ZSCA ARTIST: ASHLEIGH SUMNER Horns & Halos refers to the dichotomy of symbols used in Sumner’s work, the twin and opposing aspects of life, the good and the bad, perceived angels and demons. Her work also depicts personalities from history and pop culture who reflect this tension – those who were both idolized and condemned by society and the public at large. Sumner shines a spotlight on the good and bad perceptions of the most revered of political or media celebrities. Her natural love of text is often implemented throughout her work by incorporating pages from books of poetry, verses, and lyrics to often make a social, spiritual, or political statement. Ashleigh Sumner is a self-taught artist living and working out of the Arts District in Downtown, Los Angeles. Born in 1979, Sumner received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Western Carolina University. Sumner’s work is inspired by industrial areas, inner city communities, and the modern day street art movement. Sumner’s mixed media process involves found street flyers and captured images on her cell phone from urban areas across the globe. These images are printed and applied repeatedly to wooden surfaces then stacked and torn to create multiple layers of distressed paper imagery.
