NEED FOR ENVIROMENTAL MANAGEMENT• The exploitation of mineral resources is one of the

serious challenges to the degradation of environment and ecology.

• The economic growth and development of the country depends not only on the “Resources Management” but also on the “Environment Management”.

• All of the Environmental standards stress the need for continuous, never ending, improvement in striving to protect the environment, not only for ourselves but for future generations to come.

• The environmental impact of mining includes erosion, formation of sinkholes, loss of biodiversity, and contamination of soil, groundwater and surface water by chemicals from mining processes.

ENVIROMENTAL MANAGEMENT PLANThe actions an organization is taking to

determine how it affects the environment, complies with regulations, keeps track of environmental management activities, and meets environmental goals and targets.

It also documents key elements of environmental management including the environmental policy, responsibilities, environmental manual, applicable standard operating procedures and BMPs , record keeping, document control, reports, communication, training, monitoring, and corrective action.

EMPOne of the greatest benefits of an EMP is that

everything pertaining to environmental management is written down and can be found in one place. This helps ensure that tasks are done consistently throughout the business.

The main aim of EMP is to implement a consistent, comprehensive and efficient approach for managing site’s environmental condition.

In many cases, it simply formalizes practices already undertaken on site. Once a company has an EMP, it has an advantage as far as knowing the legal requirements and managing pollution risks according to best practice.

EMPs can also help companies increase efficiencies and reduce costs.

ObjectivesEnsuring compliance with regulatory

authority stipulations and guidelinesVerifying environmental performance

through information on impacts as they occurResponding to changes in project

implementation not considered in the EIAAppropriate environmental management

measures and requirements are implemented from the commencement of the project

Precautions against damage and claims arising from damage are taken timely

Providing feedback for continual improvement in environmental performance.

Types of EMPThere are three broad categories of EMPs in

the project lifecycle:The Construction Phase Environmental

Management PlanThe Operational Phase Environmental

Management PlanThe Decommissioning Phase Environmental

Benefits Summarize environmental impacts identified in

the EA report Identify impacts that must be mitigatedDescribe mitigation measuresDescribe monitoring and reporting arrangementsDescribe assignment of responsibilities and

schedules Provide costs estimates for mitigation and

monitoring measuresReduce operating costsIncrease employee involvement

Targets and StandardsDetermine the area of application of your

environmental management plan, taking into account your resources (staff, time, finances) and the site where your event will take place (community, stakeholders, etc).

Draw up a list of targeted and effective actions taking into consideration the environmental risks of your event.

Environmental issues and preventive measuresAIR QUALITY The main issue with mining is dust particlesLarge concentration of dust can be health

hazardous. The dust generated due to blasting operations can

cause serious environmental problems. The people invariably feel a loss of environmental

amenity due to dust deposits or dust concentrations before their health is affected.

The control measures include minimizing the area of pre stripping , properly constructed haul roads ,rehabilitating mined areas as soon as possible.

NOISE AND VIBRATIONSNoise can be an issue because mines normally

operate 24 hrs a day and sound levels can fluctuate widely.

The ground vibrations produced due to the blasting operation could cause damage to property if not properly monitored.

Proper scheduling of work activity and accurate blast design could help to reduce these problems

WATER MANAGEMENT Mine planners must consider how their facilities

will cope with floods. Mines can de water ground water aquifers some

distance from shafts or open pits

Page 12: Ashish Kumar Brijwani (08mn24). NEED FOR ENVIROMENTAL MANAGEMENT The exploitation of mineral resources is one of the serious challenges to the degradation.

WATER QUALITY Mines can affect runoff and ground water quality

through contamination with dissolved and suspended material.

The storm water can be contaminated from process plants , workshops and vehicle wash down pads

Acidic water are a further mine planning issue.Mine owners must also design guard against the

release of chemically or radiologically contaminated water.

Essential part of mine planning is the development of a water management strategy.

Best practice of water management separates the different class of water and priorities consumption so that the poorest quality water is used first.

Uncontaminated water should be diverted around distributed areas , while all run off from bare areas should be collected and drained to control system such as sedimentation dams

SOIL CONSERVATION Top soil management should be planned to

conserve available soils for use in rehabilitation.

Top soil can promote growth by preserving plant propagules that naturally regenerate.

FLORA AND FAUNA An accepted part of pre mining investigation

is a survey of existing flora and fauna.Climate , soils and the rehabilitation strategy

are important considerations in minimizing impacts on flora and fauna.

SUBSIDENCE Excavation of underground coal or minerals can

disturb the surface of land.Mine planners can sometimes modify extraction

methods and sequence to keep damage within acceptable limits. This includes varying extraction panel widths and altering transmissions lines and building before subsidence.

HAZARD AND RISK ASSESSMENT Deposit geology impose certain risks of high and low

wall failure, roof and floor instabilityMines can be inundated by flooding and disturbed

by other natural disasters such as earthquakes. All the risk associated must be properly analyzed

and evaluated and steps to avoid any accidents must be taken.

Page 15: Ashish Kumar Brijwani (08mn24). NEED FOR ENVIROMENTAL MANAGEMENT The exploitation of mineral resources is one of the serious challenges to the degradation.

Monitoring and ReportingMonitoring programmes should be prepared to

determine the effectiveness of the management actions and to understand the actual residual impact of the construction and/or operations on the environment.

Reporting procedures for conveying information from the monitoring activities must be developed in order to ensure that management is able to take rapid corrective action should certain thresholds be exceeded.

The monitoring programme could comprise three main aspects:

Baseline measuring Impact (or performance) monitoringCompliance monitoring

Page 16: Ashish Kumar Brijwani (08mn24). NEED FOR ENVIROMENTAL MANAGEMENT The exploitation of mineral resources is one of the serious challenges to the degradation.

AUDITING :An audit analyses the results obtained from

monitoring, assesses whether objectives and targets have been met and whether there are variances from the stipulated EMP and legal requirements. In addition, the audit assesses whether EMP implementation has been undertaken according

MANAGEMENT REVIEW :EMPs should be dynamic, flexible and subject

to periodic review .Management reviews should be scheduled at

key stages in the life-cycle of the project and the EMP revised accordingly.
