“The wonderful seclusion of this property was one of its principal attractions,” recalls Fay. “We’d been living in Tenterden but wanted to be in the country, while still having easy access to Ashford International, Gatwick and London. We came from the country lane, through the wrought iron gates and up the long, private driveway and then, finally, this fabulous house peeped out from among the trees. I loved its park like setting with its beautiful mature trees. The house sits in the middle of its plot, so it’s surrounded by grounds making it completely private.”

“As the house is not listed we were able to renovate the house with relative ease,” explains Peter. “We undertook an extensive renovation programme which reflected the age and history of the property.”

“Or intention was to make the rooms bigger and brighter around the existing features,” continues Fay. “We created flexible reception rooms, which include a large study, and we made a huge family kitchen, where we spend a lot of time; the kitchen and the sitting room with its French doors out onto the extensive southwest facing patio, that’s the party space! Upstairs, we sacrificed a smaller bedroom to create a master bedroom suite with a dressing room and a bathroom; it could be used as a nanny suite as there’s an alternative en suite bedroom. All three bathrooms have under-floor heating.”

“The formal garden is mainly lawn with mature trees, specimen shrubs and various beds of flower and roses, while two large carp ponds connected by a bridge make a nice sundown spot,” adds Peter. “We’re going to miss the beauty of the garden and its views. We’ve never used the stable block, which was here when we came in 2006, but the surrounding paddocks add wonderfully to the sense of space and privacy. However, the location has definitely met our expectations for convenience. Tenterden with its Waitrose and Tesco is just three miles, while shops in Biddenden are very handy. Ashford is just 20 minutes, Headcorn 15 minutes, the Eurotunnel only 30 minutes. Canterbury is an hour and Gatwick an hour and a half.”

“Work has now taken us to Switzerland, so reluctantly we have to say goodbye to Marlands, which we’ll miss enormously,” conclude Fay and Peter.*
