n Saturday, I had the great privilege to be involved with the First Annual Bikers for Boobs Motorcycle Ride sponsored by Cox’s Harley Davidson and 93.1 the Wolf (a Greensboro, NC country radio station). Never having participated in an event such as this, I had no idea what to expect. The attendance, although I don’t have exact numbers, was certainly in the thousands and if I had to guess, I’d say there were 650 - 700 motorcycles there, too. Bikers for Boobs supports the Randolph Cancer Center Mammography/Patient Assistance funds for Randolph County. This fund allows women who are under insured or have no insurance access to early detection and medical care. Prior to this there was no fund available for these services in Randolph County. And, as far as cancer goes, everyone knows that early detection is key.

Dear Readers,

On Saturday, I had the great privilege to be involved with the First Annual Bikers for Boobs Motorcycle Ride sponsored

by Cox’s Harley Davidson and 93.1 the Wolf (a Greensboro, NC country radio station).

Bikers for Boobs was founded by Fay Morgan and Joy Hicks, two breast cancer survivors who wanted to make sure every woman had the opportunity to get a mammogram. So they came up with Bikers for Boobs. Since Joy works at Cox’s Harley Davidson, an organized motorcycle ride was the logical venue to accomplish their goals.

My step-mother is a breast-cancer survivor so causes such as these are especially near and dear to my heart. Breast Cancer is the most common cancer and the second leading cause of death among women (lung cancer is

first). Chances are you know someone that has been diagnosed or will be diagnosed with breast cancer; it is not a matter of if, it is a matter of when. The good news is early detection and treatments have improved, bringing the mortality rate down to 3 in 100. I’d like to be alive when the disease is eradicated altogether.

Bikers for Boobs, held on Saturday, September 25, 2010, was nothing short of amazing. There were so many people there it was awe inspiring. Everywhere you looked there was pink. A couple of guys even dyed their beards pink in support of their loved ones. The mood of the event was very upbeat and positive. There were vendor booths, a bouncy castle for the kids, Krispy Kreme doughnuts, a drawing for a special edition Breast Cancer awareness Harley Davidson and the famous pink fire truck that travels around the Country visiting dozens of Cities spreading the “Cares Enough to Wear Pink” Campaign. For a first-time event, the attendance and participation from the community was impressive to say the least. Undoubtedly, this will rival any event on the East Coast in years to come.

As I write this, I don’t have many of the final details – $12,000 is a low estimate, and over 3,000 people attended throughout the day’s events. For me, though, it was about seeing all the wonderful people coming together for such an awesome cause. I had a great time meeting many of the riders and their families and catching up with friends that were participating in the event. Unfortunately, when the riders rolled out, I had to leave because of another event on my calendar. Next year though, I am going to block out the day and make sure I am there for the after-ride festivities. Maybe I’ll even find someone who will let me borrow their motorcycle or ride along.

Special thanks to Fay and Joy for inviting us to participate. We hope this special event magazine and the pictures we took does their cause and event justice. Please purchase a printed copy of this magazine by clicking here or on any of the other banners throughout the publication. All the profits from the sale of the printed edition will go to the Bikers for Boobs fund.
