auckland Castle, along with those of his wife, Margretta (Margaret), who died in 1997.Ramsey was one of Durham’s most progressive and best loved bishops, whose often radical ideas influenced a generation of the nation’s thinkers.January 31st would have been his 100th birthday. Now the curatorial team at Auckland Castle are marking the anniver-sary by appealing for memories, stories, films and photographs to help build up a more compre-hensive picture of the life and personality of the man dubbed by one of his biographers, John Peart-Binns, as the ‘Improbable Bishop.’ Clare Baron, Assistant Curator at Auckland Castle said, “There will be many hundreds of people around still who both knew and met him. We know Ramsey’s official story, but we want to find out more about those un-guarded moments when he took a step back from the religious politics and went out into the com-munity visiting schools, pit villages, social clubs, factories and fetes.“Ian Ramsey was a man with boundless energy and a fertile mind who found it extremely difficult to turn down a request for help, which many claim con-tributed to his early death

from a heart attack at the age of only 57.“As such, he would have touched many people’s lives. We would love to hear from them with their memories of Ian Ramsey, no matter how big or small, be they a miner, housewife, student, shop worker or parishioner.”Ramsey was a working class Lancashire lad who rose to become Bishop of Durham. But he never forgot his roots. On his appointment as bishop it is said he went to Buckingham Palace to pay homage to the Queen wearing a cloth cap!Professor Basil Mitchell, who gave the address at Ramsey’s memorial service on November 22nd, 1972, said, “No one ever looked or sounded less like a bishop or even a profes-sor,” a comment no doubt borne from the fact he never lost his Lancashire

accent.Enthusiastic, friendly and down-to-earth, he understood the people in his diocese. But at the same time his outspoken opinions on moral ques-tions such as abortion and suicide often brought him into conflict with both the church he represented and the establishment.Today Auckland Castle still bears many reminders of Ramsey’s short tenure as Bishop of Durham, includ-ing an unfinished portrait of him which hangs among his predecessors and suc-cessors in the Throne Room.Anyone with memories, stories, films or photo-graphs of Ian Ramsey from his time as Bishop of Durham is asked to contact Georgina Ascroft on 01388 743 750 or email [email protected],

Michelle Sullivan entered the courtroom at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court, on crutches, wearing a neck brace and with an eye patch over her left eye. The 34 year-old, of Salisbury Place, Bishop Auckland, entered no pleas to charges that, on 17th October in Newton Lane, Darlington, she was in possession of an offen-sive weapon and that she assaulted a police officer in the execution of his duty. The court heard how an officer on patrol had seen Sullivan in a dishevelled state and had stopped and asked her to stop in order to assist her. Sullivan responded by brandishing a syringe, which was filled with a

dark red substance, and threatening to spray the officer. She then did so, with the substance landing on the officer’s arms, face, eyes and uniform. The officer had to use a pepper spray in order to pacify his assailant, who had escaped from West Park Hospital, where she had been detained under the Mental Health Act.The police officer had to attend hospital for tests and injections and his statement was described by the Crown prosecu-tor as: “One of the most distressing personal state-ments I have ever read.” Magistrates declined ju-risdiction and matters will now go to Teesside Crown Court on 18th February.

After a recent change in uniform, teachers leading a Bishop Auckland Youth Theatre session at Bishop Barrington School were surprised to discover hundreds of old style school sweaters in the rafters above the stage. After speaking to site su-pervisor, Stuart Fieldson, it was decided that The Salvation Army would be approached, with a view to donating the old school jumpers to them. Stuart, who has worked at the school for several years, was delighted that the newly found uniform would be put to good use.Tony Hosking, Head of Clothing Collection at The Salvation Army Trading Company said, “We are very grateful to the staff and students at Bishop Barrington School for donating their jumpers. “The profit we make from these generous donations goes to help the work of The Salvation Army in communities across the UK. “The money raised from unwanted clothes, like these jumpers, will help towards many of the char-ity's projects, such as giving support to homeless people or providing care for victims of human traf-ficking.

30 Years Experience

In January, officers from the Ferryhill Neighbour-hood Team assisted officers from the RSPCA in execut-ing a warrant at an address in Byers Green. They subsequently helped with the search of a second address in Bishop Auckland with regards to reports of wild birds having been trapped and sold.As a result of the op-eration 21 birds, recently taken from the wild, were removed from the address

in Bishop Auckland.A local man who was har-bouring the birds at the address was subsequently interviewed and reported for offences contrary to the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981. Under the Act all wild birds, their nests and eggs are protected. The maximum penalty that can be imposed for an offence under the Act in respect of a single bird is a fine of up to £5,000 and/or six months' imprisonment.

Bishop Auckland Commu-nity Partnership, a charity operating from the Four Clocks Centre, is looking to recruit more trustees to help run the community resource.A spokesperson said, “This is a valuable community resource in the centre of

Bishop Auckland. We are looking for volunteers who can spare at least half a day per month. “Anyone interested can call in to the Four Clocks Centre to see what’s involved or can email the Partnership at fourclockscentre@ btconnect.com.

Trustees sought Pepper-spray needed to separate barricaded lovers

A 23 year-old woman and 30 year-old man, who al-legedly refused to stop having sex in the toilets of Bishop Auckland’s Stanley Jefferson pub, had to be pepper-sprayed by police before being dragged into a police van in a state of undress. The insistent lovers, both from Bishop Auckland, were arrested after officers had to be called to the

town centre pub at about 8.30pm on Wednesday 28th January. The pair had barricaded themselves in the ladies toilets and refused to come out.Witnesses said four police cars and two riot vans were called to the scene and officers were forced to use the pepper spray after the man and woman became aggressive.

A spokeswoman for Durham Police said, “A 30 year-old man and a 23 year-old woman, both of Bishop Auckland, were arrested at the Stanley Jefferson public house in the Market Place, Bishop Auckland, on Wednesday night in con-nection with a public order offence.“The couple have been bailed pending further inquires.”

It took officers from four police cars and two police vans to remove the pair from the pub toilets.

Crimestoppers charity joins the fight against fly-tippingCrime-fighting charity Crimestoppers is pledging its support to a campaign across Durham that could see the public rewarded for reporting fly-tipping across the county, and is asking the public to fill in the missing pieces of infor-mation.For the first time in its 26 year history, the inde-pendent charity is part-nering the campaign, in conjunction with Durham County Council, to target fly-tippers across County Durham. Crimestoppers offer people the opportunity to report crime completely anony-mously - and they could even get a cash reward. The charity has increased its support of the campaign, as it is now evident that nationally this particular crime has increased over the last year. Dave Hunter for Crimestoppers said: “This is a worrying crime, as the individual’s show no respect for other people, the environment, or indeed

the safety of children, as many of these unlicensed dumps have potentially hazardous materials con-tained within them. “Most concerning is the fact that a number of these fly-tippers have links to other criminality. We would encourage members of the community to give us this information in complete anonymity. In 26 years we have handled over 1.5 million calls about crime and not once has the caller been identified - such is our guarantee to the public.”Fly-tipping is a criminal offence punishable by 12 months in prison if convict-ed at a Magistrates Court, or up to five years if con-victed in a Crown Court.Oliver Sherratt, Head of Direct Services at Durham County Council said: “We very much welcome Crimestoppers joining our anti-flytipping campaign. With the whole commu-nity on board, and working together, we can dramati-

cally reduce this hazardous and unsightly environ-mental crime across our county.” Also, the Durham Police and Crime Commissioner Ron Hogg has thrown the support of his office behind this ground-breaking campaign. He said “Fly-tip-ping is illegal and anti-so-cial, and there is no excuse for people to simply dump their unwanted rubbish or household furniture on the streets. This issue has an impact on communi-ties, partner agencies and the environment as well. I am pleased to give this campaign my full support.” Members of the public are eligible to claim a reward of up to £1000 if their information given to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 leads to a suc-cessful arrest and charge. They can also complete an anonymous online form on the Crimestoppers website www.crimestoppers-uk.org, but rewards cannot be claimed this way.

Appearing before magis-trates at Newton Aycliffe recently, Joseph Sample was found to be in breach of a conditional discharge and of a suspended sentence. The 35 year-old, of Tivoli Place, Bishop Auckland, pleaded guilty to being drunk and disorderly in Sycamore Grove, West Auckland, on 20th January. The court heard that police were first called at around 11.45pm and found the de-fendant drunk and cursing and swearing but officers

had to return three times as Sample had continued to be abusive. Sample, who has learning difficulties and has over 100 offences on record, claimed that as he was unable to read, that he may have taken the wrong dosage of his medication. Magistrates decided not to activate the suspended sentence and fined the defendant a total of £215, which will be consolidated with what he already owes the court.

The Bishop Auckland Fun-draising Group for Marie Curie Cancer Care cel-ebrated its 1st birthday recently. To date the group has raised in excess of £16,000 - thanks to the generos-ity of the people of South West Durham. All monies raised go towards providing end of life care in the Bishop Auckland area.In addition to supermar-

ket collections to support Daffodil Month in March, the group has a full pro-gramme of interesting events lined up in the coming year including curry nights at the Spice Lounge, Blooming Great Tea Parties, strawberry and champagne garden open days, vintage fashion events and - looking ahead to Christmas - a sing-along-a-carol concert.A spokesperson for the

group said, “We aim to have a good time whilst raising money for this excellent cause and would be delighted to welcome new members to our monthly meetings at 1.30pm on the first Tuesday of the month, in the Community Fire Station on Watling Road, Bishop Auckland. For further details contact Elizabeth Varley on 01388 606075.

Bishop Auckland Station Trust, a community group with an interest in Bishop Auckland Railway’s heritage, is launching a funding appeal to help tell the story of the station’s history.“We are intending on erecting interpretation boards on the site of the old historic station,” says Trust chairman, Michael O’Neill. “The boards will help explain the importance of the town’s railway heritage accompanied with photo-graphs of the station in its heyday. The group, which currently has five members, but which is encouraging more people to get involved, has already started work on the content of the boards. “We would also like to place a plaque on the re-maining part of the original station,” added Mr O’Neill.

“It is only a few feet but it is the original 1842 platform built by the Stockton and Darlington Railway.”“We are looking for support and funding to help us achieve our aims. We feel it’s an important part of our town’s history which has been forgotten.”Some funding has been obtained but an application is expected to be submit-ted to the Town Council. The Trust is in talks with Durham County Council about the necessary planning permission with the group confident the project will get an autumn go-ahead.The group is also lobbying for an improved train service to the town.Mr O’Neill said, “With all that is going on at Auckland Castle and that end of the town, we think there is demand for a later train. “The campaign for this will probably take a couple of years but we do feel it would be worth it.”Anyone wishing to become involved with the Trust should visit its Facebook page at facebook.com/bast2009.

A young history en-thusiast has set up a Facebook page for residents and non-residents alike to get involved in discover-ing the town’s past.Alex Tighe, of Bishop Auckland, has been re-searching the history of the town to see how it has changed over the years. The 17 year-old said, “Bishop Auckland has seen some huge changes over the years and I don’t think a lot of people understand or realise the change which has happened. “For example, the only part of the railway station remaining is the brick wall which runs from B&Q to Cables Taxis. “History happens every day and I find it amazing to look back and see how places develop over time.” Alex has become very interested in the place

where he was born and has set up a Facebook Page for other people to share in his interest. Within a week his page has received over 3,600 likes - and photos, ques-tions and information have been flooding in. To get involved in Bishop Auckland's history, take a look at Alex’s page by heading to Facebook and searching - The History of Bishop Auckland.

Bishop Auckland Table Tennis Club members made a great start to the New Year when a squad of six players took the trip to Blackpool hoping to continue the form they showed just before Christmas. The under 15s saw 12 year-old Luca Pontone reach the quarter finals in the plate event, with Conor Elston reaching the last 16. Peter Smallcombe reached the last 16 of the main event before just going down in the 5th to highly ranked Harry Watson. The under 13s saw both Luca Pontone and Peter Smallcombe reach the later stages of the main event; Luca reaching the quarter finals and Peter going one further reaching the semis, before losing to Scottish international Danny Bajwa in four games. The older squad of Zak Hutchinson, Tom Whittaker and Carl Draper were the last players up. Carl, after a slow start and a five set

loss, put that behind him to score a fantastic win over the number one seed for the event. A stuttering Tom Whittaker made it through his group as runner up, just losing to the 5th seed in his group. Zak, with the toughest group, had two narrow losses and a win to put him into the plate event. Both Carl and Tom

reached the last 16 before going down. Zak, unhappy with himself at not being in the main event, found another gear and flew through to the final of the plate event, only dropping two sets en-route before winning the final three games to one, with a super display of attacking table tennis.
